This book is now worthless. ACLS guidelines were updated in Spring 2006. Make sure that any study materials you buy were printed after then.

EXCELLENT INFO ON SUPPLEMENTS TARGETTING TUMOR SUPRESSION 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

My 43 year old husband was recently diagnosed with terminal lung cancer as a result of his radiation treatment 10 years ago for his Hogkins lymphoma. He underwent 4 months of chemo and also was fortunate to consult with a oncology nutritionist who recommended various supplements, some used in Europe for cancer therapy and not classified there as "supplements". My husband has the rarest type of lung cancer and it is typically described as the least responsive to chemo. The supplements recommended by the nutritionist target tumor supression, and angiogenesis (the ability of a tumor to create it's own blood vessels and spread). I bought this book because I was wowed and awed by another book of his, "Nutrional secrets that will save your life", or something like that. That the author is a neurosurgeon got my attention as someone I could likely trust to adequately research what supplements are effective for cancer. The book is easy to read and explains the action of the cancer fighting supplements, and is appropriate for readers without a medical background. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning how to not only safely fight cancer (and without all the side effects of Western medicine) but also how to prevent cancer and increase their overall immune system.

Editorial Review:

(Twin Streams) Consumer text discusses the power of good nutrition to those fighting cancer. Identifies everyday foods with cancer-fighting properties and how best to prepare them, which nutritional supplements can help, how certain fats and oils enhance the body's natural defenses, and how flavonoids can help the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Editorial Review:

If you're a parent of one of the more than one million children in this country with obsessive-compulsive disorder, you know how confusing, even frightening, the symptoms of OCD can be. You're terrified of losing your child and angry about the havoc this disorder has wreaked in your family. More than anything, you want to be able to unlock the secrets of OCD, understand the cause of your child's bizarre symptoms, and help your child break free of these disruptive, relentless thoughts and actions.

In her landmark book, Freeing Your Child from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Dr. Tamar E. Chansky creates a clear road map to understanding and overcoming OCD based on her successful practice treating hundreds of children and teenagers with this disorder. In Part I, Dr. Chansky "cracks the code" of the peculiar rules and customs of OCD -- the handwashing, tapping, counting, and so forth. She explains how OCD is diagnosed, how to find the right therapist partner, and how to tailor treatment options to your child's needs. You'll learn how powerful behavioral modification can be and when medication can help. In Part II, you'll learn how not to be pulled in by your child's debilitating rituals at home or at school, how to talk to your child about the "brain tricks" OCD causes, and how to create an effective OCD battle plan that will empower your child to "boss back" the OCD monster. You'll also learn how to cope in moments of crisis.

Part III offers specific advice for how to help your child handle the most common manifestations of OCD such as fears of contamination, checking, getting things "just right," intrusive thoughts, and more. Part IV is an indispensable guide to additional resources, including books, videos, organizations, and websites.

Filled with Dr. Chansky's compassionate advice and inspiring words from the many children with OCD whom she has helped, this book will be your lifeline. Battling back from OCD is hard work, but with the comprehensive, proven guidance in this book, you can help your child reclaim a life free from its grip.

gives a detail summary of the book... a must have for all pharmacy students.

book is actually really helpful 4 out of 5 stars.

much more concise than Depiro; it's like ESPN for therapeutics, all the best highlights... but if you have a very picky professor they might bring up something specific enough that it isn't included in this book.

nice book 4 out of 5 stars.

Great therapy book to have in your pocket, but doesn't discuss much on etiology of diseases. Basically it's good as a review, but it's not helpful if you are trying to learn the disease for the first time.

great book for any medical/pharmacy student 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book hoping that it would serve as a shorter version of the larger and more detailed textbook. It turned out to do just that. I have used this book on many occasions to review the key things about certain conditions without having to read the lengthy chapters of the textbook.....this is a must have for anyone in the medical field....it provides a concise summary and key points from the bigger version.

Editorial Review:

This convenient drug therapeutic handbook--a companion to the new "Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach, 6th Ed."--is organized by organ system and disease state, and condensed for easy information retrieval. It provides a bulleted format with tables, charts, and algorithms to help the user find the information they need quickly.

