Very helpful! 4 out of 5 stars.

This book has a wealth of information for the inexperienced and beginner, film editer, or anyone who is looking for a good book on the subject. I have found it to be very helpful, as I am still learning how to do professional editing!

Editorial Review:

In the Blink of an Eye is celebrated film editor Walter Murch's vivid, multifaceted, thought-provoking essay on film editing. Starting with what might be the most basic editing question - Why do cuts work? - Murch treats the reader to a wonderful ride through the aesthetics and practical concerns of cutting film. Along the way, he offers his unique insights on such subjects as continuity and discontinuity in editing, dreaming, and reality; criteria for a good cut; the blink of the eye as an emotional cue; digital editing; and much more. In this second edition, Murch reconsiders and completely revises his popular first edition's lengthy meditation on digital editing (which accounts for a third of the book's pages) in light of the technological changes that have taken place in the six years since its publication.

Not good for serious sculptors 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book to use as a reference for sculpting faces on dolls. The book shows different angles of the expressions and that was what I needed. Unfortunately what I did not need was an entire book filled with goofy expressions that you'd never even see on a human face!! There was no romantic expressions or serene, contented, laughing mildly at something mildly funny expressions. Just over the top, completely over exaggerated mutated faces! If you need some serious or normal faces, Don't buy this book.

Editorial Review:

All artists are tired of persuading their nearest and dearest to look sad...look glad...look mad...madder...no, even madder...okay, hold it. For those artists (and their long-suffering friends), here is the best book ever. FACIAL EXPRESSIONS includes more than 3,500 photographs of fifty faces, men and women of a variety of ages, shapes, sizes, and ethnicities, each demonstrating a wide range of emotions and shown from multiple angles. Who can use this book? Oh, only every artist on the planet, including art students, illustrators, fine artists, animators, story boarders, and comic-book artists. But wait, there's more! Additional photos focus on people wearing hats and couples kissing. while illustrations show skull anatomy and facial musculature. Still not enough? How about a one-of-a-kind series of photos of lips pronouncing the phonemes used in human speech? Animators will swoon--and artists will show a range of facial expressions from happy to happiest to ecstatic.

Through the Lens: National Geographic's Greatest Photographs 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

We were highly disappointed in this book. The photos were grainy and certainly not National Geographics greatest! We have seen absolutely stunning shots from them in the past and not one was included in this book. It was a great disappointment.

Fast shipping, great book! 3 out of 5 stars.

Fast shipping, love the book, but the front cover was tattered on the edges. Thanks!

Great to see pro hotos 5 out of 5 stars.

I am an aspiring photographer. I was actually in the book store the other day just browsing and I picked up this book as well as the other 2 in this series (which are on there way). I was very impressed so I came home and got on Amazon. I got mine used (in great shape) for 10 bucks shipped...How can you go wrong there.

The reason I purchased this book is because I think it is really good to see what has made it to print and to get a feel for what a huge magazine deems good for print in it's pages...that alone is worth studying and again 10 bucks shipped, is a killer deal!!!!!! Also another great thing about this book is that it has photos from 80 years ago and for those photographers wanting to gain that feel in their photos, it offers a great place to reference to see how it was done in print (not on some tute from the internet).

Another great aspect to this is that if you ever entertain and have this on the coffee table it is great for guests, creates conversation and also makes you look very well versed! ;-)

Editorial Review:

National Geographic's biggest and most sumptuous photography book ever--a celebration of more than a century of collecting and publishing photographs, with remarkable images from around the world. 150,000 first printing. 10-city author tour.

Editorial Review:

"My greatest aim has been to advance the art of photography and to make it what I think I have, a great and truthful medium of history."—Mathew Brady

Mathew Brady and his ground breaking team of assistants risked life and liberty to capture up-close images of the fury of the American Civil War and its aftermath. Brady actually got so close to the action during the First Battle of Bull Run that he only narrowly avoided capture. Brady's Civil War Journal chronicles the events of the war by showcasing a selection of Brady's moving, one-of-a-kind images and describing each in terms of its significance. The text by Theodore P. Savas, authoritative expert on the Civil War, adds context to Brady's memorable photographs, creating an unrivaled visual account of the most costly conflict in American history as it unfolded. 150 b/w photographs.

I looked at other D60 guides, but chose this one. It is very well laid out. David puts everything in an easy to understand context. If there is a particular setting that I am looking for, I can simply turn right to it without flipping through the whole book. This book is great for experienced and beginners with DSLR cameras. If you have a D60, you need this book. Thanks for a great book.

THE Best! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because it had the word "Rivet" in its title and I want to know more about the use of rivets. While I didn't learn much about rivets from this book I quickly fell in love with the projects, instructions, and fabulous examples of work by other artists. I've created six pieces from the projects in 2 days and they are so easy and gratifying. You can take the projects and let your imagination run wild to create your own unique and very special jewelry. Absolutely my favorite jewelry technique book and I have a LOT in my library. If you are interested in creating pieces that truly qualify as wearable art (versus the safe same old same old) this book is a must for both instruction and inspiration!

Editorial Review:

Making gorgeous handcrafted jewelry can be an amazingly simple process that even beginners will quickly master—as long as they have this guide by their side. Written by an experienced artist and teacher, and generously illustrated with attractive how-to photos and drawings, it demonstrates a wealth of easy techniques in superb detail. Twenty dazzling projects—including a twisted wire choker, bangle bracelet, bead pod pin, and mixed metal earrings— are created by wrapping, stitching, and folding metal, and by making cold connections with basic screws, bolts, pop rivets, eyelets, brads, and nails. Sophisticated photographs of each piece highlight its rich textures and visual complexity. Would-be jewelers will love this—and beaders, memory crafters, and anyone eager to explore metal jewelry will want it, too!

Eastern Steinheimer? 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Having a copy of 'a passion for trains' by the same author, i had no hesitation in buying another one of Jeff Brouws books. I wasnt at all disapointed as the content and reproduction are of the same high standard.
It was also refreshing to have an 'eastern' vision of what i would call North Americas finest railroading period, that of late steam to early diesel. Mr Shaughnessy shows that his work is up there with the very best of the American artists (as thats what they are) when it comes to composition, balance, lighting and human interest. He has also mastered the difficult craft of night lighting and shows the magic of the B&W medium to the maximum. Buy this book (along with 'a passion for trains). You will cherish them. And to Mr Brouws - Great job, i eagerly await books on Kistler, and Kindig, before too long.

Editorial Review:

Jim Shaughnessy is a revered name among railway photographers. This collection, the best of his work over a forty-year career, features photographs taken between 1946 and 1988, with an emphasis on the American railroad culture of the fifties and sixties. Jeff Brouws - a railway authority and photo historian - has contributed a biographical essay that traces Shaughnessy's beginnings photographing steam locomotives in Troy, New York, to his documentation of the dramatic steam-to-diesel transition, with an emphasis on the northeastern United States and Canada, where the concentration of railway action and often deep snow resulted in beautiful and unusual images. Not just a compendium of photographs of locomotives, this book covers the whole railroad world - the sheds, tunnels, viaducts, station yards and more. It is a wonderful document of what is arguably railroading's most compelling era.
