Editorial Review:

Holidays on Ice is a collection of three previously published stories matched with three newer ones, all, of course, on a Christmas theme. David Sedaris's darkly playful humor is another common thread through the book, worming its way through "Seasons Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" a chipper suburban Christmas letter that spirals dizzily out of control, and "Front Row Center with Thaddeus Bristol," a vicious theatrical review of children's Christmas pageants. As always, Sedaris's best work is his sharply observed nonfiction, notably in "Dinah, the Christmas Whore," the tale of a memorable Christmas during which the young Sedaris learns to see his family in a new light. Worth the price of the book alone is the hilarious "SantaLand Diaries," Sedaris's chronicle of his time working as an elf at Macy's, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures ("You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf.") to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Along the way, he paints a funny and sad portrait of the way the countless parents who pass through SantaLand are too busy creating an Experience to really pay attention to their children. In a sly way, it carries a holiday message all its own. Read it aloud to the adults after the kids have gone to bed. --Ali Davis

The Mark Twain of our time 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Patrick McManus who writes regularly for Outdoor Life magazine brings 5 of his stories together. His humor is mostly about his own misfortunes. This audio cassette features the voice of George S. Irving. George pulls the audience in like a grandfather telling his grandchildren stories around a fire. His voice is very familiar, but I don't know where I heard it before. If you have a friend or relative that enjoys the outdoors this audio cassette is for them. The tape includes the following stories:

Nude with Other Wildlife; Summer Reading; Throwing Stuff; The Cabin at Spooky Lake; & Cry Wolf.

it is really cool 5 out of 5 stars.

Amusing tales of Alaska read by the Author 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Once more America's most distinctive humorist and storyteller invites us to spend a thoroughly entertaining visit with our friends at the End of the Road. The townspeople at the End of the Road survived the Alaska oil spill, but life has a few more upheavals in store. Old Angus Winslow's begun to worry about the memory lapses he's been having since he banged his head. But that hasn't stopped him from declaring his interest, after 25 years in Ruby McClay. Ed Flannigan has a fateful encounter with a pipe wrench, and a stuck dump truck that will put him in an Anchorage hospital, and change his life. And Emmitt Frank, who came to Alaska looking for nature and himself, gets booted out of his town apartment and lands in a backwoods cabin to find both - for better or for worse.

From babysitting disasters, to the strangest set of wedding bells Alaska has ever seen, life takes some strange turns, and then again goes on pretty much as usual.

2 cassettes. Approximate running time is 2 hours, 10 minutes.

If you like Tom Bodett's stories and voice, this is very enjoyable.

Editorial Review:

The author of The End of the Road and Small Comforts returns to his fictional Alaska town, The End of the Road, to present more unforgettable stories about its colorful inhabitants and their doings.

Dave Dave, he's the man, if he can't make you laugh, nobody can 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What I love about Dave is he's a regular guy....and yet, he's so darn funny! Here he is writing about what he knows best - guys. I laughed so hard that tears were rolling down my face........and I wasn't even past the introduction! Seriously though, this book should be required reading for any girl planning to get married or just moving in with a guy. It might save them some grief later on. Heck - it could even save a marriage or two or thirteen! Dave so hilariously shares with us all the mysteries of being a guy - from scratching (still chuckling about that chapter) to urinal etiquette, fear of committment to special medical conditions such as memory lapses. He truly says it like it is and oh, it's said so well. There's only one other humor writer who has made me laugh so hard I peed my pants (thanks a lot, Jarod Kintz) but Dave rates right up there for Guy Most Likely to Make you Pee.

Editorial Review:

This how-to about the male gender is radically different from the typical anti-men and pro-men material currently being published and peddled. 2 cassettes.

Editorial Review:

Star radio storyteller David Sedaris presents his collected works in one audio box set. The longest (at five hours) is his latest, Me Talk Pretty One Day, which contains two live performances from San Francisco. Welcome to a world where dogs outrank children, guitars have breasts, and Sedaris's fellow language-class students try to convey the concept of Easter to a Moroccan Muslim in their fledgling French (translated into English): "It is a party for the little boy of God," says one. "Then he be die one day on two ... morsels of ... lumber," says another. Sedaris is hilarious, and his Billie Holiday impression is amazing.

