Extremely inspiring...at a great price!

Editorial Review:

The fourth volume in the best-selling LogoLounge series provides 2,000 totally new logos from designers worldwide. This book, like the previous titles in the series, is compiled in association with LogoLounge.com, a website that was launched by Bill Gardner in 2002. The site is dedicated to logos. Top designers and design firms are hand picked and invited to be "foundation members." Foundation and web site members each supply multiple logos to the site. Each LogoLounge book presents thousands of new logos that have been added to the site, providing designers with an invaluable source for design inspiration and a resource for design solutions. The first portion of the book profiles 10 top designers recent work in the area of logo design; the second part of the book contains almost 2,000 logos organized by logo design (typography, people, mythology, nature, sports, etc.)

Editorial Review:

This book will survey the innovative entrepreneurial options a broad group of contemporary graphic designers have engaged in over the past decade, while also addressing the creative, fabrication and promotion issues necessary to bring unique products to the marketplace. It stems from the School of Visual Arts MFA “Designer as Author/Entrepreneur Program” (most notably, Deborah Adler's unique reinvention of prescription drug packages adopted by Target* and other successful alumni) as well as other well-known and up and coming designers who have created successful cottage and mainstream design businesses (i.e. Charles Spencer Anderson's CSA** image archive and Doug Powell’s HealthSimple*** product line). These firms and individuals have wed their designers’ talents and entrepreneurial spirit to viable products or lines of products.

From the cover and through all the book you'll find many surprises. Lot's of wonderful and talented people. Inspiration.. should be the title of this book.

not what i expected. 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

i was disappointed in Type Addicted. It reminded me of another one of those grad-school senior project showcase picture books. I was expecting for at least SOME verbage on type, and font and the whole revolution in the shift and the need for it in today's broad-ranging design industries. I was hoping for some inspirational, fresh, new ideas and concepts with a few peeks at how they were applied.
I was really bummed, almost returned it. Still would return it. Wish i would have known prior to purchasing more about this book's contents.
thank you.

Editorial Review:

Lettering is a key visual element of great design. The right type can transform any project from mundane to extraordinary, and how to choose and treat font and lettering is a common challenge among designers and artists from every discipline.
Type Addicted not only presents a rich selection of experimental and inspirational typefaces and their applications, it also reveals the diversity of innovative approaches used by contemporary designers to set tone, add impact, reinforce brand identity, and lend character to print and design work in various disciplines. Solutions to any type of dilemma are sure to be discovered among the pages. Examples include work by up and coming names as well as renowned icons from around the world.

Editorial Review:

In 1947, Christian Dior’s “New Look” was greeted with both shock and delight, making headlines around the world. Accompanying the exhibition opening at the Victoria and Albert Museum in September 2007, this lavish book focuses on Parisian and British couture between 1947 and 1957, the decade Dior hailed as fashion’s “golden age.”

The “New Look” symbolized a new femininity. The full skirts and hourglass silhouettes were considered highly decadent, synonymous with luxury and prosperity, in marked contrast to the austerity of the WWII years. Nevertheless, the “New Look” caught the public imagination and ushered in a period of remarkable creativity. The Golden Age of Couture features stunning gowns and exquisite tailoring from Dior as well as from such designers as Balenciaga, Balmain, and Givenchy, along with evocative photographs by the likes of Richard Avedon and Cecil Beaton.

This beautifully designed book reveals the skill and craftsmanship of haute couture along with the inner workings of the exclusive design houses, and the inspiration behind some of the most famous styles of all time.

A Designers Necessity 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Let's start by saying that I've been a Graphic and Multimedia Designer for over 10 years now. Like all beginners I used to think that design was all about what ever you liked best.
Well thats worth a good chuckle these days. As an experienced designer will tell you there's a lot more to good design than personal preference.
Matter of fact it's more like a science than anything else. Once you start diving into color theory and color association you begin to realize that there's quite a lot of information to retain and that there's a right and a wrong color for everything.