American Revolution - an overview both economic and military 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have read a few books on the American Revolution, but they always leave me somewhat underwhelmed. This book, despite having good reviews (generally) is no exception. To be sure, there are many very good points to the book - it's extremely readable, covers both economic and military issues, gives good background, includes adequate maps, etc. However, it also contains the same problems that other Revolution books have.

I think these problems stem from a root cause, and that is that they are written by Americans. There is some weird blind spot that Americans have when writing about their own early history, that they seem don't have when writing about WWII, the Civil War, etc. I believe it stems from the same three underlying assumptions that permeate Revolution-era books:

1. Armed rebellion was inevitable.

2. Colonial victory and Independence was inevitable

3. The Colonies were Right and the British were Wrong.

The first two assumptions are especially annoying to those of us in other former colonial countries that did not achieve independence through military action. Of just the former British colonies, a small sampling of non-revolutionary countries includes Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc. Middlekauff falls squarely into this trap. If North American revolution was so inevitable, why didn't Nova Scotia join the rebellion? Why not Canada (modern Quebec and Ontario) - especially since the French Quebecoise had long enjoyed virtual independence from France and were not reconciled to more regulatory British rule. What about Florida, newly captured from Spain? What about the British Caribbean possesions, sugarcane growers having the same trade issues as tobacco growers? No, Middlekauff allows the 13 colonies to float virtually alone (to be sure, Benedict Arnold's invasion of Canada is reported, as is the British counter-invasion from Canada, but no discussion is made of why the French Quebecoise didn't aid the Americans).

The third assumption is similarly hard for modern-day descendants of American slaves to accept. As an institution, slavery survived in the United States long after it had disappeared from the British Empire (although African colonies suffered various versions of Apartheid). The revolution was fought for the benefit of wealthy merchants and landowners. I doubt that the average tenant or laborer saw any real economic or political benefit to independence in their lifetimes.

To be fair to Middlekauff, he does not make the second assumption. Much time and effort (I would argue a little too much!) in spent discussing deliberations in the British Parliament and to the responses of the States and of Congress. This part of the story is necessarily dry, but at least it explains legitimate grievances and how the resentment in the Colonies was allowed to build (but, as I mentioned, does not explain why such a resentment did not build up in Canada, Nova Scotia, the Caribbean colonies, etc.). But Middlekauff is at his best when describing the military activities that led to American victory. Not just the battles, but the manoeuvers, supply problems, the nature of armies in the late 18th century, etc. When described in such accurate and vivid detail, it's hard not to conclude that British military power was predestined to fail in the absence of real (British) political will to make significant concessions to the Colonies.

Or, maybe this book was unsatisfactory because the American Revolution is just not as inherently interesting as the Civil War or WWII. Whatever the case, this book is readable, certainly, but I didn't enjoy it a lot, especially when compared to McPherson's entry in this History of the United States series (Battle Cry of Freedom).

Editorial Review:

This outstanding narrative history, the first volume to appear in the Oxford History of the United States, offers an intimate view of the development of the Revolutionary War, the battle between the colonies and the motherland, and the establishment of the American republic. Beginning with the Treaty of Paris in 1763 and continuing to the election of George Washington as the first president, Robert Middlekauff charts the growing conflict between England and America and portrays the drama and anguish of the colonies' struggle for independence.

Editorial Review:

Joanne Koenig Coste, now a renowned pioneer in implementing positive methods of caring for Alzheimer's patients, began to develop her groundbreaking approach when her middle-aged husband was diagnosed with progressive dementia shortly after the birth of her fourth child. As she struggled to care for him and their family, she recognized that it was possible to avoid some of the tremendous emotional burdens Alzheimer's patients and their care providers endure during the course of the disease. In this book Koenig Coste explains the five tenets of her "habilitation" approach, an accessible and comprehensive plan proven to have worked with thousands of patients and care providers.
Refuting long-accepted ideas, she calls for care "partners" to join patients in their current sense of place or time; to encourage patients to use their remaining skills to support their sense of independence and dignity; and, most of all, to continue communicating with patients by focusing on their emotional "language."
Learning to Speak Alzheimer's also offers hundreds of practical tips to ease life for everyone involved with Alzheimer's, including how to

- cope with the diagnosis and figure out if the patient wants to discuss it
- respectfully stop the person from driving
- make meal and bath times as pleasant as possible
- adjust room design and lighting for the patient's comfort
- deal with wandering, paranoia, and aggression
- establish a plan of care

Learning to Speak Alzheimer's revolutionizes the way we perceive and deal with Alzheimer's disease.

