This Advdenture in Odyssey series is great. My daughter is 7 years old. She enjoyed listening to the program, and could easily relate to the young characters and their exciting adventure through history. She learned something about history that she will likely not learn in school... our founding Fathers trusted God to lead them. This includes four great lessons in History and Morality, all the time entertaining young and old alike.

Her many fans will welcome the publication of Naomi Ragen's first play, which premiered in July 2002 at Habima National Theater in Tel Aviv. It is based on a true story: a Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) woman, wife of a rabbi, mother of 12, leaves her home and stays with a friend. The community's "modesty squad" tries in vain to force her to go back. Her friend is physically attacked, her arm and leg broken. The rabbi's wife is punished: she is cut off from her children, against her will. Novelist Ragen learned of this tragic story several years ago from a newspaper article. "We've been together ever since then," she says. "They simply crushed this wonderful woman who never committed any crime. It's not a melodrama. It's a story of social truth, like Ibsen's "A Doll's House". "I tried to write a play about the status of the Jewish woman in the strictly Orthodox world," continues Ragen "The religious woman does not have any public place in which she can express her opinions in a natural fashion. Conversely, every man can say whatever he wants from the platform of the synagogue, on any subject, including current events; religious women have never had access to it. In synagogue, we pray upstairs in the women's section, while the men get up and say what they want to the entire congregation. Why shouldn't the woman have the same right? Is she less intelligent? Does she have fewer interesting things to say?"

I rec'd my shipment much sooner than expected, so that was my first good reaction. I was delighted by the contents. It is categorized by early preschool to adults/teens, there are readings for solo and for theatre and these can be adapted to suit whatever audience/actors available that you have. Clearly explained outline in the production notes with written and diagramed instructions. The scripts are clear throughout the book. Categories from a traditional view to a modern twist on an old story. Very well done and a welcome addition to our home. I will be using one for our Christmas program coming shortly and there's no worry about memorization for this one! My favorite part of this book is that this treasure trove of plays are royalty free!

Who so ever buys this book is in for a real treat. Even though the plays are not always "traditional" and will not fit every church, they all have the same positive message, short, sweet, with easy to memorize lines these plays are ideal for kids. Possible to reproduce (copy, and act)

Why are all of saints light-skinned? 2 out of 5 stars.

This book is a lovely book. I think that the hymn that the text is based upon is especially fun for children in looking at saints in the past and the saints who are presently around us. However, I was very disheartened to see that the saints are all depicted as people with light skin. There are two people of color depicted, but one has to really look hard to find them in the crowd. Obviously, there is something wrong if we think that only light-skinned people are saints.

I bought this book for my 3rd and 4th grade Sunday School class to teach them about the hymn and the saints it referenced. We had a wonderful time learning about Joan of Arc, John Donne, St. Martin of Tours and the others. It sparked excellent conversation about the communion of saints. It would also be an excellent gift for a child of any age.
