A fast and engaging read 5 out of 5 stars.

Hessler writes candidly about his experiences in China as if he were writing to a friend back home. His accounts of conversations between himself and the locals are priceless, both funny and sad. This book really brings to light the hardships of Chinese farmers and their children, who seek to escape their rural lives by getting an education and joining the Communist Party.

Hessler's self-deprecating tone and funny anecdotes about his cultural mishaps make this book entertaining and touching. I strongly recommend it for anyone who wants to visit China or is interested in learning more about what makes this complex society tick.

Editorial Review:

When Peter Hessler went to China in the late 1990s, he expected to spend a couple of peaceful years teaching English in the town of Fuling on the Yangtze River. But what he experienced - the natural beauty, cultural tension, and complex process of understanding that takes place when one is thrust into a radically different society - surpassed anything he could have imagined. Hessler observes firsthand how major events such as the death of Deng Xiaoping, the return of Hong Kong to the mainland, and the controversial consturction of the Three Gorges Dam have affected even the people of a remote town like Fuling. Poignant, thoughtful and utterly compelling, "River Town" is an unforgettable portrait of a place caught mid-river in time, much like China itself - a country seeking to understand both what it was and what it will one day become.

Editorial Review:

Two weeks after September 11th, award-winning journalist Asne Seierstad went to Afghanistan to report on the conflict. In the following spring she returned to live with a bookseller and his family for several months. The Bookseller of Kabul is the fascinating account of her time spent living with the family of thirteen in their four-roomed home. Bookseller Sultan Khan defied the authorities for twenty years to supply books to the people of Kabul. He was arrested, interrogated and imprisoned by the communists and watched illiterate Taliban soldiers burn piles of his books in the street. He even resorted to hiding most of his stock in attics all over Kabul. But while Khan is passionate in his love of books and hatred of censorship, he is also a committed Muslim with strict views on family life. As an outsider, Seierstad is able to move between the private world of the women - including Khan's two wives - and the more public lives of the men. The result is an intimate and fascinating portrait of a family which also offers a unique perspective on a troubled country.

Thick book... tiny content 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I did read all these great reviews and finally decided to buy this book.
To summarize - its rather disappointing.
Lighting? Not so great on it. Retouching? Beauty retouching technique (yes, no plurals) is pretty much "blur + brush".. With some texture to throw in. Sharpening technique (yes. No plurals again) - well.. not a lot of use - could be better done with LAB space. Most of colour discussion is about RGB space. Excuse me, what happened to CMYK and Lab? Bits about calibration - yes, nice, but not a lot of details. Its almost like someone thought up an idea for book, wrote few chapters then got sick of it, and started to throw in random thoughts and ideas just to fill up space.

I woulnt recommend this book to anyone who ever read Welcome To Oz! or any other decent book on photoshop.

09 wall calendar 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Fine for a very large size wall calendar. Make sure you have the space to accomodate the size of this item.

Editorial Review:

With over one million copies sold, the Out on the Porch calendar is a celebration of the good life. Of ice-cold lemonade on hot summer afternoons. Of the rhythmic thump-thump-thump of a beloved rocker. Of beautiful views and pure, put-up-your feet relaxation. For 2009, kick back on a dozen fantastic porches, porticoes, and verandas (in your imagination, at least). A charmingly rustic terrace in New York's Hudson Valley. A Bahamian porch swathed in green, pink, and yellow. And a sweeping Maine veranda with gorgeous ocean views. Photographs are accompanied by porch quotes from literature, and you can share the tranquility using the twelve full-color postcards included.

Very informative 5 out of 5 stars.

I've read this book from cover to cover. I love it. As a beginning photographer, this book was very helpful. Not a lot of technical info. Just enough guidance to get me going on my own.

Children Photo Tips 5 out of 5 stars.

The book was exactly what I was looking for. Help with the how to on the technical side, but was helpful on setting up shots. Looking around my house and seeing how the book would "shoot it" then applying it with my DSLR. Composition and Lighting was extremly helpful to me. This book was well worth my investment.

Editorial Review:

When Joe's not on assignment for the biggest-name magazines and Fortune 500 clients, he's in the classroom teaching location lighting, environmental portraiture, and how to get the shot at workshops around the world. These on-location workshops are usually reserved for a handful of photographers each year, but now you can learn the same techniques that Joe shares in his seminars and lectures in a book that brings Joe's sessions to life. In this book, Joe delivers the definitive guide to flash. He starts with the basics and how to get started and then moves on to techniques for using really simple approaches (one light, two light). The book contains a discussion of what's in the camera bag lighting wise, gadgets, field survival, light shaping tools, approaches, and more. All along the way he imparts his photography wisdom and gets the reader to move on past their fears, showing them examples of disasters and how to recover. Each section contains straight talk and a run-down of what can happen on location.

A veteren film editor shares his life 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Rosenblum edited feature films from the late 50s until early 80s, and is most noted for his collaborative efforts with Woody Allen in the 1970s. But his most interesting stories in the book are from a decade earlier when he was still experimenting. Though, I have only seen about half of the movies Rosenblum writes of, it makes the stories no less fascinating.

Rosenblum's major accomplishment in the book is to shed light on the importance of the film editor in motion pictures. He's not wrong in stating that their efforts have been largely ignored by critics and the public at large. What's interesting is that the editor as an influence in film is rarely even discussed by film critics and historians. It's probably because people are largely unsure of what an editor's true contributions are to any one motion picture.

Through the course of the book, Rosenblum takes apart THE RAID ON MINSKY'S, THE PAWNBROKER, and ANNIE HALL in depth. He also gives examples of how much an initial cut of a film can differ from the final cut.

I found the book quite informative, and learned more about film editing than I had expected.

Editorial Review:

The story of one of the most important and least-understood jobs in moviemaking—film editing—is here told by one of the wizards, Ralph Rosenblum, whose credentials include six Woody Allen films, as well as The Pawnbroker, The Producers, and Goodbye, Columbus. Rosenblum and journalist Robert Karen have written both a history of the profession and a personal account, a highly entertaining, instructive, and revelatory book that will make any reader a more aware movie-viewer.
