Editorial Review:

'LifeForce' by Chiropractor Jeffrey S. McCombs outlines a simple and effective approach to preventing and overcoming disease, illness, and other health concerns that has been used by many of the author's patients. The LifeForce Plan is a potent tool for detoxifying the body, reestablishing the normal flora of the tissues, and reawakening the body's innate ability to regulate, balance, and protect itself. It teaches us how to activate the endless life-force potential that resides in every cell of our bodies. The seemingly miraculous results are achieved through a time-proven approach to reversing the ravaging effects that antibiotics have had on our bodies. Though antibiotics are useful, it is their worldwide overuse, misuse, and general application that have produced a devastating imbalance. The LifeForce Plan reverses that imbalance and restores the regenerative, life-enhancing cycle of the body, as the dominant cycle over the degenerative, 'ageing' cycle. The Plan succeeds where other anti-Candida diets have continuously failed, due to key fundamental insights, and it also provides a way to balance the effects of antibiotics when their judicious use is necessary. This is not intended to be a typical diet book. It offers a way to achieve better 'biofeedback' from the body that will enable you to make dietary choices that will work for you. The Plan is a 'bridge' back to an optimal state of health for our bodies.

"House" without the snark 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This "classic collection of award-winning medical investigative reporting", published in 1988, is an excellent book. Each of the 25 case studies originally appeared as an "Annals of medicine" piece in the New Yorker, and there's not a dud in the bunch.

Most of the cases happened in the 1950's or 1960's, when sophisticated, CSI-era analytical techniques were unavailable. Nonetheless, there is no sense that these stories are dated. Roueche is a natural storyteller and has the rare ability to present technical aspects in a way that is intelligible to the non-expert reader, at just the right level of detail.

It's like 25 "House" episodes, but without the gratuitous obnoxiousness, condescension to the reader, or the ridiculous constraint that only a limping, misanthropic painkiller addict can be right.

Editorial Review:

Contains three fascinating tales of strange illnesses, rare diseases, poisons, and parasites--each tale a thriller of medical suspense by the incomparable Beron Roueche.

Is it really good? 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The eleventh edition is good in many aspects. But it cannot be denied that it is not as good as Koneman's book. Bailey and Scott is more suitable only for the bench technicians and not for researchers and graduate students. The book churns out table after table, in the name of comparative analysis. A student's mind will have difficulty in memorising and reproducing tables in the exam. In that sense, the lucid style of presentation in Koneman is commendable. Probably, the author of B&S did not have 'the student' in their mind when they wrote it. Another grossly lacking area is Parasitology. When compared to books written by Indian authors like SC Parija and Chatterjea, Bailey and Scott lags far behind. Probably, it is because parasitic infections are less in the US, which is why this area has been under emphasised.
As a gradute student in India, I would strongly encourage my friends and fellow microbiologists to singularly follow Koneman alone. Trying to use Koneman with Bailey and Scott or trying to substitute Koneman with Bailey and Scott is an exercise in futility.
These are my personal views only. Perhaps, students who want to finish studying clinical microbiology quickly because of the proximity of the exam dates, can go for Bailey and Scott. For MD students like me, we all in our college unanimously vote for the
Koneman.

Editorial Review:

The classic text known as the 'gold standard' in microbiology is now revised, reorganized, and up-to-date. Always comprehensive and current, this edition features even more new information on hot topics such as identification systems, quality control organisms, antiparasitic agents, HIV viral load testing, HIV genotyping, Hepatitis C virus, antivirals, and a new procedure for the motility test. In addition, thoroughly revised material reflects the latest advances and developments. New clinical case studies challenge students to think critically and apply what they've learned in realistic situations, and a compartmentalized organization keeps related topics together so information is easy to find.

very nicely designed with good diagrams and clear wording. The recommended web site in the book is not bad but could have a lot more information.

Editorial Review:

Appropriate for the non-major/allied health student, this authoritative text carefully explains the fundamentals of microbiology, providing a general overview of the principles followed by more detailed explanations. With its clear and concise writing style, Microbiology: A Human Perspective offers modern coverage on such topics as genomics, biofilms, and quorum sensing. Excellent Pathophysiology book 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 21 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent pathophysiology book available in the market. I am right now preparing for my step 2 but I wish I would have used this book for my step 1. I have a decent score on my step 1 and I have taken the exam recently and I think if somebody masters this book they can rock the exam. This book gives excellent information regarding many diseases. I am trying to study this book right now with CMDT, which is also by the same author. Because CMDT is a very concise text book of IM it doesn't explain all the pathophysiology for a disease but this book has all the answers about the pathophysiology of a disease. And I think its a worth buying book for all the medical students, if you study this book little by little during preclinical years it will help you very much understand the IM in the clinical years. I was surprize to find some infornation which I was craving for since few years of my med school. You will even find pathophysilogy of very rare syndromes, as for example I was amazed when I read about X linked Hypophosphatemic rickets. If you are like me who wants to have explanation behind everything, get this book today, you wan't be disappointed.

Editorial Review:

Now in its Fifth Edition, this trusted guide provides medical students with the link between basic science and clinical medicine. This concise text covers all the essentials in pathophysiology and 89 case studies allow students to apply their knowledge to actual clinical situations.

  • Review questions located throughout each chapter promote self-assessment and serve as an excellent review for USMLE Step 2
  • The two-color design showcases the abundant use of diagrams and tables

Editorial Review:

Delivering the facts to your fingertips, the Oxford Handbook of Tropical Medicine provides an accessible and comprehensive, signs-and-symptoms-based source of information on medical problems commonly seen in the tropics. A handy guide which can fit in the coat pocket and be used easily at the bedside, it has been designed to be as practical as possible with illustrations of blood films and stool smears, which are useful for diagnosis, as well as clinical features, diagnosis, and management. Medical conditions are ordered by system except for the five major tropical conditions - malaria, HIV/STIs, tuberculosis, diarrhoeal diseases, and acute respiratory infections - and fevers. In this new edition the sections on malaria, cardiology, chest medicine, gastroenterology, mental health and dermatology have undergone major revision, and there is new material on altitude sickness, heat stroke, avian flu and fuller poisoning. There is a greater emphasis on pediatric medicine and public health throughout, and new illustrations and photographs have been included to aid with diagnosis. Small enough to throw in your rucksack, this unique handbook is the ultimate quick reference guide for all those working in the tropics.
