Waiting Until Your Family Implodes? 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

In "The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family," fabled Pat Lencioni offers us a fable focusing on the most important organization in life, our family. Motivated by his own experience and observation of his contemporaries, Lencioni concludes today's parents are stressed out and overwhelmed because they operate by the seat of their pants. The long term costs are real but go unappreciated until the family implodes. Unfocused day to day living increases rates of depression, substance abuse, and psychological illness leading to serious dysfunctions and divorce.

Lencioni offers a prescription for restoring sanity and ensuring more purposeful, less frantic lives. It centers on three key questions:
1. What makes your family unique?
2. What is your family's top priority - rallying cry - right now?
3. How will you use the answers? And how will you keep the answers alive?

The fundamental principal applied by Lencioni is context. Once a family knows the context in which it operates, they will have an agreed-upon guide for family decision-making.

My wife, who read this in one sitting, loved the book as well. She noted that Lencioni's model provides couples with an exellent methodology for dialogue on child rearing and day-to-day living. "The model leads to consistency on decisions and a way to judge a couple's response to unplanned events. Most importantly, it will knit couples closer together as it leads to better coordination and mutual support."

This is an excellent book for all families. Prior to the publication of "The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family," Lencioni tested his prescription and provides outcomes from a number of families who tried the medicine. He notes every family plan will be different and will not alleviate all stress, as some chaos is inevitable.

I read "The Three Big Questions for a Frantic Family" with my children's families in mind only to discover that Lencioni's sage advice is hard to ignore for any couple, regardless of age.

Editorial Review:

In this unique and groundbreaking book, business consultant and New York Times best-selling author Patrick Lencioni turns his sights on the most important organization in our lives—the family. As a husband and the father of four young boys, Lencioni realized the discrepancy between the time and energy his clients put into running their organizations and the reactive way most people run their personal lives. Having experienced the stress of a frantic family firsthand, he and his wife began applying some of the tools he uses with Fortune 500 companies at home, and with surprising results.

This book was very relieving to me - someone who was always afraid to give birth! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My whole life I never wanted to have children because I was afraid to give birth. But then after finding out I was pregnant with twins I needed to find some way to calm my fears and move forward. I was strongly against having a c-section, and this book was what empowered me to voice my opinion to my doctors and nurses during my time of need. Even though I ended up giving birth 2 months early (with twins this involved a lot of intervention) I was able to give birth naturally (though not drug free), but that was the most important to me... to let the babies come when they needed to come, and to go with your own body's flow - it is very important to be educated and informed with childbirth decision making!! And to choose an educated doctor as well - mine was fine with delivering twins vaginally, even though they were 2 months early. She was also upset that the hospital wanted to set me up for a c-section even though both babies were head down. This book will let you know where you need to have strength and get through your pregnancy and delivery!!

Editorial Review:

Since the Bradley method was first introduced in 1970, a growing number of expectant parents have opted for natural childbirth, knowing that it's safer than medicated or surgical delivery. But where can parents-to-be go for information on how to have a successful Bradley birth? This book provides all the answers, offering sound advice on how to prepare physically for labor and what to expect during each of its stages. Photos & line drawings.

Editorial Review:

Kids with ADHD need to be loved and shown how to become successful adults. Unfortunately, their lack of attention and restlessness often get in the way. Parents of these kids try so hard to stay connected and remain patient in the face of daily frustration. However, it is an incredible challenge to remain positive and involved when your child does not respond to the kinds of strategies that work for other children. Without guidance and systematic treatment, these bright, inquisitive children are unlikely to graduate from high school, are more prone to use illegal drugs, and struggle to maintain employment as adults. Parenting Children with ADHD: Lessons That Medicine Cannot Teach gives parents a framework for building a successful parenting program at home. Drawing from his experiences in evaluating and treating thousands of children and teens with ADHD, Vincent Monastra presents a series of ten lessons that are essential for promoting the success of kids with ADHD. In simple language, Monastra explains the causes of ADHD and how nutrition, medication and certain therapeutic procedures can improve attention, concentration, and behavioral control. Recognizing the importance of school success, Monastra also reviews the educational rights of children with ADHD and outlines a process for working with school districts to get your child the help they need. Beyond this foundation, Monastra describes non-confrontational ways to teach your child essential life skills like organization, problem-solving, and emotional control. Through guiding principles like "Work for Play" and "Time Stands Still", Monastra ends the struggle for control and helps children learn that in life you need to "earn your play" and apologise and "make amends" when you do something that hurts another person (or makes their life more difficult).

