Very useful 5 out of 5 stars.

This is so much easier than carrying the huge book around. It is short and sweet. I do have to refer to "the big one" from time to time, but love this little thing!

Worth the money 5 out of 5 stars.

It is exactly what it says, a quick reference. If you are buying it for clinical work for quick referencing in staff meetings it is perfect however it does not replace the full DSM for thorough case studies. If you need a quick and small reference, I would suggest buying this book.

Editorial Review:

The Quick Reference to the Diagnostic Criteria From DSM-IV-TR® is a handy, low priced companion to the ultimate psychiatric reference, DSM-IV-TR®. It includes all the diagnostic criteria from DSM-IV-TR® in an easy-to-use, paperback format.

In making DSM-IV diagnosis, clinicians and researchers may find it convenient to consult the Quick Reference to the Diagnostic Criteria From DSM-IV-TR®, a pocket sized book that contains the classification, the diagnosis criteria, and a listing of the most important conditions to be considered in a differential diagnosis for each category.

Great Buy 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a Physician Assistant Student and i have to admit that every semester we are required to buy books and at the end of every semester i sell my books buy. This was the only one i did not sell back. Its great for a person who is beginning the medical field and is great for someone who just wants to brush up on technique. The CD located in the back of the books is really not that helpful because it skips critical parts of the physical exam however its good to see how to do certain things. Most of the books chapters are well organized except for the HEENT chapter bc its all over the place. However i LOVE my Bates and i still use it on clinical rotations.

Not good at all! 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I read this book twenty something years ago. I have family problems. Don't we all? My parents let me down in many ways, and so did my siblings.

But this book left me feeling that my problems were someone else's fault. I no longer had to feel responsible for my own thoughts, decisions and actions. Fact is, shame is there for a reason. It makes me aware that I am guilty. I can't do anything about my guilt. Only God can. And he did. He sent his son Jesus to die in my place and take away my guilt. I am forgiven. I am loved by a perfect Father.

I was raised in a Christian home. I knew about God's love in my head. But as a college student I read Bradshaw's book. It was at a time when I was suffering from my parents' bitter divorce. Because I got so caught up into focusing on their sins and blaming them, and rejecting any shame I felt from my own misconduct, I couldn't grow.

So stay away from this book. Or at least if you read it, you will need a good dose of truth to help you deal with the lies in Bradshaw's book. I think he meant well. But he's way off base. The truth will set you free. This stuff will bind you for a long, long, time!

Editorial Review:

In an emotionally revealing way John Bradshaw shows us how toxic shame is the core problem in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and the drive to super-achieve. The result is a breakdown in the family system and our inability to go forward with our lives. We are bound by our shame.

Drawing from his 22 years of experience as a counselor, Bradshaw offers us the techniques to heal this shame. Using affirmations, visualizations, "inner voice" and "feeling" work plus guided meditations and other useful healing techniques, he realeases the shame that binds us to the past.

This important book breaks new ground in the core issues of societal and personal breakdown, offering techniques of recovery vital to all of us.

Editorial Review:

Puzzles and brain twisters to keep your mind sharp and your memory intact are all the rage today. More and more people -- Baby Boomers and information workers in particular -- are becoming concerned about their gray matter's ability to function, and with good reason. As this sensible and entertaining guide points out, your brain is easily your most important possession. It deserves proper upkeep. Your Brain: The Missing Manual is a practical look at how to get the most out of your brain -- not just how the brain works, but how you can use it more effectively. What makes this book different than the average self-help guide is that it's grounded in current neuroscience. You get a quick tour of several aspects of the brain, complete with useful advice about: Brain Food: The right fuel for the brain and how the brain commands hunger (including an explanation of the different chemicals that control appetite and cravings) Sleep: The sleep cycle and circadian rhythm, and how to get a good night's sleep (or do the best you can without it) Memory: Techniques for improving your recall Reason: Learning to defeat common sense; logical fallacies (including tactics for winning arguments); and good reasons for bad prejudices Creativity and Problem-Solving: Brainstorming tips and thinking not outside the box, but about the box -- in other words, find the assumptions that limit your ideas so you can break through them Understanding Other People's Brains: The battle of the sexes and babies developing brains

Learn about the built-in circuitry that makes office politics seem like a life-or-death struggle, causes you to toss important facts out of your memory if they're not emotionally charged, andencourages you to eat huge amounts of high-calorie snacks. With Your Brain: The Missing Manual you'll discover that, sometimes, you can learn to compensate for your brain or work around its limitations -- or at least to accept its eccentricities. Exploring your brain is the greatest adventure and biggest mystery you'll ever face. This guide has exactly the advice you need.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I own the 2nd ed. and am looking forward to owning the 3rd. This was recommended to me when I first started Critical Care (CC) Nursing 6 years ago and I have yet to find anything even close. I love the fact a physician wrote it. The information is much more clear than any CC nursing text/book I have bought. ... and I have tons. It follows more closely to the medical model, not a nursing format... ie. it doesn't include nursing diagnosis or nursing care. I feel much more confident discussing patients with colleagues, families and patients after looking up my facts in this book. As mentioned in other reviews, some may not think of this as a 'quick reference' book, but I know if I have it with me I am always referring to it. It's heavy because the print is large (also mentioned in other reviews) making it thick, but really is quite concise in all it's explanations. I would purchase this book for anyone involved in Critical Care.

