100 Photographs that changed the world can only be described as an intimate and emotional view of our world over the last century. The book was created by Time magazine, many of the photos coming straight from their covers. Many of the pictures are published elsewhere and have no doubt been seen by many people, but having them put together in this fashion is amazing. Complete with date and description, you find yourself having a little history lesson without even knowing it. Every page is readable and interesting, it will definitely keep your attention.

There are pictures from "The Arts", "Science and Nature", "Society", and "War and Peace". Beginning with the first photo ever taken and moving on to amazing things like the ex-ray that allowed to discovery of the double helix in our DNA. There are also many controversial issues such as lynching in the south, and young black students being sprayed by a fire hose; showing just how horrible slavery and racism really has been in America. There are pictures of the many starving children from other countries with their tiny arms and legs and huge bellies created from the horrible conditions that they live in every day. There is no question that many of these photos are hard to look at, but they force you to face the reality of our unjust world. They document some of the many mistakes we have made in the last 100 years and all that we have learned from them. It also includes groundbreaking photos such as the first picture taken of a baby inside of a mothers womb, the very first photo of the earth from the surface of the moon, and JFK's assassination. They are undeniably breath taking, heart breaking, and thought provoking. Even if all of these pictures did not actually change the world. They definitely changed the way we view the world. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, there are simply not enough words to describe the power and emotion contained in these photographs.

This book is simply a must have for any library. Young or old, it is a book that you will undoubtedly pull from the shelf many times. Definitely the kind of book that parents should look at with their children to help them learn about history. I'm sure the pictures will provoke questions and curiosity from both sides, and it is a great way to learn together. It is the kind of book that you can pass on through generations of your family and it will be just as valuable to them as it is to us. We are so lucky to have to opportunity to be able to document our lives with pictures, which has only been possible for about the last hundred years. We need to take advantage of such a wonderful opportunity. Don't pass up the chance to own a book that is this powerful.

I am sorry I bought this book. It was written by a college professor for students, readers that have no choice but to buy the book, and it reads that way. The author does not use his own vision and voice to criticize and to explain criticism but instead relies on a survey of methods used by critics. The writing was wooden, and the book had an overwhelming emphasis on staged, "arty" photographs. I could not bring myself to finish this book and have given it to my local library for their book sale.

A wonderful history of early photography 4 out of 5 stars.

Stieglitz - Camera Work is an extract of the photographs that appeared in the Camera Work magazine that Stieglitz created and edited. The photographs chart the history and change in photographic styles from pictorialist to the straight photography of Paul Strand. As such it is a historical document to the changing style of the medium. However, more than that it shows many accomplished photographers and their work that is truly refreshing even by today's standards. The size of the book is quite nice, portable but also large enough that it will take time to work through it all and enjoy the pictures. The essay on Stieglitz and his motivations and involvement in the photographic scene of his day and his importance even then is also quite interesting. He was (and is) a real giant of the photographic world. I "only" gave 4 stars because the book is not available in hard cover, and there is a big 25 year anniversary image on the book spine. I don't much like advertising things like that on my bookshelf, and as the book was issued in 2008 (and Taschen's 25th anniversary was in 2005 or 2007) I don't quite get why they are branding this book like that. Still, a sterling effort on their part. Print reproduction quality is excellent.
For who is this book? For photographic artists, people interested in photographic history, as well as photographers who are looking to the past for a way to refresh and invigorate their photography.

Photographer, writer, publisher, and curator Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) was a visionary, far ahead of his time. Around the turn of the 20th century he founded the Photo-Secession, a progressive movement concerned with advancing the creative possibilities of photography, and by 1903 began publishing "Camera Work", an avant-garde magazine devoted to voicing the ideas, both in images and words, of the Photo-Secession. "Camera Work" was the first photo journal whose focus was visual, rather than technical, and its illustrations were of the highest quality hand-pulled photogravure printed on Japanese tissue. I read this book over 16 years ago. It left a lasting impression that will stay with me forever. It may not have the same affect on others but reading some of the reviews posted here, I know that it has on most. You can't really ask somebody "did this really happen?" becuase they either died then or in the 100 years that have past. We have no perspective on these people, places and times other than to read books like this. If any of these folks were alive today and heard someone say, "those were the good old days." They might be inclined to give the speaker a quick education. This book will do it for them. I have pictures just like this in a family archive. You wonder how anybody lived into middle or old age. Disease, starvation, hypothermia, and farm accidents all took their toll. Winters are hard enough in the south. Why did these people decide to stop the wagon in Wisconsin or if they lived thru their first winter there, why didn't they head south? I went to a Brewers baseball game at the end of May some 25 years ago and wore a down parka and was cold. You can still see houses in small towns outside of Milwaukee that look like the houses in this book and you can feel the desolation, pain and suffering looking out at you thru 100 year old panes of glass.

