More Sandman Generally Means Happiness 4 out of 5 stars.

This collection of short stories, each one featuring one of the Endless, was worth the attempt. I consider myself a fan of the Sandman (I believe the regular run to be one of the greatest comics, ever, and near the top of all literature). I like anything that will allow for more authentic adventure in this world that Neil Gaiman has created.

I am happy to have it.

That said, the execution of this particular volume is inconsistent. Instead of making them all conventional short stories, Gaiman decided to be daring and make a couple of them rather surreal. I admire his daring, though not everyone will be satisfied with, say, Delirium's tale which is fairly hard to follow.

Personally, I loved the Despair feature (which cannot really be called a story)--small vignettes of people in Despair, or reflections on her nature.

Of the more traditional stories, the book starts strongly with Death and Desire but finishes kind of weakly with Destruction's and Destiny's. Destruction is a wonderful character, and I was hoping to get something that used him to more effect, but he is hardly there in his tale (indeed, Delirium gets more dialogue and time), and Destiny simply doesn't make a very compelling protagonist (and so Gaiman doesn't give him a story, just kind of talks about Destiny).

The show-stealer, as though there could be any doubt, is Dream's tale, which gives us insight into all of the Endless in the long ago (back to a time when Destruction still wore his mantle, Delirium was Delight and Dream and Desire were the best of friends... kind of).

Sandman fans will appreciate this collection, though it is unlikely that every one will like every tale. Still, as much as I love the universe, these characters, and the author behind it all, I am happy that Mr. Gaiman continues to make his particular brand of art.

Editorial Review:

Featuring the popular characters from the award-winning Sandman series by Neil Caiman, THE SANDMAN: ENDLESS NIGHTS reveals the legend of the Endless, a family of magical and mythical beings who exist and interact in the real world. Born at the beginning of time, Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Delirium, and Destruction are seven brothers and sisters who each lord over their respective realms. In this highly imaginative book that boasts a diverse styles of breathtaking art, these seven peculiar and powerful siblings each reveal more about their true being as they star in their own tales of curiosity and wonder. THE SANDMAN: ENDLESS NIGHTS was the first comic graphic novel to be listed on the "NY Times Best-seller list. SUGGESTED FOR MATURE READERS.

The Circus-1870 to 1950 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I own many circus books and i was advised about this one is a must.
For a $200 circus book it better be great one and the waters better part.
When it arrived I was amazed at the size and the weight of it. Then i open it up and it was like the land of Oz going from black and white to TECHNICOLOR.
In all my life I have never seen a book printed like this with all those beautiful color photos of the circus. Where ever they got those photos they are the best I have even seen in any book.
The WOW factor and it is just amazing book.
It is a must for the circus collector.
I am so glad I got a copy and it is worth every penny of the price.

Editorial Review:

The greatest show on earth: The birth of American popular culture For a hundred years, the American circus was the largest show-biz industry the world had ever seen. During the heyday of the American circus from the mid-1800s to mid-1900s, traveling circuses performed for audiences of up to 12,000-14,000 per show, employed as many as 1,600 men and women, and crisscrossed the country on 20,000 miles of railroad in one season alone. The spectacle of death-defying daredevils, strapping super-heroes and scantily-clad starlets, fearless animal trainers, and startling freaks gripped the American imagination, outshining theater, vaudeville, comedy, and minstrel shows of its day, and ultimately paved the way for film and television to take root in the modern era. Long before the Beat generation made "on the road" expeditions popular, the circus personified the experience and offered many young Americans the dream of adventure, reinvention, excitement, and glamour.

A lush visual selection from the Chanel archive—essential reading for fashionistas and design aficionados everywhere.

Chanel's combination of tradition, originality, and style has always made it the most seductive of fashion labels. Here the House of Chanel opens its private archives, revealing a galaxy of brilliant designs created by Coco Chanel from 1920 onwards. Dazzling clothes, intricate accessories, beautiful models, and timeless design leave no doubt as to the lasting fame of her name and embody everything that has come to symbolize the magic of Chanel.

The book explores five central themes—the suit, the camellia, jewelry, makeup and perfume, the little black dress—and follows the threads from past to present to show how these key items have been rediscovered and reinvented by new designers. It includes many previously unpublished archive photographs and original drawings by Karl Lagerfeld, as well as glorious images from some of the greatest names in fashion photography. 139 illustrations, 83 in color.

Editorial Review:

Glamorous eccentrics are irresistible people. They are irreverent, occasionally impertinent, a tad mysterious, charming, often self-invented, good at applying eyeliner, and above all nonconformist. They are a fabulous confection of style, self-empowerment, and black patent sling backs. Everyone wants to be one, but how? Ubiquitous style guru Simon Doonan has the answer.

