Editorial Review:

A superbly entertaining, wide-ranging investigation of wood through history, culture, art, and science

We build our houses with it, burn it for warmth, carve it for beauty, sail in it, sit on it, play with it, and fight with it—yet how much do we really understand about the history and culture of wood? In this rich and fascinating book, Harvey Green examines how wood in all its variety of form and function has contributed to an extraordinary range of human endeavors.

Wood reveals the history and culture of a substance that has been a central part of human life throughout the world for thousands of years. From the prized whorls of bird’s-eye maple to the oak and pine that made navies and empires, from the breathtaking stave churches of Norway to the enduring popularity of the Windsor chair, from the magic of turning to the grace of a Chinese chair, and from the botany of the baseball bat to the stunning carving of Native Americans of the northwest coast, Wood decodes how a seemingly common material has come to signal class, status, and authenticity. Using the historian’s craft and the woodworker’s hand, Green has fashioned an authoritative book sure to interest all who love this amazing material, appreciate its history, and care about its future.

Great Step by Step using Tile 5 out of 5 stars.
34 of 35 people found this review helpful.

This book covers all kinds of tile work, including tiling a floor, wainscotting, fireplaces, backsplashes, showers, countertops...just about everything. It even has a chapter on installing glass tile and tile repairs.

This book was fantastic! It has photos of all the steps, great explanations and a section with Q&A's and oftentimes a section called "What Can Go Wrong". I reviewed a different tile book which I purchased prior to this one, (see all my reviews), but this one made up for my disappointment with the previous book.

If you are looking for a book on tile, I highly recommend it. Very colorful, easy to read and understand. I have not bought another tile book after finding this one. It covers everything.

Editorial Review:

Few building materials can match tile for durability, beauty, design -- and increasingly, popularity. This book combines an inspiring diversity of design ideas with well-illustrated, pro-level installation and repair techniques. Tiling begins with a full range of design inspiration and options, with chapters on the characteristics, pros, and cons of different types of tile. Included here is a varied selection of completed installations, both indoor and outdoor. Next come the details on tools and materials required for different projects. This part of the book contains trade secrets, tool-buying tips, common techniques, and safety procedures-all designed to help readers get the most professional results possible. The remainder is taken up with specific projects based on the authors' extensive installation and repair experience. Using a highly visual approach, this section enables them to follow a project from start to finish through concisely captioned step-by-step photos.

Editorial Review:

The comprehensive guide to construction tolerances, newly revised and updated

How much may a steel frame be out of plumb? What are the expected variations of a precast concrete panel? What is required to successfully detail finish materials on masonry?

Updating and expanding on its popular first edition, the Handbook of Construction Tolerances, Second Edition remains the only comprehensive reference to the thousands of industry standard tolerances for the manufacture, fabrication, and installation of construction materials and components-- including all-important accumulated dimensional variations.

Covering new materials and techniques developed since the book was first published, the Second Edition of this easy-to-use reference features:
* More than 100 drawings illustrating the tolerance concepts
* New sections on measuring compliance with tolerance standards; right-of-way construction; autoclaved aerated concrete; tilt-up concrete panels; interior stone wall cladding; structural insulated panels; decorative architectural glass; laminated architectural flat glass and bent glass
* New guidelines on how to incorporate tolerance requirements in drawings and specifications
* New information on how to apply tolerance information during contract administration

With the Handbook, architects, engineers, contractors, interior designers, lawyers, and others involved in the construction industry will be armed with the information they need to design and detail more accurately, write better specifications, establish normal practice and standards of care, supervise construction, settle worksite disputes, and save time and money at every stage of building.

Editorial Review:

Produced at a rate of five billion cubic yards per year, concrete is the second most widely consumed substance on earth, after water. It is ubiquitous and easily taken for granted as the stuff of sidewalks and roads, power plants and parking garages. Concrete is also, however, a favored material of cutting-edge architects and engineers, who value not only its versatility and strength but its unlimited potential for imaginative expression. A hybrid substance made from cement, water, sand, and mineral aggregates, concrete—or liquid stone—has no intrinsic form. In the hands of talented designers, its ultimate appearance is dictated by the framework into which it is poured and the color, texture, or pattern applied to its surface.

In a series of essays by top architects, engineers, and scholars, Liquid Stone explores the nature of concrete, its past and future, from technical, artistic, and historical perspectives. Over thirty buildings by leading international architects including Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron, Zaha Hadid, Steven Holl, Norman Foster, and Santiago Calatrava are presented through detailed descriptions, photographs, and technical drawings.

The book concludes with "The Future of Concrete," a chapter on newly emerging materials. Here self-consolidated, ultra-high-performance, and translucent concrete are illustrated, introducing the next generation in concrete technology and suggesting new directions for both architecture and engineering.