I read Snowflake Bently to a group of four year old children. They loved the idea that it was a true story. The next day I presented this book and the kids couldn't get enough.

This book about lived up to my expectations -- which wouldn't make it worth it for everybody. In our case, we were doing a unit study on snowflakes and we covered Bentley's biography (from children's picture books for the young ones to more complete adult biographies for the older) and the point of this book for us was simply to see what it was that he did. I explained to my first grader that the large camera he had was also very young in terms of the history of photography and that what he accomplished was marvelous for his time. I also explained that today's equipment is able to do so much more. We turned to Libbrecht'sThe Snowflake-- being from Caltech he's probably a good one to take up the cause and the photos are incredible. My first grader loved them so much that we ended up getting the calendar, Snowflakes 2008 Calendar: Featuring the amazing micro-photography of Kenneth Libbrecht (Calendar). The high school student was more interested in the text, and I loved both.

Since I was familiar with Bentley's photos I knew I was buying this one for historical interest to go along with the biographies and not for anything more -- therefore, I didn't experience any disappointment for it perhaps not being as good as other books mentioned.

However disappointed with the use of many words and chapters....

I feel it should be more "general" and geared for my "useful" korean words.

However, when learning Korean... the options are limited...

This book was meant for Koreans learning English but the Korean words are under the English words so you can use it both ways. You might think a picture dictionary is for kids but this one is for grown-ups and is VERY well laid out by category. There are quite a lot of words illustrated including verbs, prepositions and nouns as well as adjectives.

If you're even remotely interested in photography and its development, this book is a wonderful way to learn about it. It details the emergence of all the important photographic processes with just enough technical detail to be interesting and not so much as to be overwhelming. There are many pictures in it that provide examples and show how images changed over the years. It also includes the personal aspects of this history and how photography has affected our culture. The writing is smooth and easy to read. In short, I highly recommend it; you won't be disappointed.

As a student, I was forced to buy this book during my 2 year tenure at photography school. It remains one of the most comprehensive, detailed and well written references on the history of photography. History books can be a little "dry" to read but this one is exceptionally well written and covers a vast amount of ground in an admirable fashion.

I can't remember the first time I read this book, decades ago. Although it's quite dated in light of the advancements in digital photography in recent years, this is still the first reference to check for information about the first 140 years of photography. Even with Wikipedia available, this is the book I check for information. I happened to live in Rochester near the end of his time as curator of George Eastman House, and got to see first hand his influence on the medium. Newhall's book will remain on my shelf for as long as I am interested in photography.

"Art and Photography" surveys a rich and important history, from the 1960s to the 21st century. Arranged thematically, it presents works by the most significant international artists who have explored and extended the boundaries of photography. This influential body of work by over 160 artists over four decades is contextualised in the "Documents" section by original artist's statements and interviews, as well as lucid reflections on photography by major thinkers of our era such as Roland Barthes and Jean Baudrillard. Today photography is art's pre-eminent medium. Photography pervades our visual culture. It has become what painting was in previous centuries: a universal language. Today's photographers are internationally admired as "the painters of modern life". Yet, it took the whole of the 20th century for photography to reach this status. On its invention, the photograph was derided as a purely mechanical, "artless" medium which could never be considered among the fine arts. As the 20th century unfolded, Modernist movements experimented with the photograph and expanded its limits, yet still the art establishment held out. Only recently have the majority of art museums begun acquiring works of photography. In 1976, when the Museum of Modern Art, New York - one of the first institutions to collect photographs - staged a retrospective of the American colour photographer William Eggleston, this was a groundbreaking event: it was the first time colour photography had been exhibited, as art, in a major museum. This moment in the 1970s marked a dramatic sea change, but the tides had begun to turn in the early 1960s, when artists such as Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha and Gerhard Richter used the everyday, mass-produced quality of the snapshot as a basis for their work.
