Delightful book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I needed to find a well-illustrated book on Seashells for an overseas friend. I know nothing about seashells, so I was a bit apprehensive how my first purchase with Amazon would turn out.

I need not have worried. The book was delivered within 48 hours and I was able to read it myself, before it went to Thailand with me. I was delighted with the book.

The recipient, a government Marine Biologist was thrilled.

I thoroughly recommend this book to anybody and everybody.

Editorial Review:

Artist Josie Iselin celebrates the diversity and beauty of nature with her exquisite portraits of seashells. Like her extremely popular Beach Stones and Leaves & Pods, Seashells is not a field guide but an artful and informative portrayal of a beloved part of our natural world. The book balances the exotic with the familiar, from tropical corals and rare fossils to everyday clamshells and barnacles. In her introduction and captions, marine geologist and paleontologist Sandy Carlson introduces the reader to seashells in all their variety, explaining why they look as they do. Both an art book and a contemplation of nature, Seashells combines aesthetic delight in natural things with scientific fact and philosophical wonder.

Fabulous Felines share their philosophy with us. 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 13 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the most beautifully done books I have seen in a very long time. The cover alone is worth the price of the book with a feline "Cindy Crawford" adorned in a "real" jeweled collar in a true Hollywood glamour puss pose.
And it only gets better inside the cover. The subjects are some of the most enchanting furry gods and goddesses this side of heaven. Their personalities just jump off the pages and when they share their feline wisdom in everything from behavior, "Don't whisper when you can roar", beauty tips "Remember that good lighting is more important than good genes" and fashion "Embrace your irrational love of shoes" we realize that we can indeed learn much from them.
As a cat lover and owner of three felines with their own attiutdes, I could not resist reading this book from cover to cover (easy to do as it is about 60 pages) the minute I got it.
This book is a must have for any or all cat lovers or just anybody who appreciates great photography and very errudite wisdom.

Editorial Review:

It's Sex & the City meets All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat. This compendium of sassy advice from felines to females might make you think your cat has gotten hold of Carrie Bradshaw's computer. In Cattitude, cats are finally dishing out their savvy secrets.

"Accept your body. Augment your ego." "Make immediate gratification your mantra." "Remember good lighting is more important than good genes." "Get yourself an entourage." Although we may not know for sure what goes on in the feline mind, the clever pairing of images by noted pet photographer Kim Levin and text by Christine Montaquila in this irresistible gift book-embellished with a glamorous faux rhinestone-studded cover-leaves little doubt. Cattitude celebrates the brazen feline in all women, encouraging them to keep their claws sharp and their self-esteem high.

Horse Show Mom's Guide To Photography 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is great for beginners! Easy to read. Every horse show mom should read it. It does a good job of correcting beginner problems. I also liked the "typical" photography section that outlined the usual shots taken in the industry and the model horse study. Like I said before, this book is a great book for beginners. You could also benefit if you are an advanced photographer and don't know much about horse photography. I would not recommend it to someone who has a good deal of both photography and horse experience though. They would probably find it too simplistic.

Editorial Review:

An easy-to-use guide to help you set up and capture flattering images of horses.

Editorial Review:

The Monks of New Skete have been breeding, raising, and training German Shepherds for more than thirty years at their Cambridge, New York, monastery. Their perennial bestseller, How to Be Your Dog’s Best Friend, is considered a classic in the dog-training field. First published in 1978, and completely revised and updated in 2002, the book has brought the Monks international acclaim for their successful mixture of discipline and love. Their second book, The Art of Raising a Puppy, was also a bestseller. Together, the two titles have sold close to one million copies.

Now, the Monks of New Skete reflect on the amazing bond that dogs and their owners share in the lavishly illustrated gift book, I & DOG. Celebrating this special relationship through words and images, the Monks offer a simple message: we could do worse than to learn from dogs – about ourselves, about our spirituality, and about God.

Taking readers on an eloquent exploration of the profound attachment between human and dog, this 80-page hardcover book features inspirational passages from the Monks of New Skete combined with more than fifty spectacular black and white and color images taken by talented photographers John Sann and Monique Stauder. Distilling all the wisdom and insight that the Monks have gained over the years living with and training these special creatures, this beautiful book pays homage to our extraordinary connection with our dogs.

In keeping with their philosophy, the Monks stress that love grows through respect, understanding and nurturing, and that it is humans’ responsibility to listen and learn from our canine partners.

Another fine book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is another fine book put together by Tony Sweet and an excellent compliment to "Fine Art Nature Photography".Tony does a nice job explaining what , why and how he made the photos . With many of the photos I understood what he did and found myself asking "Great idea ,But what if I try this or tweak that"

What more can one ask for then to be shown the possibilities and have their imagination expanded at the same time.

This is another fine addition to his credit and my collection.

review water,ice,fog 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This and his accompaying books in the series are superb. He not only provides an explanation of the technique he employed to create the image, but often also explains the composition or artistic "merit" of the photo. This particular book helps you transcend from mere "photo realism" or "documentary" photography, to the "abstract" where you can look even at the mundane with a new perspective, a new vision and a new appreciation. The world becomes more "fun" and perhaps more emotionally evoking. While most of the photos were created with film (vs. digital) the instruction is such that translation to the digital world is straightforward, and effective. As you read the text and study the photos, Mr Sweet encourages you to think of why, when and how you would apply the techniques to your own photography. I know that my own skills "jumped" a level after even the first
reading of this book.

