Editorial Review:

When does 1 + 1 = 3 (or more)? When you’ve got a baby on the way.

Part of that new math, says #1 New York Times bestselling author Jill Conner Browne - whom USA Today calls “just plain funny” - includes the addition of an outsize sense of humor to balance the equation of your growing family.

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit is a hilarious (though not scientifically tested) wink at the time-honored mysteries of parenting, for anybody who has ever had a kid or has ever known one, knows that the experience is neither fun nor profitable - so, you might as well laugh!

As each generation begins its hopeful, happy, and, yes, sometimes harrowing journey together as Parent and Child, together they spawn a new body of “knowledge,” the nuances of which will elude the Experts every time. Here are stories of the things we do for Mother Love - or, the most incredibly full-time volunteer job ever - and tips guaranteed not to be found in any other parenting guide.

- How to Talk to a Pregnant Woman
- How the Diamonds on Delivery Policy Can Speed Up the Labor Nature Intended
- Why a Good Mother Is Always Adept at Subterfuge
- The List of Things You Wouldn’t Think You Would Have to Tell Kids Not to Do
- Why Mothers of Sons Can Never Retire
and
- Why, for Parents, It’s Just a Short Drive to the Poorhouse

The Sweet Potato Queens’ Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit will have everyone who’s ever been a parent - or ever thought of becoming one - or been a child - or is still one - giggling and grinning (no small feat) through those child-bearing years…and beyond.

Dive Right In (but watch out for sharks!) 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm not sure what the commotion is, but these short poems are the perfect length for preschoolers who love word play, are expanding their vocabulary, are fascinated with various animals, but lack the attention span for "more sophisticated" poetry. The poems feature different meters so it does mix things up a bit more than, say, "Green Eggs and Ham", and the illustrations are colorful and fun and only add to the enjoyment.

This is a fun, fun book. As a twist, the first time you read it, read the poem and have your child guess the animal (you'll have to replace the name of the animal in some of the poems with "I" or "we" to do this.)

Editorial Review:

"There's a curious commotion, at the bottom of the ocean; I think we ought to go and take a look. You'll find every sort of creature, that lives beneath the sea; swimming through the pages of this book." The sequel to the best-selling "Rumble in the Jungle", this delightful new collection of poems includes fun rhymes about the creatures who live in and around the ocean. Children will delight in the snappy poems and colorful illustrations about whales, walruses, penguins, polar bears, stingrays and sharks.

Editorial Review:

He's the inventor of Past-Tense TV (featuring "Got Smart," "Father Knew Best," and "It Was Left to Beaver"); the tireless crusader for such charities as the Center for Research into the Heebie Jeebies, Children of Parents with Bad Teeth, and the State Hospital for Those Who Felt All Right About a Year Ago; founder of the George Carlin Book Club (top titles: "How to Act Laid-Back During a Grease Fire," "Fill Your Life with Croutons," and "The Meaning of Corn"); and the only social commentator with the guts to point out that "the day after tomorrow is the third day of the rest of your life."

Yes, George Carlin is back with more of what he does better than any other comic today: uproarious observations, laser-targeted crankiness, linguistic legerdemain, and inspired weirdness. ("If the shoe fits, get another just like it." "When you sneeze, all the numbers in your head go up by one.") Napalm & Silly Putty is just what his fans have been waiting for—another generous helping of notions, nonsense, assertions, assumptions, mockery, merriment, silliness, sarcasm, and, to be sure, plenty of disturbing references and toxic alienation. George wouldn't have it any other way.

Belongs in Everyone's Bathroom!! 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

One of my best friends has assembled a rather amazing library of some 200 books: quote books, trivia books, fact books, you name it. The most interesting facet of his collection is the place where it resides--in his bathroom!!! Furthermore, David Feldman's wonderful series of Imponderables books has a place of honor in his library--right next to the toilet paper! (Needless to say, he is a bachelor as of this writing!) When Do Fish Sleep? is Feldman's third book in the series, and one of the best, in that more time is spent pondering questions that people really do care about, such as: "Why do gas gauges take an eternity to go from registering full to half full, and then drop to empty in the speed of light?" (I think we've all been there!) Feldman receives most of his imponderables from readers of the previous volumes, seeks out experts in the relevent fields to answer them (In the above example, that person is Anthony H Siegel of Ametek's US Gauge Division), and prints their response. If no one expert knows the definitive answer, Feldman will print the most prevalent theories instead. There are also many charming and funny illustrations to keep the material from getting too dry. There is also a section in the back called Frustables, which deals with Imponderables that are not easily solved, and their corresponding theories. Finally, the most important feature of this and any other Imponderables book: The articles are just the right length to read when seated "upon the throne." (Well, most of them are, anyway!) So, get When Do Fish Sleep and other Imponderables books right away. Feldman's ready wit will keep you entertained and keep you from having to make that sometimes painful search for reading matter the next time nature calls!

Editorial Review:

Ponder, if you will ...
Why are tennis balls fuzzy?
How come birds don't tip over when they sleep on telephone wires?
What makes yawning contagious?
Why, oh why, do roosters have to crow so early in the morning?

