Editorial Review:

DESCRIPTION: Sally Mann remains among the most innovative, talked-about, and daring artists working with a camera today. DEEP SOUTH is a much anticipated collection of her exquisite, ethereal landscape photographs, taken in the years since she rose to international fame with her groundbreaking book Immediate Family.

The photographs in DEEP SOUTH, many produced with the 19th-century collodion process and a variety of toning techniques, capture what Mann calls the "radical light of the American South." Borrowing methods favored by early masters of landscape photography, Mann bends classic craftsmanship to serve the expressive needs of a heightened contemporary sensibility. Serendipitous technical imperfections, such as light leaks or scratches on negatives, echo the accidental, chaotic workings of time. From ghostly images of historic battlefields to painterly visions of Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and her native Virginia, Mann's landscape photographs transport the viewer to another time and place.

I first saw this book while i was looking through the photography section at the University of Guelph library. This book probably influenced my photography more than any other. Unfortunately, it also made me start doing shots with my nikon that are better suited for a large format system. The introductory interview with the photographer is possibly the most interesting discussion on the topic of light and photography. If you plan to become anything more than an amature photographer, PLEASE get this book NOW.

Editorial Review:

This classic volume of colour photographs of Cape Cod is back in print in an expanded edition with a new preface and photographs from Joel Meyerowitz's continuing body of work taken on Cape Cod. Originally published in 1979, the book is regarded as one of the most influential photography texts published in the latter part of the 20th century. Common scenes - tiny figures on a beach, a porch railing against a storm-darkened sky, a blue raft against a summer cottage - are transformed by the poignant light of the Cape and the photographer's subtle vision.

Editorial Review:

Manuel Alvarez Bravo is generally recognized as one of the masters of modern photography and one of Mexico's most significant artists. He is well-known for his black and white images, therefore this selection of never-before-published Polaroids might be a surprise to those familiar only with his signature style. The simple design of the book--a single photograph per page--reproduced in the original Polaroid's dimensions--creates an ideal context in which to enjoy this segment of Bravo's work. Colette Alvarez Urbajtel, the photographer's widow writes: "Although Manuel used a Hasselblad with special backing until his late career, when Polaroid cameras appeared on the market, he was quick to avail himself of their convenience and speed. He started taking black and white Polaroids with the appropriate fixtures, and then moved on to color. His work in color tended to be the result of some sudden impulse, when he had just supplied himself with materials or in quest of a particular effect. It might be at home, on the weekend, when there were people visiting, or when he wished to capture some prank of his daughters . . ." Beautifully reproduced, Manuel Alvarez Bravo: Polaroids reveals a playful, charming, and spontaneous side of the great Mexican master of light and shade, and is the first book on his work published since his death in 2003. It will appeal to those interested in photography and Mexican art in general.

Editorial Review:

Laura Letinsky's photo series Hardly More Than Ever records, in the style of Flemish still-life painters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the aftermath of human consumption, capturing sunny tables against white walls, crumbs, orange peels, melon rinds and candy wrappers. Like her forebears, Letinsky evidences human presence through its absence, suggests death through decay (in this case, of peonies and half-eaten toast) and tacks on a moral message about the obscenity of abundance, of having crumbs to leave. Also like her forebears, she contradicts those messages implicitly, or at the very least complicates them, by making art that feels very likely to last, to withstand the effects of time. Recent photographs of formal flower gardens and empty rooms on moving day, with a shelf, a shade or a surge suppressor left behind, explore similar issues. Letinsky, who teaches at the University of Chicago, studied photography at Yale and has been a Guggenheim fellow. Her work has appeared at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museums of Modern Art in San Francisco and New York.

Editorial Review:

"At least a dozen of Helen Levitt’s photographs seem to me as beautiful, perceptive, satisfying, and enduring as any lyrical work that I know. In their general quality and coherence, moreover, the photographs as a whole body, as a book, seem to me to combine into a unified view of the world, an uninsistent but irrefutable manifesto of a way of seeing, and in a gently and wholly unpretentious way, a major poetic work." (James Agee) World-renowned for her iconic black-and-white street photographs, New York City’s visual poet laureate Helen Levitt also possesses a little-known archive of color work, which has been collected for the first time in Slide Show, her third powerHouse Books monograph. In 1959, and again in 1960, Helen Levitt received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation to photograph in color on the streets of New York, where she had photographed two decades earlier in black-and-white. But tragically, the best of these pioneering color pictures were stolen from her apartment in 1970 and she had to start over again. In 1974 the new work was shown as a continuous slide projection at New York’s Museum of Modern Art—an early example of a slide show presentation by a museum and one of the first exhibitions of serious color photography anywhere in the world. Slide Show presents more than one hundred photographs—including eight surviving images from the 1959–60 series—more than half of which have never been exhibited or published before. This impressive monograph is a worthy successor to her magnum opus, Crosstown (powerHouse, 2001), which included the largest collection of her color pictures to date, and to her more intimate volume of black-and-white work, Here and There (powerHouse, 2004), which presented more than eighty "unknown" Levitts taken over six decades.

Well done! 4 out of 5 stars.

As a professional photographer and writer, there are a select few who fit the bill of "really great" for me. In this case, there are three photos in this book that make the whole book more than worth while having. Maybe a little heavy on the Christmas photos, but in all a very sensitive and introspective look at one of my favorite islands.

Editorial Review:

With more than a million visitors a year, Nantucket is a famed getaway, but only a few natives can attest to its mystic beauty in the fall and winter months. Among them is Cary Hazlegrove, whose Nantucket: The Quiet Season is the stunning follow-up to her celebrated Nantucket: Seasons on the Island. With Hazlegrove's signature photographs and evocative quotes from residents, this book captures what tourists rarely see: the island's hushed off-season life. Holiday hearths and cheery shopfronts provide warm refuge from chilly bogs and snow-blanketed dunes, revealing an island winter wonderland. With over one hundred images and a foreword by best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick, Nantucket: The Quiet Season offers a unique view of the island, allowing all to enjoy its multifaceted charm year-round.

Useful thorough text 5 out of 5 stars.

If you want to get a quick grasp of color photography - theory, technique, history etc... this is the right book for you. It is simple and straight forward. The format is a bit to text bookish but after all it is a text book.
I highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Here is an authoritative, comprehensive, practical resource for understanding the ideas, images, history, and processes of color photography. It shows readers how theory relates to practice with hands-on examples and activities and includes a diverse portfolio of work from 200 photographers along with their commentary. A tear-out 18% gray card, color checker, and sliding gray scale (items that bought separately would cost more than the book!) are also included.
