Editorial Review:

Mapmaking fulfills one of our most ancient and deepseated desires: understanding the world around us and our place in it. But maps need not just show continents and oceans: there are maps to heaven and hell; to happiness and despair; maps of moods, matrimony, and mythological places. There are maps to popular culture, from Gulliver's Island to Gilligan's Island. There are speculative maps of the world before it was known, and maps to secret places known only to the mapmaker. Artists' maps show another kind of uncharted realm: the imagination. What all these maps have in common is their creators' willingness to venture beyond the boundaries of geography or convention.
You Are Here is a wide-ranging collection of such superbly inventive maps. These are charts of places you're not expected to find, but a voyage you take in your mind: an exploration of the ideal country estate from a dog's perspective; a guide to buried treasure on Skeleton Island; a trip down the road to success; or the world as imagined by an inmate of a mental institution. With over 100 maps from artists, cartographers, and explorers, You are Here gives the reader a breath-taking view of worlds, both real and imaginary.

I love this book for the quilting designs it inspires. If you're stuck for ideas, open McCallum's book and start drawing.

Great reference book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have a collection of books on designs and historical motifs. This is one of the most useful. I'm using it to create designs for decorating pottery.

Editorial Review:

Artists, designers, craftspeople, and embroiderers will find endless inspiration in this rich sourcebook, filled with 4,000 beautiful images of flowers and plants in a range of styles and from a variety of historical periods. All the high-quality, beautifully drafted pictures can easily be enlarged and photocopied, and the organization makes it easy to find just what's wanted. The choice is simply astounding. Pore through Egyptian, Greek, Romanesque, Byzantine, Folk, Medieval, Islamic, Chinese, Japanese, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco motifs, blossoming in profusion on the pages. In addition to floral favorites, such as lilies, roses, and tulips, other featured plants include vegetables, a cornucopia of fruits, and trees, from firs to palms. An introductory design class helps readers make the most of this bounty.

Not for everyone 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am not a designer. It was only after I bought this that I realized I was really looking for inspiration (for clothing and interior). The color index contains a lot of color combinations, but presented in a way that did not work for me. Somehow all the color combinations look boring, perhaps because there are many similar color combinations packed together on small pages, with tiny images. For my purposes, "A Book of Colors" by Shigenobu Kobayashi was better. It contains less color combinations and no rgb values, but there are less very similar combinations on a single page, and the images are slightly bigger. The result is more inspiring to me. So the color index is not for everyone.

Editorial Review:

The best-selling author of Idea Index and Layout Index returns with an all-new title! Color Index provides more than one thousand color combinations and formulas--guaranteed to help graphic artists solve design dilemmas and create effective images for both print and the Web.

From progressive colors to natural tones, Color Index makes choosing hues for any job easier! Designers will start working with color in exciting new ways and create original, eye-catching designs that pop off the page. It's all the inspiration they need to explore and experiment with color as never before!

Just like the other clever little design books in this series, Color Index is portable, packed with inspiration, and neatly packaged in a colorful, sturdy vinyl jacket.

Editorial Review:

Massive Change is a modern illustrated primer on the new inventions, technologies, and events that are affecting the human race worldwide. The book is a part of a broader research project by Bruce Mau Design intended to provoke debate and discussion about the "familiar objects and techniques that are transforming our lives." In essays, interviews, and provocative imagery aimed at a broad audience, Massive Change explores the changing force of design in the contemporary world, and in doing so expands the definition of design to include the built environment, transportation technologies, revolutionary materials, energy and information systems, and living organisms. The book is divided into 11 heavily illustrated sections covering major areas of change in contemporary society - such as urbanism and architecture, the military, health and living, and wealth and politics. Each section intersperses intriguing documentary images with a general introductory essay, extended captions, and interviews with leading thinkers, including engineers, designers, philosophers, scientists, architects, artists, and writers.

Picture This: How Pictures Work 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I love this book and using it for teaching basic design ideas...a fellow teacher uses it in Psychology! The simple story of Little Red Riding Hood serves as the basis for discussion how line, color, shape, etc. work in art. Such a great idea...wish there were others of this type. I will be using it to teach the elements of art in Art History this fall.

for grownups, too 5 out of 5 stars.

Don't be misled by the simple pictures and storybook style into thinking this a just a book for children. I have given this book to several adult friends, including some who are professional artists. We all learned something from Molly Bang's clear and compelling explanations of the principles of visual composition.

