Fantastic Series 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book focuses on the more notable landmark buildings around the globe but does include a few of your average neighborhood homes. One of our favorites is the castle. It has easy to follow instructions so that everyone, even the not-so-artistic types can create AWESOME pictures with only some concentration and a desire to succeed. I highly recommend this book and others from the "Draw 50" series to ANYONE who is interested in drawing.

Good intro to drawing 4 out of 5 stars.

My son took to this book right away. It gives good drawing directions, but what I like about it most is that it familiarizes him with some classic architecture and styles.

great for beginners! 5 out of 5 stars.
76 of 78 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for an easy and non-specific drawing book about animals, this is the one. It has a wide range of them, from birds to insects, from wild felines to cute pets and farm animals. I would say this book is a great starting point for anyone who is interested in drawing but doesn't know any techniques or doesn't feel capable - yet - of drawing animals instantly. It is perfect for beginners because it does not use hard techniques, such as shading, and with it you are able to discover which kinds of animals you would like to draw more - and then you can go for "Draw 50 Birds" or "Draw 50 Cats", which are two examples that, comparing to this one, are more specific and therefore more challenging books. "Draw 50 Animals" uses the step-by-step method and is very easy to follow. You start with simple lines and shapes, and little by little you turn them into the animal which you thought you would never be able to draw. The result is really amazing, and a great self-esteem increaser for beginners (at least for me it was!). This book is sure to please anyone who uses it and anyone who sees the result of using it!

Back in Texas 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

For the first time in the series, the Jesse-Cassidy-Tulip team is broken up, where Tulip and Cassidy are pushed completely into the background. "Salvation" focuses solely on Jesse Custer's experiences immediately after the cataclysmic events as depicted in "Tears in the Sun." Describing, appropriately enough, Jesse's stay in the racially polarized Salvation, Texas, Jesse's brawling talents land him the peachy job of town sheriff. Of course, being on the right side of the law for once only further encourages young Jesse to reach out and touch somebody. His rough and tumble ways seem to work, though, as his good conscience guides him to physically discipline only those who `deserve' it. Salvation eventually becomes a more just and humane town. Ennis is to be saluted for introducing the politics of race, here, and exploring small-town interracial relationships. As is unfortunately too often the case with other comic titles, African-Americans either don't exist or are the bad guys.

One thing I didn't like about this book was Ennis' excessive use of deus ex machina that makes the narrative creak - some of the volume's tenser moments are resolved rather dubiously (a fortuitous bolt of lightening, Jesse's dog Skeeter does his best impression of Lassie on several occasions). Also, there is one rather amazing coincidence/revelation that occurs soon after Jesse rolls into town involving one of Salvation's citizens. The sheer improbability of it really rubbed me the wrong way, and seemed like lazy, overly sentimental writing (which Ennis is almost never guilty of). Even more amazing was how this coincidence wasn't realized by the person even earlier than it was.

However, as always, this is immensely likeable reading. Ennis keeps churning out the freak show characters that demonstrate the diversity of the human condition. Although the stories have been better, Ennis nevertheless manages to confound, amuse, and perturb.

Neither Here Nor There 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I can't say I was blown away with this book, nor can I say I was disappointed, this the rating of 3 stars. It has great text to tell you "why" each part is important which a lot of books seem to lack any decent text at all. So for that I give it 5 stars.

I was "expecting" at least some technique tips and pointers, like, here's a good way to draw texture on a leaf, or more concrete examples, like maybe some "tips" in the margins or something. A little cheat to keep you saying "oh cool" or something. At some point it seems to drown in text, which I suppose is probably what a beginner needs, but I'm more of a lets get to it kind of person. I want to see at least something fun at the end of my first lesson, not a squiggly line, so I would suggest complementing this book with a tips and technique book to get a well rounded beginners experience to keep it fun and keep you motivated.

Obviously my expectations were not met, and that may be my own fault. I would say if you are a beginner, this will give you the start and the "classroom" portion, but add a book that will add the FUN and instant success to it too. It's a decent book, give it a shot.

Editorial Review:

Based on the author's own workshops, this title helps new artists create competent, eloquent drawings. A series of progressive lessons demonstrates such essential skills as recording edges, creating dimensions, adding accuracy, developing value, compositional balancing elements, and drawing the human face, both frontal and profile views. Step by step readers learn how to create a reasonable likeness of an object and give it spatial depth using simple black-and-white mediums such as pens, pencils, charcoal and graphite wash. Examples and tips for success from beginning students who have worked on the same material confirm readers' successes and allow them to consider the advice and impressions of others at the same level.

Better off taking a fashion sketching class 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because I *just* wanted templates. (I know that as a designer, my strong suit is not in fashion sketching like this, never has been- but sometimes you have to.)

What this book provides is more of a how to create the bodies you want based off of the 9-head model. For some, this is great- a classroom in the book. For me, who has been working in this field for a long time and I just needed to crank some bodies out without putting in (for me) an excruciating ammount of work, it fell short.

Also, the proportions of the bodies are a little strange and the hand placement a bit rough. I spent more time fiddling with more natural hand positions on the templates than actually drawing the garments on them.

It is a good book for those who can't attend an actual sketching course, but if you're looking for templates- good luck.

Editorial Review:

FIGURE DRAWING FOR FASHION DESIGN offers a concise, topic by topic guide to acquiring and perfecting these skills, concentrating on the female form. The coverage provided means that this book is ideal both for those who want to apply themselves professionally to fashion design, and for all enthusiasts of drawing the human body. Fashion plates are the primary means of visualizing ideas and concepts in costume and fashion design. To give an accurate impression of what is in a designer’s mind it is vital to have complete mastery of the rules of figure drawing. Here, realism and anatomical precision are the chief values, whereas for costume and fashion, stylization and exaggeration are ways of adding individuality and verve to a plate, and of focusing attention on specific elements.

Excellent guide for a young, developing artist 5 out of 5 stars.
51 of 54 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book for my daughter who is twelve years old. She has always had interests in art, and drawing in particular. This book clearly demonstrates techniques that will allow her to develop her existing skills as well as add new ones. I wish that it was one of a series of books rather than a single publication. She loves it.

Great Starter Book for Kids 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

We purchased this book for our 7-year old daughter. The book is written and illustrated where she can read it herself and learn as she goes. She was able to improve on her drawing of an apple withing 5 minutes of using this book. It has great drawing techniques that a young child can easily pick up and learn themselves or with the help of a parent or older sibling.

Editorial Review:

Young artists can now learn all the fundamentals of art, including basic shapes, proportion, perspective, shading and movement in drawings with this easy-to-read instructional. With over 350 illustrations, Sketching and Drawing for Children starts out with simple objects, then moves on to progressively more difficult and complex pictures and scenes.