Editorial Review:

This best-selling resource provides a general overview and basic information for all adult intensive care units. The material is presented in a brief and quick-access format which allows for topic and exam review. It provides enough detailed and specific information to address most all questions and problems that arise in the ICU. Emphasis on fundamental principles in the text should prove useful for patient care outside the ICU as well. New chapters in this edition include hyperthermia and hypothermia syndromes; infection control in the ICU; and severe airflow obstruction. Sections have been reorganized and consolidated when appropriate to reinforce concepts. Purchase of The ICU Book, Third Edition gives you free access to a Website featuring links from references to PubMed, updated regularly; and a directory of Websites handpicked by Dr. Marino.

Editorial Review:

A groundbreaking and controversial narrative investigation into the science, history, medical politics, and patient experience of Lyme disease told by a science journalist whose entire family contracted the disease.Pamela Weintraub paints a nuanced picture of the intense controversy and crippling uncertainty surrounding Lyme disease and sheds light on one of the angriest medical disputes raging today.  She also reveals her personal odyssey through the land of Lyme after she, her husband and their two sons became seriously ill with the disease beginning in the 1990s. From the microbe causing the infection and the definition of the disease, to the length and type of treatment and the kind of practitioner needed, Lyme is a hotbed of contention. With a CDC-estimated 200,000-plus new cases of Lyme disease a year, it has surpassed both AIDS and TB as the fastest-spreading infectious disease in the U.S. Yet alarmingly, in many cases, because the disease often eludes blood tests and not all patients exhibit the classic "bulls-eye" rash and swollen joints, doctors are woefully unable or unwilling to diagnose Lyme. When that happens, once-treatable infections become chronic, inexorably disseminating to cause disabling conditions that may never be cured. Weintraub reveals why the Lyme epidemic has been allowed to explode, why patients are dismissed, and what can be done to raise awareness in the medical community and find a cure. The most comprehensive book ever written about the past, present and future of Lyme disease, this exposes the ticking clock of a raging epidemic.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Louis Ignarro discovered "the atom" of cardiovascular health--a tiny molecule called Nitric Oxide. NO, as it is known by chemists, is a signaling molecule produced by the body, and is a vasodilator that helps control blood flow to every part of the body. Dr. Ignarro's findings led to the development of Viagra. Nitric Oxide has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system as well.NO relaxes and enlarges the blood vessels, prevents blood clots that trigger strokes and heart attacks, and regulates blood pressure and the accumulation of plaque in the blood vessels. Dr. Ignarro's current research indicates that Nitric Oxide may help lower cholesterol by facilitating the actions of statin drugs like Lipitor. The goal of the regimen presented in NO More Heart Disease is to age proof the cardiovascular system, keeping the vascular network clean and elastic through enhanced NO productivity. The plan is easy-to-follow without extreme lifestyle adjustments, involving taking supplements to stimulate Nitric Oxide production, incorporating NO friendly food into the diet, and a moderate exercise program.

A must for any teacher 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am not a professional reviewer, so in simple terms... this writer does an excellent job of covering the history of writing and reading. She makes it interesting, even if you don't like history. She does an excellent job on the science of how the brain works regarding reading. Again, she does an excellent job even if you don't like science.

I believe this is a must have for any teacher. To understand how minds work and how reading and the brain really go together. It is a very interesting book and you will learn a lot from it.

Editorial Review:

"Human beings were never born to read," writes Tufts University cognitive neuroscientist and child development expert Maryanne Wolf. Reading is a human invention that reflects how the brain rearranges itself to learn something new. In this ambitious, provocative book, Wolf chronicles the remarkable journey of the reading brain not only over the past five thousand years, since writing began, but also over the course of a single child's life, showing in the process why children with dyslexia have reading difficulties and singular gifts.

Lively, erudite, and rich with examples, Proust and the Squid asserts that the brain that examined the tiny clay tablets of the Sumerians was a very different brain from the one that is immersed in today's technology-driven literacy. The potential transformations in this changed reading brain, Wolf argues, have profound implications for every child and for the intellectual development of our species.

Pleased with the results... 5 out of 5 stars.

A friend loaned me her copy of this book. I have since bought two copies...one for me and one that I gave to my doctor. I have been doing the diet in the book for 6 months now, and I haven't had any migraines. I was having 4 to 5 a month. I got off my Topamax and my birth control pills, and I stopped taking Imitrex. I feel like a new person. Thank goodness for this book. I don't know what I would have done without it! I loaned it to a friend, and it has helped her too. Just try it....you have nothing to lose!

Editorial Review:

Based on the breakthrough understanding that virtually all headaches are forms of migraine--because migraine is not a specific type of headache, but the built-in mechanism that causes headaches of all kinds, along with neck stiffness, sinus congestion, dizziness, and other problems--Dr. Buchholz's Heal Your Headache puts headache sufferers back in control of their lives with a simple, transforming program: Step 1: Avoid the "Quick Fix." Too often painkillers only make matters worse because of the crippling complication known as rebound. Step 2: Reduce Your Triggers. The crux of the program: a migraine diet that eliminates the foods that push headache sufferers over the top. Step 3: Raise Your Threshold. When diet and other lifestyle changes aren't enough, preventive medication can help stay the course.

That's it: in three steps turn your headache problems around.
