Didn't learn much 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I agree with the person that said it lacked details. You come away knowing that you're supposed to acquire assets while reducing your liabilities, and eventually somehow begin and sell corporations for profit. The author didn't explain how an ordinary person goes about this process...mostly it seemed like him bragging that he was able to do it.

What I take away from this audio-CD could probably have been reduced down to 4 tracks on 1 disc. Sad, but true.

Editorial Review:

Anyone who thinks the audiocassette adaptation of Stephen Covey's bestseller, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, is a shortcut to reading the book has another thing coming. As a preview, the cassette is worth every one of its 90 minutes; as a substitute for the original, it will only leave you wishing for the rest. There's a reason 7 Habits has sold more than 5 million copies and been translated into 32 languages. Serious work has obviously gone into it, and serious change can likely come out of it--but only with constant discipline and steadfast commitment. As the densely packed tape makes immediately clear, this is no quick fix for what's ailing us in our personal and professional lives.

The tape opens to the silky-smooth, overtrained voice of the female narrator, who's responsible for tying together audio clips from actual Covey seminars. Leaving aside the occasional attempts at promoting Covey and his institute, her script does a first-rate job of making sense of Covey's own intense, analogy-rich style of explaining his habits. There's nothing simple about his approach to becoming an effective person. The first three habits alone--which have to do with personal responsibility, leadership, and self-management--could take years to master. Yet the last four are unattainable, the narrator insists, if you can't acquire the personal security--the "inner core," says Covey--that presumably comes from a mastery of the foundation.

Throughout our lessons, Covey's presence is both learned and thoroughly appealing. He drops references to the likes of Socrates, T.S. Eliot, and Robert Frost with the aplomb of an English professor. And his knack for mixing everyday stories with abstract concepts manages to clarify difficult issues while respecting our intelligence. You could argue that the cassette is nothing more than a clever marketing tool for selling another few million copies of the book. But, even at that, it's worth the investment in time and concentration: in the end, we're moved to learn more about integrating all seven habits in our struggle to become better and, yes, more effective people. Excellent for managers 5 out of 5 stars.

I assigned this as required reading for a group of my managers. It is a very good resource for me and for them.

Buffalo writers share real stories and lessons learned 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was recommended to me by Jim, a successful businessman I met on an airplane early in 2007. He said it was the best business advice book he had ever read. So I put it on my wish list and never thought too much about it until December when I was ordering several books to read for the start of the new year. I wasn't sure I would like the book -- it was written in 1993 and I wondered if the content was still current. Jim was right and I have to concur that this is one of the best business and practical leadership advice books I've ever read, and I'm an avid reader of leadership and management books.

This isn't a book that I just read -- this one I studied with pen in hand: I underlined important points I want to remember and use and made plenty of notes in the margins so it has become more of workbook for me. I remember a few years ago that a small business owner said to me that "I wish someone would write a book that would tell me all the mistakes they made so I wouldn't have to learn them on my own." This is that book.

In each of the 43 chapters, the authors are open and honest, to the point of showing their vulnerability as leaders, with the lessons they learned while trying to do everything themselves rather than allowing the employees to lead. They share real life stories to make their points but just enough detail for you to not get lost in the story. Each chapter has an organized flow for quick reading.

It's easy for those of us who are business leaders to allow our egos to get in the way of empowering people to allow them to tap into their full potential and not only accept, but willing take responsibility for the growth of the company. As author John Maxwell says, "the highest calling of any leader is to develop other leaders." And the authors of Flight of the Buffalo show just how important that is, admitting their mistakes and showing practical advice of the lessons learned along the way, either in their own companies or with other companies for which they consulted, with questions we can ask ourselves to apply the lesson to our own situation. The questions alone are worth the price of the book and more.

Some topics I found particularly interesting were the discussion in chapter 15 about incremental thinking being an American disease, or the sheer dogged focus on the customer that is weaved throughout the book, and certainly the summary toward the end of how the authors focus their organizations around being obsessed with learning at a fast pace, and why that is so incredibly important.

If you already have developed an organization where people are fully empowered, then this book is less for you. But if you struggle even the slightest bit in getting people to take on more responsibility and initiative, then you have to read this book. But be ready to look in the mirror because much of the lessons point to how the leaders of the organization must think and act differently in order to maximize people's potential, and the potential growth of the organization.

Editorial Review:

The patrician accent of George Plimpton (author of Truman Capote and The X Factor), with its edge of aristocracy and money, is perfectly suited for telling the rags-to-riches story of America's most famous businessman and philanthropist. Indeed, Plimpton seems to positively relish the superlatives that describe the life of John D. Rockefeller, who was far and away one of the most calculating, secretive, competitive, merciless, and talented figures ever to dominate the free market. Showing, early on, his keen attachment to hard work and keeping accounts, Rockefeller started out as an accountant in Cleveland. From there he went into the produce business, and then on to oil. By the time he was 31, he was the most powerful oil refinery owner in the world. His strategies for suppressing competition and controlling all aspects of the oil business while still paying attention to the smallest details make for dramatic listening in this well-documented and accessible narrative. Plimpton recounts how Rockefeller was the ultimate clutch player, calm in the face of adversity, a manager who was constantly searching for talented people and another way to grow Standard Oil into a megalithic modern corporation. Ultimately his rapacious business practices would make him head of the most powerful monopoly in America and the richest man in the world. Plimpton's engrossing reading of Titan brings out the human side of Rockefeller, a man of contradictions who was greedy yet giving, a capitalist villain and a do-gooder. A teetotalling Baptist, he began giving to charity when he was earning just a few dollars a week. As his wealth grew, so too his financial gifts. In the end, Rockefeller's philanthropic acts rivaled the precedents he set as a businessman. The oil baron died just short of his last goal--to reach the age of 100--but the indelible imprint he made on America's financial landscape will live on into the 21st century. (Running time: six hours, four cassettes) --A.E.D.

