Editorial Review:

“Lynn was always the best rock-and-roll photographer.” —Tom Petty

Lynn Goldsmith’s vast body of work testifies to her passion for rock and roll. Beginning in the late 1960s, she plunged into the scene working at Electra Records making promotional films. She worked with Joshua White, of the famed Joshua Light Show, creating Video Magnification at rock concerts and went on to become the first director of Late night network Television's ABC In-Concert series. Besides directing, she managed bands and then launched her own music career as Will Powers with the help of established artists like Steve Winwood, Sting, and Todd Rundgren, among others, all the while taking brilliant photographs. Equally at home in the photo studio and shooting reportage, she compiled an unparalleled portfolio of hard-to-get images. Whether the subject be punk, alternative, commercial pop, or the rarified world of the superstars of rock, Goldsmith has a vast range of rare and unusual photographs.

Rock and Roll is a collection of her best work, accompanied by quotes from many of her subjects provided especially for this book. It includes three gatefolds with rock-mosaics made up of thousands of her photographs of the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Kiss.

The introduction is by Iggy Pop, formerly of the Stooges, the godfather of punk.

At certain moments—on a trip, on a holiday, or during those first weeks of parenthood, for example—have you ever wished you were a National Geographic photographer? In this unique guide, staff photographer Joel Sartore takes the mystery out of making extraordinary pictures of kids with a hilarious tour through his own family albums. Sartore’s photographs delight and inspire, from the first moments a newborn enters the house to Halloween parades, from visits with family and friends to fireworks on the Fourth of July. Easy-to-follow tips and instructions make the creative process simple, helping parents approach photography in a whole new way. Digital photographers will appreciate tips on editing techniques, album innovations, archiving methods, and printing. Sartore’s charisma and humor make learning a pure delight.

Unlike competitive titles, Photographing Your Family is lavishly illustrated to show the many ways to make pictures, how Sartore captured these images specifically, and the philosophies a world-class photographer brings to his work at home—with emphasis on the contributions that relatives, friends, and pets can make to the story that is family.

Early childhood is a fleeting time that parents and grandparents go to great lengths to capture in photos. This book will appeal to a vast audience: families who want to create memorable albums, parents with new babies, and everyone who wants to give a truly unique and useful family gift.

Editorial Review:

Critically acclaimed for Girl Culture and Fast Forward, Lauren Greenfield continues her exploration of contemporary female culture with Thin, a groundbreaking book about eating disorders. Greenfield's photographs are paired with extensive interviews and journal entries from twenty girls and women who are suffering from various afflictions. We meet 15-year-old Brittany, who is convinced that being thin is the only way to gain acceptance among her peers; Alisa, a divorced mother of two whose hatred of her body is manifested in her relentless compulsion to purge; Shelly, who has been battling anorexia for six years and has had a feeding tube surgically implanted in her stomach; as well as many others. Alongside these personal stories are essays on the sociology and science of eating disorders by renowned researchers Joan Jacobs Brumberg, Dr. David Herzog, and Dr. Michael Strober. These intimate photographs, frank voices, and thoughtful discussions combine to make Thin not only the first book of its kind but also a portrait of profound understanding.

Editorial Review:

The impulse to do AMERICAN MUSIC, writes famed photographer Annie Leibovitz, “came from a desire to return to my original subject and look at it with a mature eye. Bring my experience to it…make it a real American tapestry.” Her ambitious idea became AMERICAN MUSIC, a stunning collection of photographs of the musicians, places and people that enrich the landscape of American music.

As Rolling Stone’s chief photographer for over thirteen years, Leibovitz created a legendary body of work. Her portraits of some of the world’s most talented musicians capture more than the performer, they convey the art of making music. For AMERICAN MUSIC, Leibovitz traveled across the country to juke joints in the Mississippi Delta, honkytonks in Texas, and jazz clubs in New Orleans “to take pictures in places that mean something.” In her signature style, she shares stunning portraits of American greats -- B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Beck, Bob Dylan, Mary J. Blige, Jon Bon Jovi, Steve Earle, Ryan Adams, Miles Davis, Etta James, Pete Seeger, Emmylou Harris, Tom Waits, The Dixie Chicks, Dr. Dre, The Roots and many more.

