Being an avid motorcyclist, adventurer and non-fiction reader, I was excited to pick this book up when I saw it. Tried to get thru it several times, but it was just uncompelling. Very little about the actual bikes other than that they were BMW's. Having an entourage of trucks and cameras following them... What kind of adventure is that? ANYWAYS I never did get thru it although it was a good aid to falling asleep at night - 5 or 6 pages and I was out like a light.

Editorial Review:

After their fantastic trip round the world in 2004, fellow actors and bike fanatics Ewan Mc Gregor and Charley Boorman couldn't shake the travel bug. And after an inspirational UNICEF visit to Africa, they knew they had to go back and experience this extraordinary continent in more depth. And so they set off on their 15,000-mile adventure, experiencing some of the toughest terrain in the world - and meeting some of the friendliest people. Containing over one hundred exclusive photographs - including some taken by Ewan and Charley, and many more by internationally renowned photographer Julian Broad - this beautifully illustrated edition vividly documents a trip of a lifetime.

The FIRST BOOK YOU SHOULD READ! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I got into photography about 3 years ago (digital) and read through about 2 dozen glossy "authoritative" books. None of which could explain the basics to relate ISO/fStop/Speed in a way that didn't assume you already knew what they were.

Most of the book relates to Large Format which may at first seem a bit off-putting to a novice, but after a few pages you'll see how it doesn't matter whether you're using an 8x10 antique or a digital point and shoot. The way they work is the same.

Ansel does an EXCELLENT job explaining the mechanics of light and photography while assuming the reader has some intelligence, makes it very accessible to everyone.

Get this book. Recommend it to all your photography friends. Get the next book "The Negative". You won't need to buy any other books. period.

Editorial Review:

This is an atrractively priced photography c lassic made accessible to a wider, new audience. It covers e verything from "seeing" the finished photo in advance, to le ns choices. It is illustrated with many of Ansel Adams most famous images. '

Editorial Review:

I Live Here is a paper documentary–an intimate journey to humanitarian crises in four corners of the world: war in Chechnya, ethnic cleansing in Burma, globalization in Mexico, and AIDS in Malawi.

~THE BOOK~

I Live Here is a visually stunning narrative — told through journals, stories, images, and graphic novellas — in which the lives of refugees and displaced people become at once personal and global. Bearing witness to stories that are too often overlooked, it is a raw and intimate journey to crises in four corners of the world: war in Chechnya, ethnic cleansing in Burma, globalization in Mexico, and AIDS in Malawi.

The voices we encounter are those of displaced women and children, in their own words or in stories told in text and images by noted writers and artists. The stories unfold in an avalanche: An orphan goes to jail for stealing leftovers. A teenage girl falls in love in a city of disappeared women. A child soldier escapes his army only to be saved by the people he was taught to kill.

Mia Kirshner’s journals guide us through a unique paper documentary brought vividly to life in collaboration with J.B. MacKinnon, Paul Shoebridge, and Michael Simons, with featured works by Joe Sacco, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Phoebe Gloeckner, Chris Abani, Karen Connelly, Kamel Khelif, and many others.

~THE JOURNEYS ~

Ingushetia
The border of the Russian republic of Ingushetia is not even fifty miles from Grozny, the capital city of Chechnya. Today, some 15,000 Chechen refugees live in Ingushetia. Mia Kirshner and Joe Sacco traveled here together, returning with first-person accounts, video, photographs, and other materials gathered in Nazran and Moscow. The chapter includes journals by Mia Kirshner, the story of a young refugee as told by J.B. MacKinnon, the story of a young piano virtuoso as told by Ann-Marie Macdonald, and a graphic novella of Chechen refugees by Joe Sacco.

Burma
Ethnic cleansing by the Burmese military has displaced an estimated 500,000 to 1 million people; over 100,000 live in refugee camps along the Thailand-Burma border. Burma is also believed to be home to more child soldiers than any other country in the world. Mia Kirshner and Michael Simons took separate trips to the region; this chapter is based on their interviews, photos, and video, as well as writing by sex workers and Karen refugees. It includes journals by Mia Kirshner, as well as work by Chris Abani, Karen Connelly, J.B. Mackinnon, and a graphic novella by Kamel Khélif.

Juárez
Ciudad Juárez is a large industrial border city in Mexico across the Rio Grande from El Paso, Texas. Since 1993, young women, many of them employees of Juárez’s more than three hundred maquiladoras, or global trade zone factories, have been disappearing from the streets. Mia Kirshner and Phoebe Gloeckner made independent journeys to this region; this book is informed by the stories and images they brought home. It includes journals, a story of one of the victims by Lauren Kirshner, and a graphic novella by Phoebe Gloeckner.

Malawi
Malawi is one of the world’s poorest countries, and has an AIDS rate close to twenty percent. The disease touches every aspect of daily life in the African nation, introducing immense chaos, particularly in the case of orphan children. Mia Kirshner and J.B. MacKinnon made the trip to Malawi and returned with interviews, photographs, writing, and artworks. This book includes journals, a children’s story by J.B. MacKinnon with art by Julie Morstad, and the stories and artwork of boys in a local prison.

learn the zone system 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Ansel Adams was a master of photography but not the most exciting storyteller , in my opinion.

