Great, but type is microscopic! 4 out of 5 stars.

This is an invaluable resource in terms of content. It is the pocket size, which is convenient. Understand that the small size means that the type is incredibly small. You might need a microscope to read this!

Great Clinical Reference! 5 out of 5 stars.

For all medical practitioners this Sanford Guide is the definitive pocket guide for infectious disease treatment. Updated annually with the latest treatment recommendations from professional groups. I use it nearly daily when considering antibiotic selection and disease treatment.

Not convenient to use 2 out of 5 stars.

The book had all the information I wanted but the print was totally unreadable due to size...I opted for the more expensive spiral bound version.

best pocketbook for clinicians 5 out of 5 stars.

for medical doctors who work in a busy health unit and need at any time a handy book to review antibiotics, bugs and side effects.
very-very helpfull for clinicians with a subspesialty (rheumatology, nephrology, hematology etc) who need fast to have access on information such as the appropriate antibiotic and the first in line medication.

must be in your pocket for inpatient/outpatient care! 4 out of 5 stars.

We all need this pocket book to stay current on Abx. Rx and Tx.--period. Dosing, too, and specific infective regimens are also noted. My only complaint is that sometimes it is confusing and tedious to FIND what you need. An updated charting system, and easier to find categories would be nice in the next edition.

Where were the editors? 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I just finished Steven Johnson's "Ghost Map". Not to be rude, but how does this stuff get published? For Pete's sake, the name of the book is ghost map, and there is not even a copy of the ghost map in the book.

The book itself lacks any kind of literary punch. Ostensibly about John Snow and cholera, in which there is probably an interesting story if told with focus, Johnson rambles pointlessly around campy urban planning doggerel.

I guess Johnson's reputation is so unassailable that editors don't bother to read what they publish. And that is what the book lacks, an editor.

The worst part is Johnson's attack on the foolish orthodoxy of the miasmaists, while he dutifully regurgitates the junior-high platitudes to Darwinist orthodoxy, when doing so adds absolutely nothing to the story, except to confirm his own Party loyalty.

Editorial Review:

A National Bestseller, a New York Times Notable Book, and an Entertainment Weekly Best Book of the Year

It's the summer of 1854, and London is just emerging as one of the first modern cities in the world. But lacking the infrastructure-garbage removal, clean water, sewers-necessary to support its rapidly expanding population, the city has become the perfect breeding ground for a terrifying disease no one knows how to cure. As the cholera outbreak takes hold, a physician and a local curate are spurred to action-and ultimately solve the most pressing medical riddle of their time.

In a triumph of multidisciplinary thinking, Johnson illuminates the intertwined histories of the spread of disease, the rise of cities, and the nature of scientific inquiry, offering both a riveting history and a powerful explanation of how it has shaped the world we live in.

Editorial Review:

“Making Connections” Microbiology: A Systems Approach is a non-majors/allied health microbiology textbook that has quickly become known for its unique organization, engaging writing style, and instructional art program. Cowan’s “building blocks” approach establishes the big picture first and then gradually layers concepts onto this foundation. This logical structure helps students build knowledge and connect important concepts.

A True Horror Story 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Fascinated by anything related to virology, I love this book. As a account of true events, it is a page turner. It does not read like the stereotypical stuffy non-fiction book. I could not put it down. I felt I was right there in the labs with the protagonists. I almost felt as though I would come down with the virus just by reading about it.

Good for Non-Fiction 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was required summer reading for me, and at first I was a little bit hesitant to pick up a non-ficiton book. I usually gravitate more towardes horror novels. However, this book suprised and delighted me. It read like a cohesive fiction novel, it didn't throw too many facts or figures or scientific jargan at you. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in viruses or any type of science field.

Editorial Review:

The dramatic and chilling story of an Ebola virus outbreak in a surburban Washington, D.C. laboratory, with descriptions of frightening historical epidemics of rare and lethal viruses. More hair-raising than anything Hollywood could think of, because it's all true.