AMERICAN MUSIC includes a commentary about the American Music project by Leibovitz, short essays by musicians Patti Smith, Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle, Mos Def, Ryan Adams, and Beck as well as biographical sketches of all the musicians.

Beyond art book, beyond photography 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

It is not really a book, but an art object: accordion folded and neatly ensconced in a box, its heavy cardboard structure makes it a durable thing, one that transcends the notion of a mere "book." It is an object of intrinsic beauty and the mere holding of it in one's hands conveys the good taste, fine quality, and the superb craftmanship that were blended to create PORTRAITS.

One side of the fold contains text -with some pictures- and the other the portfolio of portraits. Maria Hambourg and Mia Fineman collaborate in the essay "Avedon's Endgame," which presents, analyzes and brings into focus the extraordinary talent behind the portraits; and Richard Avedon gives us a touching essay called "Borrowed Dogs," in which he addresses some of his unquiet talents. The other side is one's private gallery of 27 pictures (including the covers) to be savored at home, each image a meticulous print. In all it is an extraordinary performance by those involved, and a jewel to possess.

Avedon has pushed the borders of his art far beyond picture taking: a master psychologist, his portraits are potent statements about the soul and the fears and the anger and the dilapidation and the triumph and the humanity of his subjects. His pictures are so intense and revealing that the viewer cannot remain neutral. The diptych of Clarence Lippard, a drifter, makes one see more than we have any right to ask for: because if we must view the horror of a wasted life on one panel we must also accept the defiant triumphalism and humor that the second panel conveys. Waste no pity on Mr. Lippard, he asks no such thing from you.

I shall often return to this jewel for solace; and for a jolt about the meaning of being alive and a human being.

Editorial Review:

Richard Avedon is one of the most influential photographers of the second half of the 20th century. His portrait work comprises an authoritative record of the era and, as a staff photographer of "Harper's Bazaar" and later for "Vogue", Avedon redefined what a fashion photograph is. With uncompromising directness, Avedon portrayed his subjects against a white background, with no extraneous details to distract from tthe essential specificity of face, gaze, dress and gesture. His work includes mesmerizing images of Truman Capote, Willem de Kooning, Samuel Beckett, Francis Bacon and Marily Monroe, as well as of the uncelebrated Americans of his project "In the American West". Spanning Richard Avedon's entire career, starting from the late 1940s, this volume offers a selection of his photographic portraits. It is published to accompany a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Wow! Was I born too late? 5 out of 5 stars.

Mr. Aarons...what a treasure! I won't bother with many words...just...wow is enough!

Rehash of previous work 2 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I was so disappointed. This book is about 80% material that was previously published in a much classier book, A Wonderful Time. Readers lucky enough to have the earlier book should not waste their money on this rehash.

Editorial Review:

From the end of World War II through the 1980s, Aarons photographed the rich and famous, the beautiful and the celebrated: Hollywood royalty, European aristocracy, the grande dames of high society, captains of industry, media moguls, statesmen and stars of every sort. Though upholding the glamorous image of wealth, power, talent and beauty, he saw himself as a journalist whose duty it was to inform, and this led him to develop the environmental portrait - photographs of his subjects at home, at work, at play and mingling with each other. This type of portrait has influenced a generation of photojournalists whose work can be seen in today's lifestyle magazines. This volume shows Aarons photographs of the international elite in their exclusive playgrounds during the jet-set decades of the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

Editorial Review:

At Twelve is Sally Mann's revealing, collective portrait of twelve-year-old girls on the verge of adulthood. To be young and female in America is a time of tremendous excitement and social possibilities; it is a trying time as well, caught between childhood and adulthood, when the difference is not entirely understood. As Ann Beattie writes in her perceptive introduction, "These girls still exist in an innocent world in which a pose is only a pose-- what adults make of that pose may be the issue." The consequences of this misunderstanding can be real: destitution, abuse, unwanted pregnancy. Mann does not deny this reality, but records it, both in the faces of her subjects and in written stories that accompany thirteen of the portraits, adding another dimension to our understanding of "childhood."

The young women in Mann's unflinching, large-format photographs, however, are not victims. They return the viewer's gaze with a disturbing equanimity. Poet Jonathan Williams writes, "Sally Mann's girls are the ones who do the hard looking in At Twelve-- be up to it!" Partly this is a result of the remarkable rapport that Mann is able to establish with her subjects.

