Editorial Review:

Written for the beginner, Practical DV Filmmaking guides you thorough the process of making a film with low-cost digital equipment: from development through to production, post-production and distribution. While the technical tools you need are fully explained, the book concentrates on filmmaking principles throughout, illustrating how these tools can be used to achieve stylistic approaches for innovative filmmaking.

The book assumes no background knowledge in either technology or filmmaking and is divided into four key areas:
*DEVELOPMENT: turn your idea into a workable script, storyboard and schedule.
*PRODUCTION: develop skills to shoot original short films and turn a zero-to-low budget to your advantage.
*POST-PRODUCTION: learn basic editing techniques to enhance your original idea using iMovie, Premiere and other popular tools.
*DISTRIBUTION: set up a website and use the internet to promote your film. Includes numerous links to useful websites. Plus, top tips for how to enter a film festival and a new chapter on developing a career.

Projects enable you to master each step of the process taking you through different aspects of filmmaking today. Gradually you will find out where your strengths lie and how to make the most of them. The book also encourages stylistic development by intruding theoretical approaches to filmmaking. A glossary of terms plus an appendix of resources make this guide a one-stop essential handbook to DV filmmaking practice for beginners and student filmmakers.

* Master low-budget filmmaking principles with easy step-by-step techniques and practical projects
* Develop a real world perspective through case studies and interviews with successful filmmakers
* Combine technical know-how with stylistic approaches to filmmaking.

Editorial Review:

Still the finest comprehensive analysis of the subject to have appeared in English, Magical Reels charts the development of Latin American film industries in a world increasingly dominated by the advanced technology and massive distribution budgets of the North American mainstream. John King sets up a historical framework to unfold the overlapping histories of cinema in the continent: the itinerant filmmakers of the silent era who projected their films in cafes and village halls, the inventive use of vernacular music and local comedy in the early sound pictures, the ""golden age"" of 1940s Mexican cinema, and the new cinema - oppositional cinema made ""with an idea in the head and a camera in the hand"" - of the late 1950s and beyond. A new chapter written for this edition examines Latin American cinema in the previous decade.

Not a good reference book 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you're an experienced iMovie user wanting to learn FCE, then this book is not the best one. It's a useful tutorial book for a class, but simple references like creating slow motion clips, importing media from iMovie or iTunes, switching around clips, etc. are simply not easy to find using the index of this book.
I highly suggest Final Cut Express HD for Mac OS X (Visual QuickStart Guide) as a much better reference guide. And if you can find some audiovisual tutorials about FCE, those would work better for you than this book.

Editorial Review:

The only Apple-authorized guide to Final Cut Express HD 3.5, this book delivers the techniques you need to make movie magic with DV or HDV footage. An amazing companion to an amazing film! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Do you love "Berlin Alexanderplatz" as much as my husband and I do? Are you a Fassbinder fanatic who appreciates all of his special photographic details? If so, you will adore this book. It's huge, beautifully made, and full of amazing stills from the film. The essays are also fascinating. This is a bargain!!! It's a must for all Fassbinder fans, students, and scholars.

Editorial Review:

Alfred Doblin's 1929 Berlin Alexanderplatz is a masterpiece of modern European literature. The first German novel to adopt the technique of James Joyce, it tells the story of ex-con Franz Biberkopf. Struggling to survive among the poverty, unemployment, crime, and burgeoning Nazism of 1920s Germany, fate teases him with a little pleasure before cruelly turning him in.

In 1980, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the genius of New German Cinema, adapted Doblin's novel into a legendary and controversial TV series starring Hanna Schygulla, Barbara Sukowa, and others. Presented in its re-mastered movie version at the 2007 Berlin film festival to unanimous acclaim, it will be on view in an international travelling exhibition.

This book features over 500 color film stills from the series, the complete script, and essays by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Susan Sontag, and exhibition curator Klaus Biesenbach.

Editorial Review:

Color and Mastering for Digital Cinema explores the implications for motion picture post production processes and changes required to the supporting equipment and software. While a new concept to the motion picture community, the selection of the wide gamut, output-referred XYZ color space for digital cinema distribution is based on decades of color science and experience in other industries. The rationale for choosing XYZ and the other color encoding parameters is explained and the book also provides a full case study of the development of DLP Cinema® projectors by Texas Instruments. Finally, this book explores how the XYZ color encoding concept can be extended to support enhanced display technologies in the future.

This book contains:

* Brilliant 4-color illustrations that compliment the color science explanations

* Never before published industry information from author Glenn Kennel, a world leader in digital cinema color technology

* Descriptions of key issues and background on decisions that were made in the standardization process

By Glenn Kennel, Glenn Kennel is VP/GM of Feature Film Services at Laser Pacific Media Corporation, a leading provider of a full range of post production services for television and feature film. illustrated, popular biography of the famous cowboy couple 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The long marriage and professional relationship of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans throughout the 1940s and '50 is presented in a mostly sunny light, as it was in their popular TV series and movies. Not that there aren't some dark moments: Roy Roger's first wife died; and three of the couple's nine children died. But while the sorrows of such moments are not overlooked, it is the strength of Roy and Dale which comes shining through, as when dealing with culprits or problems in their films. The popular, largely pictorial biography contains a number of heretofore unpublished family photos. Fans of these stars of early TV and aficionados of popular culture will take to this book. While not undermining or even threatening the fond popular image of the couple, it presents them as not just stars, but ones who had a life outside of the limelight as well.

Editorial Review:

Roy Rogers and Dale Evans ruled the West from the silver screen as the King of Cowboys and and Queen of the West. Off screen, this husband and wife duo raised a family and lived the "Code of the West." Now, in this new book, the Rogers family shares their memories of Roy, Dale, and Trigger, along with their other sidekicks and more than a hundred never before seen, behind-the-scenes photographs.

High end digital cinematography can truly challenge the film camera in many of the technical, artistic and emotional aspects of what we think of as 'cinematography'. This book is a guide for practising and aspiring cinematographers and DOPs to digital cinematography essentials - from how to use the cameras to the rapidly emerging world of High Definition cinematography and 24p technology.

This book covers the `on-the-set' knowledge you need to know - its emphasis lies in practical application, rather than descriptions of technologies, so that in this book you will find usable `tools' and information to help you get the job done. From `getting the look' to lighting styles and ratios, what is needed for different types of shoots and the technical preparation required, this is a complete reference to the knowledge and skills required to shoot high end digital films. The book also features a guide to the Sony DVW in-camera menus - showing how to set them up and how they work - a
device to save you time and frustration on set.

Paul Wheeler is a renowned cinematographer/director of photography and trainer, he runs courses on Digital Cinematography at the National Film & Television School and has lectured on the Royal College of Art's MA course and at The London International Film School. He has been twice nominated by BAFTA for a Best Cinematography award and also twice been the winner of the INDIE award for Best Digital Cinematography.
