Don't miss the sheriff! 4 out of 5 stars.

Anne Gracie has written a sparkling story that had me laughing so hard I actually slapped my knee -- at several points in the book! -- and reaching for the Kleenex at the end. Her heroine is a surprising character who pulls the unexpected at least a half-dozen times. I loved her unique attitude and the fact that she was portrayed as intelligent and professional. How often do you find that in any book any more? I just SO enjoyed this story and the great sparks between hero and heroine. You're going on my list of authors to watch for, Ms. Gracie!

Yes, I was captivated by this second novel -- after nearly putting the book down permanently halfway through the "Kiss that Cowboy!" story. Unfortunately, the heroine here is inept at everything except looking good in tight jeans and in bed. The hero is ept at everything she lacks, as well as looking good in jeans, etc., AND running a huge ranch all by himself, no sweat. The heroine's reason for being in Texas is not a convincing one, and the plot goes from cliche to cliche, winding up at the inevitable baby epilogue. The text for the entire thing is written in a telegraphed, short-sentence style (many times just one telegraphed sentence makes an entire paragraph) that was extremely difficult to read. In the future I'd like to ask the author to work on developing a pleasing rhythm for her words and to reach for the unexpected with both characters and plot.

I don't like cowboys. Why did I pick this book up in the first place? Because it DIDN'T have a cartoon depicting the glory of anorexia on the cover as had been done on several Duets covers of the recent past, and I wanted to support such a move. Hurrah, Harlequin! Maybe you're getting the message after all. (But I'm so glad I got the book because of Gracie's tale!)

THE CINDERELLA SOLUTION:

Have you ever wanted a complete makeover, where the `after' pictures belong in a glossy magazine? Charlotte Taylor, tomboy extrordinnaire, had no such aspirations. Comfortable with her life, she was always ready for a football game and hanging out with the guys, especially with best friend Gabe Donofrio. But Gabe sees her as "one of the guys" and not as the kind of woman who could garner a marriage proposal within a month. Charlotte, never one to resist a bet, starts the makeover and is already planning on how to spend Gabe's thousand dollars.

Even though the bet was his idea, Gabe is already resenting it. Since Charlotte has started her makeover agenda, her dating life has perked up, leaving little time for him. When Charlotte starts dating Jack Landor, the most eligible man in America, Gabe is more than ready to call off the bet. And to top it all off, Charlotte is looking better and better to Gabe's eyes, leaving him with the question of what to do when you're attracted to your best friend?

Yardley provides her readers with memorable characters and an uncomplicated, yet endearing, story. Charlotte and Gabe are struggling to either remain as platonic best friends or to step the relationship up to the next level of intimacy. A sweet story and a fast read, THE CINDERELLA STORY will touch your heart and leave you with a smile on your face.

SAY YES:

Lori Foster delights her readers with SAY YES, a modern twist upon the old saying "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" After finding her fiance in her bed with her neighbor's ex-girlfriend, Sara Simmons decides love and marriage isn't for her. But a girl can have a wild fling, right? And who better to choose than her sexy next-door neighbor, Gavin Blake?

But Gavin's looking for more than sex, he wants a full-fledged relationship with Sara. Since the first day they met, in the house Gavin was finishing and Sara fell in love with, to the day he finds a `for sale' sign in front of the same house, Gavin has known that Sara is a special lady. Now he just needs to find a way to convince her that she can have her fling and her man, for keeps. So Gavin fabricates a reason to move in with Sara, not expecting to find her underwear in the kitchen drawers (the only drawers in the house) or the growing menagerie of orphaned animals, including a depressed dog and the cat from hell.

Foster's unique style of red-hot stories blends seamlessly with the humorous qualities of SAY YES. The conflict is honest as Sarah struggles to resolve her desire for a family and her need to protect herself emotionally.

SAY YES is definitely a page-turner that will keep you involved from the beginning. Foster enchants readers with this sexy and romantic romp, a worthy contribution to the fun-filled Harlequin Duets line.

One Bride Too Many--Jennifer Drew

Cole Bailey needs a bride in order to secure the family business. Tess Morgan is an old friend. She's a girl...surely she can fix him up with some of her friends. But as Cole dates one woman after another, looking for that perfect someone, he finds none of them can even begin to compare to Tess. What are the odds that Tess will see him as more than a chum...what are the odds he can make her love him and see that she's the only woman he needs, and anyone else would simply be One Bride Too Many?