Herself the mother of three, Mann has lived most of her life in Lexington, Virginia, where all of these pictures were taken. In fact, many of the families of the young women were cared for by her father, who was the town doctor for over forty years. So while At Twelve is an intensely personal vision of what it means, now, to be twelve and female, each of Mann's subjects is allowed the opportunity to frankly return our wondering, reminiscent gaze and to have a history of her own, rooted in a specific place at a particular moment-- at twelve.

Nothing New 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I expected more information, specifically on modeling, composition, and selecting locations for outdoor portraiture based on the goal one is trying to achieve.

Also, would have been handy if it included (with pictures) different techniques to overcome physical shortcomings. Unfortunately, not everyone looks beautiful in a two-piece bikini. With a little small talk I try to attain subject's insecurities, I then photograph them in ways were I enhance their best features and reduce focus on the areas of insecurity. It would have been nice to review the techniques of others, compare, experiment, and incorporate some.

Limited by having 128 pages and 15 photographers profiled. Next time dedicate 150 pages with the input of 5 top photographers.

Editorial Review:

Featuring 15 of the industry's top photographers, among them Monte Zucker, Michael Ayers, Dave Newman, and Kathleen Hawkins, this guide teaches professional photographers how to capture the most flattering views of the female form—and appeal to their largely female clientele—through careful lighting and posing. This reference emphasizes how from the very start of the process, certain techniques should be employed to create high quality images, such as using light to enhance a beautiful face and employing shadow and light to downplay any of the subject's percieved flaws or insecurities. With 36 detailed lighting and posing diagrams illustrating how to re-create the work of the pros, this handbook reveals numerous ways to create a technically flawless, saleable portrait of a female client.

Several Problems 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I've seen several mentions of grainy photos, and they are grainy, however that is the least of the problems with this book.

First of all many of the figures have been traced out from the background the photo was taken with and pasted onto a plain white background, causing multiple problems, like persepctive and flat or squished body surfaces where the models were originally sitting or lying on something. The "cutting and pasting" is sloppily done, and in many of the photos the tips of toes and fingers have been cut off, very annoying.

Secondly, there are several photographs that take up two pages...but this is a bound book, so the entire center of the body is not visible, and because a portion is in the binding even the countour is not usable. In additon to the two page layouts, there are multiple other figures that fall directly in the center of the book, and are rendered unusable by the binding. The only thing I can figure is that this was originally a spiral bound book, or had pull out pages, like a magazine centerfold. I can't imagine someone would intentionally publish a book with such an awful layout.

Lastly, some of the "motion" figures are cheats. One in particular is clearly a man laying on something propped up on a pillow, but he has been cut and pasted as though it were an upright pose...maybe that explains why so many found the poses "unatural". That wouldn't be a big deal if the book wasn't called "The Figure In Motion", and was maybe titled "Some Figures In Motion, and Some Sedentary But Turned To Appear As Though They Were In Motion."

Couldn't give it no stars, as I will use some of the photos, but my money could most certainly have been better spent.

Editorial Review:

Leaping, somersaulting, stretching and dancing figures animate this gallery of action poses, photographed for artists of all levels to use as a reference when portraying human figures in motion. There are pictures of both male and female models in suspended action to show the body from numerous vantage points. Students can practise figure drawing by copying the photographs, while advanced artists can use them as points of departure, altering body positions to suit specific compositional needs.

Great ideas for better portraits 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Taking portraits is a hobby of mine. I have a studio set up in my house. The author has really good ideas for improving portraits. Although I already have about 6 other books on portraiture, I'm learning good things from this book. He shares simple tips from his years of experience. It's better than most of the other books I've already got. Many examples of poses are given which I am finding helpful.

Editorial Review:

With easy-to-follow instructions and detailed photo sequences showing how to arrange lights and lighting accessories, this carefully structured course teaches all the fundamentals of portraiture, as well as a host of other creative techniques. It sets out everything the amateur needs to know to create a wide range of styles, from choosing the right equipment to composing the background to placing and positioning the subject for maximum effect. The basics of color and black and white, digital capture and film, and studio and location shooting all receive detailed attention, and helpful tips on mood-enhancing lighting will help raise novices’ skills to professional levels.
