Improving Your Technique 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Chris Bucher's Lighting-Photoworkshop book is a great guide for any photographer looking to learn understanding and controlling lighting in photography. It starts you off with the very basics of lighting and works you in to more advanced techniques. Anyone can take a picture, but understanding where your light is coming from and how to use it separates the good from the bad.
This book starts you off with the technical side of lighting so you can fully understand what you are doing. It then explains almost every lighting situation (a bright sunny day, an overcast day or even artificial lighting) you can encounter and how to use certain things to your advantage. It also explains specific examples from anything to nature to people photography. I found myself excited to try the assignments and apply them towards my photography.
As a graduate from the Brooks Institute of Photography, this book was a great refresher course in a lot of the lighting techniques I have learned. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to take their photography to the next level.

Editorial Review:

A rigorous practical guide to photographic lighting techniques, complete with hands-on assignments

Offering digital photographers a complete course in photographic lighting, this book covers everything from using flash systems and studio lights to working outdoors in bright or low-light conditions. Full-color examples show how the right lighting can enhance color, improve contrast, and open the door to new creative possibilities.

Utterly Useless 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have to agree with anybody who has a negative review about this book. The author clearly wanted only to portray his "artwork" and make money off it by writing this useless book. Even a novice photographer like myself could get nothing worth while out of it. I am extremely disappointed in my purchase and I wasted a lot of money considering I have not even a handful of new knowledge to show for it. If you want to "learn" and get your moneys worth than I suggest spending your dollar on any of the Amherst Media books.

Editorial Review:

Aimed at photographers who pack away their cameras as soon as light levels fall, this brilliant book shows how, with just a little skill and imagination, even amateurs can produce breathtaking photographs in nighttime or low-light settings. The guide begins with a clear explanation of technical aspects that must be considered, such as the best equipment to use for low-light indoor or nighttime outdoor shots, which color and black-and-white films to choose, how to ensure correct exposure in tricky situations, and details relating to both natural and artificial light. The book then tackles a wide range of themes and lighting situations, presenting specific guidance for shooting low-light landscapes, portraits, buildings, carnivals, fireworks displays, and weather phenomena such as lightning, sunrises, and sunsets.

Editorial Review:

Few cinematographers have had as decisive an impact on the cinematic medium as John Alton. Best known for his highly stylized film noir classics T-Men, He Walked by Night, and The Big Combo, Alton earned a reputation during the 1940s and 1950s as one of Hollywood's consummate craftsmen through his visual signature of crisp shadows and sculpted beams of light. No less renowned for his virtuoso color cinematography and deft appropriation of widescreen and Technicolor, he earned an Academy Award in 1951 for his work on the musical An American in Paris. First published in 1949, and long out of print since then, Painting With Light remains one of the few truly canonical statements on the art of motion picture photography, an unrivalled historical document on the workings of the postwar, American cinema. In simple, non-technical language, Alton explains the job of the cinematographer and explores how lighting, camera techniques, and choice of locations determine the visual mood of film. Todd McCarthy's introduction, written especially for this edition, provides an overview of Alton's biography and career and explores the influence of his work on contemporary cinematography.

How to capture and control light to make the best digital photographs.

Light is the essence of photography. Follow master photographer Rick Sammon at dawn in Kenya or nighttime in Miami as he demonstrates how to achieve the best composition with the available light, which camera settings are best suited to existing conditions, and how to obtain the best exposures in challenging situations. Sammon shows how to make photographs instead of just taking them, providing the tools necessary to take artistic command of the images you create. Drawing on intuitive analogies and technical tips, his in-depth lessons on light apply to every style and subject of photography.

In this beginner-to-intermediate-level guide, Sammon also teaches how to "rescue" potentially imperfect exposures with the resources available to the digital SLR camera owner. Technical exposure information accompanies the book's images where relevant. 428 color photographs.

A good beginning book 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is a good starter book. It begins with basics of lighting and begins to introduce more and more complicated setups.

It helped me understand the basics of lighting equipment and how to use them and this is particularly true for some of the initial lighting arrangements in both the womens and the mens sections.

My biggest criticism of the book is that it great to learn the craft, but not the art. Do not expect that this is your last lighting book if you're going to be serious about fashion and beauty photography.

My key takeaways were basic lighting arrangements for women and men, reliance on makeup artists, and basics of equipment. It's a good way to learn by copying---"If you want a shot like this, do this". The "cookbook" phrase in the title is a very correct claim. It will not teach you how to create a new recipe, but if you know what you need, it will tell you how to make it.

There's a show-offy feel to some sections which I could do without.

Someone who reads this book will be able to then move on to more sophisticated portraiture books like Grecco's Lighting and the Art of the Dramatic Portrait. I found it far easier to understand subtleties in Grecco's book after I had thoroughly read the cookbook a few times.

Editorial Review:

Learning to set up, use, and control lighting is the biggest challenge for photographers in the field of fashion and beauty. Never fear! This book shows exactly how to become a lighting master. Dozens of stunning examples - some taken in the studio, others on location - are analyzed with setup details, lens choices, composition decisions, and lighting diagrams, plus step-by-step directions on re-creating the look. From an inventory of every essential piece of equipment, with a full explanation of how, when, and why to use each one, to an in-depth discussion of film versus digital formats, the "Lighting Cookbook for Fashion and Beauty Photography" is the complete guide to mastering this popular and lucrative genre.