Editorial Review:

Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman expose the fallacies of standard management thinking in First, Break All the Rules: What the World's Greatest Managers Do Differently. In seven chapters, the two consultants for the Gallup Organization debunk some dearly held notions about management, such as "treat people as you like to be treated"; "people are capable of almost anything"; and "a manager's role is diminishing in today's economy." "Great managers are revolutionaries," the authors write. "This book will take you inside the minds of these managers to explain why they have toppled conventional wisdom and reveal the new truths they have forged in its place."

The authors have culled their observations from more than 80,000 interviews conducted by Gallup during the past 25 years. Quoting leaders such as basketball coach Phil Jackson, Buckingham and Coffman outline "four keys" to becoming an excellent manager: Finding the right fit for employees, focusing on strengths of employees, defining the right results, and selecting staff for talent--not just knowledge and skills. First, Break All the Rules offers specific techniques for helping people perform better on the job. For instance, the authors show ways to structure a trial period for a new worker and how to create a pay plan that rewards people for their expertise instead of how fast they climb the company ladder. "The point is to focus people toward performance," they write. "The manager is, and should be, totally responsible for this." Written in plain English and well organized, this book tells you exactly how to improve as a supervisor. --Dan Ring

This is the best guide to managing money and debt I've read.
A few days after reading the book, I have a whole new grasp of how to get out of debt and stay out. Though I am not in serious debt, the whole money management advice is enlightening. This book should be required reading for all and should be given out in high schools.

Editorial Review:

Millions of consumers have become trapped in a spiral of debt, but there is hope. If you wants to free yourself from the shackles of debt, this book is for you--it can help you "get out of debt, stay out of debt, and live prosperously." Jerrold Mundis writes in a friendly, engaging style, urging readers to stop the cycle of spending. Mundis knows what he's talking about--he, too, was once thousands of dollars in debt and didn't know where to turn. Anecdotes from Debtors Anonymous folks, plus multiple examples from the writer's own life and ledgers, make How to Get Out of Debt an encouraging read, not a condescending one. Once you start your program, you may want to periodically reread some chapters for inspiration--and fun.

The absolute worst choice was made in selecting a speaker! Hilarious!!! Buy it for the laughs!!!!!

Great way to improve your speaking voice & communication skills! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book/Cd is worth its weight in gold IF you practice what it tells you and do the exercises as it suggests. I think it should be a required course for all high school graduates at least!

A lot of info with great price!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have used this before. It is full of concrete ideas, but some times takes a long time to get to the point.

Excellent but not perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

I am giving this product 5 stars because I think that on balance, it provides a LOT of essential information about voice, in a remarkably efficient form, for very little money. I learned a LOT by playing these four cds in my car, and the exercises are quite useful indeed.

I need to caution you about something: the style of the presentation is rather cloying. It's a bit like those old educational films made for high school students in the 1950's, that we used to laugh at decades later, with strange music out of the 1970's. I cannot tell if this was done intentionally for humor, or if it was simply done with earnest but some time ago.

I needed to let go of this in order to appreciate the content of the cds. I did do that, and I'm happy that I did.

The cd information includes details on different aspects of speech, how it sounds when it's wrong, and how it sounds when it's right, and exercises to determine whether this particular problem applies to you and if so, how to gently correct it over time.

What more could you ask for? There is no magic pill to fix your speech. It takes observation, and exercise. One-on-one consultation with an expert would probably be better of course, but even so, these cds provide excellent background, where you can learn on your own time and let the personal consultation operate more efficiently.

Ok, one more thing: the speaker has a great voice except for a slight lisp. How weird is that! A voice teacher to have a slight speech impediment? BUT, I'd be willing to bet that it used to be much worse and this experience, having someone help her minimize this problem, was part of what motivated her to take up this career.

So, if you want to improve your speech, or simply suspect that your speech could be improved, this product is an awesome place to start, both in terms of quality of content and the price. There are a few little annoyances along the way (IMHO) that are well worth overlooking.

The best material I have come across to get rid of clutter! 5 out of 5 stars.

Ab Jackson is humerous and upbeat in all his seminars/tapes. He makes a bothersome task enjoyable to tackle with many simple and logical tips. "Organize Your Life and Get Rid of Clutter" is perfect for anyone that would like to get rid of clutter and become more organized. He addresses many areas and introduces many 'systems' to help people become more organized. This tape is not only a delight and funny to listen to, but in just one day, I have already began to reduce the clutter in my life. I even found out the "why" behind what caused me to become a "clutterholic"! I give it a five star rating and would recommend it to anyone that would like to improve their organizational skills!

Blah. 2 out of 5 stars.

Can I have my money back? There was little on this tape that was either new or motivating. Also included were things such as time management, how to organize your DayTimer, etc. I was hoping for something that would help me deep clean my home, not my office. It was not helpful for my purposes. Unless you're looking for help at the office, save your money.

Editorial Review:

Jackson instructs the clutter impaired how to better organize their lives by teaching them to create files that are easy to use, and to ask two questions that decide the fate of every incoming piece of paper. 2 cassettes.
