Editorial Review:

A celebrity fashion designer gives every woman the red-carpet treatment in this foolproof guide to choosing clothes that make you look fabulous—with tailor-made tips for forty- eight body types.

From Oprah to Eva Longoria, top L.A. designer Bradley Bayou has dressed women of all shapes and sizes and knows that every woman has her own natural combination of silhouette shape, height, and weight. Style is not about fitting into the size you think is sexy, it is about picking clothes that fit your body correctly and that create balance.

In The Science of Sexy, Bayou helps readers identify their silhouette shape (triangle, inverted triangle, rectangle, or hourglass) and combines that information with a height/weight chart to determine which of the forty-eight “fitting rooms” to go to in the book. Each fitting room has Bradley’s specific advice on the clothes and accessories to wear and avoid, and how to create balance using color, scale, proportions, and fabric.

Editorial Review:

From its origins in the eighteenth-century literature of terror to its contemporary manifestations in vampire fiction, cinema, and art, the gothic has embraced the powers of horror and the erotic macabre. “Gothic” is an epithet with a strange history – evoking images of death, destruction, and decay. Ironically, its negative connotations have made the gothic an ideal symbol of rebellion for a wide range of cultural outsiders.

Popularly associated with black-clad teenagers and rock musicians, gothic fashion encompasses not only subcultural styles (from old-school goth to cyber-goth and beyond) but also high fashion by such designers as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano of Christian Dior, Rick Owens, Olivier Theyskens, and Yohji Yamamoto. Fashion photographers, such as Sean Ellis and Eugenio Recuenco, have also drawn on the visual vocabulary of the gothic to convey narratives of dark glamour. As the text and lavish illustrations in this book suggest, gothic fashion has deep cultural roots that give it an enduring potency.

A must for retailers! 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

At last a book that that not only explains the concept of visual merchandising, but also demonstrates how to implement the various techniques that help promote retail sales.

The book is divided in to easy to read chapters from window displays to in-store layouts and even covers a brief history of window displays. This book is a MUST for retailers, it covers areas of visual merchandising that are often forgotten- ambience, signage, window props, colour and mannequins.

I found the section on store design particularly interesting.

From fashion to home the book has been clearly well researched.

The generous amount of images have been sourced from the worlds influential retailers (Japan, Paris, Hong Kong, USA and UK to name a few) and the illustrations are a useful tool to help explain the principles of visual merchandising.

Editorial Review:

A great introduction for retail students, this book offers a user-friendly reference guide to all aspects of visual merchandising and covers both window dressing and in-store areas. Using examples from a range of stores from fashion emporia to supermarkets, the book offers practical advice on the subject, supported by hints and tips from established visual merchandisers. It reveals the secrets of their tool kit, and information on the use of mannequins, the latest technology, how to construct and source props, and explains the psychology behind shopping and buyer behavior.

Presented through color photographs, diagrams of floor layouts, and store case studies, and including invaluable information such as a glossary of terms used in the industry, Visual Merchandising is an essential handbook for anyone working in and learning about this exciting area.

WOW!!! Your search for the perfect knitting book ends here! 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I am nothing short of blown away by this book! I had to go through it several times just to absorb it all and I had trouble putting it down. The designs are original and fantastic. I would be much more than pleased to receive any of them as a gift, esp. the Patchwork Blanket (for babies, I love the apple!!), or the child's Kangaroo Vest (can you tell I have two little boys?). I would die for a pair of the socks, esp. the Embroidered Flower Socks. The Pocket Tote and Cuddle Bear are two other things that jump right out at me. (You won't believe the cutness contained in the bear!) The Cabled Cardigan in the "Mothers" section is possibly the prettiest sweater I've ever set my eyes upon. The creativity and sheer beauty of the Bird's Nest Pincushion and Birdie Felted Patchwork Bath Mat are unparallel to anything I have ever seen. How can so much talent fit into one person??! I would have expected this book to have been put together by a think-tank instead of one young lady. I wish Amazon would have included better pages from the book to show in the pictures. You can see the Bird's Nest Pincushion, but unfortunately you will have to take my word for how gorgeous the other projects are that I mentioned. Lastly, I want to comment on the variety this book offers... things to wear, things to decorate with, functional items, even Juggling Balls!! Something for everyone in your life. (Feast your eyes upon the "Table of Contents" to see all that awaits you (click on the picture of the book)). Look no further and purchase this gem! It will keep you busy now and for years to come. But beware, once you give away one of the gifts and the word spreads that you were the giver, you will have people lined up at your door begging for the same gift for themselves!

Everything said in the description is so true!

Editorial Review:

The first major book on Japanese textile artist Itchiku Kubota, published to accompany a touring exhibition.

This lavishly illustrated book showcases fifty-five masterworks by Japanese kimono artist Itchiku Kubota (1917-2003). Initially determined to unlock the secrets of dyed and painted Japanese textiles of the fourteenth to early seventeenth centuries, Kubota ultimately invented a unique method of decoration. His work combines stitch-resist and ink drawing with a complex layering of color to achieve hauntingly beautiful landscapes with richly textured surfaces and an impressionistic rendering of nature never before seen in the textile arts.

Although Kubota produced kimono for Japanese celebrities, his primary endeavor was the creation of a series of monumental kimonos intended only for display. Mount Fuji, Universe, and the thirty-four-piece Symphony of Light are his most important series. The latter two are intended to be shown sequentially, much like the panels of a Japanese screen or decorated sliding doors. This entirely new approach to the use of the kimono as a vehicle for pictorial imagery has enabled Kubota's work to reach beyond the traditional boundaries of the single garment and elevated his work to installation art.

This book accompanies a touring exhibition and features essays by Dale Carolyn Gluckman, Asian textile specialist and former costumes and textile curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Hollis Goodall, curator of Japanese art at LACMA, as well as an interview with Mr. Kubota's son and artistic heir, Itchiku Kubota II, by Derrick Cartwright, Director of the San Diego Museum of Art. 200 color illustrations.

This book consists of fashion illustrations of many contemporary artists. There are no tutorials in the book but finished drawings. They are prepared in many different mediums and with use of computer programs as well. For me they are great source of inspiration. I recommend the book.

Shoe lacing for ALL ages ! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book was a surprise ! I picked it up because, as a graphic designer, I was interested in its unusual book design. But, after leafing through it, I found lacing styles for all kinds of shoes -- not just children's shoes and athletic shoes. Want to know how to do a Roman lacing for your dress shoes ? This book has it. How about a useful lacing style for hiking boots or bicycling shoes ? It's here.

Of course, the stars of the book are the neat decorative lacings. Adding a flair to your everyday shoes, a decorative lacing will set you apart from the crowd. My favorites are "starburst" and "checkerboard."

With a little creativity, you can apply the lacing styles to anything with a lace-and-eyelet system. For example, Renaissance faire performers, such as myself, will enjoy this book for new ways to lace up their boots, tunics, bracers, doublets, and corsets.

In short, this is a great book for creative folks all ages.