I use this book to do Medical Missionary work throughout Central America, especially Haiti, where I usually find something I've never seen before and certainly have never treated. It is very user friendly and knowledgeable.

Excellent Source Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I have multiple books on infectious disease which cover the topic in great detail. These books are very useful when intricate detail is needed. However, the "Control of Communicable Diseases Manual" is a book that in its concise format is extremely valuable when you need to get a quick, yet comprehensive overview of a particular disease.

I highly recommend this volume.

Editorial Review:

The most widely recognized sourcebook on infectious diseases provides detailed, accurate, informative text for public health workers in official and voluntary health agencies, including those serving in the armed forces and other governmental agencies, and for all students of medicine. Each listing is easy to read and includes identification, infectious agent, occurrence, mode of transmission, incubation period, susceptibility and resistance. The 18th edition of this text is available, for the first time, online. Translations into several languages-currently Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Serbian, Indonesian and Italian make this text a global treasure.

Excellent Pathophysiology book 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent pathophysiology book available in the market. I am right now preparing for my step 2 but I wish I would have used this book for my step 1. I have a decent score on my step 1 and I have taken the exam recently and I think if somebody masters this book they can rock the exam. This book gives excellent information regarding many diseases. I am trying to study this book right now with CMDT, which is also by the same author. Because CMDT is a very concise text book of IM it doesn't explain all the pathophysiology for a disease but this book has all the answers about the pathophysiology of a disease. And I think its a worth buying book for all the medical students, if you study this book little by little during preclinical years it will help you very much understand the IM in the clinical years. I was surprize to find some infornation which I was craving for since few years of my med school. You will even find pathophysilogy of very rare syndromes, as for example I was amazed when I read about X linked Hypophosphatemic rickets. If you are like me who wants to have explanation behind everything, get this book today, you wan't be disappointed.

Editorial Review:

Now in its Fifth Edition, this trusted guide provides medical students with the link between basic science and clinical medicine. This concise text covers all the essentials in pathophysiology and 89 case studies allow students to apply their knowledge to actual clinical situations.

  • Review questions located throughout each chapter promote self-assessment and serve as an excellent review for USMLE Step 2
  • The two-color design showcases the abundant use of diagrams and tables

Great book 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I had a chance to review this book. I think the authors can make us much better understand, particularly one who is about to learn the concept of statistics. You can apply this book with the SPSS program in order to interpret the results. Anyway, I still like the calculation parts which are removed in this edition (3rd) compared with the last one. I think they can help someone, who is very interested in statistics, to understand better before go ahead to use the computer. It's a great book for the beginner.

Editorial Review:

Focusing on the statistical methods most frequently used in the health care literature and featuring numerous charts, graphs, and up-to-date examples from the literature, this text provides a thorough foundation for the statistics portion of nursing and all health care research courses. All Fifth Edition chapters include new examples and new computer printouts using the latest software, SPSS for Windows, Version 12. New material on regression diagnostics has been added. Includes a complete set of powerpoint slides on the Connection website

Editorial Review:

Paul Farmer has battled AIDS in rural Haiti and deadly strains of drug-resistant tuberculosis in the slums of Peru. A physician-anthropologist with more than fifteen years in the field, Farmer writes from the front lines of the war against these modern plagues and shows why, even more than those of history, they target the poor. This "peculiarly modern inequality" that permeates AIDS, TB, malaria, and typhoid in the modern world, and that feeds emerging (or re-emerging) infectious diseases such as Ebola and cholera, is laid bare in Farmer's harrowing stories of sickness and suffering.
Challenging the accepted methodologies of epidemiology and international health, he points out that most current explanatory strategies, from "cost-effectiveness" to patient "noncompliance," inevitably lead to blaming the victims. In reality, larger forces, global as well as local, determine why some people are sick and others are shielded from risk. Yet this moving account is far from a hopeless inventory of insoluble problems. Farmer writes of what can be done in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds, by physicians determined to treat those in need. Infections and Inequalities weds meticulous scholarship with a passion for solutions--remedies for the plagues of the poor and the social maladies that have sustained them.
