Obsessions and Fetishes as Captured in the Photography of Slava Mogutin 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

LOST BOYS, Slava Mogutin's first published monograph, sets out to shock and unveil the darker interstices of the lost youths who are the product of our urban moral decay. Mogutin was exiled form his native Russia for his 'malicious hooliganism with exceptional cynicism and extreme insolence', found his Gilead/asylum in the USA and has been highly visible as a performance artist and gay activist. This thin volume, with excessively wordy and pedantic verbal contributions by such luminaries as Octavio Zaya and Dominic Johnson, is a collection of Mogutin's photographs, basically of the male nude, but in Mogutin's case the nude figure is less important than the staged images he captures. In some images his thoughts are powerful: in some images there is little information and conflict that is supposed to illicit gut response from the viewer.

Slava Mogutin's 'models' (the word is used instead of subjects, but the youths brought into this mélange are minimally attractive or interesting) are Russian wrestlers, military cadets, German skinheads, and football jocks - some at rest, some staged with bizarre sexually oriented stories, and some pushing the limits of sensual behavior. Some of the photographs succeed in inciting a visceral response from the viewer, and some simply feel like filler.

That Slava Mogutin has something to say is obvious, especially if the Foreword and Essay are read prior to viewing the portfolio, but for this viewer there is less art and more social comment here, making this particular monograph difficult to assign in the very wide field of photographic art. Not a book for the squeamish but a viable statement from an exiled observer of some aspects of the human condition in this century. Grady Harp, December 07

Editorial Review:

Lost Boys, Slava Mogutin’s first monograph, is a compelling collection of his portraits and landscapes taken over the past ten years—since he was exiled from Russia for "malicious hooliganism with exceptional cynicism and extreme insolence." Although it was his outspoken gay writing that angered the Soviet authorities, Mogutin’s photographs caused just as much controversy. Provocative yet iconoclastic, his work transcends the conventions of male nude photography, confronting the viewer/voyeur with a raw style and new sensibility. A cross between porn and fashion, pop culture and marginal kink, Lost Boys is a poetic and sometimes raunchy journey into different obsessions and fetishes of the cosmopolitan urban youth culture. Crimean rasta boys, Russian wrestlers and military cadets, German skinheads, and football hooligans are among the subjects of these incendiary but intimate portraits.

Editorial Review:

The third in the Sydney photographer's acclaimed best-selling Bondi series of books, "in a market glutted with generic coffee-table tomes of vapid pretty boys, artist Paul Freeman brings a unique point of view to his exemplary collections.., magic combinations that he assembles in his sublime books of photos." (Advocate magazine )

Shot largely on location in sweaty workshops and factory environments, with the focus on the Aussie blue-collar worker, 'Bondi Work' continues, very much to our advantage, Freeman's fascination with capturing what is intrinsic to male beauty. "This book is beautiful. It's so great to see male nudes that are cool and strong and not just pussy." (celebrity photographer Tony Durran)

Following close on the heels of 'Bondi Urban', which portrayed lads of a surf and beach culture, Freeman's choice of models, the way he directs them into sharing intimate moments, his trademark use of dramatic lighting to elevate simple compositions, and his use of color, again infuses this work with a painterly romanticism. "Freeman searches for (and definitely finds!) subjects who are quintessentially masculine men. He uses his fellow countrymen (Australia) to show us the virile attitude of the untamed, knows how to make the partially clothed form even more sensuous than the fully nude form, and creates photographs that are well conceived and executed and presented in a superb format. For those looking for the best of the books of male photography, his deserve a place on top of the list!" ( Grady Harper , review December 2005).

Freeman styles, designs and publishes his own books, and a rapidly growing appreciative audience quickly bought out the first print run of Bondi Urban, while most of the first run of Bondi Work is pre-sold.

All three books in the Bondi series are similar large format, chic, hardbound, color & b/w collectibles, with over 216 pages of photographs reproduced on quality art paper.

