Quality in Photography: a guide for excellent results 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Do you suspect there are photographic 'best practices' out there that would enable you to make your finished photographs better? Would you like 2 very accomplished and successful photographers to help mentor you through the trial and error as you fine tune your own procedures. If so, then "Quality in Photography" by Roger Hicks and Frances Schultz is for you.

It provides a structured path towards achieving overall excellent results. It examines each node in the process of making a picture, where your choices either improve or degrade the quality of the finished print, providing background information to enable informed decisions. This linear approach ensures continuous improvement with confidence, and minimizes backtracking. The authors are unafraid to go out on a limb and discuss their own personal preferences, providing plenty of examples of their own work -- successes as well as learning experiences! Though compact and concise, its scope includes key criteria on camera gear, film and paper selection, choosing darkroom chemicals, whether to do-it-yourself or use commercial labs, print mounting, composition, and much more. Generous, up to date references are provided on detailed advanced techniques which are interesting, but outside the scope of this volume. The author's methodology is reasonable and efficient, and lays groundwork for readers to build upon, although some sections would have benefitted from additional detail from the authors experiences.

For photographic technical artisans the process of trial and error may be an end in itself, and many advanced photographers have already settled on procedures which meet their demands. For the rest of us...I strongly recommend reading "Quality in Photography."

Editorial Review:

Photographers looking to put the stamp of excellence on their work will find just the help they need in this excellent, comprehensive instructional book that shows through clear, practical, jargon-free text and outstanding and varied photography how a combination of technical skill, art, theory, and practice can produce quality pictures. The book covers all film formats, plus digital imaging, taking readers through every phase of the photographic process, explaining how each step contributes to the quality of the final image. Topics range from lenses, film, and shooting to film processing, the darkroom, silver gelatin printing, and advanced printing.

Warning! This book is NOT for beginners. 1 out of 5 stars.
30 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Unless you are already very familiar with photgraphy terms and techniques, you are buying a lot of frustration and wasting your time and money. The author many time talks as if he is talking to another professional photographer. For example the author did not explain by a simple diagram what he means by 'angle of the subject from the sun' or 'exposing off the ground' or 'exposing off the sky'. Before start using many photography terms in the book, the author does not define or explain terms like exposure compensation, flash fill mode, etc. or at least does not explain clearly. The author wastes a lot of paragraphs on useless talk that is rather obvious or does not add to the understanding of the subject matter. This is dangerous to the poor trees that get cut. In the enire book there is not even a single diagram! Color pictures are only in the center of the book. Most photographs are small size black and white newspaper quality.

Editorial Review:

This book guides readers through the essentials of both "pure" and "hybrid" digital photography using a hands-on style of instruction. Beginning with the fundamentals of photography, this guide addresses how shooting differs when using digital methods. Other subjects covered include hardware and software needs, shooting tips for a variety of settings, and manipulating and outputting images using a variety of techniques and formats.

limited appeal - overshadowed by digital cameras 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The potential audience for this book is very limited, for two reasons. Firstly, and obviously, it is for researchers in photography, who want to improve the performance of film. For example, by reducing the granularity or the surface tension. The book is not for the amateur photographer who maintains her own darkroom. Rather, it is for those developing new types of film.

The second reason for the book's limited appeal is the rise of digital cameras. The global customer base for film is shrinking continually. Granted, at some point, it will stabilise. All this means that few companies, even on the scale of Kodak, can afford to maintain an extensive research effort in film.

There is actually a third reason, which may be discerned from the book. The understanding of the physical and chemical processes in film is very mature. Film is a known technology which has probably been pushed to its performance limit. Future gains are likely to be very incremental. Whereas digital cameras (and this is a phrase which will soon be elided to just 'cameras') still have much room for improvements in their baseline semiconductor technology.

Editorial Review:

This book presents mathematical models that arise in current photographic science. The book contains seventeen chapters, each dealing with one area of photographic science, and a final chapter containing exercises. Each chapter, except the two introductory chapters and the last one, begins with general background information at a level understandable by graduate and undergraduate students. It then proceeds to develop a mathematical model, using mathematical tools such as ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and stochastic processes. Next, some mathematical results are mentioned, often providing a partial solution to problems raised by the model. Finally, most chapters include open problems. The last chapter of the book contains "Modeling and Applied Mathematics" exercises based on the material presented in the earlier chapters. These exercises are intended primarily for graduate students and advanced undergraduates.

Editorial Review:

You will find Beginning Photography using the Stop System a good way to begin your carreer in photography, a good way to take the first step.

The first part of this book does not deal with how to expose film in a camera, but rather, what to do with the film after exposure. It provides a step-by-step procedure for loading and developing film, and for printing the negatives. It assumes little or no experience in developing or printing. We have tried to make the book as friendly as possible and have deferred any detailed information to the appendix.

The second part of this book provides a simple, efficient and intelligent procedure for making test prints in the darkroom, and for test exposures in a studio or outdoors without the need for a light meter. The procedure is called the Stop System.

It was devised by Pierre-Yves Mahé and has been used extensively in teaching photography at Spéos, the Paris Photographic Institute. It has been highly successful. Students on their first day in the darkroom are able to make excellent black and white prints.

Not that great a buy 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Though this book looked great on "paper," it fell way short of what was promised. I didn't learn anything new from this book or see anything much different from other scrapbooking guides. Lots of the same old techniques were covered, and I wasn't even that impressed with the way those techniques were handled. I guess if you have never done any scrapbooking -- or if you've never SEEN a scrapbook -- this book might impress you, but it didn't impress me. I wish I hadn't spent money on this one.

Editorial Review:

All in color! Every person who lovingly assembles a scrapbook is constantly on the lookout for new ways to make it sparkle with originality and style. And with all the ideas here, ranging from decoupage to gold leafing to watercoloring, every page of your book will be better than ever before! Each technique includes both primary designs for decorating an entire page and secondary patterns (including many borders) that quickly jazz up any layout. Try incorporating antique photos or vintage postcards, using decorative-edge scissors, covering paper with patterned fabric, sponging a background, or drawing a border with a marker. Fabulous sample pages will provide endless inspiration! Trim size: 8 1/2 x 10.
