Editorial Review:

Joanne Koenig Coste, now a renowned pioneer in implementing positive methods of caring for Alzheimer's patients, began to develop her groundbreaking approach when her middle-aged husband was diagnosed with progressive dementia shortly after the birth of her fourth child. As she struggled to care for him and their family, she recognized that it was possible to avoid some of the tremendous emotional burdens Alzheimer's patients and their care providers endure during the course of the disease. In this book Koenig Coste explains the five tenets of her "habilitation" approach, an accessible and comprehensive plan proven to have worked with thousands of patients and care providers.
Refuting long-accepted ideas, she calls for care "partners" to join patients in their current sense of place or time; to encourage patients to use their remaining skills to support their sense of independence and dignity; and, most of all, to continue communicating with patients by focusing on their emotional "language."
Learning to Speak Alzheimer's also offers hundreds of practical tips to ease life for everyone involved with Alzheimer's, including how to

- cope with the diagnosis and figure out if the patient wants to discuss it
- respectfully stop the person from driving
- make meal and bath times as pleasant as possible
- adjust room design and lighting for the patient's comfort
- deal with wandering, paranoia, and aggression
- establish a plan of care

Learning to Speak Alzheimer's revolutionizes the way we perceive and deal with Alzheimer's disease.

Editorial Review:

Cancer can now be cured, not just treated! We are not accustomed to thinking about a cure for cancer. We think of remission as the only possibility. But this book is not about remission. It is about a cure. This is possible because in 1990 Dr. Clark discovered the true cause of cancer. The cause is a certain parasite, for which I have found evidence in every cancer case regardless of the type of cancer. So lung cancer is not caused by smoking, colon cancer is not caused by a low roughage diet, breast cancer is not caused by a fatty diet, retinal blastoma is not caused b y a rare gene, and pancreatic cancer is not caused by alcohol consumption. Although these are all contributing factors, they are not THE cause. Once the true cause was found the cure became obvious. but would it work? I set a goal of 100 cases to be cured of cancer before publishing my findings. That mark was passed in December 1992. The discovery of the cause and cure of all cancers has stood the test of time and here it is!

New age pseudoscientific nonsense... 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 25 people found this review helpful.

...the "thinking cap" exercise is my favorite -- there's a photo showing some young girl pulling her ear lobes down almost to her collar bone!...the accompanying text claims that such yanking on the ear lobes stimulates "energy sites" in a manner analogous to acupuncture and facilitates thinking...ouch!...I think I'll pass on that one!...and the "energy yawn"??...or the "calf pump"??...no doubt there are reams of scientific research supporting such "techniques" for stimulating thought -- they're just not on this planet...personally, I think you should save your money and attend some of Ms. Hannaford's presentations at the "New Thought Center of Hawaii" where, over the years, she has presented such enlightening seminars as "The Cosmic Order of Sound" and "The Heartful Experience Sufi Dancing at night"...or maybe go out and buy some nice crystals and incense...but whatever you chose, don't waste money on this book.

informative but "wordy" 4 out of 5 stars.

This book contains some excellent information, but i would recommend the abridged version. I don't feel the personal lives & quirks of all of the scientists involved in the story added any insight to this pandemic.

The Great Influenza 5 out of 5 stars.

I liked this book it is a big thick book that takes a long time to read. If you enjoy history and you know it repeats itself. It is an interesting book to buy.

A Hot Read 5 out of 5 stars.

A detailed look at the horrible influenza epidemic that decimated not only the United States but most of the world in 1918, killing tens of millions and sickening many more. An excellent job of explaining the biological and medical complexities of the disease, detailing the history of often shoddy medical education in the United States, and relating the Spanish flu's human and emotional toll through vivid anecdotes of personal hardship and horror. The book reads well as a medical detective story and history, and also presents a useful lesson on the falsehoods routinely issued by government leaders and newspapers in the United States in a misguided effort to keep morale "positive," theoretically to help the war effort.

