This book was a life saver for me. I was in an abuse marriage and the insight from the book was very valuable. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

'Really brilliant ...I absolutely related to it' - Marian Keyes, "Mail on Sunday". Is having 'somebody to love' the most important thing in your life? Do you constantly believe that with 'the right man' you would no longer feel depressed or lonely? Are you bored with 'nice guys' who are open, honest and dependable? If being in love means being in pain, this book was written for you. Therapist Robin Norwood describes loving too much as a pattern of thoughts and behaviour, which certain women develop as a response to problems from childhood. Many women find themselves repeatedly drawn into unhappy and destructive relationships with men. They then struggle to make these doomed relationships work. This bestselling book takes a hard look at how powerfully addictive these unhealthy relationships are - but also gives a very specific programme for recovery from the disease of loving too much. 'A life-changing book for women' - Erica Jong.

not a useful book 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I was asked to get this book by my therapist for use in my therapy. I think that this book does more harm then good. While the homework sheets could perhaps be useful, the overall book is written for the therapist. While most training manuals need to be written dispassionately and for general use. This book, frankly, lacks humanity. It generalizes about people with BPD to the extreme, allowing for no middle ground. I also find the large title to be violating of my privacy.

True Believer is a Patient 5 out of 5 stars.

And that's me. I've been taking a class/group for months on the practices of Dr. Linehan. Of course, this was taught by an awesome doctor and an advanced degree student (who is definately going to make the world a much happier place). All of this combined, this workbook (which the class works out of) is happily, lifechanging. After almost 5 years of suffering with PTSD and depression suffered from injuries in a car accident, only these past few months working through this theory, I feel like my life is coming back now. My family is happier, my life is happier, I am happier. Find a therapist who CAN work with you through this theory and most everyone will benefit with a more positive and happier YOU! Good luck! It works!

Editorial Review:

A vital component in Linehan's comprehensive treatment program, this manual details precisely how to implement DBT behavioral skills training procedures. Included are over three dozen invaluable patient handouts and homework sheets. Clinicians may recommend this book for client purchase or can photocopy patient materials and distribute them as needed.

A Disappointing Book 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The fact that the body remembers the psychological injuries inflicted on the mind is not new. What I found very disappointing and almost incredible is the fact that the author draws up a list of possible abuses and puts at the same level the trauma of a painful surgery and the emotional or/and sexual abuse of a child mistreated by her parents for years. The book is simplistic and first of all sends the wrong message to people who carries deep emotional wounds. It is close to the superficial self-help books that claim that they can solve your problems once and for all. This must be untrue given the huge number of books of this kind, all of them promising what they do not deliver. And the reader who needs serious help keeps buying the latest "secret" book that holds all the answers to your problems.

Editorial Review:

Nature's Lessons in Healing Trauma...

Waking the Tiger offers a new and hopeful vision of trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity. It asks and answers an intriguing question: why are animals in the wild, though threatened routinely, rarely traumatized? By understanding the dynamics that make wild animals virtually immune to traumatic symptoms, the mystery of human trauma is revealed.

Waking the Tiger normalizes the symptoms of trauma and the steps needed to heal them. People are often traumatized by seemingly ordinary experiences. The reader is taken on a guided tour of the subtle, yet powerful impulses that govern our responses to overwhelming life events. To do this, it employs a series of exercises that help us focus on bodily sensations. Through heightened awareness of these sensations trauma can be healed.

Editorial Review:

If you read only one book after you are diagnosed with diabetes, make it The First Year--Type 2 Diabetes

Gretchen Becker was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1996. Since then she has educated herself on every aspect of this chronic condition--by reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors, using the Internet to communicate daily with other people who have diabetes, and by listening to her own body. Now, as a "patient-expert," she guides all those newly diagnosed step-by-step through their first year with diabetes. In a unique format, The First Year--Type 2 Diabetes walks you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and each subsequent month of The First Year.

nice book 5 out of 5 stars.

this book is good for fast review before USMLE. biochemistry should be learnd from Devlin.

