Very Informative 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The book has a lot of great information, but some of the print is a little tiny for my old eyes.

Editorial Review:

New in paperback, The Typography Workbook provides an at-a-glance reference book for designers on all aspects of type.

The book is part of Rockport's popular Workbook series of practical and inspirational workbooks that cover all the fundamental areas of the graphic design business. This book presents an abundance of information on type - the cornerstone of graphic design - succinctly and to the point, so that designers can get the information they need quickly and easily.

Whereas many other books on type are either very technical or showcase oriented, this book offers ideas and inspiration through hundreds of real-life projects showing successful, well-crafted usage of type. The book also offers a variety of other content, including choosing fonts, sizes, and colors; incorporating text and illustrations; avoiding common mistakes in text usage; and teaching rules by which to live (and work) by.

Graphic SF Reader 4 out of 5 stars.

Yorick has finally arrived and is a position to look for Beth. However, he runs into a big problem when a journalist from a less than broadsheet quality newspaper finds out he is still alive, and is a story she definitely does not want to lose. He does eventually find Beth, and he certainly gets a hell of a surprise when he sees her.

Great addition to the series 5 out of 5 stars.

Paper Dolls had so many twists to it that I almost couldn't keep up. This series just gets you hooked and never fails to entertain. If you're looking for an example of why Y The Last Man is so highly regarded, check out volume 4 and this volume.

Editorial Review:

The saga of Yorick Brown, the last man on Earth, continues in PAPER DOLLS, writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra's award-winning VERTIGO series. In addition to catching up on the adventures of Yorick's monkey Ampersand (whose body holds the key to stopping the male-killing plague) and telling the origin of Agent 355, PAPER DOLLS chronicles Yorick and 355's search for Yorick's fiancee Beth in Australia -- a search that yields a large dose ofunwanted publicity for the Last Man, and deadly consequences for those he cares for!

Editorial Review:

Vintage aprons and modern designs are turning up in movies, magazine spreads, upscale shops, and hip retail venues like Anthropologie, whose trendy line of aprons is selling as fast as they can stock them. The Apron Book is an infectiously enthusiastic guide to aprons, old and new, that are suddenly everywhere.

Aprons take us back to our favorite place¿hearth and home. Vintage aprons help us remember home and family the way they used to be, while bright and sassy contemporary aprons confirm that nesting is all the rage. Actress and trendsetter Julia Roberts has a closetful of vintage aprons. Celebrity custom-made apron auctions have become an annual event for several popular charities in the past few years.

The Apron Book provides full-color photos of new and vintage aprons from the author's collection, patterns for four basic apron styles and myriad variations, recipes, tips on collecting and preserving vintage aprons, and heart-tugging stories from the author's traveling apron exhibit. The book also explores the heyday of aprons and looks at the various roles aprons still play when worn in the kitchen, around the house, by the backyard grill, on the job, and for special occasions.

Warm and inviting¿but like an apron quite practical!¿this book is a celebration of a great American icon and reminds us of what we loved about the people who wore them.

Stefanie does it again! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Glam Knits is full of slinky, retro-styled womens' designs. The patterns are mainly cardigans (yay!) and tunic tops/dresses, with a couple of accessories to round out the collection. About half are seamless top-down raglans with the remainder being set-in sleeve and kimono styles. Sizes range from 32" to 58". Standout designs include the very fitted bell-sleeved cardigan worked in sportweight cashmere, a tweed cardigan with great shaping and an exaggerated collar, and the blue hooded coat with puffed sleeves which delight me on an Anne-of-Green-Gables level.

The yarns used are definitely luxe, but thankfully not obscure. Lots of recognizable names that you'll have no trouble locating.

All in all, a good book with styles you won't see repeated in every other knitting publication.

Editorial Review:

Knitters are drawn to beautiful specialty and luxe yarns, and Glam Knits shows readers how to knit these gorgeous yarns into garments and accessories with a high-fashion persona that only Stefanie Japel can capture. Sophisticated evening wear pieces like camisoles, dresses, skirts, blouses and more are silhouetted straight from the runway without being overly trendy or easily dated. Stefanie's patterns feature a wide variety of knitting techniques including top-down construction, set-in sleeves, side-to-side knitting, hand stitching and more. Readers will appreciate the lavish photography and the wearable nature of the patterns.
  • Showcases 25 patterns that are both wearable and glamorous - all feature luxurious yarns such as silks, angoras and cashmeres
  • Unique to the marketplace in that it shows readers how to incorporate specialty yarns into their garments and accessories in a way that looks couture rather than homemade

great artwork, interesting text 4 out of 5 stars.