One for your library 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This was a great book, a bit hard for a non scientific person, but still great. It is well written by a very knowledgeable person that seems to care. It should be Oprah's book of the month. It you eat, have kids or are concerned about health, then this is the book for you. I do have to warn you, some parts are pretty scary. It was amazing to find out all of the things the government doesn't tell us about our food supply. I can speak to this because I was diagnosed with MS in March of 07' and now I'm aspartame and MS free. I gave up that poison a few months ago and my MS went away within 2 weeks!!!

Real-life experience backs this up 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have had this book for many years and recently skimmed it again. I bought it during the years when my husband was having bizarre symptoms after eating almost any kind of food. He visited many doctors and specialists, and an allergist finally suggested that it might be MSG and referred him to a dietician (who was useless). Since then, we've been on our own fighting this, and this book lifted the fog of ignorance!

I'm an engineer, a conservative and a skeptic. I was not ready to believe that there is "bad stuff" in our everyday food. But based on my husband's experiences, the empirical evidence to the contrary is overwhelming. His symptoms initially only occurred after lunch but not after dinner, even if he ate the same thing. How does this make sense? Dr. Blaylock explains the mystery by pointing out how hypoglycemia exacerbates the effects of glutamate. I was ecstatic when I understood the phenomenon. My husband has a tendency, common in his family, toward hypoglycemia. With lunch being his first meal of the day, he was already in a hypoglycemic state and highly susceptible to the effects of MSG. By dinnertime, his brain had more glucose and was better able to clear the glutamate. Based on this theory, when he accidentally eats MSG and starts to experience the effects, he consumes a candy bar or sugared soda and it lessens the symptoms. (Dessert can be good for you!)

The explanations in this book are the only ones that satisfactorily explain what I see my husband go through every day. He has an immediate and recognizable response to glutamate, which makes confirmation of those theories simple, if not painless.

There is one hypothesis in the book that is contradicted by my husband's experience. He can consume aspartame (diet soda) with none of the effects that he experiences from glutamate.

I wonder how many people are capable of making the lifestyle changes required to avoid glutamate? If you don't have a detector (like my poor husband) to tell you what food does and does not have glutamate in it, you must avoid all prepared food that doesn't have an ingredient list. Yes, sadly, glutamate is that prevalent in our food.

1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The format of this book is a little tricky, and it took me a few days to gain a comprehensive overview. However, this book does offer a lot of good information about the assessment and treatment plan writing process, including some examples. All in all, a useful book to add to your home library as a reference guide if you are a worker in the mental health field, or student.

Very good for ideas 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an easy reference book for writing psych-evals and residential school reports. Great for jogging your memory when you think you have run out of words...However, I bought the accompanying CD, it is not in any way helpful...

Great 4 out of 5 stars.

The book was in excellent condition as stated, and arrived a day or two later than normal, but that was fine.

Editorial Review:

Updated and expanded to be fully compatible with the DSM-IV, this popular guidebook is designed to facilitate and improve the writing of psychological reports. In a highly accessible format, it provides an exhaustive checklist of words and phrases that enables clinicians to quickly select the appropriate terms to describe almost every clinical situation.

Terrific 5 out of 5 stars.

I've tried Dale Dubin on three different occasions and always gave up midway. This book is easy to read, keeps up your interest, doesn't clog you with unnecessary information, has a good summary at the end of every chapter, good clinical examples are provided and the best part is that it is quite funny. I actually laughed out aloud where he says wolff-parkinson-white and lown-ganong-levine aren't the names of lawfirms!
I managed to finish it in two weeks and it is refreshing to come across an ekg book that doesn't make you want to take extended break times!
Only thing is I wish the author had used more arrows to point out the specific abnormalities and that the last section of practice EKGS was a little more comprehensive.
But I think it is a good resource for residents and students. And I would pick it over Dale Dubin anyday.

Editorial Review:

Now in its updated Fifth Edition, this popular and practical text presents all the information clinicians need to use the EKG in everyday practice and interpret hypertrophy and enlargement, arrhythmias, conduction blocks, pre-excitation syndromes, and myocardial infarction. It is an ideal reference for medical students in ICM courses, house officers, or anyone directly involved in patient care, whether student, teacher, or practitioner. The book features more than 200 facsimiles of EKG strips and numerous case studies and clinical examples. This Fifth Edition includes updated information on pacemakers and myocardial infarction treatment and more practice EKGs.