Lacks depth... 3 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I'm a practicing engineer in Oregon. I have studied and reviewed concrete foundations for 5-6 years, and this book is lacking in quality depth - particularly with examples. If one wants to go into a graduate-level understanding of reinforced concrete design, this book will leave you disappointed due to the lack of example problems, clear and concise descriptions, and overall quality. James MacGregor's book is far more "complete". The plus for this book is that it at least attempts to cover retaining and foundation structures, but still lacks quality example problems to illustrate what is not too obvious within the ACI code. Quantity is a 5 star, quality is a 2 star, therefore I've given this a 3 star review.

Editorial Review:

An introductory book presenting the theories, ACI Code requirements and design of reinforced concrete beams, slabs, columns, footings, retaining walls, bearing walls, prestressed concrete sections, and framework in a clear and understandable manner.

Excellent guide 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Having never built a kiln before this book is an invaluable source for how to construct a pottery kiln. The only reason I gave it four rather than five stars is that it is a British book and the metric system and refractories used are based on what is common in England and different to what is commonly available in America but the techniques and methods can be used for American products with success. I am very pleased with the content as there is no other book that is so clear in explaining step by step, brick by brick how to construct a kiln.

Editorial Review:

Building one's own kiln can be a daunting prospect, with the potential for numerous missteps along the way. This book aims to give confidence to those who seek to build their own kilns. Kiln Construction is a user-friendly guide that offers a thorough grounding in the basics of construction and also in-depth examinations of three kiln types--gas, oil, and woodfired--with diagrams and photos showing every step in the process. These designs have been thoroughly tried and tested and are in regular use by well-known potters. Comprehensive information on methods, materials, fuels, and kiln furniture is provided as well.

Emphasizing practicality at every step in the process, this book will aid potters who are ready to build their own kilns and wish to gain both a greater understanding of kilns and more control and flexibility in their work. This approach will help readers navigate the difficult but rewarding process of kiln building.

Editorial Review:

What constitutes a high-rise building? A high-rise is, in fact, any building with more than 9 storeys and not just those striking skyscrapers which shape modern city skylines. In the past architects who designed such structures used to be the exception but in the last 10 years more and more architectural offices have begun to focus on this type of building. However, the sheer complexity of designing and planning the construction of a high-rise as opposed to other building types requires a wealth of specialized experience and expertise. The High-Rise Manual is the first comprehensive reference work on this subject. All relevant aspects of such an undertaking are examined in detail by some 24 specialist authors. Each step is extensively documented including the initial project planning, the building organisation, the laying of the foundations, the supporting structure, the building technology, the office design, and the Facility Management. Theoretical contributions present the basic principles of select

Editorial Review:

The sixth edition of this bestselling textbook provides the same philosophical approach that has gained wide acceptance since the first edition was published in 1965. The strength and behavior of concrete elements are treated with the primary objective of explaining and justifying the rules and formulas of the ACI Building Code. The treatment is incorporated into the chapters in such a way that the reader may study the concepts in a logical sequence in detail or merely accept a qualitative explanation and proceed directly to the design process using the ACI Code. Detailed numerical examples illustrate the general approach to design and analysis. The content of the new edition reflects the continuing change occuring in design procedures for reinforced concrete stuctures. Emphasis throughout is on the ACI approach involving strength and serviceability "limit states" and factored loads. The sixth edition of Reinforced Concrete Design incorporates the changes in design rules arising from the publication of the 1995 ACI Building Code and Commentary including the new rules for reinforcing bar development, design for torsion, revised provisions for the design of long columns, and the new minimum reinforcement for flexure provisions.

Professors will find that there is sufficient material for a two-semester sequence in reinforced concrete design, while practicing engineers will appreciate the text's comprehensive nature. For those professors and engineers who feel that an awareness of SI units is important, the SI version of the ACI Code equations appear in footnotes and some examples and problems are presented in SI units.

A permenant reference added to the industry's publications. 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

The auther has poured his knowledge of metal building systems into each chapter. The material is fresh and current. The auther addressed most of the problems encountered by metal building professionals. You will find examples of the current details and designs of metal buildings used throughout the USA. Also, this book provides a guidline of the important issues in metal buildings.

Editorial Review:

This book from an expert on metal building systems--the first an author unaffiliated with an industry trade group--offers important, valuable, and unbiased information that can save you money and time--and that may even save your building! Full of essential features, tips and advice, this guide goes beyond manufacturer-supplied information to warn you of potential design pitfalls and to point out specific recurring problems and failures of MBS drawn from actual experience. It provides specific help--unavailable elsewhere--with specifying and selecting secondary framing, walls, roofs, and much, much more. This is the one book that is a must-have for any professional involved with pre-engineered buildings.
