This is a great purchase for a college-level psychology student on a budget. The full DSM can be about $80. But this book still has all the information that you would need to know about any mental disorders.

It's been a great tool and I use it all the time. The paperback version is much better than the spiral because the pages stay in tact. I highly recommended it.

Editorial Review:

Her Last Death begins as the phone rings early one morning in the Montana house where Susanna Sonnenberg lives with her husband and two young sons. Her aunt is calling to tell Susanna her mother is in a coma after a car accident. She might not live. Any daughter would rush the thousands of miles to her mother's bedside. But Susanna cannot bring herself to go. Her courageous memoir explains why.

Glamorous, charismatic and a compulsive liar, Susanna's mother seduced everyone who entered her orbit. With outrageous behavior and judgment tinged by drug use, she taught her child the art of sex and the benefits of lying. Susanna struggled to break out of this compelling world, determined, as many daughters are, not to become her mother.

Sonnenberg mines tender and startling memories as she writes of her fierce resolve to forge her independence, to become a woman capable of trust and to be a good mother to her own children. Her Last Death is riveting, disarming and searingly beautiful.

Editorial Review:

Most people are both repelled and intrigued by the images of cold-blooded, conscienceless murderers that increasingly populate our movies, television programs, and newspaper headlines. With their flagrant criminal violation of society's rules, serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy are among the most dramatic examples of the psychopath. Individuals with this personality disorder are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and know the difference between right and wrong, yet they are terrifyingly self-centered, remorseless, and unable to care about the feelings of others. Perhaps most frightening, they often seem completely normal to unsuspecting targets--and they do not always ply their trade by killing. Presenting a compelling portrait of these dangerous men and women based on 25 years of distinguished scientific research, Dr. Robert D. Hare vividly describes a world of con artists, hustlers, rapists, and other predators who charm, lie, and manipulate their way through life. Are psychopaths mad, or simply bad? How can they be recognized? And how can we protect ourselves? This book provides solid information and surprising insights for anyone seeking to understand this devastating condition.

Insightful, honest, beautiful 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Peach Friedman tells her inspiring story in a realistic way while avoiding the mistakes that so many others make when recounting the story of their eating disorder. She is not at all self-pitying and does nothing to glorify her eating disorder or tout her "accomplishments." I appreciate this. I appreciate this because in the past this sort of subtle (and often unintentional) tone used by authors of other books about eating disorder recovery has triggered my own unhealthy behaviors.

Peach relates the development of her eating disorder, from anorexia to exercise bulimia, and her recovery from it without trying to hide the enormous physical, mental and emotional pain that she had to push through, yet she never loses a sense of hope. This book is inspiring for those also recovering from eating disorders of any form, for men or for women, and for any age. It is also a must-read for family and friends of sufferers because Peach, with the knowledge she now has in hindsight, having gone back to the "other side," is so clearly able to explain her experience from an outsider's perspective that is honest and sympathetic but that isn't scary. So often family and friends are scared and desperate to help without knowing how to approach the subject. Her appreciation for her own friends and family, especially for her mother and dietician, illustrates a great example for others who want to support someone in recovery.

I applaud her in her mission to bring attention to exercise bulimia and the dangers associated with it. It can be hard to define and recognize and because exercise is so glorified in our culture, it is especially hard to recover from. It is a legitimate disorder that needs to be taken more seriously. We need to remove this culture of thinking that less food and more exercise is always good. Peach sets a new definition for what 'fitness' really is.

In some ways I'll admit I was disappointed when I finished the book. First of all, I think I was looking for answers. While I didn't expect it to be a self-help book, I might have subconsciously been hoping to be able to put the book down and immediately leap forward into recovery without ever looking back because of some new fact or story I might have learned. This is not the case, and Peach is clear: recovery is about taking one step forward, two steps back, but getting there in the end. And that's okay. She reminds us that it's okay -- and, in fact, necessary -- to go at one's own pace (with gentle, and okay, sometimes not-so-gentle nudging from family and friends).

The second reason I was disappointed when I reached the last page is because Peach's story is so clearly not over yet. Yes, she's fully recovered, but she will have so much more to offer. As she continues to grow herself, and as she trains her clients and speaks out about eating disorders, she will have so much more to say. I can't wait for more of her beautiful writing!

Editorial Review:

Friedman suffered from exercise bulimia—a compulsion to purge calories through excessive exercise, and a rapidly growing eating disorder that affects some 400,000 American women.  In Diary of an Exercise Addict Friedman recounts her descent into a life-threatening illness, her remarkable recovery, and the setbacks along the way. With refreshing candor she lays bare her relationships with family, friends, and lovers and the repressed desire that finally surfaced as she found her own way back to health.

