An absolute must buy... 5 out of 5 stars.

McKeowan's Guide since its first issue has been, and still is, a fantastic tome which is a must for every camera collector. I was astounded many years ago when visiting Leningrad to see that a camera vendor selling old Russian cameras from a small table on the pavement had made a full photocopy for his use! To me it is the best catalogue of cameras ever published and I will continue to buy each update as they become available.

A superb general reference 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has awesome coverage of makes and models although the amount of information given of a particular classic (e.g., Hasselblad) seems thin. I guess I'm saying an encyclopedia is needed.

Editorial Review:

The world's most complete camera guide lists over 40,000 collectable cameras from 1839 to the 1980s. More than 10,000 illustrations help with identification. Brief histories of hundreds of camera manufacturers. Serial number lists, top auction price chart, dating by patent numbers, lists of camera clubs & museums, and a full index by make or model. Current market values based on the world's largest database of camera sales. No serious camera collector or dealer would be without this book.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. 3 out of 5 stars.

I saw this book review in a magazine, and it looked to me like the book would be much better than it is. For me, I was looking for photographs and discussion about unique homes that blend seamlessly into the environment...much like the photo on the cover. However, most of the book is dedicated to homes that, in my opinion, do just the opposite. Over 3/4 of the homes discussed are older and not at all what I expected to see in this book. I was expecting much more modern construction, unique shapes, inventive use of space and light, flawless streamlining into the surrounding landscape. Very few homes in the book can be classified in this way. Perhaps it was intended more as a historical overview of how blending homes with nature has evolved. I, however, was expecting to see new and unique ideas for home construction, interesting and environmentally friendly ways to build "into" nature instead of on top of it, and simply how to camouflage your habitat into your surroundings. Many of the interior photos were beautiful, however I was not buying this book for interior design. The majority of photos were of homes that I did not find at all unique. I wish that I would have checked this book out at the library before buying it.

Editorial Review:

Organic Architecture: The Other Modernism illuminates the broad brush stroke of Organic residential architecture throughout the panorama of twentieth-century Modernism. A wide-ranging style that defies definition, Organic buildings are notable in their curves and colors, as well as their exuberant, opulent, and at times, extravagant complexity of line, form, texture, structure, and color.

Editorial Review:

"Hatch" showcases 114 architects who will define the physical fabric of our cities for the next 30 years, as well as the theoretical and interpretive background of architectural practice worldwide. These are practitioners for whom the old categories do not hold, and for whom modernism is no longer the orthodoxy. As the role of architects in cities changes, young practitioners pursue a range of work as writers, critics, curators, teachers, fashion designers, computer programmers, club promoters, materials experts, engineers, installation artists, developers and builders. Critically selected, the work of each architect, writer and photographer in "Hatch" is examined in detail to uncover the approaches that will reach their full fruition in the coming years and decades. In this work, 800 photographs and drawings of projects give more than just eye candy. With this book you can decide for yourself how good these young stars are.

Editorial Review:

Edward Burtynsky's imagery explores the intricate link between industry and nature, combining the raw elements of mining, quarrying, shipping, oil production, and recycling into eloquent, highly expressive visions that find beauty and humanity in the most unlikely places. These images are metaphors for the dilemma of our modern existence: we are drawn by desire--the desire to live well and in comfort--yet we all know that the world is suffering to meet those demands. Our dependence on nature to provide the materials for our consumption and our concern for the health of our planet sets us into uneasy contradiction and feeds the dialogue in Burtynsky's images between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. Burtysnky's latest body of work gives visual form to the industrial and urban transformation of China, a place where industrial forces are gathering on a scale that the world has never experienced before. If the earth's resources were up to now under siege through western colonialism and technological progress, then China is on the brink of a sweeping assault on the planet's ecosystem that is only just forming and is nowhere close to expressing its full impact.

Extremely Disappointed 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I was given this book by a friend because he knows I was raised in Hollywood and love the history of the area. The archival photographs are quite nicely reproduced, however, the current photographs are very poor. I enjoy digital photography and was in Hollywood a few weeks ago and visited the same historic scenes from this book. I quite easily found the angle of the original shots found in this book.. why this book showed those same shots but taken from different angles than the original photos is beyond me. The modern photos in this book are also very unflattering, out of focus and even amateur in appearance... not much more than snapshots.

The worst thing about this book are the many obvious mistakes in locations and historic details. What a shame.

Editorial Review:

Celebrating beloved cities from around the world, this book from the Then and Now series offers a unique combination of historic interest and contemporary beauty. Then and Now Hollywood features over 100 fascinating archival photographs contrasted with specially commissioned, full-color images of the same scene today. Each work is a visual lesson in the historic changes of this great urban landscape.

Editorial Review:

"Wilkes's photographs of the 'dark side' of Ellis Island are extraordinary…this book will be a major event."—David McCullough

For five years (1998-2003) New York photographer Stephen Wilkes explored the hospital complex that comprised the south side of Ellis Island. Neglected for almost fifty years, the buildings were in a state of extreme disrepair: lead paint peeled from the ceilings and walls, vines and trees grew through the floorboards, detritus and debris littered the hallways. In rooms long-abandoned, Wilkes captured a spirited new vision of this gateway to freedom.

