Good for entry level information 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I use this book to teach a Graphic Production class. This is a good entry level book to wet one's interest in the broad scope of each part of the printing production process. It touchs on everything from scheduling to design to prepress to actually getting it on press al the way through the bindery and shipping processes. Without this basic understanding, new design students have no understanding of what they are creating. This gives a brief snippet about each process. The early designer then at least has an idea of how their final products will possibly be used.

Each area of print production can have its own book and ideally designers will learn these processes in depth. As an entry level book however this has all of the basics without overwhelming the student. It also delivers the dry information that creative folks need in simple clear form. After thirty years in this industry I welcome the simplicity this book provides.

Editorial Review:

Designers can save time, money and frustration with this essential guide to printing. Covering all of the topics that have made it a popular title for years, along with the latest developments in the industry, Getting It Printed features:

* A comprehensive look at how to work with printers--everything from estimates, pricing and negotiating to trade customs and quality guidelines

* Easy-to-follow explanations of the top printing processes and techniques

* All of the information designers need to choose the right papers and inks for their projects

* Hard-to-find knowledge about proofing, output and color

Whether they're independent, in-house or students, designers will want to have this book at hand. It's the ultimate printing resource!

Process, process, process! 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 46 people found this review helpful.

This book is almost a catalog of every printmaking process around. It covers all the basics: intaglio, relief, screen prints, litho, and monoprint. It covers related technique, including embossed "dimensional" prints (aka "blind" prints), molded paper, and more. It devotes special attention to collographs, prints from textured or collage surface, and much too much more to describe.

Best, the tools, materials, and how-to of every process are described in a fair bit of detail. Because so many processes are listed, each one gets just a short section, nowhere near what a printmaker would need in practice. Still, the descriptions serve at least two purposes. First, they may entice an artist into learning more about a process.

Second, and more importantly for me, is that you don't have to be a printmaker to read this book and benefit from it. I'm a fan of fine prints, even though I don't make prints myself. I like to know what I'm looking at. I like to see a mark in a print and understand where it came from, how the artist's hand created it. By explaining each process, this book helps me understand the result of the process, and understand its effect on the finished product. Not everyone sees art that way, but it makes me feel somehow closer to the creator.

I recommend this to anyone who loves fine prints. Perhaps it's helpful to the printmaker looking for new techniques to try. It is certainly useful for the viewer, in understanding how the artist makes a vision come alive on paper.

I've Been Liberated! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a great primer on screen printing! It is kind of like "T-shirts for Fun & Profit"-lite. This book is particularly useful for the weekend warrior or part-time entrepreneur. The step-by-step examples are terrific and clearly explained. As soon as I paged through it I came up with some ideas.

That said, if you are looking for more detailed information, you should also pick-up How to Print T-Shirts for Fun and Profit. But get this one, too!

Editorial Review:

Print Liberation is a comprehensive DIY guide to screen printing for both novice crafters as well as experienced artists. The book begins by giving readers a brief history of screen-printing while outlining the basic principles of the process including the equipment and tools needed to get started. Step-by-step instructions accompanied by full-color photographs show readers the various methods for making great screen prints and tips on how to avoid screen-printing mistakes. Information about printing on various surfaces from wallpaper to t-shirts, cylinders and more gives readers a general understanding of the various applications for screen-printing and solid information on how to turn their screen prints into a personal art or business. Bonus sample images formatted for screen-printing are included for readers to use in their own screen prints.

The Dore's Illustrations for Dante's Commedia are great. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Illustrations from the 1st canto in the Inferno to the last of Paradiso are great because they help as a visual aid when reading the Divina Commedia. One can really see how and in which ways Dore, when he design the illustrations, followed the text very closely.

Absolutely Wonderful (Really 4 and a half stars) 4 out of 5 stars.

I have looked at a variety of Dante artists. Some well known and some are not. Suloni Robertson, John Flaxman, Willam Blake, Sandro Botticelli, Sandow Birk, Herb Roe. Do a google search to look at the works of some of these like Sandow Birk. There are some that are more obscure which in a way documents the Comedy, more specifically the Inferno. I'm not going to say who I don't like but Dore is the best. I am rather specific about artists. Dore makes the grade. He is good, really good and when you look at this book, you feel like you are in the terrible depths of hell. I like purgatorio too. I feel the religious prayer songs in my head as I see Beatrice's entrance. There is so much symbolism in these pictures, especially in Paradiso. Though I do disagree with the depiction of Muhammad in hell, the rest is fantastic. I mean that he looks more like he's British then Middle Eastern. I imagine him with blonde hair in the plate. The tortured look on Dante's face in the plate with Betrand de Born, (The cover pic) is extraordinary. I felt how he felt. That is why Dore is so good. I had also hoped for more detail with Ugolino because his story is fantastically horrifying.

The book is a must for any Dante fan. I look at it a lot, even if I have seen the pictures hundreds of times. I really don't think that you can get bored with this. There is always something new to look at. Some detail you looked over. Buy this book because the scans online don't give the justice that this book has. Buy it, look it over, get inspired by it. Maybe we will see your work on Amazon in the near future.