Editorial Review:

Streams, lakes, rain, ice, mist, and fog provide the photographer with a wealth of opportunities to make great images. In this inspirational how-to book illustrated with some 70 stunning colour photos, master photographer Tony Sweet explains how to make the most of those opportunities. With a focus on sharpening the skills of interpretation, he shows how to create beautiful photographs of water in all its forms.

Good for entertaining hobbyists, but more detailed info would be better. 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Overall I give the collection 4 stars for all that it does well - even though it is not entirely what I had hoped it would be. This is a good collection for entertaining people interested in cannabis, but it is not as informational as I had hoped it would be.

I was hoping for something that would share more useful information about different strains of cannabis: growing characteristics, preferred growing mediums and environments, indoor-outdoor height, potency, nutrient preferences, etc. I keep hoping somebody will produce something like a world wide seed catalog, but written by unbiased connoisseurs and growers who are personally experienced with growing the various strains and with their medical properties and effects.

On the positive side: The photography was great and there were some really interesting articles in the books as well. Also, the price is fantastic for all that you are getting, and the presentation value is very good (including the nice slip case).

One major drawback for me however was how repetitively the author constantly preaches about how "outdoor organically grown" cannabis is so universally superior to every other possible growing alternative. It's fine that he believes that so adamantly, but I didn't feel I needed to hear those same beliefs repeatedly hammered home on virtually every single page of the book(s) and I was really tired of hearing about it only halfway through the first book.

Editorial Review:

This is a three-volume mini-edition "greatest hits" set packing the best of the fresh from the popular "Cannabible" series, contained in a slick-looking slipcase box and shrinkwrapped. It features full-colour photography of hundreds of cannabis types, accompanied by notes on flavours, aromas and effects. The series has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide.

The finest Grand Canyon book at the lowest price.... 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is so awesome, and of such high quality, that its Amazon price seems surreal...I have two copies and am ordering a third, for posterity or whatever.

Intensely beautiful photographic prints, at the very leading edge of Canyon photos....almost beyond description!

If you buy one copy of this book, you'll then want another for a gift, and another for your own collection.....etc.

off the charts superb stunning startling good heavens 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Yes, you would expect truly astounding photography here, and you get exactly that, in lots of different flavors too, but the stories are deft and revealing -- far more than in a book of photos alone of a place that you couldn't take a bad photo if you tried. Trimble himself is a master craftsman with the camera, but his service here is to gather some really remarkable work and voices into a tome that anyone who has gaped and prayed there will want to paw through before you get major brownie points for giving it to someone else. Terrific work.

Editorial Review:

One of the most photographed subjects on earth, the Grand Canyon continues to inspire awe, admiration, and frustration for those who attempt to capture its majesty with a camera. Reaching back 125 years into the photographic record of the Canyon, this book artfully explores the experiences of the earliest photographers as well as today's most exceptional artists through intriguing narrative and exceptional photography.

Not as Well Organized as I Had Hoped 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There are many glowing reviews of this book and it does provide the goods on how and where to go to get good shots. The maps (5) and sections are also quite simple to read. In addition, the sequential numbering of the points of interest is a help.

I was disappointed to find so much coverage of photographic technique. While some technique discussions directly relate to the unique character of Yosemite (for example talking about color and the lack of it in granite) most of it feels more like filler, and indeed makes it harder to navigate to the sections of interest.

The book also lacks an index so the only useful navigation tool is the brief table of contents. Without that table of contents it would be hard to find any particular section and even with it, you're going to have to resort to man-made book marks to find what you want. For example if Pohono Bridge and Fern Spring caught your fancy but you didn't remember to book mark it or remember its number you'll have to resort to scanning all of the maps and/or all of the numbered interest points because despite the page of content, there is no entry for this viewpoint in the table of contents (and remember there is no index).

I would prefer the maps be all together at the front or back so that it would work better as a reference book. I would also have liked to see some more examples of "out of the way" hikes to desirable vistas.

Finally, I would like the author to have provided some sort of "effort vs eye-appeal" rating to help me focus on which sunrise locations are the "not to miss" areas and which are "ok". Perhaps the author can even suggest a few itineraries. These more useful things could replace the "choosing film" techniques section and others like it that are a bit basic and detract from the otherwise good "where and when" information.

I'm tempted to get Harold Davis's book "The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite & the High Sierra" just to make a comparison.

Editorial Review:

Cumberland Island is the largest and most beloved of the Georgia barrier islands. Although it can be reached only by boat, more than forty thousand people make the trip each year to enjoy the island's natural splendor and solitude. As on most barrier islands, human activity has long been a shaping force on Cumberland. It is among the few islands, however, that we have let return to a relatively natural state. With its expansive oceanfront beaches, dunes, interior maritime forests, freshwater ponds, tidal creeks, and salt marshes, Cumberland Island is all the more special for its restored natural environment. In The Seasons of Cumberland Island, naturalist and photographer Fred Whitehead captures the unique allure of the island's flora and fauna in 118 stunning full-color photographs. Moving through seasons punctuated by the comings and goings of such animals as the migratory birds that pass through in autumn and spring and the loggerhead turtles that nest here in summer, the photographs reveal the subtle but important effect of cyclical change on the island's ecosystems. The lush color images, which are often paired with detailed captions, include spectacular views of muscadine vines and Virginia creeper in autumn, a prowling bobcat in winter, a nest of pileated woodpeckers in the spring, and a green tree frog announcing an impending summer rain shower. Featuring an introduction on the importance of the complex ecosystems of barrier islands like Cumberland, the book informs as it enchants. Here is a stunning tribute to Cumberland's sublime treasures that also serves as a thoughtful reminder to respect and protect the wildness of our barrier islands.