Slicker Than The Shiny, Form-Fitting Latex Fashions Shown Inside 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a very well done book in which few production costs were spared other than perhaps not making the format a bit bigger so that the text wasn't almost too small to read. The book's cover is heavy black rubber with white lettering stamped deep into the cover itself. It is lavishly illustrated with slick color photos of the fetish scene by Petra Joy. It also includes pen and ink drawings. Alas, the book mostly reminds me of an erotic version of the "American Heritage Illustrated Dictionary." As the book's sales blurb (description) states, the material in the volume covers every facet of the the Fetish world "from Agalmatophilia (the desire to have sex with a mannequin) to Ophidicism (sexual arousal from snakes)." Unfortunately, I couldn't locate the material on Ophidicism anywhere in the volume's 144 pages, but there are so many different definitions, pictures, and drawings on each page that it really does seem like the reader is looking at an encyclopedia/dictionary. True to it's goal, it does define "Agalmatophilia" and while "Ophidicism" must have ended up on the cutting room floor and slithered out the door, the book does discuss most other less scientific terms used throughout the scene. Even "Violet Wand" is included along with a pen and ink drawing of what that electrical toy looks like. After straining my eyes reading the book, looking at its illustrations and wishing they were much larger, I felt like too much money was devoted to the rubber cover that should have gone to making the book a larger, almost Coffee Table Book. The publication lists a large editorial staff and it surprises this reviewer that they didn't notice the potential problems? They probably did, but had to compromise to reach the final product. Four stars is probably the correct rating for the publication because even with it's flaws it's a really slick, professional looking book that will probably supply more basic information about the language of the scene than almost anyone wants to know. Still in some cases, the reader is left to feel like not enough information is supplied on the more popular facets of Fetish. For those thirsty souls, the book does include a list of other sources of additional information. And for those readers into rubber, the cover may be like a message from heavenly sub-space. This reader is going to check the Internet for more delicious pictures by Petra Joy. Many of those included in this book showed great promise. The photographer has such a catchy name. Petra, Petra, isn't that the ancient city cut into the rock cliffs in Jordan where Indiana and his dad found the fountain of external life in "The Last Crusade?" In fact, maybe the next Jones sage should have the hero encountering the world of Ophidicism. As the Universe's most infamous bull whip aficionado, Dr. Han Solo Jones taming, or charming a bunch of horny female snake worshippers should provide a host of wonderful, kinky role-playing fantasies. He might even change his mind about hating snakes? This book is a good, very basic introduction to the various forms and language of fetish, but it doesn't mention a Dr. Jones. Whips, paddles, riding crops, canes, yes, Jones or even "The Devil and Miss Jones," no.

hot....crazy hot. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

it showcases my two favorite things in this world - graffiti and girls. combine the two, and you get graffiti on scantly dressed girls. i say son, does it get much better that this?... i think not. Flava!

Editorial Review:

Fetish Bubblegirls presents the work of internationally recognized graffiti artist Tilt in an unabashedly new, colorful, and playful volume. Graffiti has always been an inherently dangerous, high-wire act - the execution of art in risky, often illegal situations. And one could argue for a strong parallel that exists between the classic graffiti writing s extensive use of bubbly, curvaceous shapes and the female form. The French born graf writer obsessively explores these tensions and parallels in Fetish Bubblegirls as he explores the world in search of beautiful young canvases on which to execute his art. Although this mission straddles the globe, there is a common thread that emerges as the most striking detail of the project - the openness and balance between innocence and playfulness and sexuality and the highly charged environment that all of the models inhabit. Tilt is a member of the all-star French artists collective Le Club .

Best book of the African male in five years! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is an astounding volume of nude and semi-nude photography of the African male. The first book by Willibrod Haas to be widely available in the U.S. and Europe, it clearly marks his work as the standard by which all other photographers -- of models of any race -- must be judged. The technical quality of the images are absolutely impeccable. Superb! It is so difficult to photograph black models: The quality and quantity of light, exposures, and the wide variation in skin tones makes it exceptionally hard. Yet, Haas brings it off. The printing is excellent, and the binding good. My only quibble is that this should have been a big, oversize, 11"x17" coffee-table book and not the standard volume it is.

