Cool, cool, cool. I'm so envious of the people involved! 5 out of 5 stars.

Unfortunately the review form doesn't let me enter a rating above 10!

A Photomosaic is, as the name suggests, a mosaic of photos. Hundreds or thousands of images reduced in size and placed on a grid so as to create an impression of a larger, overall image. The 'tiles' used are selected for their color, shapes and shading within the image so as to most truthfully represent the relevant section of the larger image. What's more, the descriptive content of the 'tiles' is usually relevant to the larger image. Some of the best examples of this are the widescreen stills used from George Lucas's Star Wars in generating larger images of Darth Vader, and Yoda, and civil war photographs used to create an image of Abraham Lincoln.

The book contains 96 pages with 28 full page photomosaics, and in addition often has enlarged sections of each image to show the smaller image content. Interspersed with the images are thought provoking quotes relating to the pictures, and an all too short introduction briefly describes how photomosaics came about. (Not technical enough in my opinion). The images are created in a 6 color printing process for exceptional quality results

This is is one of those ideas where I think to myself - 'I wish I'd been involved in this'. As the artist/creator Robert Silvers says - 'This is for lovers of pictures'. One of my main interests in computing is the generation of images by use of computers, whether it be popular methods such as fractals, ray-tracing or any other form of computer art. Even the 3D Eye auto-stereogram pictures are computer generated. (I assumed the dig on the back cover in respect of the fact that everyone can see photomosaics, was in reference to these auto-stereograms!)

This concept of using pictures to create pictures seems simple on the surface and sounds like another easy money maker for someone along the line. Maybe it is, but the technology behind creating such pictures is leading edge and was performed by Rob Silvers as part of his Masters at MIT Media Lab. The amount of work involved in collating tens of thousands of images from all sorts of sources, and then analyzing each image as to color and shading content, underlying shapes within the image, and descriptive content of the images is immense. All sorts of tricks were used to speed up and improve the quality of the photomosaics produced.

If I were to have this as a coffee-table book at a party, I would need one per visiting guest, and I would get a quiet thirty seconds whilst people got the gist of the book and then it would be the talk of the evening. (Maybe that's an indication of my guests rather than the book!)

I would dearly have loved to have been involved at that exciting development stage of the (patent pending) technology, but sadly this book is likely to be as near to being involved as I ever get. Mind you it is hard, in any case, not to get involved with this fascinating book. I shall be putting an order in for my 1999 calender as soon as it comes out.

This review comes from somebody who does NOT live in Boston, unlike many other reviewers!!

I don't like saying negative things and I've debated posting this review for quite a while but I feel I must. I'm so mad at myself for having bought this book just from reading descriptions that I have to say something.

I have quite a few photography technique books and this one was one book too many. It has some nice images along with brief explanations on how they were created. The problem I have with the book are the manipulated images, which make up about half of the book. I'm sorry, but I just don't see the point in adding water, clouds and birds to all those images, and often it's the same bird. I'd recommend looking through the book before purchasing, and if you can put up with the manipulated images, go for it, but I just don't see the point in them. Another thing-I haven't gone digital yet but I imagine that the manipulated images can be produced quicker on the computer nowadays.

Editorial Review:

The techniques featured in this book will give beginning and experienced photographers alike new ideas for each step of the photographic process. Every aspect of the 60 featured images is described in detail including the concept development, the composition of the shot, the lighting set-up, and the darkroom techniques used to finish the photo. The author also presents many methods for altering images in the darkroom-including sandwiching negatives, texturing and toning prints, and the art of combining different images into one composite print.

Beyond Ordinary Photography 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is aimed at the photographer who wants to go beyond "straight" photography and into the realm of the other visual artistic media. It does this by describing a number of different techniques less commonly used by photographers that can be applied to photographic images.