How to find happiness in a dismal situation 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because I was searching for yet another book on workplace bullying and another book came up in my search based on Frankl's book. I read the customer reviews on that book and one reviewer said something to the effect of, "If you want to read a book based on Viktor Frankl's opinion of how to get along at a bad work environment (like a Nazi death camp), why don't you just read Frankl's book?" So, that's where I started. I read it. Twice. Then I got out my computer and typed in passages that had meaning to me so I could re-read them during difficult times. I compressed the entire book down to about 10 pages, single spaced. I must admit that I consider myself a negative, often depressed sort of person, mostly because my work situation is so demoralizing. I was amazed by Frankl's coping mechanisms on how to get along in a difficult situation; every day meant multiple incidents of having to choose the correct path to avoid death or worse, making the choice to give up on your own life (suicide). He went through 5 years of that and lived to tell about it. It is a must read for everyone, particularly when you are having the hardest time of your life. I could tell that if I had read it as a college student, it wouldn't have the same meaning as now, when I am 50 and have had many ups and downs. I see everything at such a deeper level and appreciated this book so much more than I would have if I were younger. Briefly, the lessons in the book written 50 years ago still apply today. Here they are: Let luck be your guide. It's not what you know, it's who you know. Network with the equivalent of a one-step-up lateral (not your own) middle manager and they will help you when they can. Schmooze. Be kind to others. Don't complain, it doesn't help. You can't fix, deal with or appeal to a sadist, so don't try. Avoid sadists at all costs. Keep your mouth shut unless asked for your opinion and then be short and to the point. Praise, even when praise isn't deserved. Keep criticisms to yourself. Be inconspicuous. Work hard for the sake of doing a good job. Fantasize for escape. Everything can be taken away from you except for your past, so relish in it. When something good happens to you, write it down (keep a gratitude journal). Don't do anything that compromises your own values so you won't have regrets. Be careful who you abuse today because tomorrow they may be your master. You are not your job, your title or your position. You are a unique person loved by others. The only thing in life that really matters is the people you love and the people who love and need you. Love shared is eternal. Treat everyone with respect. The meaning of life is not what life can do for you, but what life expects of you; how you make the world a better place with your presence. The purpose of life is not happiness. The purpose of life is discovering what you can contribute to it. Save a slice of bread (or whatever is the only material thing that matters to you when there is nothing left) for later when you are really depressed and it's the only thing left that can get you through that difficult moment. (For me it's chocolate and a dark beer at the same time.) Apathy is the signaling of the beginning of the end of one's life. Everyone that you respect and look up to has human failings. Even tough guys cry. Suffering without purpose is meaningless. The larger the suffering, the bigger the lesson. There's lots more in the book for you to discover and it's an easy read.

not a useful book 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I was asked to get this book by my therapist for use in my therapy. I think that this book does more harm then good. While the homework sheets could perhaps be useful, the overall book is written for the therapist. While most training manuals need to be written dispassionately and for general use. This book, frankly, lacks humanity. It generalizes about people with BPD to the extreme, allowing for no middle ground. I also find the large title to be violating of my privacy.

True Believer is a Patient 5 out of 5 stars.

And that's me. I've been taking a class/group for months on the practices of Dr. Linehan. Of course, this was taught by an awesome doctor and an advanced degree student (who is definately going to make the world a much happier place). All of this combined, this workbook (which the class works out of) is happily, lifechanging. After almost 5 years of suffering with PTSD and depression suffered from injuries in a car accident, only these past few months working through this theory, I feel like my life is coming back now. My family is happier, my life is happier, I am happier. Find a therapist who CAN work with you through this theory and most everyone will benefit with a more positive and happier YOU! Good luck! It works!

Editorial Review:

A vital component in Linehan's comprehensive treatment program, this manual details precisely how to implement DBT behavioral skills training procedures. Included are over three dozen invaluable patient handouts and homework sheets. Clinicians may recommend this book for client purchase or can photocopy patient materials and distribute them as needed.

A must read for every women in love with men 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

After a painful break-up I was left with many questions. And this book has answered them all. Things I/he said/done that puzzeled me, have now found meaning and understanding. I might even say I was clueless about men until I read this book. I understand now that what I thought was a good relationship was anything but, thanks to this book. The first part (women men leave) gave me a lot of insight into my behavior and his reaction to that. I found myself in some greater or lesser extent in each portrait of common women behavior that can end a relationship. The authors explain in structured and simple way what men want from relationships and how they behave. Another helpful book that I highly recommend is How to Snag a Guy and Keep Him Hooked: 99 Ways to Make Him Ache for You If you want to spare yourself a lot of heartbreaks in the future read both books!

Subtly- and not so subtly- abusive 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I tried to read through the whole book- really, I did- but it felt like I was continually getting a shot to the stomach just for being a woman. I asked my fiance to take a look at this book. He laughed and said he had met guys like this in college; really smart guys who had trouble getting a date and who blamed it on the women. He suggested I throw it out, but I'm going to take the book next to a female therapist (Dr. of Psychology) I know, and see what she says.
