Not so impressive. 1 out of 5 stars.
15 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This book is written by various experience P.E. or Professors. It is not emphasis on practical calculation. There are very few example and definitions for formulars and related equation. If reader has no experience before, it would be very difficult to understand. Half of the book is devoted to bridge design, and it dose not provide enough information to design a bridge..

This is not really a how-to book.

Useful and comprehensive book for practitioners 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This book is very good for practitioners who need to look up something they have forgotten. It can be useful for beginning students, but as far as understanding concepts is concerned, MacGregor's is the best. For a beginner, Nilson's book sometimes gets too cluttered. MacGregor's book covers almost everything in Nilson's book, but with greater emphasis on conceptual understanding.

great book @great str. design informations 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

The twelfth edition of Design of Concrete Structures contains balanced coverage of important topics and is filled with applications that impart an "engineering" flavor, reflecting the authors' practical experience. This respected text leads the reader through a firm understanding of the behavior of reinforced concrete structure before it builds proficiency in the current methods of structural design practice. Particular reference is made to the American Concrete Institute Building Code, incorporating the 1995 ACI Code.

Editorial Review:

With grace, style, and gentle, self-deprecating wit, John Jerome describes the back-breaking but soul-mending task of building a stone wall on his New England farm. The job begins on a whim-he decides to move one from his woods for the sheer pleasure of seeing it from the house-and as the wall progresses, the physical occupation leads Jerome to philosophical preoccupation. Thus Stone Work, first published in 1989, becomes a discourse on the meaning of craft, the stolidness of work, the gifts of the seasons, and the complexities of being male and fifty-five. Jerome finds something pure in the lugging and the struggling with the stones, a clarity that leads him to insights into family ties, the tenuousness of nature's beauty, and his ongoing quest for fixity in a world of flux. "Maybe gravity is all the alignment one ever gets," he thinks as he pushes a stone into place, "and therefore all I ought to need. What more could one want, anyway, than the sure sense-right there, at any given moment for the noticing-of a straight line pointing toward the center of the earth?" While his wall isn't a masterwork-isn't even finished-his hands-on labor allows Jerome to grasp some elemental truths; with him we come to see the "riches, riches, everywhere, just for the paying of attention."

Editorial Review:

Since its first publication in 1963, Properties of Concrete has been internationally acclaimed as the definitive work of reference on the subject for both the professional and student engineer. The fourth edition has been completely rewritten and updated to reflect advances in concrete technology over the past decade, yet it still retains the original aim of Professor Neville’s book: to provide reliable, comprehensive and practical information on the properties and use of concrete, and the selection of mix proportions, all based on scientific observations and the author’s extensive engineering experience. The emphasis throughout is on understanding the behaviour of concrete and relating it to physical and chemical phenomena involved in the performance of the material in service. The overall effect is to give an integrated view of the properties of concrete so as to enable the reader to achieve the best possible construction in concrete. In addition, the scientific basis of the information provided is invaluable in planning research and in the interpretation of test results.
  • new material includes such topics as various cementitious materials, high performance concrete, recently introduced admixtures, concrete under cryogenic conditions, properties of the aggregate-matrix interface, and durability of concrete under extreme conditions.
  • incorporates a wealth of data from the latest relevant national and international standards and codes of practice
  • both Sl and Imperial units are used throughout
  • includes 1500 full references to the world’s literature on concrete
  • an extensive index containing over 6000 entries provides excellent ease-of-reference.
"With its many new additions, the book, at 844 pages is now an encyclopaedic tome, which is very reasonably priced. It remains the authoritative source of information on most aspects of the constituents, behaviour and properties of fresh and hardened concrete." Magazine of Concrete Research

A good handbook for a difficult subject 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is well organized and presented. It covers a lot, and is more comprehensive than other books of its type. It has very good material on concrete design/repair, and also covers wood structures, steel, and pre-engineered buildings quite well. The material on masonry is also good, but a discussion about rusted steel lintels embedded in masonry would have helpful, as this is a common source of problems in 20th century buildings. There are few handbooks that come as close as this one to a thorough treatment of the subject, and it is a useful book for architects and engineers who deal with renovation.

