Editorial Review:

The serious amateur photographer often faces the problem that even after all the dollars spent on camera, lenses, computer gear, and software, the spending never seems to end. More gear is needed for studio photography, tabletop photography, flash photography, and for accessories here and there. And in many cases, the right accessories are not even available. That is where this book comes in. Low Budget Shooting is the one-stop source where you will find instructions and a shopping list on how to build an array of useful and inexpensive photographic tools.

Filled with full-color images and easy-to-follow text, this book shows how to build essential lighting and studio equipment; how to make the perfect light-table for shooting small objects; and how to build reflectors, soft-boxes, and light-tents that really work. It also tells where to get some of the little helpers that make a photographer's life so much easier. This clever little book is a creative and valuable resource for most any photographer.

Nothing New 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I expected more information, specifically on modeling, composition, and selecting locations for outdoor portraiture based on the goal one is trying to achieve.

Also, would have been handy if it included (with pictures) different techniques to overcome physical shortcomings. Unfortunately, not everyone looks beautiful in a two-piece bikini. With a little small talk I try to attain subject's insecurities, I then photograph them in ways were I enhance their best features and reduce focus on the areas of insecurity. It would have been nice to review the techniques of others, compare, experiment, and incorporate some.

Limited by having 128 pages and 15 photographers profiled. Next time dedicate 150 pages with the input of 5 top photographers.

Editorial Review:

Featuring 15 of the industry's top photographers, among them Monte Zucker, Michael Ayers, Dave Newman, and Kathleen Hawkins, this guide teaches professional photographers how to capture the most flattering views of the female form—and appeal to their largely female clientele—through careful lighting and posing. This reference emphasizes how from the very start of the process, certain techniques should be employed to create high quality images, such as using light to enhance a beautiful face and employing shadow and light to downplay any of the subject's percieved flaws or insecurities. With 36 detailed lighting and posing diagrams illustrating how to re-create the work of the pros, this handbook reveals numerous ways to create a technically flawless, saleable portrait of a female client.

Great ideas for better portraits 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Taking portraits is a hobby of mine. I have a studio set up in my house. The author has really good ideas for improving portraits. Although I already have about 6 other books on portraiture, I'm learning good things from this book. He shares simple tips from his years of experience. It's better than most of the other books I've already got. Many examples of poses are given which I am finding helpful.

Editorial Review:

With easy-to-follow instructions and detailed photo sequences showing how to arrange lights and lighting accessories, this carefully structured course teaches all the fundamentals of portraiture, as well as a host of other creative techniques. It sets out everything the amateur needs to know to create a wide range of styles, from choosing the right equipment to composing the background to placing and positioning the subject for maximum effect. The basics of color and black and white, digital capture and film, and studio and location shooting all receive detailed attention, and helpful tips on mood-enhancing lighting will help raise novices’ skills to professional levels.

Lighting Bible? Definitely NOT 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book does not live up to it's title. If you are looking for a technical reference book to all aspects of studio lighting, lighting equipment, technology and techniques then you will be disappointed.
This book gives simple examples of different subjects and genres with nice photo's and a basic description of the lighting setup involved.
I'm only an amateur and found this book disappointing as I thought I'd find all my answers and learning in one book. I'm going to have to purchase individual books on studio lighting get the technical help I was looking for.

Editorial Review:

Lighting is a fundamental concern for the studio photographer, and The Studio Photographer’s Lighting Bible explores lighting from every angle. This book explains all the commercial, practical, technical, and creative issues to identify how studio photographers can work successfully with other professionals and make the best and most creative lighting choices in their work. Interviews with lighting specialists from other disciplines, including theater, film, concerts, and galleries, as well as stylists, photographer’s assistants, make-up artists, and picture editors, give the photographer innovative ideas and the understanding needed to work as part of a team. Case studies with showcase images and lighting diagrams, plus information specific to the main photographic market, make The Studio Photographer’s Lighting Bible a must-have for every working photographer.

This is must reading for those interested in cinematography. 5 out of 5 stars.
31 of 31 people found this review helpful.

Kris Malkiewicz has assembled some of the finestcinematographers and gaffers in the world to create a must-have bookfor all aspiring and working Directors of Photography. This book is both technical and creative in description of design and technique. From Nestor Almendros, ASC to Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC and other contemporary greats in-between--the reader learns lighting of sets, close-ups, background plates and much more. Both soft-light and hard-light techniques are covered too. Reading the meter is discussed by Caleb Deshanel, ASC who states, "Basically I use the meter after I have finished lighting" to Malkiewicz who states, "a caucasian face has about 35 percent reflectance, but a black face reflects less than 16 percent." He goes on to explain the proper technique for exposing dissimilar facial colors with reflective metering. The late James Wong Howe, ASC and Jordan Cronenweth, ASC are quoted describing their day-for-night techniques. All in all this book covers the basics and beyond and has served me well as a reference book that I consult from time to time, and recommend to others.

Big disappointment 1 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This book was a BIG disappointment. The first Chapter: The Basics consists of 86 so called tips about the camera. It is more of a dictionary of photographic terms sometimes with illustrations. The following Chapters: Characteristics of Light, Working with Daylight, Artifical Lighting, Lighting Setups and Postproduction Lighting are not much better, what is presented is very elementary. If you have no ideal what aperture is or what a ring flash looks like this book is for you. But otherwise skip it.

Great Instructional Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has indepth but easy to understand guidlines and instructions for high key photography. I would recommend it highly.

Editorial Review:

Photographers will learn from a master the impact and beauty that can be created through the precision creation of high key portraits. In photography, the word key is used to describe the overall tonal range in which the photograph is created—including the background, subject, props, and clothing. If the tones are very light, the image is called “high key.“ Because photographers often neglect to consider the impact of creating images in a controlled key, many portraits fall short of their potential. This book provides helpful guidelines for selecting the best lighting equipment and light modifiers for efficiently creating high key portraits, as well as detailing techniques needed to select the perfect clothes and props for a high key portrait.