The three-hour, Christmas-themed Holidays on Ice is the gem of the collection. It has his greatest hit, "SantaLand Diaries," a chronicle of his stint as an elf at Macy's, covering everything from the preliminary group lectures ("You are not a dancer. If you were a real dancer you wouldn't be here. You're an elf and you're going to wear panties like an elf.") to the perils of inter-elf flirtation. Other hits feature the crazed newsletter "Season's Greetings to Our Friends and Family!!!" and the prostitute coworker his sister brought home one Yuletide, giving "the phrase 'ho, ho, ho' whole different meaning." Barrel Fever contains the fulminatingly funny "Glen's Homophobia Newsletter, Vol. 3, No. 2" and "Parade," discussing the narrator's perhaps not fully plausible gay relationships with Bruce Springsteen, Mike Tyson, and Peter Jennings. Naked describes his adventures in a nudist colony, but his family tales are, as ever, nonpareil.

Editorial Review:

Merrill Markoe, the creator of "Stupid Pet Tricks," won four Emmy awards for her work on the David Letterman show. In these sidesplitting essays--from "The Wacky World of Men" to "An Insider's Guide to the American Woman" to "Showering with Your Dog"--she reveals what she's learned about life from "dogs, celebrities, bachelors, and other beasts."

In Markoe's words, "I pick dogs that remind me of myself--scrappy, mutt-faced, with a hint of mange. People look for a reflection of their own personalities or the person they dream of being in the eyes of an animal companion. That is the reason I sometimes look into the face of my dog Stan and see wistful sadness and existential angst, when all he is actually doing is slowly scanning the ceiling for flies."

Following a collection of sparkling chapters on cultural phenomena--from the "Creeping Gabor Syndrome" (the terror of turning into Zsa Zsa Gabor) to what happens to you when you live alone (and the eight things you can do because there's no one there to stop you)--the last chapter outlines the many lessons Markoe has learned from her dogs: "If you see something you want, and all your other attempts at getting it have failed, it is only right to grovel shamelessly. As a second tactic, stare intently at the object of your desire, allowing long gelatinous drools to leak like icicles from your lips."

I am severely depressed because my tape of Scritch's Creek broke and the replacement is not available. My son and I listened to this tape at the start of every road trip and laughed ourselves silly every time (probably 100 x's at least!!). If you can get a copy, do it.

Editorial Review:

Hidden deep in a forest flows the perfect fish-filled creek--right next to the cabin of a massive mountain maniac. Laugh out loud at the accidental adventures of the young man who fishes the creek, fights Scritch's giant grandson, and gets caught with the horrifying Pearly, in "Scritch's Creek". Also includes "A Brief History of Boats and Marriage"", Boating Disorders", and "Out of Sync".

Lake Wobegon springs wonderfully 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Clarence Bunsen has bad (i.e. extremely funny) day, involving static, cramped hand and fear of death, ending with his leaping from a tree to frighten some children and restoring his equilibrium. Only GK could combine all those elements in one of the seasonal CDs from LW. "Me and Choir" is also excellent.

I heart Garrison Keillor 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The product was amazing, as always, with anything by Mr. Keillor. The stories brought me back to family vacations to the Northeast; sleepy-time ventures in the car while my parents drove... Garrison's voice is my favorite part about his stories. I also love that these are ONLY Lake Wobegone stories and have nothing to do with his whole radio show. (Lake Wobegone was always my favorite part anyway) :) Also, on a side not, the CD arrived on time and just as the seller said it would be. Two thumbs up. :)

Editorial Review:

Funny and touching, these monologues from original live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion focus on the spring season.

Includes: "Me and Choir," "A Day in the Life of Clarence Bunsen," and "Letter from Jim."

Garrison's Best-Ever recording! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I have virtually all of Keillor's Lake Woebegon works, and this is his finest! "On Meeting Donny Hart" is perhaps the finest tragi-comedy of them all! You'll bust a gut listening to Mazumbo, Gospel Birds, Pastor Ingquist's Trip to Orlando, Mammoth Concert, and Babe Ruth Visits Lake Woebegon-- the whole set is superb. I can't say enough good about this excellent product.

Editorial Review:

Gospel Birds is a collection of nine classic and very funny monologues from the early years of A Prairie Home Companion. In addition to the title story (about Irma and Ernie Lundeen's traveling flock of acrobatic, bible-reciting birds), contents include:

  • Pastor Ingquist's Trip to Orlando
  • Mammoth Concert Tickets
  • Bruno, the Fishing Dog
  • Gospel Birds
  • Meeting Donny Hart at the Bus Stop
  • A Day at the Circus with Mazumbo
  • The Tollerud's Korean Baby
  • Sylvester Krueger's Desk
  • Babe Ruth visits Lake Wobegon

Gospel Birds is Garrison Keillor at his very best—endearing insights, gentle humor and warm affection for the human foibles we all share.
