Editorial Review:

A visual odyssey that will change the way we see our planet, this remarkable book, companion to the acclaimed Discovery Channel/ BBC series, is an enduring and awe-inspiring record of one of the most ambitious natural history projects ever undertaken. Using the latest aerial surveillance, state-of-the-art cameras, and high definition technology, the creators of Planet Earth have assembled more than 400 stunning photographs of wondrous natural landscapes from around the globe, including incredible footage of the rarely spotted, almost mythical creatures that live in these habitats. Many of the images reveal inaccessible places that few have seen and record animal behavior that has never been filmed or photographed before. With the help of this highly advanced technology and the world's premier wildlife photographers, the book takes us on a spectacular journey from the world's greatest rivers and impressive gorges, to its mightiest mountains, hidden caves and caverns, and vast deserts. Planet Earth captures breathtaking sequences of predators and their prey, lush vistas of forests viewed from the tops of towering trees, the oceans and their mysterious creatures viewed from beneath the surface, and much more--in a magnificent adventure that brings unknown wonders of the natural world into our living rooms.

French Country Diary - Calendar 5 out of 5 stars.

I absolutely love this beautiful, well-designed calendar. Also, Amazon does a great job!

Lovely gift 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I've been giving the French Country Diary to my mother (now my mother-in-law) every year for at least the last 15 years! They both love it for their weekly planners. This is a beautiful hard-bound book with magnificent photographs of the countryside.

Editorial Review:

The elegant and ever-alluring French Country Diary, now in its twentieth year, is the gift of France—a sumptuous escape to its romance and timeless beauty. Market stalls piled high with fresh produce. Stone farmhouses with brightly painted shutters. Undulating landscapes of brilliant yellow colza and purple lavender, rustic country kitchens and sun-dappled courtyards, vines dripping from trellises, and dreamy blue Mediterranean views. Distinctive Provençal fabrics embellish the cover, gift box, and pages of the calendar.

Life is better when you have a direction to go in 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I got this book for my daughter who is a natural when it comes to photography. It is a hobby she just seems to have an "eye" for. It came to my address and I took a look at the book just to make sure it was what i thought it was and was 'right' for her. It got ME excited, and I havent taken pictures in years though my eyes and mind never stop thinking about what a great picture some of the things I see around me might make. I cannot claim whether or not this book is ALL inclusive, but it was very clear that it was pretty darn close enough. I think any one can have a great talent, but like a person dropped in the middle of a large lake....it is so much better when you have a direction to go in. Why swim in circles? Take the pictures you want but know at the same time what you might DO with them and where you might sell them. You'll be able to enjoy a hobby fully and at the same time possibly make or supplement a lifestyle or living.
good luck to all the photographers out there

Paris of my dreams 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A charming book that will lead you to places known to seasoned and local Parisians. Not the run of the mill tourist spots. You will become part of "secret Paris".

Dull 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 7 people found this review helpful.

To say that this is a little dull is an understatement . the quiet corners are DEAD .

Just my style 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 2 people found this review helpful.

These are the kind of experiences I seek on every vacation. But I only have a week in Paris so thank you so much for doing the "leg work" for me.

Editorial Review:

More than eighty of the loveliest, most tranquil, and sometimes hidden places in Paris are celebrated in this charming guidebook

Quiet Corners of Paris is a beautifully illustrated peek into eighty-one often overlooked, always beautiful, locales: hidden villas, winding lanes, little-known 19th-century passages, serene gardens, and cobblestone courtyards. Some of the places have breathtaking views, others are filled with historic and architectural details, from stone archways, garden follies, boxwood mazes, ornamental statuary, stained glass, and Renaissance fountains. Follow a stone path under a trellis of blossoms or wander through a gate to discoverÉ

Binding Spoils the Book 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Of course this is a stunning collection of photographs. However, this edition as opposed to the large format edition is bound, literally, to disappoint. The binding method has lead to a large slice of each photograph being obsured. In some instances that means that it is not much use having included the photographs at all. The larger "full size" edition does not suffer from the same problem. I bought this book through Amazon but if I had seen it in a bookstore I would not have bought it because of the fact that the binding lets down the whole concept.