The techniques explored range from the traditional like multiple exposure and toning to what some might consider more avant-garde, like photograms, which are images made on photo-sensitive media without a camera, and distressed images, that is, those deliberately subjected to destructive forces. The authors recognize that the mechanics of photography are in flux and so refer to both chemical darkrooms and digital manipulation.

This is more of an idea book than a how-to book. The descriptions of most of the techniques are cursory. If one wanted to use a technique in connection with one's photography, one would probably have to do additional research. In addition, the number of examples provided in the book is necessarily limited to about a half dozen for each technique. For me, with the exception of some approaches of which I had already been thinking, that was not enough for me to see how I could apply the procedures to my own photography.

Of course, that may be a major problem with a catalogue of unusual procedures. It is difficult, or perhaps impossible, to explain how to extend one's vision so that these techniques will prove useful. I suspect that one must already have both a full understanding of, and a deep dissatisfaction with, the traditional techniques of photography as a method of expressing one's vision. If that is true of a photographer, he or she is probably already thinking about how to change the form to express his or her vision. In that case, this volume might provide a few useful ideas.

Editorial Review:

Fine art quality, black-and-white prints are within every photographer's reach with the techniques illustrated in this digital image editing guide. Taking advantage of the control and reproducibility that the digital darkroom offers, this handbook teaches photographers how to fine-tune images with contrast and exposure levels, crop and rotate images for dynamic results, and remove flaws such as dust and scratches long after the photograph has been taken. Instruction on techniques that simulate traditional hand coloring and tinting and add special effects such as frames, infrared, and lighting and lens effects helps photographers realize their artistic vision. Screen shots and images guide readers through the presented techniques, allowing photographers to gauge their own results and anticipate the effects of the outlined corrections and enhancements on their own images. A gallery of the author's work provides inspiration for simulating—and improving upon—the chemical-based darkroom experience.

Essential for learning to create speical effects 5 out of 5 stars.
37 of 37 people found this review helpful.

This is an essential book for any photographer who wants to learn to how to create stunning photographic artwork by manipulating photos. A wide variety of unusual and spectacular effects are presented. The beautiful examples have really inspired me.

First it covers manipulating, hand coloring, scanning and even recycling mistakes made with time-zero Polaroid film. Then black and white infrared photography using filters, metering and flash is covered along with film processing and printing. Bleaching and toning are next including great sections on copper split toning, posterization effects and creating pseudo flesh tones. Then emulsion transfers are shown including silverprint and liquid light. These create some great effects on non-traditional surfaces.

Image transfers and emulsion lifts follow. You are shown how to used a slide printer to make a print, make a projection print and transfer images onto non-paper surfaces like glass or silk, even getting two prints from one. Lastly, Polaroid instant slide films, solarization, photo transfers and hand coloring are discussed in detail.

All the instructions are excellent and thorough, covering everything from loading the camera to choosing and developing the film. There are a few demonstrations, lots of examples and great troubleshooting sections for each technique.

The appendixes in the back are very helpful. They include paper selection and characteristics, instructions on working with a copystand and a list of suppliers. This is a wonderful book to help the photographer with some darkroom experience move on to create awesome special effects photos.

Editorial Review:

Using an illustrated step-by-step approach, this manual explores both new and traditional non-digital printmaking techniques. Experienced photographer and teacher Theresa Airey taps into the increasing popularity of techniques that enable photographers to experiment with and personalize their images, in some cases without expensive darkroom equipment. She demonstrates working with infrared and Poloroid Time Zero films, solarization, selective bleaching and toning, handcolouring, and image and emulsion transfer, as well as alternatives for printing on artist papers, wood, and glass. To make the book easier to use, the flaps open flat on the worktable, freeing the reader's hands.

