6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Hey this skinny melinky kid from the Bronx (me) laughed myself silly through 3 or 4 commutes to and from work-- loving this book!

You can BET I'm gonna make (and eat and G-d help whoever tries to take a portion of it from me!) all of those recipes -- especially that Hostess Twinky Pie!

A great book with irreverent wit, humor, great cuss words, sensitivity in the right places and a Boe-Day-Shuss (hey I'm from the Bronx -- we can't spell Southern words) outlook on life and..... foodies!!

Editorial Review:

The creator of Dilbert, the fastest-growing comic strip in the nation, takes a look at corporate America in all its glorious lunacy. These hilarious essays on incompetent bosses, rampant management fads, bewildering technological changes, and so much more, will make anyone who has ever worked in an office laugh out loud in recognition.

The Dilbert Principle: The most ineffective workers will be systematically moved to the place where they can do the least damage -- management.

Since 1989, Scott Adams has been illustrating this principle each day, lampooning the corporate world through Dilbert, his enormously popular comic strip. In Dilbert, the potato-shaped, abuse-absorbing hero of the strip, Adams has given voice to the millions of Americans buffeted by the many adversities of the work place.

Now he takes the next step, attacking corporate culture head-on in this light-hearted series of essays. Adams explores the zeitgeist of ever-changing management trends, overbearing egos, management incompetence, bottomless bureaucracies, petrifying performance reviews, three-hour meetings, the confusion of the information super highway, and more.

With sharp eyes, and an even sharper wit, Adams exposes, and skewers, the bizarre absurdities of everyday corporate life. The Dilbert Principle rings so true! Listeners will be convinced that he has been spying on their bosses.

What a comic writer 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Many in America are familiar with Dave Barry. I don't know anyone in Ireland or the UK who's ever heard of him. i have introduced my mother to him. She is a writer and appreciates good humour. I think she wasn't expecting him to be quite so funny though. When I said he is hillarious, I was not over reacting. I was pleasantly surprised to see her nearly fall over in histerics. Humour is good for the soul. Dave Barry is good for the soul. This book covers travel across all of the states, many European countries, Scandanavia, some parts of Asia. For his own reasons, Dave has catalogued some countries together... either his summary of one was so similar to many others, or he was so unimpressed he was lost for words! Either way, you'll enjoy this. How could you not?!

Editorial Review:

Bestselling laugh-master Dave Barry is back with an all-new, all-hilarious look at the lighter side of travel.

Going out of town for business or pleasure? Now, in this tongue-in-cheek guide to globe-trotting, Dave Barry provides the information you need to take your trip with "a minimum of unpleasantness and death." Staying in the good 'ole U.S. of A.? Barry irreverently highlights such national stops as "The Walt Disney 'You Will Have Fun' Disney World Theme Shopping Complex and Resort Compound." Venturing abroad? Barry promises honesty: "If I think a country is awful, I'm going to say so, even if I've never been to this country and know virtually nothing about it"!

For the first, last -- and funniest -- word on travel today, this is must listening -- even if you're only taking a trip around the block!

Editorial Review:

The Atlanta Journal Constitution says it all: "Describing Patrick McManus as an outdoor humorist is like saying Mark Twain wrote books about small boys." And if you don't believe them, McManus' millions of fans certainly can't be wrong.

Like Twain -- or more contemporary humorists Dave Barry or Garrison Keillor -- McManus shares the belief that life's eternal verities exist primarily to be overturned. In McManus' world, all steaks should be chicken-fried, strong coffee should be drunk by the light of a campfire, and fishing trips should consist of men acting like boys and boys behaving like the small animals we've always assumed they were.

Into The Twilight, Endlessly Grousing is McManus' 10th collection of hilarious adventures, wry observations, and curmudgeonly calls for bigger and bigger fish stories (don't even think about calling them lies). This time around, the renowned columnist takes on everything from cereal crimes, Idaho style, to a man's undying love for a good fly rod.

As always, McManus offers his own brand of philosophical insight along the way. A prime example -- his belief that ignorance is the bond that hold friendships together. And he gives us the examples to prove it. So no matter what you're after, it's all here in McManus' funniest and most far-reaching story collection yet.

They are also about joy, grief, dreams, luck, and mysteries—about the extraordinary moments of wonder that illuminate our ordinary lives.

Makes Great Toilet Paper! 1 out of 5 stars.
34 of 60 people found this review helpful.

I got this book on clearance for $2.15 and what an investment it was! Just set this thing right next to the toilet and you'll have toilet paper for at least 2-3 weeks!

As if Stuart Smalley wasn't enough we get more brainless garbage from Al Franken... Air America is and always will be an embarrassing failure and so will Al Franken. But thanks anyway Al, I'm sure Rush appreciates all the publicity. He'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

Stick to SNL and leave the childish insults to the 5th graders at recess.

Hate 1 out of 5 stars.