Some interesting artistic photography interspersed with too-obvious cover-ups 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

"Exposure" presents an expanded compilation of what Sports Illustrated called the "All-Star SI Cover Model Beach Party" in its 2006 Swimsuit Issue. The photo shoot by Raphael Mazzucco took place in the Bahamas, and featured eight past SI swimsuit cover models, the most famous being Elle MacPherson, Rachel Hunter, Rebecca Romijn and Daniela Pestova. Overall it's good photographic work, and every collector of these swimsuit issues will no doubt have favorites among the eight models.

There are over 100 photos, color and b&w, that range from cleverly artistic to "eh, whatever." Many of the photos are taken right from the Swimsuit Issue, but are enlarged to fit the book's not-quite-double the magazine's size. The girls look great and are dressed in various forms of white bikinis (fashion credits listed in the back of the book).

The one glaring problem I found with this compilation (hence the 3 stars) is that what was supposed to look like a fun-filled frolic (au naturel, sort of) on the beach too many times comes across as a bunch of really self-conscious models unsubtly covering themselves up. Perhaps the girls had a contractual agreement not to be photographed bare-chested, or maybe it was SI's unwillingness to be Playboy-ish, but I think there are better ways to limit such exposure without being so pronounced. I could almost hear the photographer: "Okay everybody, hands over your breasts please!" To me, the artistic direction made these photos restrained at best, and just plain goofy at worst. Believe it or not, I would have rated this book a star or two higher had these pictures been left out(!) since the swimsuits are made to bring out the best in a model's figure (right?). Fortunately, many of the remaining images are awesome in terms of the artistry of capturing beauty(ies) and the beach. It's a good book, just not a great one.

Editorial Review:

But it did happen, at Harbour Island in the Bahamas - a reunion of cover girls, Rachel Hunter, Rebecca Romijn, Daniela Pestova, Ell MacPherson, Yamila Diaz-Rahi, Elsa Benitez, Veronica Varekova and Carolyn Murphy. Presented here for the first time, in a lavish coffee-table volume, are hundreds of images from that spectacular trip to the beach - a set of photos so revealing that you will never see them anywhere else.

Pictures were fantastic as far as I could see. Was a gift, but had to peruse it a bit of course before I wrapped it up. Was dissapointed that the book came with a crease throughout the corner of the whole book. It was packaged well, so I'm sure it happened prior to shipping. Was cheeper than new, but was still not happy.

Editorial Review:

Tom Bianchi's classics in an omnibus volume - the defi nitive collection!

ON THE COUCH Volume 1 landed like a bombshell and has remained on the bestseller lists of gay bookstores to this day. In April 2004 Volume 2 followed and upped the ante for Bianchi's works. Now countless fans of the American artist can enjoy the newest high-quality book of photography that brings these two works together. It's an unbeatable proposition! A variety of men alone, in pairs or groups drop all their inhibitions and fully let themselves go in a play of unbridled lust and seething passion. Bianchi's imagery is a unique balance of erotic content and artistic expression.

reality-erotica: seventies style 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

A welcome contrast to the overly studied and glamourized coffee-table porn books of late, this book contains images from the notorious seventies underground erotic quaterly.
edited from a unique series of magazines that featured the Mythic sex appeal of seemingly ordinary black men. Produced during the height of the black exploitation period, these images may be hard to look at during our current P.C. times. However, as a historical artifact of seventies pop culture and sexual liberation, it's an interesting item. The complete lack of sophisticated art direction is precisely it's strength. The garish interiors and un-polished men are period perfect. This work did not share mr. mapplethorpe's ultra refined visual taste and obsessive eye for artistic details. Museums and galleries were not the intended targets......it was all about arousal. Direct and immediate....for anyone who had a particular fondness for a specific type of ebony brother.