By no means a typical how-to manual, Eccentric Glamour is a mixture of cultural commentary and personal disclosure, generously seasoned with gushings of wildly dictatorial, provocative, and reckless style advice. Through cautionary tales and inspirational examples, Doonan shows how to develop your own brand of eccentric glamour -- by magnifying everything that is already unique and idiosyncratic about you.

In these comic essays, interspersed with one-on-one interviews with some of the world's most glamorous eccentrics (including Iman, Lucy Liu, Tilda Swinton, Malcolm Gladwell, and many more), Simon Doonan offers the women of America an alternative to the cheapness and tackiness that currently pass for personal style. Eccentric Glamour is intended as an antidote to the epidemic of slutty dressing and porno-chic that has taken over since the arrival of Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith (may she rest in peace). While the typical TV boobs 'n' Botox makeovers force every woman to look the same, the transformations this book strives to inspire are the very opposite. Dressing like a ho is not just bad taste but boring! In Simon Doonan's book, conformity is the only crime and dressing down the only faux pas.

Eccentric Glamour is every woman's birthright. SO SAY NO TO HO!...and yes to ECCENTRIC GLAMOUR!

A Time to Be Brave 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's very hard not to adore Owly. The drawings, charmingly rendered in black and white, effectively communicate entire stories with very few to no words. They're great for young kids who still don't know how to read that well, but all ages can appreciate the genuine heart-felt nature of the simple stories and the delicate ways in which they are told.
The remarkable thing here is that Owly, in volume 4, shows no signs of slowing down or losing ideas. Each book teaches a new idea or lesson. A Time to Be Brave is about being brave when it's the, well, right time. It's wonderful, children will love it, and adults will treasure it.

Cutest series ever. 4 out of 5 stars.

Andy Runton, Owly: The Way Home and The Bittersweet Summer (Top Shelf, 2004)

The first book in Runton's widely (and justly) praised Owly series, this wonderful little book contains two stories: "The Way Home," in which Owly meets Wormy, who gets lost in a storm and wants Owly to help him find his way home, and "The Bittersweet Summer," where Owly and Wormy become friends with some hummingbirds. Owly is, for the most part, wordless; everything is conveyed with expressions and thought bubbles. It's clever and funny and heartwarming, a definite change of pace from most of the graphic novels that have been appearing for the past few years. Definitely recommended for when you need a pick-me-up. ****

Editorial Review:

Owly is a kind, yet lonely, little owl who's always on the lookout for new friends and adventure. The first graphic novel in the series contains two enchanting novellas, "The Way Home" & "The Bittersweet Summer," wherein Owly discovers the meaning of friendship, and that saying goodbye doesn't always mean forever.

Great poster book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I like this book, the way it show the posters and information about it. the posters and designers ares really good example of poster design.

Editorial Review:

New in Paperback!

In much the way that the CD replaced the album, the poster has waned as a messaging vehicle. The poster has now become a postcard and e-mail blast, leaving many to long for the lost age when posters were not only major promotional vehicles, but also artwork worthy of framing.

Some of the world's best designers just could not stand idle while the poster fell by the wayside. They turned to the poster for personal expression and as an outlet from more restrictive mediums.

This book showcases their breathtaking artwork, which has proven that the poster can still serve as a worthy communications tool. In doing so, they've brought the poster back to prominence. In this book, John Foster has compiled the world's finest new work at the height of this rebirth. There is currently no book on the market that can claim it features a "definitive" poster collection.

Make Magic With An Inkjet!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The thing I love about niche books is that they stand out from all the others in the market. Nice books can be risky, being independent either the market is new or unknown and its kind of like throwing darts, not knowing whether you'll make a big hit or not when you toss that sharp projectile in the air. With 'Fine Art Printing for Photographers: Exhibition Quality Prints with Inkjet Printers' this is certainly a niche market, that being inkjet output for photography lovers. Does the dart find its mark or trail off, careening off the wall??

Bullseye!!

I think that this is a great book for professionals or hobbyist photographers that are looking to get the best quality hard copies of their work from a (much) cheaper alternative way of printing. From looking at different kinds of equipment to settings to sample images, this book does every kind of examination that I would want and does it well.

Great writing, layout, and a great niche market, this is an easy recommendation.

***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Editorial Review:

Today's digital cameras provide image data files allowing large-format output at high resolution. At the same time, printing technology has moved forward at an equally fast pace bringing us new inkjet systems capable of printing in high precision at a very fine resolution, providing an amazing tonality range and longtime stability of inks.

Moreover, these systems are now affordable to the serious photographer. In the hands of knowledgeable and experienced photographers, these new inkjet printers can help create prints comparable to the highest quality darkroom prints on photographic paper.

This book provides the necessary foundation for fine art printing: The understanding of color management, profiling, paper and inks. It demonstrates how to set up the printing workflow as it guides the reader step-by-step through this process from an image file to an outstanding fine art print.