Received it as a gift and gave it back.

not 100% funny but he doesn't need to be 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A typical Barry column in this collection is like some Mel Brooks movies I've seen- he throws so much humor (or at least intended humor) at you that even if only 10% of it is funny, you are still laughing at least once or twice per essay. The ideal way to spend time when you are trapped at, say, a haircut appointment or a Greyhound bus (which is where I was when I read this fun little book!)

Fun to read a bit at a time 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I enjoyed this book partly because it is about 80 separate columns in one book. It's easy to skim the titles and choose one that sounds right for your mood. I read it before going to sleep over the course of a couple of months, one or two chapters most evenings. I didn't really read them in any set order and occasionally had to guess if I'd already read the chapter before looking at the first paragraph or two. Some of the stories are "laugh out loud" funny while others are just okay.

It's certainly reasonably priced even if some of the material is a bit dated.

I would recommend this book to any Dave Barry fan.

Garrison's Best-Ever recording! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I have virtually all of Keillor's Lake Woebegon works, and this is his finest! "On Meeting Donny Hart" is perhaps the finest tragi-comedy of them all! You'll bust a gut listening to Mazumbo, Gospel Birds, Pastor Ingquist's Trip to Orlando, Mammoth Concert, and Babe Ruth Visits Lake Woebegon-- the whole set is superb. I can't say enough good about this excellent product.

Editorial Review:

Gospel Birds is a collection of nine classic and very funny monologues from the early years of A Prairie Home Companion. In addition to the title story (about Irma and Ernie Lundeen's traveling flock of acrobatic, bible-reciting birds), contents include:

  • Pastor Ingquist's Trip to Orlando
  • Mammoth Concert Tickets
  •  Bruno, the Fishing Dog
  • Gospel Birds
  • Meeting Donny Hart at the Bus Stop
  • A Day at the Circus with Mazumbo
  • The Tollerud's Korean Baby
  • Sylvester Krueger's Desk
  • Babe Ruth visits Lake Wobegon

Gospel Birds is Garrison Keillor at his very best—endearing insights, gentle humor and warm affection for the human foibles we all share.

    A Delight! 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

A book filled with humorous stories, this compilation of experiences was a treat to read! The Grasshopper Trap is only the second book I've read by Patrick McManus but now I want to track down all of his stories. McManus writes humor without the obscene, offensive language that seems so common everywhere these days. It's a refreshing, fun read with stories that entertain as well as remind us of a simpler, less frantic way of life.

If you don't like laughing, DON'T READ THIS BOOK! 5 out of 5 stars.

Strange Encounters of the Bird Kind 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The title of these comments is from one of the tales in this third collection of short stories I have read by Mr. Patrick F. McManus. The author has been writing the yarns and his versions of his childhood "true" stories for decades, and has now produced 12 collections of these essays in book form. Many of the stories are about being outdoors and failing miserably as a hunter and fisherman, but one gets the impression that to the extent he fails, he does with seeming intent. It's the outdoors he loves, not harming it or its inhabitants. When he does speak of a successful outing with his friends he complains so much about the "success" that again you can tell coming home empty handed is his real goal. A collection of stories is what he is after.

The best stories here range from his childhood when speaking of why an 8 year old is perfectly competent to own his first knife, while even one day short of the 8th anniversary would be nothing less than a felony were a knife to be given to such an infant. He goes on at length as to how men delude themselves in to their thinking they have convinced their wives how their gun collections multiply without a single purchase. And in a story entitled, "A Hunker Is Not A Squat", he explains how with the correct posture, a stick and a dirt floor, The United Nations would be unnecessary, and world conflicts would end.

Mr. McManus writes for everyone who enjoys a good laugh, uncontrived humor, and just simple observations about human nature. He does not preach about the solutions to world problems, claim a cure for the common cold, or how to get rich. He just gives the reader the gift of laughter, an invaluable gift.

    Editorial Review:

A collection of spoofs on outdoor life explains how to construct a grasshopper trap, the many uses of a skunk ladder, and how to become a human fuel pump. Read by George S. Irving. Book available.

Hallelujah! The Sweet Potato Queens are back!

In 1999, Jill Conner Browne, royal boss of Jackson, Mississippi's own glorious Sweet Potato Queens, introduced them to the world in the hilarious bestseller The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love (which contained everything you ever need to know about Love, Life, Men, Marriage, and the importance of Being Prepared). But, fortunately for us, that was not the final chapter in the Queens' splendid saga. The Sweet Potato Queens still have plenty of stuff to say and valuable wisdom to impart about how they went from being Cute Girls to Fabulous Women, including:

Dating for the Advanced, or Advancing
The Joys of Marriage -- if you must
    More Delicious, Death-Defying Recipes
The Promise for Men -- six little words that will make any woman Lolling About -- the official activity of the Sweet Potato Queens

    And, of course,
The All-True Story of the Two Most Wonderful Men in the World

    Not to mention:
Reader Mail -- honoring the adventures of brand-new Wannabes and Honorary Queens from around the world

If you haven't met the Sweet Potato Queens yet, this is the introduction you've been waiting for. If you already know the joys of Queendom, this is your official welcome-back party.