Editorial Review:

Everyone knows that a picture tells a thousand words. But what about the elements that make up a picture? Using the tale of Little Red Riding Hood as an example, Molly Bang uses boldly graphic artwork to explain how images--and their individual components--work to tell a story that engages the emotions: Why are diagonals dramatic? Why are curves calming? Why does red feel hot and blue feel cold??First published in 1991, Picture This fans will welcome the new edition's striking redesign and introduce its insights to many other artists and art appreciators alike.?

Packaging is everywhere you look—it’s in your refrigerator, your medicine cabinet, your closets, on the streets, in the stores, etc. Putting together a compendium of 1,000 of the best packages will offer designers a true array of inspiration and illustrate why people make the buying choices they make. The package of a product often times makes or breaks a sale—consumers are drawn to certain colors, graphics, and shapes, and this book will have plenty to offer of all three.

This will be the ninth book in the 1,000 series following 1,000 Bags, Tags & Labels, 1,000 Greetings, 1,000 Graphic Elements, 1,000 Type Treatments, 1,000 Icons, Symbols + Pictograms

definatly not a picture book 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be very helpful in getting you to think of the box. Instead of being like a picture book with not much information, it tells you how to come up with ideas and explains the process of making a good design. This is a great book to have if you already have those picture books with just designs and need something to help you with actually creating your own designs.

A real world book 4 out of 5 stars.

Unlike design books filled w/ eye-candy & no direction on processes, Mark Oldach steers the reader through well defined concepts & thoughts. An excellent book for all designers who wish to communicate through design.

A great book about how to practise as a graphic designer 5 out of 5 stars.

I love my mac, but I also love not using it. This book tells a lot about a designers prosess outside the mac. I found this sentence in the book: "Designers have a responsebility to do what they are paid to - design .... To many designers use the (mac) for a substitute for thinking". So right!

Great resource 5 out of 5 stars.

This book packs a lot of punch. It's written in an easy to understand format that is very creative with handwritten notes from the author in the margins. It's a great source of ideas with the numerous full-color case studies that are included. This book does an excellent job of providing graphic designers with step-by-step instructions on how to ask the right questions at the initial client meeting, go back to the office and download the information, then take the information and begin generating ideas, and finally, select which ideas should be developed. It's an invaluable tool for new designers.

More than beautiful... 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This volume on design is both beautiful and insightful. In a bookcase full of vacuous logo "collections", Capsule's effort stands out as a genuinely intelligent, useful, and inspiring work.

Editorial Review:

The nuts and bolts of effective logo design.

The design bar is at an all time high for those brave enough to participate in the industry. Today's designers must be clear on all the steps necessary to create work that stands out in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Unfortunately, most design books only focus on type, color, and layout issues. The Design Matters series takes a more in-depth approach, allowing designers to learn not only how to create work that is aesthetically appealing, but that is also strategy-driven and smart.

This book focuses on creating logos, while others in the series dissect brochures, packaging, publications, and letterhead systems. Each book offers all the essential information needed to execute strong designs in concert with beautiful and well-crafted examples, so readers can successfully hit the mark every time.

Editorial Review:

The Spectrum awards fill an important niche in the art world, by recognizing the often-overlooked contributions of fantasy artists. Spectrum 4: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art includes all the juried work from the Spectrum awards for 1996--and if this collection was any indication, it was a banner year. The book itself has an excellent, art-centered layout that keeps commentary to a minimum and lets the individual pieces speak for themselves.

Expect to be dazzled repeatedly by the sheer variety and quality of the work anthologized here. Spectrum 4 does a fine job of demonstrating how much variety exists in fantasy art. Alongside the ever-present fantasy standards (dragons, fairies, vampires) you will find highly original, challenging works of often-extraordinary breadth. Highlights include brilliant pieces from James Gurney's Dinotopia, Rafael Olbinski's haunting Calendar, and this year's Grand Master Award winners Leo and Diane Dillion. This book is sure to satisfy art lovers craving the bizarre, the terrifying, and the spectacular. --Brendan J. LaSalle

Editorial Review:

"Printwork" showcases the intimate relationship between prints and publications or promotions design. Graphic designers are continually challenged to find new ways to lend impact and interest to their work. The special printing methods collected in "Print Work" are employed to great effect in book and product design in innovative and exciting ways. Colors, gloss, and texture all add visual and tactile appeal to products, packaging and print designs. "Look and feel" has never been more important to the success of a product or campaign. "Print Work" encourages designers to experiment with unusual printing methods and techniques and challenges them to think beyond the computer screen and into the dimension of the realm of the senses. Presenting actual techniques featured in the book inviting readers to touch each page, allowing them access to the haptic quality of the finished products.
