My opinion of this book is biased by my love of Canadians... 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I was fortunate to have found this book a couple of years ago when I was in Vancouver,BC, and I was nothing but thrilled to see 1) a new Coupland book, 2) a book about Canada, and 3) a picture book for adults. And since I've had it I have found myself reading it several times.

Coupland fans who didn't like the "non-fiction journal" style of "Polaroids from the Dead" may not enjoy this book. But Coupland fans who vist his website for art as well as literature, or try to make gallery shows when Coupland's work is being displayed, will absolutely cherish this book.

Coupland spends anywhere from a couple of paragraphs to a couple pages talking about Canadaian facets like Cigs, Hockey, the Maple Leaf, Poutine, and the Trans Canadian Highway.

This is a must have for die hard Coupland fans, Canadians, US citizens who have spent any amount of time near the border, and everyone else in the know.

Editorial Review:

Renown writer and artist Douglas Coupland's valentine to Canada looks at how it feels to be a Canadian now and imagines what it might feel like to be a Canadian in the future. From collective memories, Coupland locates objects like stubbie beer bottles and ookpiks, Kraft dinner and maple walnut ice cream. With the same witty sensibility, he considers significant events and relevant issues, like Canada's relationship with the United States, Medicare, and the landscape itself in this colorful, lively mix of image and text.

A Grand View of the Canadian Rockies 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is one of two mountain photography books that I received as Christmas gifts. Canadian Mike Grandmaison shows an obvious love of his subject, as well as skill and artistry as a photographer. He breaks down the Canadian Rockies into six areas/chapters from north to south. The Rockies are shown in varying moods of light in all their grandeur. He uses reflection effectively. He also presents small details from time to time. Ben Gadd provides a written introduction to the book, sharing his intimate knowledge of these peaks and a bit of geologic history. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

The Canadian Rockies offer some of the world’s most varied and beautiful scenery, from rugged peaks and limestone caves to waterfalls and serene lakes. This handsome large-format book captures the heart and soul of this glorious region in dazzling detail. Never-before-published images from celebrated photographer Mike Grandmaison portray grand landscapes and majestic views interspersed with more intimate portraits of plants and wildlife. His stunning photographs cover the Rockies' entire geographical area in Canada and include images taken in every season, demonstrating the habitat’s everchanging moods.

Editorial Review:

Will Ferguson has spent the past three years criss-crossing Canada: in a helicopter above the barren-lands of the sub-arctic; in a canoe with his four-year old son; on seaplanes; and on the Underground Railroad. Ferguson's travels have taken him from Cape Spear on the coast of Newfoundland to the sun-dappled streets of Olde Victoria. Delving into Canada's history and landscape along the way, Ferguson's discoveries are fascinating and provocative. Funny, poignant and insightful, "Beauty Tips from Moose Jaw" is a personal tribute to a quirky and enthralling country.

Editorial Review:

If a picture is indeed worth thousand words, Jack Chiang's Thousand Islands tells a grand and wondrous story.

In this magnificent collection of more than 250 full-colour images, Chiang tells the story of the people who live, work and play along both sides of the Canada-U.S. border. He explores the four-seasons saga of this spectacular area and one of the most popular destinations enjoyed by millions of visitors every year.

Here are the towns and villages on both sides of the St. Lawrence River - Kingston, Brockville, Belleville, and Gananoque on the Canadian side - Alexandria Bay, Clayton, and Ogdensburg and on the U.S. side - just to mention a few.

With the artist's eye for detail that has earned him international acclaim, Chiang captures the splendour of the St. Lawrence River itself, the vast sweep of breathtaking islands, Boldt Castle, Singer Castle, the lighthouses, and the virtual armada of cruise and pleasure craft that ply the waterways between the islands.

A Wonderful view of Newfoundland 4 out of 5 stars.
34 of 34 people found this review helpful.

I found this book while staying at a B&B in Newfoundland, and it was such a wonderful read that I had to run out and buy a copy to take home with me. With wonderful insights into the people of Newfoundland the authors use powerful images and the words of the Newfoundlanders themselves to tell the stories of the place. Alternately powerful and fun, this book is a must for anyone wishing to understand the lives of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and their place in history and Canada.

Newfoundland and Labrador 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The book is dated (1988), so I bet some things have changed over the past 18 years. I won't know until I visit Newfoundland this summer. Still a good read for anyone interested in the area.

Editorial Review:

The authors have not only captured the unique flavor of the people but have recorded hours of conversations as their subjects reminisced about life, work and the changes that have washed over the island since Confederation.