Defunct Third World Studio Opens It Vault, Volume 1 5 out of 5 stars.

Images are arranged by color rendition, instead of by model: Black & white (b&w) to page 64, then color through the end at page 128. Ron, also known as (aka) "Outlaw," for example, is on pp. (pages) 12-13 in b&w and in color on pp. 65-67 & 100-101. There is no text after the Introduction and no captions identifying the models. In case you are wondering if any of your favorite models are included, I also recognized Angelo, Barry, Clayton or "Clay," Francoise, Mack, Mario Albert, Mark, Mickey (cover), 'Rone, "Sputnik," "Taurus," Ty aka Jack, Vic and Warren. A lot of others are shown, but I do not know their names. Many of the photo's have been circulating for years on the Internet, which is where I associated their names/aliases, but the 'net pictures have usually been degraded as cropped, thumbnailed, low resolution, etc. I was glad to see the picture of Clay(ton) in the book, although in black & white, because the color image that has circulated on the 'net is stretched sideways and the book's image is the first time that I have seen the picture without distortion. On the other hand, some of the photo's I have never seen before; to me, I think the book would still be worthwhile even if I had seen all the photo's before. Overall, the photo's are usually not cropped, often showing too much background, but better too much than not enough. The emphasis is on full, frontal nudity. Some rear views are shown, but are usually given lesser importance as one of two or more photo's on a page, instead of a full page. Likewise, there are only a few portraits without full nudity, front or rear; I did not add any portraits as Customer Images (being suitable without nudity) because they are not as representative of the book's content as much as the cover. The publisher's website already shows "sold out" for this title, so do not wait any longer if you want a new copy, as stock at the U.S. distributor in New Jersey may be all that remains. The South Africa (.za) Janssen website also shows a "2006 Preview" thumbnail of a sequel, "Mr. Long," with Francoise on the cover, calling it "...the final continuation," but ISBN "to follow."

verstile book, not really my style 3 out of 5 stars.
15 of 28 people found this review helpful.

i love erotic phtography but i have to say this is not the greatest example for such a book.

the book show a veraity of phtographers with good CV and information, which's always nice to now, it's printed very well and is in really good quality and design. from that angle i have to say - it's better them most books i came across, my problems withit are mostly with editing and choice of photos. the book's sepearted in 4 diffrent chategories which i didn't see much diffrence between, most photos could appeare in all chapters (dadicated to - fetishwear, diciplane, bondage and extream play)., i would much rather have it seperated to artist rather then those sections. also a lot of those photos seem cheap to me, a lot of the models are playboy material (so not my kind of woman) and there's far too much skin and latex rather then anything interesting artisticly.

it's a good turn-on book, too bad it's shallow and not intelectualy stimulating as well as physicly.

Editorial Review:

Sex - Take A Walk On The Wild Side looks at what is happening on the boundary lines between what has just arrived and what is coming next - and it does so through the eyes of around 40 talented photographers who bring a wide range of experiences and viewpoints to their chosen subject matter and expose their work through every kind of visual medium. Fetishism, bondage and sadomasochism are prime examples of previously taboo areas of sexuality that are now being re-evaluated by mainstream society. In the last couple of decades, the depiction of these subjects has become of increasing interest to legitimate photography, and the effect of this has been to regale us with much better quality images as well as to remove stigma, both from the portrayal and from the interests themselves. Ultimately of course, it's all down to personal taste - it's whatever turns you on. Prepare to be stimulated, surprised, perhaps even shocked. Prepare for a walk on the wild side.

SG Madness 5 out of 5 stars.

As a fan of Suicide Girls from the beginning, I found this book to be an instant collectors classic.

The girls are of course hot, but the writting they give is some of the most insightful thoughts you'll read for a long time.

Most people just look at a pierced, tattooed girl as nothing more than someone with issues. This book sets all that straight. Very good reading as well as more eye candy that you can stand.
Very much worth the price.