I totally love fantasy, folklore, and mythology, so this book was naturally of great interest to me. The pictures of various classes of mythical creatures were absolutely wonderful, and the text that described the myths upon which the pictures are based was interesting and fun to read. I would highly recommend this book for someone interested in a book about fairy folklore that's not overly academic.

Excelent Reading 5 out of 5 stars.

An amazing book, it totally takes me away when I'm reading it. Beautifully illustrated, the drawings are amazing, so detailed. This one specially is a superb edition, very well designed, and totally worth the price.

Editorial Review:

This volume explores the realm of elves, pixies, leprechauns, dryads and other mythical creatures. This special 25th anniversary edition of this title features eight new pages and 20 new pieces of art by Brian Froud and Alan Lee.

Editorial Review:

Starting in the twentieth century, the American accessory designer looked to Europe and then said, I can do better. In a book commissioned by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and edited by Candy Pratts Price, with writing by Jessica Glasscock and Art Tavee, their achievements are revealed: a century of objects of necessity and desire poured forth to boutiques and department stores across the United States and the world. The forward-thinking American accessory designer, in collusion with America's royalty the Hollywood star and in sync with the unstoppable dominance of a rebellious popular culture, has assembled a cabinet of curiosities, including everything from Adrian s witty Hollywood hats to Ralph Lauren s all-American accoutrement to Madonna s rubber bracelets. It is a tradition that continues today with a stellar group of CFDA designers whose work exemplifies the American accessory.

Graduation gift! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My dad got this for me as a college graduation gift, and I love it. I've always wanted this book, so was thrilled when I opened it up and saw what it was :)
In my opinion, the matte finish of the pages suit the artwork well. The only painting that might have benefited from a gloss finish is probably the large ladybug one where the body of the ladybug is one shade of red while the background is another shade...if you have this book and know what I'm talking about.

charley harper: an illustrated life 3 out of 5 stars.

the unique wildlife art of charley harper did deserve a retrospective dais of honor, but the quality of printing is so low and disappointing...
as a collector and a passionate wildlife and wildlife art enthusiast i would have bought this book anyway, but if you are looking for high quality art books, then this is not the right address/investment.

A tremendous resource for animators 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've been looking for a book like this for years! I've been able to find some great books about the principles of moving an animated character around and the "Art of"-type of books about a particular movie can be very inspiring and educational in their own right, but a book that deals with the thought process that goes into the production design of an animated film is long overdue. I wish it could have delved deeper into the more theoretical "nuts and bolts" of things like setting up camera shots for both 2D and 3D animation--I guess I'm looking for something more technical, where this book still has a "coffee table" feel to some of the individual chapters on particular films--but it's already had a big impact on the way I lay out scenes in my own work. I have a feeling this one is going to be on my drawing table for a long time!

Editorial Review:

Hans Bacher is acknowledged as one of the greats of production design for animation and he has been given unparalleled access to Disney's archives to uncover eye-popping examples of both his own work and that of his colleagues. With illustrations from Bambi, Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Brother Bear and many more - it is a visual feast of never-before-seen artwork, complete with insight from the artist on how and why they were designed as they were.

Key features and benefits:

* Sneak a peak behind the scenes! With 400 never-before-seen illustrations from classic films like Bambi, Beauty and the Beast and Lilo & Stitch
* Learn from one of the true industry greats!Hans Bacher is one of the best known production designers in the industry
* Beautiful and insightful - offers inspiration to designers in animation, film and game

Editorial Review:

George Lois is advertising s most famous art director. He founded the creative revolution that spawned modern advertising, as his iconoclastic talent created icons dramatizing the problems, solutions, foibles, and promises of American life. Astute media critics recognize Lois as a pioneering avant-garde mover of the culture. In this mind-boggling archaeological dig into his ouevre, Lois discovers, and reveals, the influences on his unforgettable concepts as he probes the echoes in his mind s eye, tracing more than one hundred of his Big Ideas back to their origins. Each double-page is a visual tour de force, a blueprint of creative inspiration, and a journey of discovery that will keep your eyes shifting back and forth between each Lois concept and the seed that gave it life.