Editorial Review:

All over the U.S. and in over twenty countries around the world, Touchpoints has become required reading for anxious parents of babies and small children. T. Berry Brazelton's great empathy for the universal concerns of parenthood, and honesty about the complex feelings it engenders, as well as his uncanny insight into the predictable leaps and regressions of early childhood, have comforted and supported families since its publication in 1992. In this completely revised edition Dr. Brazelton introduces new information on physical, emotional, and behavioral development. He also addresses the new stresses on families and fears of children, with a fresh focus on the role of fathers and other caregivers. This updated volume also offers new insights on prematurity, sleep patterns, early communication, toilet training, co-sleeping, play and learning, SIDS, cognitive development and signs of developmental delay, childcare, asthma, a child's immune system, and safety. Dr. Sparrow, Brazelton's co-author on several other books, brings a child psychiatrist's insights into the many perennial childhood issues covered in this comprehensive book. No parent should be without the reassurance and wisdom Touchpoints provides.

Every dad should read this book. 5 out of 5 stars.

Men are being emasculated today. Mainstream family media shows us to be idiots fumbling our way through life. Fathers are accepting passivity and surrendering our manhood in the process. This book is an excellent guide to help counter this and create an authentic relationship with our sons.

helpful, but incomplete 3 out of 5 stars.

Lewis addresses a major need in our society: raising our boys into men. This is a timely message because we live in a society that has completely forgotten that there is such a thing. Or else its definition of a man is far short of what the Bible calls 'a man'. Lewis offers many helpful tips on how to celebrate rites of passage from boyhood to manhood - tips that I may just use with my own sons.
That said, I felt that his overall view of what a man is still fell short of the biblical standard. What was lacking in this book was 'how' this is done. To come up with good insight and goals to strive for in wanting to become a man is one thing - to show young men 'how' that is to be done is quite another. Our power to become men and to live like men and to treat women as they should be treated and to stand for truth the way we're called to is rooted firmly in Jesus Christ, not in our best intentions to be men. I'm not sure that Lewis wouldn't agree with this; however, I did not read much of it in his book.
We cannot just give ourselves a good vision of manhood and then strive, in our own best intentions, to live it out. We WILL fail at this if it is not rooted in our life source Himself, Jesus Christ. I appreciate what Lewis has done - he has narrowed the gap between what little writing is out there on biblical manhood and what should be. But I would have liked to have seen our Savior magnified more as the Cornerstone for how such men are made and sustained.

Editorial Review:

What does it mean to be a man? Moreover, how does a father instill these qualities in his son? By Raising a Modern-Day Knight. Beginning with a biblical perspective of manhood, author-pastor Robert Lewis shares a unique approach to shaping a boy into a man by equipping him with three essential elements: a vision, a code of conduct, and a cause (Christianity) in which to invest his life. Complete with ceremony ideas to celebrate accomplishments and ingrain them in his mind, this softcover is as insightful as it is practical in raising a boy to be a chivalrous, godly man.

Hands-on strategies for teaching your disorganized child how to organize for school success!

The overstuffed backpack, the missing homework, the unused planner, the test he didn't know about. Sound familiar? When the disorganized child meets the departmentalized structure of middle school, everything can fall apart. Even the academically successful child will start to falter if she misses deadlines, loses textbooks, or can't get to class on time.

This practical book is full of hands-on strategies for helping parents identify and teach organizational skills. Educational consultant Donna Goldberg has developed these methods by working with hundreds of students and in this book she provides:

  • Assessments to gather information about your child's learning style, study habits, and school requirements

  • Guidelines for taming that overstuffed binder and keeping it under control

  • PACK -- a four-step plan for purging and reassembling a backpack or locker

  • Instructions for organizing an at-home work space for the child who studies at a desk or the child who studies all over the house

  • Ways to help your child graduate from telling time to managing time

  • Special tips for kids with learning disabilities and kids who have two homes...and more

The Organized Student is a must for any parent who has heard the words, "I can't find my homework!"