A wonderful product with a warts-and-all approach 4 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Quite frankly, there isn't much for me to say; the reader from Milwaukee, August, 1998 pretty much covered it all, and I agree with everything that reviewer said. This was not something that was developed specifically as a photography project; it evolved naturally from Boris' work as an illustrator. In his earlier works, such as "The Fantastic Art of Boris Vallejo" and "Mirage," reference is made to his use of photo-referents as tools for his paintings. While his interest in photography stems from that, his primary concern with it is firmly rooted in the utilitarian sense of the photo as an intermediary tool in the creation of something else. That shows in this. In "Bodies" we find some prints which were always intended as showcase photos, some which were merely used to get the creative juices flowing, and some which were intended as intermediary tools, but which also happened to be of showcase quality.

Because Boris' photographic mentality is focused not so much on the end product, but on the process, we see a very organic, natural, frank, honest, and unpretentious presentation. Oh, it's not without flaws, but neither is the essence of humanity. I was so impressed with the package that I refused to buy the copy of the book I found in the store, which had been slightly manhandled (no doubt by giggling adolescents incapable of looking beyond the nude to the art within). I made them special order a copy so that I might have one that was pristine.

There was one other fun thing not touched on by any of the previous reviewers. As a longtime Boris fan, owner of all his previous books ("The Fantastic Art of Boris Vallejo," "Mirage," "Enchantment," and "Ladies") as well as numerous book covers and fantasy art calendars, I found it entertaining to play "Spot the Model." Though the majority of the photos were of the photographer's wife, bodybuilder and fantasy artist Julie Bell, certain faces and figures were instantly recognizable for having turned up as a god in a calendar, a noble savage on a book cover, a Greek femme fatale bringing to life a story by the artist's sister, Doris.

Jaded longtime photography pointy-heads may not learn anything new from this book, but there is something within that can make this book as enjoyable to them as to any longtime fan of the great illustrator. Boris simply has a deep and abiding love for the human form, and this collection is a celebration of that emotion and devotion. A celebration definitely worth attending.

Editorial Review:

A collection of sensual photographs from renowned fantasy artist Boris Vallejo, "Bodies", showcases the strength and beauty of the human body. 105 photos, 20 in color.

Worth the dough. 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I consider digital photography having 3 key components. The first is finding great scenes to photograph. Secondly is actually composing and exposing the photograph correctly. Lastly is digitally re-mastering the image to allow it to reveal all that the image is capable of. This book has answered all my PhotoShop questions regarding that third component and allowed me to exponentially raise the bar on my level of work and create professional quality results in minimal time. The book is very well instructed and very well rounded. If you need to quickly get "up to speed" with basic digital editing techniques and produce results that you previously commented "how did they do that?", this is the book for you. I rented it from the library but will be buying a personal copy for my own library.

Beginner's Photoshop 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This unpresuming book certainly won't blow you away with its' writing style. And in the unfortunate tradition of Photoshop books everywhere, it covers the same ground that many other books do (please! No more chapters on color correction!). Still, I find that I reach for this book first when I'm trying to remember how to do something like extract an object.

Let's face it, unlike the Kelby and Ames books, this one is really targeted for your friend with the point and shoot who wants to take their photography to a higher level by touching up their images. It's unlikely to really excite the pros on this board.

What I like about this book:

1) It's relatively concise. Most techniques demonstrated only take up two pages.
2) There is a very good chapter on image extraction (the reason I bought this book in the first place).
3) A good starting chapter if you've ever wanted to turn a photo into a painting.

What I don't like about this book:

1) Too much filler on techniques that have been covered in other books (see rant on color correction, above). Yes, I know everybody wants to write the complete text to using Photoshop. But I resent paying for a book where the first 1/3 is stuff that every other book covers.
2) Setting instructions are not nearly as complete as the Kelby and Ames books.
3) Target audience is below our level... this book has a tendency to talk down to it's reader. Read for example the differences in JPG and TIFF images. More filler. Sometimes I think publishers tell authors `we need a book 200 pages long'... even when the author only has 150 pages to teach you. The result is filler like this.

All in all, this book is worth the price IF you're just starting out with Photoshop or it covers a subject that you need an introduction to (painting images, for example).
