Mushrooms Demystified 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent guide, however primarily for western states. Could easily be used as a college textbook, but easy enough for a novice to use.

good condition, good shipping time 5 out of 5 stars.

Everything went smoothly with this transaction. I bought it used; it seems brand new except for some rather deliberate-looking permanent marker dashes on the unbound sides of the book (on the page tips, whatever that's called). Shipping time was on the fast side of the range of days.

Editorial Review:

This is the be-all and end-all of mushroom books! Truly an encyclopedia of mushroom facts and lore, lavishly illustrated with full-color photographs, literally everything you need to know about mushrooms, edible or not. Arora has taught mycology for close to twenty years and has hunted and photographed mushrooms across the North American continent. Threaded through the book are his wry and humorous observations and comments, making what could have been a rather dull, "just-the-facts, ma'am" reference book into a really enjoyable read. The stunning photographs of the incredible variety of fungi are fascinating and eye-opening, and while the author gives clear and factual information, the mysterious allure of mushrooms in their countless shapes, sizes and colors is only increased by this huge and delightful book. --Mark Hetts

Why this book is vital to humanity as a whole 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

So many people are utterly consumed with their work life that they are avidly avoiding a spiritual experience, which is at the heart of what is ideal. This book may help serve as a gentlemenly guide to embarking on an organized hunt for fungi and an organized understanding of how to incorporate them into personal experience. Although some may argue with me, I would say this is actually high level reading.
The book provides the following:
The effects of psilocybin mushrooms
How to identify them while hunting outdoors
Tips on ingesting them and experiencing them
Pictures and diagrams to help identify them
Individual species descriptions
Poisonous look alikes
Includes a forward by renowned physician Dr. Andrew Weil

There is a wealth of info in this book and it is the best book on this subject.

Editorial Review:

The only identification guide exclusively devoted to psilocybin-containing mushrooms worldwide, with detailed descriptions and color photographs for over 100 species.

Still a standard field guide to fungi 5 out of 5 stars.
47 of 47 people found this review helpful.

This field guide is nearly twenty years old, but there are so few field guides to fungi that it still remains a standard reference. Like all Peterson field guides, it is handy and compact and can easily be taken into the field and pored over with the mushrooms in their wild habitat. The text is detailed and accurate and a "similar species" section is very useful. However, this guide uses painted plates whereas amateurs generally find it easier to identify fungi by photographs. I personally find photographs more accurate, but enjoy paintings in their own right. In this case the paintings are pleasing and quite faithful.

Although this guide should be on every mushroom enthusiast's shelves, a better beginners guide might be Roger Phillips' photographic book which has now appeared in a revised edition (on Amazon.com: ISBN 1554071151). Phillips provides 1000 photographs compared to this guide's 700 illustrations. However, Phillips is rather large to take into the field except in a backpack. Bear in mind that no fungus guide is comprehensive - each treats a selection of species - so it is wise to have a good selection in order to be in with a chance of correct identification.

So, until a compact photographic guide to fungi appears, this tried and tested Peterson guide will continue to fill a niche in the mushroom hunter's library.

Editorial Review:

More than 1,000 species of mushrooms described in detail. Over 700 paintings and drawings reveal subtle field marks that cannot be captured into photographs.

Very Well-Written Science for the Average Reader 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I read the original 2007 hardcover. It is a gripping account of the relationship between bacteria and humans, from parasitic disease makers to necessary commensals. You will find in very clear and plain English much you need to know about the right balance of cleanliness, allergies and other autoimmune diseases, antibiotic treatment of livestock, resistance swapping of bacteria from the most different species and even cancer cure potentials via bacteria. (I do hope though, that this will not end in a I Am Legend (Widescreen Single-Disc Edition) scenario...)

This book by a freelance science writer is well-structured, starting with a shock introduction, giving a capturing ride on medical bacteria history, presenting the gloomy presence, then the potential solution on the horizon with various future perspectives. As some issues are pending till 2010, be sure to get the latest potential revision of this book.

Just two notes: By reading this book, one may get the impression that syphilis had been brought back to Europe via the "1492 discovery" of the Americas. This disease has been known well before in Europe, including evidence found in Pompeii. Also, if you hear or read about Florence Nightingale, please look up the original, but neglected Mary Seacole...

If you are interested in similar books, with little overlap, Riddled with Life: Friendly Worms, Ladybug Sex, and the Parasites That Make Us Who We Are is the most close addition. If you are interested in our symbiotic body roomies (commensals), largely restricted to bacteria and in a systematic text book presentation, read the rather dry Microbial Inhabitants of Humans: Their Ecology and Role in Health and Disease. About former parasites, today our energy source and DNA family tree provider, mitochondria, read Power, Sex, Suicide: Mitochondria and the Meaning of Life. A more general biological approach of symbiosis is Liaisons of Life: From Hornworts to Hippos--How the Unassuming Microbe has Driven Evolution. A theoretic re-thinking, including reconstructing taxonomy and theories about gaia, read Symbiotic Planet: A New Look At Evolution. More, but not exclusively, on the yuk side is Parasite Rex : Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures with some disturbing pictures. An entire coffee-table book is Human Wildlife: The Life That Lives on Us, if you are not too squeamish...