Editorial Review:

Make any renovation job go smoother. Building renovation, conservation and reuse represents more than half of all construction work - and is projected to increase to 80% by 2004. Structural Renovation of Buildings, by Alexander Newman, puts a single, convenient source of information about all aspects of structural renovation and strengthening of buildings at your fingertips. While its focus is largely on low and midrise buildings, you can apply the principles it clarifies to buildings of any size - steel-framed, masonry, or wood. Whether you're repairing deteriorated concrete...rehabilitating slabs on grade...strengthening lateral-load resisting systems...renovating a building facade...handling seismic upgrades or fire damage, you'll find this time-and-trouble-saving guide loaded with practical tips, methods, and design examples. It's also heavily illustrated with autoCAD generated details, supplier illustrations of materials, procedural techniques, and much, much more.

Superficial at Best 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Although this book covers a wide range of materials, the descriptions of the materials are superficial and elementary at best.

The tightly cropped photography obfuscates rather than illuminates, leaving you to decipher what exactly the material may look like.

There aren't any examples of potential applications which would be fine if the writing would create any room for the imagination.

This book is expensive and falls flat in promise considering its price. There are better resources out there to add to your library. It's too bad because I love FRAME magazine...

Editorial Review:

Following the overwhelming success of Material World, European material experts MatériO have compiled and described innovative materials for architecture and design in the sequel: Material World 2. Once again architects, interior architects and designers can look up the ideal manufacturer, and gain inspiration for their building exteriors, interiors, and innovative products.

Material World 2 is as comprehensive as the first volume: here architects and designers will find detailed product information, addresses, and contact details of manufacturers for every material featured. In addition, each material entry is accompanied by case studies, which show the material in specific applications.

Food for the minimalist architect 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

An ideal book that lent us all kinds of possibilities for the design of our new home. The full page photos and simple floor plan drawings made this book very valuable to our architect and interior designer. It was a terrific way of conveying what we liked and envisioned. Concrete, who would have ever thought of a resurgence? We're glad it's surfaced again

Editorial Review:

No longer the material of choice for just factories and industrial buildings, concrete is now fashionable and chic, adorning shops, restaurants, homes, and landscapes with its desirable, tactile surfaces. This reversal of fortune can be attributed to its use in luxurious homes and the discovery that concrete can provide stimulating or soothing environments for a range of leisure activities. Organized around the themes of Home, Work, Play, and Landscape, all the examples chosen celebrate the intrinsic qualities of concrete and how they work to make the places in which we live, work, and play and to shape the wider landscape that surrounds us. A range of projects from around the world includes a private house in Osaka by Tadao Ando, Canary Wharf Underground Station in London by Foster and Partners, the Museum of Asian Art in Paris by Henri and Bruno Gaudin, and recent work by Morphosis and Antoine Predock in the United States.

The "Bible" for structural engineers for decades past and present. Updated and a "must have" for the structural design engineer. The place to start when a new problem is encountered.

Editorial Review:

The only reference to all important structural engineering principles and design techniques, this best-selling, internationally renowned handbook is updated for current standard specifications and codes (including the 1994 AASHTO specifications) and the latest design developments. Contributions from structural engineers discuss a broad range of vital topics. Concise, practical and user-friendly, this one-of-a-kind resource gives you not only up-to-the-minute information on the planning, design, and construction of a variety of engineered structures, but also practical examples and detailed descriptions of design procedures.

A must for every Steel Detailer/Steel Design Engr. 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

The basic things, which generally neglected by the Detailer, are explained well.

The typical conn. details & the most useful details are presented with the sketches.

The dimensions, which we can't always keep in our brains, are tabulated very well.

Like this there are so many to describe....

Editorial Review:

This highly illustrated manual provides practical guidance on structural steelwork detailing. It:

* describes the common structural shapes in use and how they are joined to form members and complete structures

* explains detailing practice and conventions

* provides detailing data for standard sections, bolts and welds

* emphasises the importance of tolerances in order to achieve proper site fit-up

* discusses the important link between good detailing and construction costs

Examples of structures include single and multi-storey buildings, towers and bridges. The detailing shown will be suitable in principle for fabrication and erection in many countries, and the sizes shown will act as a guide to preliminary design.

The second edition has been updated to take account of changes to standards, including the revisions to BS5950 and includes a new chapter on computer aided detailing.
