Shoe Calendar 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I personally received this calendar as a gift in 2007 and 2008 (and I am sure I will get 2009!). I purchased the 2009 for a gift for someone who had seen mine and they LOVED it!! If you like shoes, this is it!

Perfect for shoe-aholics 5 out of 5 stars.

This daily calendar feeds your shoe-soul. Each day has a great photo of some very interesting shoe designs.

Editorial Review:

Pierre Cardin and Robert Clergerie. Manolo Blahnik and Balenciaga. Fornarina, Ferragamo, Maud Frizon's iridescent pump, and Christian Dior's Olympic-inspired shoe--with a miniature globe for the heel. With sales surging 46% in 2008, "Shoes" is an irresistible parade of pumps, mules, and flats, boots, spikes, sling-backs, and platforms. Even if they don't all fit in your closet, they will fit on your desktop. Inspired by Linda O'Keefe's international bestseller "Shoes", with 535,000 copies sold in the U.S. alone.

Editorial Review:

One of the most prolific and successful artists of the Golden Age of American Illustration, J. C. Leyendecker captivated audiences throughout the first half of the 20th century. Leyendecker is best known for his creation of the archetype of the fashionable American male with his advertisements for Arrow Collar. These images sold to an eager public the idea of a glamorous lifestyle, the bedrock upon which modern advertising was built. He also was the creator instantly recognizable icons, such as the New Year’s baby and Santa Claus, that are to this day an integral part of the lexicon of Americana and was commissioned to paint more Saturday Evening Post covers than any other artist.

Leyendecker lived for most of his adult life with Charles Beach, the Arrow Collar Man, on whom the stylish men in his artwork were modeled.

The first book about the artist in more than 30 years, J. C. Leyendecker features his masterworks, rare paintings, studies, and other artwork, including the 322 covers he did for the Post. With a revealing text that delves into both his artistic evolution and personal life, J. C. Leyendecker restores this iconic image maker’s rightful position in the pantheon of great American artists.

A Great Primer 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a great primer for someone who wants to stop the aging process, but doesn't know where to start. The book kept me interested in reading more, looking forward to the next chapter. Dr. Wechsler is straight-forward in telling us what really works, versus what you should not waste your money on. I like that she names specific products in her recommendations.

She also teaches you to make specific life-style changes to reduce "stress-aging". You may know a lot of it already, but she will take you through a 9-day renewal process to reinforce good behavior. Yes, most of it is common sense, but what better program than one from a psychiatrist AND a dermatologist for optimum results?

The only issue I have is her recommendation for Cetaphil as one of her top cleanser choices. My wife says: "As a skin-care junkie, I do my best to avoid sodium laurel sulfate all over my body, so Cetaphil is a no-no!".

Editorial Review:

From one of only two physicians in America board-certified in both dermatology and psychiatry, this one-of-a-kind book provides a unique perspective to people's skin troubles by linking them with life's stresses---and provides the solutions to both.

Fun, Hip, Cool Book....but not for younger teens & pre-teens 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I got this book this summer for my daughter, age 12, and her friend. Both girls are crafty, creative (they take art classes together), and have used a sewing machine independently. My daughter's friend even makes tailored clothes for herself! I thought the book would give them some fun & funky ideas. They did enjoy paging through it and both did manage to find a pattern to make. But I'm not sure they'll come back to this much because they felt the styles were too skimpy for them. Neither one is more modest than an average 12 year old, but they still didn't feel comfortable wearing most of the shirts out of the house. They were really amazed by the whole chapter of tube tops. (They asked me "Who would wear these things?")

Too bad...These girls are a perfect market for something like this. I guess I'll have to keep looking.

Editorial Review:

Make it yours. This inspirational guide with DIY attitude has everything you need to know about the world’s great T-shirt: how to cut it, sew it, deconstruct it, reconstruct it, and best of all, transform it. Features more than 100 projects (plus 200 variations) for customized tees, tank tops, tube tops, T-skirts—even handbags, a patchwork blanket, iPod cozies, leg warmers, and more. Not a DIY expert? Not to worry. More than one third of the projects are no sew, meaning anyone who can wield a pair of scissors can put a personal stamp on her wardrobe. But the sewing basics are here too: backstitch and whipstitch, gather and ruche, appliqué and drawstrings. And the mission statement for Generation T: Ask not what your T-shirt can do for you; ask what you can do for your T-shirt. And then Do-It-Yourself!

Oh, how I wish I had this in school! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I wore holes in piles of paper trying to work up to the basic points so magnificently outlined in this book! It's like having an art teacher with you (without the snide remarks) to bring your abilities to the top.

If you are planning on studying fashion, or just doing it for fun, you need this book.

Highly recommended!

GREAT For Beginners and Those Who Have Experience 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm wanting to become a fashion designer and i bought this book and i was amazed. it really teaches you how to draw fashion models (and people in general) in all different poses. it shows you so many different poses both with an actual person modeling the pose and then a block figure showing you how to draw it. after the structure is learned, it teaches you in a really easy way how to flesh it out, and then how to draw the clothes and how the clothes are supposed to look at folds and creases. if you like this book, i recommend Draw Fashion Models! by Lee Hammond, a great book that goes in depth into more poses and how you should draw the clothes and how they look when the arms are raised, when you're leaning on one hip, etc.

i really recommend buying this amazing book, it's straightforward and very helpful!

Editorial Review:

A short, sleek novel of encounters set in Tokyo during the witching hours between midnight and dawn, and every bit as gripping as Haruki Murakami’s masterworks The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Kafka on the Shore.

At its center are two sisters—Eri, a fashion model slumbering her way into oblivion, and Mari, a young student soon led from solitary reading at an anonymous Denny’s toward people whose lives are radically alien to her own: a jazz trombonist who claims they’ve met before, a burly female “love hotel” manager and her maid staff, and a Chinese prostitute savagely brutalized by a businessman. These “night people” are haunted by secrets and needs that draw them together more powerfully than the differing circumstances that might keep them apart, and it soon becomes clear that Eri’s slumber—mysteriously tied to the businessman plagued by the mark of his crime—will either restore or annihilate her.

After Dark
moves from mesmerizing drama to metaphysical speculation, interweaving time and space as well as memory and perspective into a seamless exploration of human agency—the interplay between self-expression and empathy, between the power of observation and the scope of compassion and love. Murakami’s trademark humor, psychological insight, and grasp of spirit and morality are here distilled with an extraordinary, harmonious mastery.