Editorial Review:

135 fantastic and grotesque scenes depict the passion and grandeur of one of Dante's most highly regarded works — from the depths of hell onto the mountain of purgatory and up to the empyrean realms of paradise. Includes plates produced for The Inferno, Purgatory and Paradise. Illustrations accompanied by appropriate lines from the Longfellow translation.

Editorial Review:

Utilizing the combined experience of three traditional artists turned digital imaging pioneers, Digital Art Studio champions combining traditional art techniques with digital media. From their unique position as artists, educators, and technology consultants, the authors provide a wide range of ways to integrate digital processes, using them in unusual and challenging ways to reinvent traditional art techniques. The computer is profiled as the ultimate mixed-media machine, allowing the artist to readily combine an unbelievable array of media. The book covers the basic processes for preparing commercially available surfaces (canvas and watercolor and printmaking papers) and custom surfaces (handmade papers, wood, leather, and antique fabrics). More advanced methods are covered, including transferring digital images to absorbent surfaces and transferring digital images to three-dimensional surfaces. A showcase of the work of artists who have combined digital and traditional materials to produce outstanding work will inspire all artists, new and seasoned alike, to explore the new world of mixing traditional art with digital media.

Great demonstation of incredible effects using monotype 5 out of 5 stars.
61 of 63 people found this review helpful.

There seems to be very limited information available on the technique of monotype. This book fills that void by demonstrating the incredible variety of effects possible using the monotype method. There are no projects, per se, rather it teaches techniques that help you create your own masterpieces. Many pieces of example artwork are found throughout the book.

A monotype is a one-of-a-kind print made by transferring a painted image to paper. The book starts out with an introduction to materials including plates, mediums, solvents, panting tools and paper as well as hand and press transfer equipment. It also covers studio safety and finding workshop facilities.

Techniques are next including working into a light or dark field and both hand and press transfer.
These include step-by-step instructions accompanied by demonstration photos. Working in specific mediums including watercolor, acrylics, water-soluble writing instruments, monoprint paints (Createx), oil paints, water-based oils and alkyds follows. A section discussing special oil-based printing inks for lithography, etching, printing and serigraphy is also here. There is even a chapter on special techniques including using masks & stencils, embossing and creating collages.

The final chapter gives an overview of monoprints, which combine monotype with other print making processes, and mixed-media monotypes. This includes intaglio, drypoint and engraving, as well as linocut and collagraphic monoprints.

There is a nice list of suppliers as well as interesting biographical notes on the artists featured in the back. This is a great book that displays the great diversity in mediums and results available with monotype.

Editorial Review:

The art of monotype has experienced a surge of popularity in recent years, and artists working in other mediums will enjoy exploring the creative potential this process offers them. A brief history of monotype is followed by a comprehensive chapter on materials. The step-by-step instructions are accompanied by some of the finest examples of monotype being done today.

Great introductory book 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I recently decided to take up screen printing and bought this book to help me learn the techniques. I've been very pleased with it so far. The instructions are simple to follow and explained well. There are also images illustrating most steps described in the text, useful for visual people. The author goes through the basics, such as choosing a suitable screen and paint and the equipment necessary, so it's easy to get started right away. The specific projects outlined in the book are fun and interesting, though perhaps best used as inspiration for your own designs. Best of all, the author describes several different ways to make prints, including some that don't involve any toxic chemicals.

This book might not be appropriate for advanced screen printers as I'm sure the information contained in it is pretty simplistic. However, it's great for someone like me who knew nothing about screenprinting before I bought this book. I've created some really great images following the instructions of the authors, and I couldn't be happier with the results.

Editorial Review:

From decorative paper bags to elegant home furnishings, the 26 attractive projects in this beginner’s manual will win converts to the simple, fabulous craft of screen printing. The entire printing process receives in-depth explanations and unfolds in numerous detailed photos. Find out how to select and mix inks, print a picture evenly, care for screens, and transform basic sketches into scale images for a design. Make a light exposure unit to create prints of drawings, photographs, and found objects. The fun begins when these techniques turn into projects, including a pretty hand-stamped pillow, a lovely embellished table runner, and a keepsake picture album that features a screen-printed family photo on its cover. Gallery-quality items pictured throughout provide extra inspiration.

• Spotlights "green" technology, safe for all artists • Distinguished author has worked with Andy Warhol, Red Grooms, Romare Bearden, and other top artists • Techniques range from the traditional hands-on to the latest in digital screenprinting

For many years, screenprinting was oil-based—and presented significant health risks even as it damaged the environment. Today, fortunately, screenprinting has shifted to water-based technologies. Now Roni Henning, a leading expert on screenprinting, offers her tips and techniques for getting the most out of these safer, "greener" water-based methods ranging from the traditional hands-on methods to the latest digital technology. She explains separations and color correcting, then discusses the artist-printmaker collaboration, giving intriguing examples from her own work with such luminaries as Andy Warhol, Red Grooms, and Romare Bearden. Henning also offers step-by-step instructions for monoprinting, her own direct-to-screen watercolor process. Illustrated with glowing examples of the printmaking medium, including works by Bearden, Jack Youngerman, Gene Davis, and Elizabeth Osbourne, this is the definitive work on an increasingly popular art.