1953 to 2007 month by month 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I was to young to take an interest in girls when Playboy started publishing. By the late 50s, I had an avid interest in Playboy but prudence required caution. Miscellaneous copies were a teenager's access to the centerfolds. I followed Playboy through the 60s and early 70s and always checked the centerfold first. Older, married with children I stopped following each issue and in time, lost track of Playboy's centerfolds. However, the Playboy centerfold is always part of my life. Depending on the centerfold, I am in High School, Viet Nam or a number of other places. They provide an instant mnemonic that recalls a flood of memories. Most men have the same reaction, the difference being when they started and ended checking out the centerfold.
The Playboy Centerfold has always been a "looker"! Even the one you consider a poor choice is a knockout by any reasonable standard. What is "looker" a in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond has changed. This book is a history of beauty and sexuality from the 1953 to 2007. Over fifty years of centerfolds allows you to follow the changes in hair, makeup and physical appearance. In addition, you can see how the definition of allowable nudity changed during this time. While Playboy was always on the leading edge, they never got to far ahead of public decency. That fact means that Playboy moved with America's majority on nudity.
This is a well-done book. Every centerfold from Marylyn Monroe in the 1953 unnumbered issue to December 2007 is present. This is the centerfolds, without the staples or folds. The introduction and other observations are nice and do not distract in any way. What you are buying is a photo of over 600 of the best-looking women, naked and a history of America's concept of beauty.

Editorial Review:

Following the success of last year's limited deluxe edition, this new compact edition features every centerfold from every issue of "Playboy." The chronological collection provides an unparalleled view of the evolving appreciation of the female form. Full-color photos throughout.

Editorial Review:

ANSEL ADAMS: 400 PHOTOGRAPHS presents the full spectrum Adams' greatest work in a single volume for the first time, offering an entirely new perspective on his monumental career..
The photographs are arranged chronologically into five major periods in order to convey Adams' development as an artist-from his first photographs made in Yosemite and the High Sierra in 1916 to his work in the National Parks in the 1940s up to his last important photographs from the 1960s. An introduction and brief essays on selected images provide information about Adams' life, document the evolution of his technique, and give voice to his artistic vision.
Few artists of any era can claim to have produced four hundred images of lasting beauty and significance. It is a testament to Adams' vision and a lifetime of hard work that a book of this scale can be justified. ANSEL ADAMS: 400 PHOTOGRAPHS is a must-have reference and gift book for anyone who appreciates photography and the allure of the natural world.

Editorial Review:

Few dogs are as emotionally engaging or physically elegant as the greyhound. None are as swift. Its unmatched fleetness is key to the breed’s longtime survival. Bred to hunt, the greyhound has a lineage extending back 8,000 years. Throughout their history, greyhounds have been the companions of kings and an inspiration to writers and artists alike.

Today hundreds of young and healthy purebred greyhounds that do not make the grade on U.S. racetracks are in need of adoptive homes. Through the efforts of hundreds of greyhound-adoption groups, more than 20,000 former racing dogs are adopted into loving homes each year. With greater exposure of the breed, and greater awareness of their plight, all of these dogs can be placed after their tenure on the track and the breeding farms is over.

The otherworldly beauty, quiet grace, and loving disposition of the retired racing greyhound were Barbara Karant’s inspiration for Greyhounds. By photographing her subjects against a pristine white background, she captures the dogs’ indomitable spirit—their spunk, humor, mystery, and charm. Karant’s gloriously expressive pictures, along with evocative texts by Alice Sebold and other writers, make this book a wonderful gift for anyone who has ever shared his or her life with a dog.