Editorial Review:

Public sanitation and antibiotic drugs have brought about historic increases in the human life span; they have also unintentionally produced new health crises by disrupting the intimate, age-old balance between humans and the microorganisms that inhabit our bodies and our environment. As a result, antibiotic resistance now ranks among the gravest medical problems of modern times. Good Germs, Bad Germs tells the story of what went terribly wrong in our war on germs. It also offers a hopeful look into a future in which antibiotics will be designed and used more wisely, and beyond that to a day when we may replace antibacterial drugs and cleansers with bacterial ones.

Editorial Review:

The world's worst bioterrorist isn't the murderer who put anthrax spores into mail in the fall of 2001; it's Mother Nature, writes Madeline Drexler in this survey of infectious diseases. They're all here, described in detail from historical, scientific, and public-health perspectives: AIDS, influenza, the West Nile virus, and so on. Secret Agents is a good primer on each. The best chapter--and the scariest--may be the last one, which covers bioterrorism of the human variety (i.e., not Mother Nature). "If bioterrorists released smallpox virus, it would ... become a global calamity within six weeks," she writes. That's not even the scariest possibility: "Researchers estimate that as little as one gram of aerosolized botox could kill more than 1.5 million people." And there are no easy preventive measures. "Of the 50 top bioweapon pathogens, only 13 have vaccines or treatments." Because of this, Drexler calls for a massive increase in public-health funding. Without that, our doctors and hospitals will be unprepared for a disaster they may be able to anticipate right now. --John Miller

office resource 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this text to help review for the FNP examination. It is a quick-read resource, definately one to review with before jumping in to the medical books and journals. I would strongly recommend it for your medical library. It proves to be a good spring board for study.

good as a supplement to your textbook 4 out of 5 stars.

I was terrified of microbiology heading in, it seemed like it would be so difficult. After all, I had just finished the human anatomy & physiology series and those studies are so involved, I couldn't imagine how I was going to study the a&p of microscopic bacteria! I bought this book, and it did help. It's a much easier read than the course textbook, but I don't think I would have gotten an A in the class if I relied solely on it. Your textbook will cover things in much greater detail, and it's likely that the details will come up on exams. So, get this book and read it as a study guide and overview alongside your text. In some cases it can help make clear what the textbook is trying to say in very technical speak.

Editorial Review:

The high demand for nurses and other medical professionals has resulted in a dramatic enrollment increase in nursing schools and colleges who offer medical training. All these students are required to pass a course in microbiology, which tends to trip up many students. The proposed book will demystify the complex topic of microbiology in a way that students will gain the necessary skills required for several different branches of the medical profession.

Editorial Review:

Unusual shapes and colors make many mushrooms alluring to the eye, while the exotic flavors and textures of edible mushrooms are a gourmet delicacy for the palate. Yet many people never venture beyond the supermarket offerings, fearing that all other mushrooms are poisonous.

With amateur mushroom hunters especially in mind, David Fischer and Alan Bessette have prepared Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America. This field guide presents more than 100 species of the most delicious mushrooms, along with detailed information on how to find, gather, store, and prepare them for the table. More than 70 savory recipes, ranging from soups and salads to casseroles, canapes, quiches, and even a dessert, are included.

Throughout, the authors constantly emphasize the need for correct identification of species for safe eating. Each species is described in detailed, nontechnical language, accompanied by a list of key identifying characteristics that reliably rule out all but the target species. Superb color photographs also aid in identification. Poisonous "lookalikes" are described and illustrated, and the authors also assess the risks of allergic or idiosyncratic reactions to edible species and the possibilities of chemical or bacterial contamination.

A good reference for little organisms 4 out of 5 stars.
33 of 37 people found this review helpful.

The book is big and heavy and is filled with useful information for the world of microorganisms. All microbiology majors must have this book in their libraries. This book helps you identify, compare, and understand microorganisms better. Every organism is descibed in detail: gram-stain reactions, fermentation reaction, morphology, etc.

Editorial Review:

Based on the data contained in the four-volume Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology, BMDB-9 also includes new genera and species, new combinations, and new taxa published through the January 1992 issue of the IJSB. Users will find short general descriptions that encompass all organisms by Groups; shape and size, Gram reaction, other pertinent morphological features, motility and flagella, relations to oxygen, basic type of metabolism, carbon and energy sources, habitat and ecology. BMDB-9 also includes discussions of difficulties in identification, keys or tables to genera and species, genus descriptions, synonyms, other nomenclatural changes, and numerous illustrations.

Good review for microbiology 4 out of 5 stars.
15 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This book covers a lot of subject area for microbiology. This is a very good reference book. I used this book for my undergraduate microbiology class along with the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
ISBN: 0971999635
These 2 books helped me to get an "A" in my class. The second book which I also got on amazon.com is so specific to the type of questions I saw on my test. I was recommended the microbiology study guide by a friend in med school who used it for his USLME exam and found it quite helpful.

Editorial Review:

"Case Studies in Immunology, Fifth Edition", cites major topics of immunology as the background to a selection of real clinical cases that serve to reinforce and extend the basic science. This new edition vividly illustrates the importance of an understanding of immunology in diagnosis and therapy. As well as being a valuable review aid, "Case Studies in Immunology" introduces in a clinical setting the major common disorders of immunity, including hypersensitivity types I-IV and autoimmune disorders such as lupus and multiple sclerosis. It also describes and explains the consequences of some of the most important immune deficiencies. Each case history is preceded by basic scientific facts essential to understanding the immunology behind the disease or disorder. An end-of-case summary, questions, and discussion points finish each case. "Case Studies in Immunology" can be used as a stand-alone book, or as a clinical companion alongside "Immunobiology, Sixth Edition" and "The Immune System, Second Edition".