Pop-culture guru David Feldman demystifies these topics and so much more in When Do Fish Sleep? -- the unchallenged source of answers to civilization's most baffling questions. Part of the Imponderables® series and charmingly illustrated by Kassie Schwan, When Do Fish Sleep? arms readers with the knowledge about everyday life that encyclopedias, dictionaries, and almanacs just don't have. And think about it, where else are you going to get to the bottom of why Mickey Mouse has only four fingers?

They Shoot Canoes... 4 out of 5 stars.

Another very enjoyable McManus collection. I first started reading his material in the 80's. Now my kids enjoy his humor with me. Great for anyone who has a love for the outdoors and all the misadventures they have experienced.

They Shoot Canoes Don't They? 4 out of 5 stars.

This collection of short stories is one of the funniest I have ever read. To fully understand the humor in these stories, you must enjoy outdoor activites and appreciate first-class sarcasm. Included in this book are about twenty-five chorts, all exploding with laughter at every turn of page.
These stories are about the personal experiences of the author, and the people that he is close to. He writes about hunting, fishing, camping, and other outdoor activites. His stories are so personal because he is writing about his past; as he was growing up, and his present. In addition to laughing at him, the reader also laughs at himself, because as you have said, thought, or done the very same thigns that he is writing about. One story in paticular describes his thoughts and fellings about getting glasses. At first McManus attributes the change in the world's clarity to communists, subsequently he is diagnosed with an astgmatism. He does not think that a big game guide should wear glasses, so he does not confide his new spectacles to his friends, until he realizes that an adult mentor of his also has glasses. Normally a person getting glasses would not be considered humor, but when written by this autor almost anything becomes funny.
In addition to entertaining, these stories also teach the reader. A few lessons that can be learned are: take time to enjoy the simple things in life, laugh at yourself, and take time out of your normal schedule to go outdoors and spend time with family and freinds. If you enjoy a good laugh pick up "They Shoot Canoes Don't They," or one of his many other novels.

Editorial Review:

McManus, who makes us laugh at our weaknesses, can take an innocent object such as a decrepit old canoe and show us an entirely new and funny way of looking at such things. 2 cassettes.

The Night The Bear Ate Goombaw 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is hilarious. We like to read it to the middle and high school kids. You can hear them laughing about the fur coat, etc. outside the building. It has sparked many a boy into getting Partick's other books and reading for themselves. As a library director I know how hard it is to get middle and high school kids to read for pleasure. Patrick McManus is sure a pleasure. When I read the Goombaw story, and I have numerous times I still can not get through it without tears running down my face.

Here you go Mrs. Galloway!!!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Now, I'm actually from Idaho where this book is actually based off of. Despite all of the Sarcasm, you got Idaho. HAHA LOL. I know this is bad but I hate to read. I had to read this book for an english assignment. But I really like this book. It is non-stop laughter. I think I am going to read all of his books now. I hope that is enough for you to be convinced that this book really is good and should be read by anyone who loves humorous books. HAPPY READING! :)

Editorial Review:

One side-splitting story of outdoor adventure follows another in a collection of seven hilarious McManus stories. 2 cassettes.

This book contains headlines, malapropisms, school essays, parental notes to teachers, lawyer-witness dialogues, signs and other assaults on the English language that provide hours of chuckles and retelling to those who have not read it.

When you read a want ad that says: "Mixing bowl set designed to please a cook with round bottom for efficient beating," or the headline "Stiff Opposition Expected to Casketless Funeral Plan," you have to laugh.

It also reminds me of what a boss once told me: You can always deny what you said; you can never deny what you wrote.

This book is "overpriced, and worth every penny of it."

You can buy this at Amazon which is on sale for $7.95.

Editorial Review:

Anguished English is the impossibly funny anthology of accidental assaults upon our language. From bloopers and blunders to Signs of the Times to Mixed Up Metaphors...from Two-Headed Headlines to Mangling Modifiers, here is an outrageous treasury of assaults upon our common language that will leave you roaring with delight and laughter.

Dr. Weekes 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Weekes seemed to know that her job was not to motivate or inspire people, but instead, to help those who were suffering get well. In her books and tapes, she offers real hope to people, many of whom (as she acknowledges) might not have the energy to hope - yet. In these days of pop psychology

and trendy motivational products, Dr. Weekes goes right to the heart of the matter: that people suffering from panic attacks don't do so because of defects in their personalities, but because they've been sensitized to certain situations. Dr. Weekes helps us learn techniques to get past that sensitivity.

Her genius was in understanding exactly what her audience was going through emotionally. I've never heard any other doctor speak with such empathy. And by her example, she teaches us to be patient with ourselves while we're getting better.

I usually HATE self-help materials, but I love Dr. Weekes' work. She's one of my heroines.

Editorial Review:

In this eight-part radio series, Dr. Claire Weekes, bestselling author of Hope and Help for Your Nerves speaks to the listener intimately and compassionately about how to overcome anxiety, frustration, phobias, and depression. She coaches the listener on how to pass through panic and reach a place of strength and optimism. One of the first people to study and write about anxiety and panic disorders, Dr. Weekes was recognized by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to medicine. Her revolutionary approach is remarkably simple and effective and continues to be recommended by medical and psychological communities throughout the world.
