Philadelphia Then and Now 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I sat down on a Sunday morning to casually glance through what I thought was just another coffee table photography book. Several hours later, thoroughly relaxed and enlightened, I closed Philadelphia Then and Now, having deliberately devoured every word, every image, every comparison-both visual and written, cover to cover. What fun it was to go back and forth. The effort taken to capture identical images was evident page after page. The attention to obscure and amusing snippets of historical detail tied the "then" black and white photos and the "now" colorful photos together perfectly.

Treat yourself to a Sunday morning journey to Philadelphia-Then and Now.

Memory Lane 5 out of 5 stars.

A must have for anyone of Philadelphia Origin. Makes for interesting reading and a great conversational coffee table book.

Editorial Review:

A look at the history of Philadelphia, with both modern and historic photography and captions describing the development of this famous city. Part of the highly successful "Then and Now" series, this book captures the changes in this historic city.

Editorial Review:

Modernist masterpieces lost and found: Rare photographs by Julius Shulman TASCHEN's Modernism Rediscovered brought to light for the first time some 300 forgotten architectural masterpieces, drawn from photographer Julius Shulman's personal archives. Paying tribute to houses and buildings that had slipped from public view, Shulman's stunning photographs uncovered a rarely seen side of California Modernism. This extensive, three-volume follow-up to that remarkable volume brings hundreds more architectural gems into the spotlight. The photographs, most of which are published here for the first time in a book, depict buildings by Albert Frey, Louis Kahn, John Lautner, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Richard Neutra, and more, as well as the work of many lesser known architects. Not just restricted to the West Coast this time, the images were taken all across the United States as well as in Mexico, Israel, and Hong Kong. Widely considered the greatest architectural photographer of our time, Julius Shulman has once again opened his archives so that we may rediscover the world's hidden Modernist treasures. The author: Hunter Drohojowska-Philp writes about modern art, design and architecture. Full Bloom: The Art and Life of Georgia O?Keeffe, her first book and the most definitive biography of the artist to date, was published in 2004. She is a regular contributor to Artnews, Artnet, Western Interiors and Design, and the Los Angeles Times.

Editorial Review:

The most iconic historic place in America may also be the most misunderstood. For more than 170 years, the true nature and appearance of the Alamo, the cradle of Texas liberty, has eluded historians and artists alike. Partially demolished soon after the famous battle, the mission/fortress' appearance grew more and more indistinct. Even more recently, Hollywood has itself compounded the problem by redesigning the place to suit the artistic purposes of the dramatic script. But the truth was lurking all along, in old sketches, plats, diagrams, and later archeological digs. Now for the first time, all of the available sources have been meticulously consulted and brought together to create the most accurate illustrated book on the true appearance of the Alamo in 1836 ever produced. The reader is taken through the entire compound, inside and out, room to room, and shown areas never before depicted. For clarity, the compound is divided into sectors, each chapter covering a sector, which is then explored in detail. Through extremely realistic photo illustrations, as well as dramatic original artwork with explanatory text, the author breathes new life into the 1836 Alamo, and makes it real.Scholars, students, artists, and readers of history all will find this a fascinating journey back in time.

Editorial Review:

The iron colossus: the construction of the Eiffel Tower in drawings and photographs.

When it was completed in 1889, the Eiffel Tower was the highest structure in the world, measuring 300 meters (984 feet). Built for the World`s Fair, it was initially granted a 20-year permit; this permit was thankfully extended and now the Eiffel Tower is one of the world`s most famous structures, having become practically synonymous with Paris itself and receiving more than six million visitors annually.

This reprint explores the design and construction of this remarkable building; published in 1900 as a large folio by Gustave Eiffel himself in a limited edition of 500 copies, the original was never sold on the market it was exclusively given and donated by Eiffel. Featuring 53 double-page plates of 4.300 technical drawings explaining the design as well as 33 photographs of the construction, the book reveals the complex and fascinating process of bringing the Eiffel Tower to life. Though the technical drawing will especially appeal to designers wishing to discover the engineering genius behind Eiffel`s masterpiece, everyone can appreciate this very rare and special book about Paris`s glorious mascot.

Not over the top 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 0 people found this review helpful.

With this book you can get a good idea of the warm ranges of wall colors that create a Tuscan mood. This book focuses more on color and neutral tones as opposed to some that go for the white tones. The decor shown is generally not over the top and focused on the grandiose villas that are out of reach of most everyone. There are many modest but lovely homes shown and you can pull fabric inspiration and accessory inspiration. I would give the book 3.5 stars due to some of the rooms being a bit sparse in design and lacking in real life things such as television/stereos, etc. That however is typical of most design books.

Editorial Review:

Tuscany has long exerted a magnetic pull over visitors to this most romantic of Italy's provinces. From Lord Byron and Henry James to contemporary writers, designers, and artists, everyone is charmed by the rolling Tuscan landscape, its magical light, its rich artistic and visual culture, and above all, its highly sensuous way of life.

Private Tuscany reveals the interior style of some of the area's most charming homes--the pared-down beauty of a film director's farmhouse retreat; the refined elegance of an aristocrat's seventeenth-centry palazzo high in the hills; the Gothic mood of a winemaker's medieval fortress; the modern chic of a designer's country house; or the earthy character of an architect's villa, drenched with color and light.