Twelve million people passed through Ellis Island. Approximately one percent were turned away for health reasons. Wilkes's powerful images of the underbelly of the island—a purgatory between freedom and captivity—ask us to reflect on the defining experiences of millions. With that rare combination of an eye that sees far beyond the lens with the technical acumen of a master draftsman, Wilkes takes us on an unforgettable journey through our collective past. 77 color photographs.

Size Might Matter... 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Wow... well I must say that I really feel "taken"!! Both Taunton Press and Keister have done excellent work in the past, so I did not think twice about purchasing the book... Unfortunately I did not pay attention to the SIZE! I fully expected this to be a picture book because that was how it was advertised. But I assumed it would be 8"x10" like similar Taunton publications. Did it do what it set out to do? Yes. It is a picture book about cottages. I did not expect the book to be 5" x 6" -- less than half the size of normal books. This is a "post card book". Buyer Beware-- This book is tiny!

Editorial Review:

Popularity meets affordability as America's favorite house style (according to a 2005 survey on About/Architecture.com) comes at a price point that every bungalow fan can afford. There is perennial interest in all things bungalow related. Every year there are numerous books, magazines and floor plans published that are all geared to the bungalow enthusiast. Taunton Press has published several bungalow-related books to great success including Bungalow Style and Updating Classic America: Bungalows. 500 Bungalows features an irresistible package at an incredible price, making this the perfect stocking stuffer or impulse buy.

missing something 3 out of 5 stars.

This covers every possible aspect of bridge building that a layperson could think of. Except for one thing. It hardly mentions the laborers who are responsible for the work that made these bridges possible. Yes, a bridge is made from concrete, brick, steel, timber, cable, iron, and whatnot, but what about the blood, sweat, and tears? The book goes into the construction of piers, the methods used to erect various parts of the bridge, and so forth. But it stops short of mentioning how the laborers were organized, who they were, where they came from, and how many of them died building these works of art.

So, although the book filled me with knowledge, I finished it feeling a little bit empty, as if I had seen the surface of all the seas and oceans of the world, but never a whale or fish.

Editorial Review:

This stunning visual presentation, filled with photographs and illustrations depicting the world's greatest bridges, explains the manners in which laborers, engineers and architects have surmounted the problem of spanning the seemingly impassable from ancient times to the 21st century. A brilliantly written text explains in understandable terms the physics of different bridge types, while fascinating histories describe the "hows" and "whys" behind the world's most recognizable structures.

extremely disappointing 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Unfortunately, this book is a waste of time and money for anyone who is serious about learning anything significant about using digital technology for architectural photography. Here's why:

1. The book has 135 pages. 77 pages are dedicated to information about
equipment, digital work flow and post shooting. The information in these 77 pages is widely available in other, more complete, sources and only serves as padding in this book.

2. Significant portions of each page are blank. But many of the photo illustrations are so small that they can not convey the kind of information that someone needs to evaluate them. On page 58, there are several photos sized at .375 square inch (a postage stamp is .8 square inch). Although other pictures are larger, they are so small that they do not illustrate enough information. Why is not the wasted, blank space on each page used for larger, easier to read photos?

3. The use of High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography, the digital technique of combining the useful segments of more than one exposure, is of important consideration to someone contemplating the extreme brightness range of many architectural interiors and some exteriors. The author devotes only 1/2 page of text (if you consider the blank area), and 1 photo slightly larger than a postage stamp and 3 others .06 square inches in size to this important topic.

In the middle ages, alchemists would write books about their experiments but withhold essential information that would have allowed the reader to duplicate the process. The author of this book, who apparently is an experienced architectural photographer, has succeeded in upholding the archaic tradition of these alchemists.

Editorial Review:

In this day of online media, architects and designers are increasingly faced with exciting and critical marketing and publishing opportunities. Simply documenting a project is no longer enough.

Architectural Photography the Digital Way teaches the reader how to take first-rate photographs of buildings, inside and out. Step-by-step instructions help you learn how to choose the right kind of camera, to use it effectively, and to enhance and manipulate your images. This complete course begins with an introduction to the world of digital imagery and its unique aesthetic considerations. Advanced chapters cover areas such as perspective correction and other features made possible by image editing software. Illustrated with a wealth of color photographs and diagrams, this clearly written, easy-to-use handbook will be your  indispensable guide whenever you pick up the camera.

Editorial Review:

Carmel, California, has always been a community of artists, writers, and freethinkers. During the early part of its rich history, the area was home to Robinson Jeffers, Mary Austin, Ansel Adams, Charles Greene, Jack London, George Sterling, Upton Sinclair, and Henry Miller, among other great artists of the twentieth century. During the late 1980s, actor Clint Eastwood, a longtime resident, served as mayor.

While much about Carmel has changed since the days when Robinson Jeffers could be seen strolling the beach, the area remains one of America's most beautiful. It is also home to many of America's most charming but rarely seen cottages. In Carmel's residential district-- a very private, heavily wooded area surrounding the shops and tourist attractions of the town's often busy main street-- there are no sidewalks or streetlights. The U.S. Postal Service does not offer mail delivery. Homes have no addresses; they are simply known by name. Here, it is not uncommon for tourists, so intrigued by the uniqueness of the local architecture, to climb the fences of private homes in order to get a closer look or snapshot of the house on the other side. Now, for the first time, 34 of these homes can be seen more advantageously, in more than 270 specially commissioned and archival exterior and interior photographs.