The War on Cancer is a Big Lie! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I thought this was generally a good book because it draws more attention to the fact the organized medicine is entirely different than it appears to be. Cancer cures are not what they are searching for, they are searching for new ways to make even greater fortunes on cancer treatments. Do a google search on the use of proton therapy for cancer and you'll see what I mean. It's very expensive and it hasn't proven to be any better than chemo or radiation (both of which take a horrible toll on the patient's immune system), yet these devices are being built around the country right now.

Our environment is being heavily polluted by a smorgasbord of toxic chemicals not only in the air and water, but in our food. If you don't think that can have a severe effect on your health, think again.

Numerous cures for cancer have already been discovered and effectively suppressed. Take the discoveries of Davis and Rawls, for example. Albert Roy Davis and Walter Rawls found through many years of research that North pole magnetic fields were extremely effective in halting the growth of cancer while strengthening the tissue surrounding the cancer, minimizing the chances of the cancer spreading. South pole magnetic fields had the opposite effect. They increased the growth of cancer in the body. There's your scientific evidence for whether or not power lines can affect the growth of cancer. South pole magnetic fields do increase the growth of cancer, and power lines are one of many sources of South pole magnetic exposure in our environment. Your telephone is another. Davis and Rawls wrote some great books that I highly recommend reading.

My best advice to anyone with cancer would be to do lots and lots of research on alternatives to conventional medicine, and use a combination of them. Aloe Vera is another one to look into. What it can do for the body is truly amazing. Yep, it's superb for much more than just sunburn. Plus, it can be grown almost anywhere on earth, indoors or outdoors.

When we hear the word brainwash we think of cults, not colleges. However, that is exactly what is happening in our education system. Students are being brainwashed to believe certain things and to disbelieve other things, namely anything that isn't taught in college. Well guess who took over the colleges many years ago - among others, the Rockefellers. Read the book, "Dumbing Us Down", written by a winner of the New York State "Teacher of the Year" award, John Gatto.

Great for College Students 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is great if you are a pre-professional health science major and need to learn the inner workings of Organic Chemistry. It gives you some insight before you take the class on how to succeed in studying in it, so you can make that "A" that your admissions board will be proud to see on your transcript. I highly recommend it.

Not a help 2 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book thinking it might be helpful over the course of my Orgo I class, however, this book turned out to be way tooooo Basic to be of any help at all. I also thought that the order and ways which the reactions and concepts were not done well at all. Poor coverage of electrophilic addition.

Editorial Review:

A plain-English guide to one of the toughest science courses around
Organic chemistry is rated among the most difficult courses that students take and is frequently the cause of washout among pre-med, medical, and nursing students. This book is an easy-to-understand and fun reference to this challenging subject. It explains the principles of organic chemistry in simple terms and includes worked-out problems to help readers get up to speed on the basics.

New age pseudoscientific nonsense... 1 out of 5 stars.

...the "thinking cap" exercise is my favorite -- there's a photo showing some young girl pulling her ear lobes down almost to her collar bone!...the accompanying text claims that such yanking on the ear lobes stimulates "energy sites" in a manner analogous to acupuncture and facilitates thinking...ouch!...I think I'll pass on that one!...and the "energy yawn"??...or the "calf pump"??...no doubt there are reams of scientific research supporting such "techniques" for stimulating thought -- they're just not on this planet...personally, I think you should save your money and attend some of Ms. Hannaford's presentations at the "New Thought Center of Hawaii" where, over the years, she has presented such enlightening seminars as "The Cosmic Order of Sound" and "The Heartful Experience Sufi Dancing at night"...or maybe go out and buy some nice crystals and incense...but whatever you chose, don't waste money on this book.