Whether it is the ancient terra-cotta floors, gardens fragrant with herbs, or candlelit dinners on outdoor terraces, the spirit of living in Tuscany is alive in these pages in brilliant color.

Fascinating picto-history timeline perspective of Cleveland! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I've been in Cleveland now for about 10 years, having moved here permanently to be with my wife. I'm always learning new things about this interesting and often vexing area. Even though I don't especially like living in the Cleveland/NE Ohio area today (this area has been hit hard economically, and it shows), this book has enabled me to learn much more about the glory, grit, and history of this interesting American city, in words and pictures. Cleveland proper was once the 5th largest American city, and the grandiosity and urban landscape and feel has been captured perfectly with the many turn of the century black & white classic photos of the downtown area, or 'Millionaires Row', just to name 2 geographical areas cited in this book! The 'side by side' juxtaposition of many of the classic 'then' pictures to the 'now' pictures, with many structures and/or buildings still standing, is eerily fascinating to say the least. If you live in NE Ohio, or go there often, this book is a MUST. You won't be able to put it down, and you will be mesmerized by Cleveland's humble industrial beginnings that helped mold NE Ohio into what it has become today! Also, looking at all the photos of people that existed 100 years ago makes you feel your own mortality as well. What is considered 'modern' today will be 'classic' or 'retro' tomorrow!

Editorial Review:

Cleveland Then and Now features fascinating archival photographs contrasted with specially commissioned, full-color images of the same scene today. This is a visual lesson in the historic changes of a great city and a captivating look at how time changes the world we live in.

This book's a keeper...... 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Marty's keen eye catches the souls of his famous subjects in a way that the ordinary photographer has missed. This book is a masterpiece (just like his last album) and belongs on every coffee table in America. His photos are unbelievable and his accompanying words prove Marty's talent goes way beyond his music.

Been there, saw that, took a picture to save the moment..... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Marty has been blessed, not only with musical talent, but with a real sense of being a part of history. Thank God Miss Hilda turned him onto photography, as well as music. The moments captured in his book will be there for us to remember people and places long after they are gone. Not just for the good times, but the hard times as well, the "road", the music, the eyes of the pilgrims looking out at you from these pages, make for an absorbing journey across America and thru Marty's life. And he's right about using black & white vs color. Makes you LOOK, not get drawn to some bright color, instead of getting the point of the picture. Give the boy another 25 years and I know we'll get a companion volume to cover the new millenium part of his journey. Although, I hope he doesn't wait THAT long.

Editorial Review:

Marty Stuart, one of the most popular country artists, portrays well-known and not-so-well-known pilgrims through spectacular photographs and well-written words. Marty portrays in the book "a life that ain't easy, but one that I understand".

A beautiful book for browsing 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Home built by the water are as popular today as they were throughout the whole of recorded human history. Superbly enhanced by two hundred color photographs taken by Brian Vanden Brink, "At Home By The Sea: Houses Designed For Living At The Water's Edge" has architect Bruce Snider taking the reader on a spectacular tour of twenty sea-side homes from Canada's Bay of Fundy, to the tropical splendor of St. Barthelemy, to such landmark sites as South Carolina's Hilton Head, Massachusetts' Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard, to California's Belvedere and Carmel, to several stunningly beautiful locations in Maine. Floor plans and site planes for most of these showcased homes are provided, as well as seaside vista views, home interiors, decks, porches. Windows, mirrors, building materials and decorative items are set within the context of interior designs. A beautiful book for browsing, "At Home By The Sea" is replete with inspirations and examples for those seeking ideas for their own projects and a welcome addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library reference collections.

Editorial Review:

Acclaimed architectural photographer Brian Vanden Brink joins forces with Custom Home magazine editor Bruce Snider to take readers into 21 stunning seaside homes from Canada's Bay of Fundy to St. Barthelemy. While Snider writes about homes that range from traditional to ultra-modern, Vanden Brink's photos show that these homes are intimately linked to their seascape settings. This book provides inspiration for anyone who wants to evoke a sense of the sea and shore at home.

For all Paris 's lovers 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was given to me,along with the London's one.
One does not need to be an archictect or a professionnal builder to appreciate this masterpiece.
In the last 100 years, Paris has eluded any massive destruction and as such has kept its historic, poetic and romantic characters.
The book is precised, well mapped, and the photos are top notched.
It would not be easy to carry around while visiting Paris! however one can list ahead of time the buildings of interest.
the book is photographed and written, by three Americans, which makes it even more interesting ,with their artistic objectivity and a view with a non parisian or gallic optic.
well worth the investment, and a real treasure.

Editorial Review:

Perhaps the most picturesque of all international cities, Paris is the quintessential walker's paradise, with architectural delights down every winding street. It is the city of the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, of the Louvre and Monmartre. But, within its 20 concentric arrondissements are many surprises too, from glass office towers to jewel-box mansions to massive public buildings. The monuments, private houses, museums, hotels, and myriad other structures that make up the widely various neighborhoods of Paris have been captured here as never before, by photographers Jorg Brockmann and James Driscoll.

Each of the 1,000 photographs is accompanied by detailed and informative text recounting the history, significance, and the current state of each building. There are also neighborhood maps and fascinating sidebars and appendices, all adding up to an unprecedented view of a uniquely beautiful city that has captivated the imagination of world travelers for centuries.