READ this! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was revolutionary to me. If you are considering purchasing it, do so and read it! What a concept, that we need to apologize in a language that the person receiving the apology can hear it and accept it.

Wonderful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

We are teaching this book in our Young Married class and I think it is a wonderful book. Many in the class have said the knowledge in the book is invaluable. I can't recommend this book enough. All couples should read this book...

The Five Languages of Apology 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent book for healing relationships. In essence it would probably be more marketable if the title was "Healing Relatioships". I used this book as a resource for our bible study and it has been a tremendous tool for bringing our church family closer together. It helped to teach individuals in learning how to be more respectful of one another and most of all to apologize for errors. I highly recommend this book to everyone in need of healing relaitonships. Most of all in learning how to apologize and to accept apologies.

Editorial Review:

Just as you have a different love language, you also hear and express the words and gestures of apology in a different language. New York Times best-selling author Gary Chapman has teamed with counselor Jennifer Thomas on this groundbreaking study of the way we apologize, discovering that it's not just a matter of will-it's a matter of how. By helping people identify the languages of apology, this book clears the way toward healing and sustaining vital relationships. The authors detail proven techniques for giving and receiving effective apologies.

The Best Thing About This Book? It WORKS!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was one of those Moms who felt as though her child would never be potty trained! My 3-and-a-half year-old son just did not seem inclined to do it. We offered gifts and party incentives...nothing doing! He did like to pee in the "big potty" from time to time but that was about it. I even bought him a potty of his own. Every day I said, "Hey...let's try to poop on the potty today" and every day he replied, "Tomorrow, Mommy." I also bought the WordWorld Bucket Set - House made my Mega Blocks that I knew he would LOVE. I made sure he saw it and let him know he would only get it when he went on the potty. Even THAT did not entice him!

I don't agree with pushing kids into doing something they don't seem ready for...and I definitely did not want to embarrass him about it. But he was the last kid in his pre-school to still wear diapers and one boy teased him about it once. It KILLED me! Still, I felt he would do it when he was ready.

But then I bought this book... He LOVED the book. He loved the pictures and the story about Michael. I made it very interactive with him. He asked me to start reading it 2-3 times a night. The weekend after we received the book, we took him to buy big boy underpants...just like Michael did in the book. He wanted to wear them...like Michael...and that was it! I sent him to pre-school with his underpants on (which I knew was a big risk) and he did not have an accident all day! And he went on the potty!! When he came home that day and told me he "pooped" on the potty, I was skeptical. That is...until he went into the bathroom at home, shut the door, and then proudly came out, grabbed my hand...and brought me over to the toilet to see the poopies. I jumped up and down as if I had just won the billion dollar lottery (and we also threw him a "Big Boy" party with ice cream cake as further reward)!

My son really related to Michael in the book...and I truly believed that it was what inspired him to use the potty. How could I NOT give this wonderful book five stars!!!

Editorial Review:

"What a big boy you are!"

Potty training can be fun. With warmth and sensitivity, Joanna Cole and Maxie Chambliss guide young boys though the challenges and rewards potty training—from the first steps to the joy of graduating to big boy underpants! A helpful "Note to parents" is included.

Have you ever stepped back to watch what really goes on when your children play? As psychologist Lawrence J. Cohen points out, play is children’s way of exploring the world, communicating deep feelings, getting close to those they care about, working through stressful situations, and simply blowing off steam. That’s why “playful parenting” is so important and so successful in building strong, close bonds between parents and children. Through play we join our kids in their world–and help them to

• Express and understand complex emotions
• Break through shyness, anger, and fear
• Empower themselves and respect diversity
• Play their way through sibling rivalry
• Cooperate without power struggles

From eliciting a giggle during baby’s first game of peekaboo to cracking jokes with a teenager while hanging out at the mall, Playful Parenting is a complete guide to using play to raise confident children. Written with love and humor, brimming with good advice and revealing anecdotes, and grounded in the latest research, this book will make you laugh even as it makes you wise in the ways of being an effective, enthusiastic parent.