This book is one that you should read as part of a complete education in photography, but there are some long sections in it. The parts of the book explaining Adams' zone system are very worthwhile and great stuff. Much of the rest of the book is only interesting if you are shooting film (not digital), as it deals specifically with darkroom processing.

Read about the zone system here or somewhere else, but learn it. If you are a film photog, read this whole book. For digital shooters, you might want to read only the sections of interest.

An excellent technical reference 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Concisely written in Adams' own scholarly style, "The Negative" is a valuable resource for photographers learning the foundation of technically correct (as opposed to generally good) base exposure in a variety of scenes, both pedestrian and those that are more conflicting. One must, however, consider that more than 4 decades have passed since the techniques were founded and the technology described can be viewed, in many cases, with a quaint tug at nostalgia. Today's evaluative and matrix metering systems, programmed along the Zone System, do a remarkable job where once exposure was tedious and error prone, and this is where learning the Zone System to competently handle difficult scenes is a useful addition to a photographer's "book of tricks". But despite the clarity of explanation and steps, Adams' Zone System remains a complex, intertwining system to understand (theory) and apply (field application); it never was and never will be a five-minute task. For B&W fine art photographers, "The Negative" holds a timeless reference quality with many techniques remaining the solid benchmarks for fine art production. In summary, a tremendously good read and a most valuable addition to any learned photographer's library.

The Negative (Ansel Adams Photography, Book 2)

Editorial Review:

The early chapters are devoted to a discussi on of light, film and exposure. What follows is a detailed d iscussion of the zone system, chapters on natural and artifi cial light and at the end is an extensive chapter on the dar kroom and its equipment. '

Less helpful than owner's manual 2 out of 5 stars.
12 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book based on the reviews of the author's "field guide" on the XTi, which were quite positive, with only a few critics. Usually, that's enough to steer me away if there's another choice, but I thought since there were so many positive reviews, the book must be pretty good. I was very disappointed, however, and I agree with the analysis of those critics of the XTi book.

If you're looking for a version of the owner's manual that's larger and in full color, you might be happy with this "field guide", but if you're looking for something to help you take advantage of what the XSi can do (i.e. tips and techniques), you'll be disappointed too. It was actually less helpful to me than the owner's manual was. For example, I'm new to SLRs (as most of the audience for this book should be), and I didn't know very much about the 4 metering modes that this camera offers. Both the owner's manual and this book describe what they do, but only the owner's manual gives a recommendation (spot metering and center-weighted average are labeled "for advanced users"). Perhaps Lowrie wouldn't agree with that, but at least it's something besides the nuts & bolts.

I can't imagine how Lowrie went about taking up so much space without saying something valuable, or even subjective, about this camera. Perhaps it was all the "full color photos". I also can't imagine ever bringing this "field guide" into "the field". I'd much sooner stick the owner's guide in my back pocket. I found Lowrie's blog much more informative and useful than this book.

Editorial Review:

Your Digital Rebel XSi/450D, with its 12.2 megapixel resolution, 3-inch view screen, and the option for "Live View" shooting, is designed for simplicity without sacrificing creative freedom. This guide is ideal for helping you use that creative control and get great shots anywhere, anytime. If you’re new to dSLRs, it makes the transition easy. If you’re already comfortable with the various modes and settings, the book helps you make the most of every one.
  • Set up your camera and learn when to choose automatic, semi-automatic, and manual modes
  • Understand the camera's controls, menus, and when to use different metering and autofocus modes
  • Explore Canon Picture Styles and custom functions
  • Learn to manipulate ISO, exposure, depth of field, and shutter speed
  • Create intriguing night and low-light images, capture sports action, portraits, and get tips for better macro photography

NOT THE GREAT COFFEE TABLE BOOK! 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 32 people found this review helpful.

NOT 500 pages and if I had paused to read the item description properly I wouldn't have bought this book! Way too good a price to be true, it is not another edition of the wonderful Cousteau-forwarded book, but a perfectly respectable DK full-color children's book with many very nice color photos. Probably very worth $7.99 and I was just far too greedy to read the fine print.

Editorial Review:

From the geological and physical processes that affect the ocean floor to the key habitat zones, flora, and fauna, this is the definitive reference to the world's oceans for the entire family. Includes an introduction by Fabien Cousteau. Includes the latest developments in ocean exploration and photography. Catalogs the rich diversity of ocean features and marine life. Highlights important people, unique habitats, human impact studies, and extreme facts. Published in association with the American Museum of Natural History.

Editorial Review:

In this first paperback edition of his enormously successful Time, internationally acclaimed artist Andy Goldsworthy presents a wealth of work that uses time itself as a medium: on a Scottish hillside a huge rectangle of compacted snow becomes ever more visible as the surrounding snowfall melts away; clay walls dry out and crack, revealing new forms embedded within them; a sculpture of re-formed icicles catches the morning sunshine. This spectacular collection of color photographs celebrates the many ways in which Goldsworthy’s art evokes the passage of time.

Presenting key works along with revealing excerpts from Goldsworthy’s working diaries, this perceptive overview—which includes an extensive illustrated chronology by Terry Friedman—is a necessity for anyone who loves Goldsworthy’s art.