One Groom To Go--Jennifer Drew

When Megan Danbury orders Zack Bailey to strip, she didn't mean his clothes, she meant the paint from the cabinet. Her show is called Do It Herself, not Watch-the-big-Strapping-Man-Do-It, but watching Zack, with or without his shirt, seems to be appealing to her demographics (any female between 1 and 100). As a matter of fact, watching Zack appeals to Megan, too. Sparks fly on the set and between the sheets as Megan orders One Groom to Go, please!

Jennifer Drew pens two light-hearted romps down the matrimonial aisle--fast, fun stories guarenteed to leave a smile on the reader's face!

GOING IN STYLE--Bonnie Tucker

Suzanne Mercer only has a month to live...at least that's what she thinks. So what's a girl to do? If she's logic-loving Suzie, she's going to make her plans and go after her one heart's desire, namely Griffin Scott, her sexy, next-door neighbor and best friend. This is where the fun starts. Orderly Suzy prepares for the seduction and...well, things don't go as planned. Even her death doesn't go as planned. And Suzie's untimely survival will keep the reader laughing in this laugh-a-minute story of true love. Once again, Bonnie Tucker shines!

I LOVE LACY--Lori Wilde

Lacy Calder believes in one true, predestined love. And when hers walks into her hospital, Lucy's got six weeks to convince him he can't live without her, because she knows she can't live without him. And with her "helpful" family and Frank Sinatra (a fainting goat) by her side, she just might stand a chance of convincing Bennett Sheridan that he loves Lacy! Lori Wilde gives readers a "wild" ride they won't forget!

Darn Near Perfect is wonderfully real and romantic! 5 out of 5 stars.

Casey Richards had no intention of falling for the corporate shark who'd been forced by his boss to volunteer at the senior center she directed. Michael Parker was married to his job, just like her father. Dear old Dad had never been there when she needed him. Michael wouldn't be either; she knew that. Still, his sexy grin and sharp mind--not to mention those killer blue eyes--got to her. But when faced with a choice, Casey feared Michael would choose his job over her.

This really spoke to me, as many people in today's world struggle with these very issues. Liz Jarrett deals with work-home balance beautifully, as well as uses her humor to tell a sweet, often touching story. The cast of supporting characters are a hoot too. And then there's the magic car! This is one you won't want to miss!

Perfectly Romantic 5 out of 5 stars.

How many of us struggle with work versus personal life? Well, Casey Richards is doing just that. In her job as a Senior Citizen Center Director, she struggles to raise funding for the center's new, much needed building. Help comes in the form of Michael Parker, a corporate shark forced by his boss to volunteer. Casey and Michael lock horns immediately, but, as opposites often do, they also attract. Casey tries to guard her heart, but soon finds herself falling in love with a man exactly like her "work comes first" father. Michael, too, attempts to resist, but Casey's strength of character and devotion to her cause is irresistible. Can he have her and his ambitions? Only time--and Casey--will tell.

I loved this book. It's chock full of warmth and delightful humor. A Darn Near Perfect combination of laughter and romance.

wild, weird, and wacky 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

THE FAMILY FEUD by Carol Finch. In Oz, Oklahoma Jan Mitchell is frustrated with her parents separating after three plus decades of marriage. Her dad wants to go touring while her mom wants her dress shop to succeed. Hardware storeowner Morgan Price tries to help Jan negotiate a compromise and peace settlement between her parents even as he has his own personal agenda to marry Jan. Carol Finch provides an amusing tale of discordant relationships that will keep the audience laughing especially with mom's theory of the male's spot in nature's food chain.

STOP THE WEDDING! by Jennifer Drew. The hunt for her wedding dress has so far proven futile for Stacy Moore. In her fifth store, two thugs kidnap Stacy. Nick Franklin, accompanying his mother on her wedding dress quest, tries to intercede, but is knocked out with a six-pack. Stacy and Nick need to work as a team if they are to escape from their kidnappers. As they flee, Stacy and Nick fall in love. Jennifer Drew combines a very humorous romantic romp that is almost short of impossible into a wonderful satirical tale that keeps the reader amused with the antics of the cast.

These two irrelevant stories are what Duets is all about: wild, weird, and wacky, but wonderfully warm and witty.
