Essential in a photographer's library 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm only halfway through and can only ask why such a book only surfaces now. Previous concise compilations of writings on photography concentrated on the mediums origins and historical figures. This one gives us a more contemporary context (ie the 50ies) and goes on from there until today, focusing on the ideas of key figures. Thank you editors!

Editorial Review:

This collection of essays drawn from the classic writings of the 20-century, as well as the most influential talents of the present, illuminates the intuition and spirit of people making images. The features include: provides educators and fans of photography with full view of what drives and inspires photographers to create great work; and offers a broad perspective on photography, including essays from designers, editors, and gallery owners. The book is being co-published with The School of Visual Arts. It is made up of classic writings from the 20th century, as well as the most influential talents working today.

Love the book, hate the title 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I thought the book was very helpful and a great eye opener to new photographers setting up a photography business. It really does drive point the fact that this is a BUSINESS first. I think the information was usefull and informative. I don't like the title though, this is a VERY difficult industry right now so to imply that anyone can make "Big Bucks" is a disservice. There is money to be made, but it takes a lot of work and business senese. Its a small think but reminds me of the mindset of the eightys and early ninetys..not the current state of the industry.

Editorial Review:

Aimed at professionals and beginners alike: the first systematic attempt to find out how photographers of world stature approach their work, and what it is that makes them succeed.

This essential new guide to photography draws upon in-depth interviews with established photographers from the fields of fashion, art, portraiture, documentary photography, and advertising as well as comments from picture editors, curators, agency directors, and publishers who reveal what they look for when choosing an image.

The book first focuses on photographers' working practices, from how Mario Sorrenti got the inspiration to photograph a naked Kate Moss draped over a couch for the iconic Calvin Klein campaign to how the Dutch portrait photographer Rineke Dijkstra gets the best out of her subjects. What made the photographer start taking pictures? How did he or she develop a signature style? What is the process involved in going from concept to shoot? How important is postproduction?

Then the book turns to selection. How does the picture editor of the New York Times Magazine decide which photographer to commission for the next fashion spread? What kind of photograph, according to the Senior Curator of London's Photographers Gallery, is worthy of being hung in a gallery? What advice would art book publisher Gerhard Steidl give a budding photographer? Whether it is the question of what to look for in an image, views on cropping, or the pros and cons of color versus black and white, the shapers of taste give acute and useful accounts of their methods. 150+ illustrations in color and black and white.

AWESOME 5 out of 5 stars.

First of all, it's HUGE and BOLD! ... not wimpy on presentation. Very interesting narrative you don't normally see in photographer's projects; you can really follow these soldiers through their intriguing training process and their "becoming".

Excellent book 5 out of 5 stars.

I must admit I am a bit biased. My son was in Buds class 246 which is the subject of the book. It gave me a real life insight into what BUDs is really all about. I had a difficult time finding the book a local books stores and really appreciated the fact that Amazon carried it. Some hard to find dealers wanted as much as $120.00 for a used copy of it.

authentic realism 5 out of 5 stars.

Bravo to Richard for his hard work and dedication to the SEAL/SOF community. I was an instructor in BUDS during the making of Richards book and couldnt have asked for a more genuinely interested person to be around us. Richard has the unique ability of photographing his subjects in the most intimate situations, all while maintaining unshakeable rapport with instructors and students alike. Richard has given a much needed inside look (without going too far) at what these men go through during training. Hats off to Richard for a first class photo journal. BH

Sell & Resell Your Photos-The Ultimate Photographers Bible 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I received this book 3 months ago, and it never leaves my side. As a budding would-be professional photographer,I learned more about the Photography business than I ever imagined. Just what I was looking for in the first place. eg: What photos sell, and what Photo buyers are looking for - Surprise! Surprise. How to get started professionally - a real eye-opener. Resources to search out etc. Excellent!
My only criticism - I am left with all these questions that need answers and maybe that was the idea, so that me, the reader, will reach out for more information and spur me on to find more keys to moving forward. Please write another book Ronn Engh

Editorial Review:

What distinguishes Rohn Engh's book on how to sell photographs--now in its fourth edition--from the many volumes on the subject? Could it be his honest, no-nonsense approach to the topic, as opposed to the get-rich-quick slant of many competitors? His practical, step-by-step advice? His pragmatic sales techniques and principles, which teach niche marketing and explain the vast difference between good pictures of popular subjects (sunsets, wildflowers) and the type of photographs in demand by the editors who actually buy them? All of the above and more, including solid advice about selling photos in the electronic age.

for people who are new to DSLR and A200 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As a person who is learning DSLR photography with his new Sony Alpha A200, I decided to buy some books, one of which is Magic Lantern Guides. I didn't know what to expect because there was not much information about this book online, and I haven't owned a book from this series before either.

The book is in Black&White, size of a thick booklet that you would expect to get with any fairly complicated electronic. It will help you understand the every feature the A200 has. It is kind of an expended version of the original Instruction Manual with more words and examples. I wish Sony included this book with the camera.

On the other hand, if you already know some SLR photography, or own other DSLR books, this book may feel too repetitive since many concepts explained in the book apply to any SLR usage in general. In other words this book may not add too much to your knowledge.

If you are new to DSLR, you bought your A200 recently, and if you wish the Instruction Manual was much more descriptive, then this book is for you.

Chapters:
Understanding Digital Photography
Features and Functions
Digital Recording and In-camera Processing
The Menus
Camera and Shooting Operations
Flash Photography

Editorial Review:

Sony has something for beginning photographers, or those just going digital: an excellent entry-level D-SLR with a 10.2MP sensor, High ISO sensitivity range to 3200, and High ISO Noise Reduction technology. The 40-segment honeycomb, with its spot and center-weighted metering systems, offers outstanding exposure accuracy. And the Super SteadyShot® image stabilization systems increase a novice’s ability to achieve quality photos. Newcomers eager to master all the basics, and make the most of their new equipment, will find both the Magic Lantern Guides and the DVD Guide essential components of their photography kit.