Superb...In every Way 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Attributes:
1. Wonderfully written in a lucid and point-of-fact manner w/minimal fluff.
2. The correlations are clearly laid out and a must for sensing the overall picture.
3. Fantastic diagrams and there are plenty of them.
4. Entire text is also accessible online which is very important for me because I can cut and paste the stuff and further abridge the contents of the book.
5. Easily readable from cover to cover.....and doing so multiple times is a really good way to encompass the entire width of the subject.
6. Very succinct chapter reviews at the end of each chapter which would satisfy the USMLE Step 1 needs I would think.

I for one am using this for my med-school biochem class and it is a veritable feast of biochem knowledge w/o being mentally bludgeoned by our prescribed text at AUC which is Lehninger.

I only wish the authors were able to write an entire textbook. A bridge between Lehninger and this guide. I for one would buy it in a heart-beat.

Thank you Dr's. Harvey, Champe and Ferrier...a superb and well executed effort.

Editorial Review:

This popular study guide and review provide a quick survey of the field of biochemistry, covering the essentials that students need to know. Includes board-type questions to give students experience for what they will encounter in actual examinations. Now thoroughly revised and updated throughout, with much new material on cholesterol and steroid metabolism, nutrition and protein synthesis. Plus, the authors have included a unique cross-referencing system to the book's companion volume, Harvey and Champe's Lippincott's Illustrated Review of Pharmacology.

Hands down the best book on this topic..... 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I've always been a fan of this author, he is a scholar, excellent writer and based on his writing a wise individual. What makes this book especially good from my perspective is the balancing of subjective information from the world's wisdom traditions and his own interior experience with their physical correlates i.e. rigorous science without reducing either to the other. This is extremely refreshing and this carefully researched book adopts an attitude of openness, curiosity and wonder.

In addition, THE MINDFUL BRAIN is NOT written soley for academically minded individuals or psychologists. It is very readable by any intelligent layperson and extremely engaging. It is theoritical, but also compellingly practical in the spirit of Parenting From the Inside Out, which I highly recommend as well.

I also The Developing Mind: How Relationships and the Brain Interact to Shape Who We Are is an incredible book. However, this is much less accessible to the average person than this volume and the one in the proceeding paragraph.

More concisely, what Daniel Siegel has done is brought together what we know from the various contemplative traditions, mind-body medicine and neuroscience together in a compelling argument for the value of mindfulness to everyday life, happiness and health. I would think this would be something everyone would be interested in.

While it's a wonderful adaptation to be able to think ahead, plan, etc. This often carries one out of the HERE and NOW moment and keeps us on a treadmill of postponing our fulfillment. This book is about balancing our ability to look forward while remaining anchored in the present... the only place where love, happiness and peace could be found.

I work in this area and have graduate education in biology, biochemistry and psychology. This is my life's passion and I own many books on this topic and present workshops. This is in many ways the book I wish I had written although humbly I must admit Daniel Siegel would be an extremely difficult person to top. Hopefully, however, someday I will be able to add value by complimenting his and other people's good work.

Editorial Review:

An exploration of the nature of our mind, from the inside out, by a leading neurobiologist.

Over the last twenty years, there has been growing attention in the Western world to mindfulness—paying attention to life in the present moment. Here, Daniel J. Siegel investigates the phenomenon of mindfulness as it impacts our daily lives, offering readers insight into personal relationships, emotional behavior, parenting, and work.

IT WORKS!!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

After 6 years, this book made the difference. I just have to share this with anyone and everyone who is trying to conceive and having difficulty. I think it's important you know my fertility background.

I am now 35 years old, about 178lbs now, my husband is 36 and we have been TTC for 6 years and 2 months. About 16 months in, I decided to quit a very stressful job (which I believed was a major factor in my inability to conceive) and we conceived but I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks. I was beyond devastated. To try for so long only to lose our first hope was crushing. I went back to work at a less stressful job about 8 months later.

We did all of the standard testing, some multiple times, over the years. I had an HSG to see if my tubes were blocked. My husband's sperm was tested. I went to an endocrinologist who said I was borderline PCOS (with no cysts). So I tried Metformin. We tried several natural methods like the Creighton Model System with which you chart your cervical mucus to track your most fertile times, etc. I also went to a naturalist who helped me with anxiety with Adrenal Stress End (a miracle supplement!), but the Progesterone cream and Chasteberry herbs he suggested did not help me conceive. I even moved my bedroom around and of course we tried every position and I even tried standing on my head! Hey, when you're desperate, you'll do anything! We were diagnosed with Unexplained Infertility. The only diagnostic thing I did not do was a laparoscopy.