Well here's your reference guide!

This book has sat on my desk for the 4+ years that I've owned it and has definitely seen better days. The pages are falling out, the cover is beat ta heck and page 63 in particular has been scanned so that I could fold it up and put it in my pocket more times then I can count.

Leatrice keeps her explanations simple and direct and reinforces them with stellar designs of well known products from top notch agencies.
She adds a large section of color palettes in the middle but they've become a bit dated since the release of this book. Some of them are still nice and will at least inspire you to play with some similar colors.

As an added bonus the back of the book has the CMYK values for all of the pantones if you're one of the cave dwellers that dont have a Pantone booklet (shame on you!).

This is not the definitive color theory hand book!
You wont become a master after reading this and there are quite a few design fundamentals that are not included.
But it is a terrific and beautiful reference that you'll find yourself digging through constantly for information and inspiration.

It belongs on your bookshelf.

Nuff said.

Great book! My wife surprised me with this for Christmas last year, she was out of town on business and found a skateboard shop and asked them for advice, they sold her this. There are photos of old decks that go way back, it really brought back some memories. Best coffee table book ever.

Very good - thorough 5 out of 5 stars.

Enjoyed this book a lot. Great photos and stories from the folks who were there - focusing on mid to late eighties boards and companies. Interesting read about the industry at that time, when, for folks far removed in the midwest or other areas of the US that weren't Southern California or Florida, these boards simply seemed to appear by magic. Now, we see what was happening behind the scenes at that time.

satisfied... 3 out of 5 stars.

I mostly bought this book for an idea I had for a tattoo. Skateboarding was my life for many years. Now I'm older and I wanted to tribute so many of my best days as a kid through skateboarding in a tattoo sleeve. This book will be a GREAT tool for that!

disposable 5 out of 5 stars.

Picture This: How Pictures Work 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I love this book and using it for teaching basic design ideas...a fellow teacher uses it in Psychology! The simple story of Little Red Riding Hood serves as the basis for discussion how line, color, shape, etc. work in art. Such a great idea...wish there were others of this type. I will be using it to teach the elements of art in Art History this fall.

for grownups, too 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Don't be misled by the simple pictures and storybook style into thinking this a just a book for children. I have given this book to several adult friends, including some who are professional artists. We all learned something from Molly Bang's clear and compelling explanations of the principles of visual composition.

Editorial Review:

Everyone knows that a picture tells a thousand words. But what about the elements that make up a picture? Using the tale of Little Red Riding Hood as an example, Molly Bang uses boldly graphic artwork to explain how images--and their individual components--work to tell a story that engages the emotions: Why are diagonals dramatic? Why are curves calming? Why does red feel hot and blue feel cold??First published in 1991, Picture This fans will welcome the new edition's striking redesign and introduce its insights to many other artists and art appreciators alike.?

My view of the world ... 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

... was profoundly influenced by this book. I read it about 30 years ago. I'm pleasantly surprised to find it still in print.

What is the point of this book? 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book was recommended to me and I bought it. I have no idea what the point of this book is...it's just a bunch of tweaked out pictures. I thought it was...well, I don't know what I was thinking. I wasted ten bucks.

Editorial Review:

30 years after its publication Marshall McLuhan's The Medium is the Massage remains his most entertaining, provocative, and piquant book. With every technological and social "advance" McLuhan's proclamation that "the media work us over completely" becomes more evident and plain. In his words, 'so pervasive are they in their personal, political, economic, aesthetic, psychological, moral, ethical and social consequences that they leave no part of us untouched, unaffected, or unaltered'.

McLuhan's remarkable observation that "societies have always been shaped more by the nature of the media by which men communicate than by the content of the communication" is undoubtedly more relevant today than ever before. With the rise of the internet and the explosion of the digital revolution there has never been a better time to revisit Marshall McLuhan.