Well, that was about the worst thing to me. If nothing was wrong, and so there's nothing to fix, what do you do next? I really didn't want to try Clomid or ART. I wanted to become pregnant naturally if possible. I was afraid of the side effects of Clomid and the expense and toll ART would take on my mind and my body. But finally in Oct. '06 I felt like we had no choice but to start trying something else, so I took Letrozole (like Clomid) for 3 months. I had the worst possible experience with it. I had every side effect including panic attacks and no baby. By Dec. I decided that was enough. My job had become more stressful and after so long without conceiving I had a discussion with my husband about putting trying for a family first. I quit my job again and worked hard on eating better and losing some weight. Also reading and meditating and really trying to relax (that evil word!) and get healthy.

We made a plan that at the end of summer we would start ART if we still hadn't conceived naturally. Then in early July I happened upon this book online "The Infertility Cure" by Randine Lewis, Ph.D. I bought the book and began reading immediately. TCM is based on the theory that whatever problem you have is based on a whole body imbalance. And when you fix the imbalance, the problem will correct itself. They don't treat symptoms with medicine. They treat the problem that causes the symptoms (an imbalance) with diet, herbs, and acupuncture mostly.

Finally! Something that would address the imbalance in me that was causing infertility! There is a questionnaire in the book that lists 5 pages of "symptoms" that then tell you where the imbalance lies. And then it tells you specifically what to do to fix it! She said it normally takes 3 - 6 months for your body to come into balance. I had 3 months until ART was to start. I figured I'd do the recommendations in the book and then if we still hadn't conceived, ART would be in place ready to go. I put forth full effort. I jokingly said I wanted a "free baby!", so I put my health first. I found a Chinese acupuncturist (something my ART doctors highly recommend) who specializes in infertility. She said she actually uses the questionnaire in this book when someone comes to her for infertility. I filled it out, read the book, and started the dietary guidelines immediately. Which for me was to cut out dairy, wheat and high-sugar foods, not to eat cold foods, to do things like warm foot soaks and femoral artery massage to stimulate blood flow to the uterus. I had my first acupuncture treatment for fertility on day 24 of my cycle (last Wednesday).

Yesterday, I had a positive result for a pregnancy test!! Over 6 long years of negative results, broken dreams and self-doubt. I believed there was a natural way to allow me to conceive. And I finally found it. I never even took any of the herbs. I didn't get a chance! Ladies, I can't tell you, this was the easiest thing I did over the 6 years of trying. Please, before you take medical drugs or start ART, try this. Even if you need ART because of a medical problem, this book teaches you easily how to get your body in the best possible place it can be for conception to occur. I cannot recommend it enough for obvious reasons.

I know first hand the frustration and sadness that not being able to conceive brings. I pray for anyone who is looking for the answers that I was to see this and give it a try. I pray that anyone who reads this will also send out a little prayer for us that this pregnancy continues and that I am able to give birth to a beautiful healthy child that we have been waiting for, for so long. I will pray for all who read this to share in the success that we have had!

Editorial Review:

This highly effective programme for women struggling to become pregnant draws on the proven, centuries-old techniques of traditional Chinese medicine to cure infertility. Dr Lewis explains in clear, accessible prose how any woman can identify the imbalances in her body - and how these imbalances can then be treated with a simple plan that entails lifestyle changes, diet, herbs and acupressure. On its own or in conjunction with traditional Western medical treatments, THE INFERTILITY CURE offers women hope - and what they desire most: a healthy baby.

Thank YOU Dr. Bernstein! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was a wellspring of information for me as a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic. Getting off the cycle of being told to eat complex carbs, seeing my blood glucose spike from doing just what I was told, and getting medications increased again and again, I read what Dr. Bernstein said with interest. After trying his recommendations I can say with no reservations that this book may have saved my life! I highly recommend it to anyone who has pre-diabetes or diabetes and hope that the general medical community opens their eyes. After only one day of this diet my blood glucose readings were close to normal, and continue to stay there, with less medication. My energy levels are high and I have felt better than I have in a long long time. Kudos to you Dr. Bernstein, for daring to say the truth! I recommend both his books and also Dr. Atkins Diabetes Revolution to anyone who wants to learn about diabetes and diet.

Editorial Review:
