Great Book 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I would give this book a 5 if it had information for men. I agree with an earlier reviewer about that point. But the book is very informative and the best book out there for individuals with Lyme. I wish I had read it sooner.

Best Book For A Lyme Patient 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I have 6 books on Lyme disease. This was the best for a patient to read and understand. It will help explain all your symptoms so you won't feel so alone. Great book for family and friends. Highlight the parts you want them to read and pass it along-easier than talking.

Informative and empathetic 5 out of 5 stars.

This book gives the reader a rundown of what is currently known about Lyme and what is currently available in testing and treatment. This is, of course, as it should be, but all the more so in a medical culture where doctors know little and explain less. Lyme is one of the those diseases that is quite difficult to diagnose, and our American doctors are not exactly skilled diagnosticians. Worse, those of us who suffer from diseases that are not seen by the average medico every day may well have gotten blank stares or belligerent scoldings from Dr. Crock, and walked away with nothing more than another charge to the insurance company (if we have one). Denise Lang is herself afflicted with Lyme, and knows all the problems we can have with doctors, and deals with them head on. But fear not - her co-author, Kenneth Liegner, is an MD and has a full grip on the scientific facts and the ability to explain those to laypersons. So we get the medicine as well as the reality of dealing with it.

Editorial Review:

This is the bible for the thousands who contract Lyme disease-one of our nation's fastest growing epidemics-each year, now completely revised and updated, including an expanded resource guide.

This book has helped me and others 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I thought this book was VERY helpful. My sister-in-law was overweight and sick from candida and when she followed the plan in this book she lost a TON of weight and she feels better than ever. I recently found out that some of my health problems are from candida. This book has been helpful to me also. I especially love the scriptures and the prayers. They have helped me through a hard thing. I have also lost ALOT of weight from following this plan, but more than that, I feel awesome physically. Also, several people in our church have been following this book and are doing great! DR. COLBERT HAS JUST RECENTLY RELEASED A NEW BIBLE CURE BOOK FOR CANDIDA WITH RECIPES FOR THE CANDIDA DIET. I THINK IT MIGHT EVEN BE BETTER THAN THIS ONE.

If you think you might be dealing with candida or yeast, then this is the book for you! I highly recommend it. It has truly changed my life.

Editorial Review:

People who suffer from fatigue, muscle aches, food sensitivities, psoriasis, asthma and many other common complaints may actually have a yeast infection. Too much yeast (specifically, "Candida Albicans") in the body is a problem that applies equally to both men and women. Candida Albican, a common yeast, normally lives in the human body where it causes no problems-provided the body's biochemistry is balanced and the immune system is strong. Dr. Don Colbert shares his insight on yeast infections and suggests cures to prevent them from weakening the immune system.

Editorial Review:

Environmental Health has established itself as the most succinct and comprehensive textbook on the subject. This extensively revised and rewritten third edition continues this tradition by incorporating new developments and by adding timely coverage of topics such as environmental economics and terrorism.

As in previous volumes, the new edition presents balanced assessments of environmental problems, examining their local and global implications, their short- and long-range impacts, and their importance in both developed and less developed countries of the world. The Third Edition also addresses emerging issues such as environmental justice, deforestation, the protection of endangered species, multiple chemical sensitivity, and the application of the threshold concept in evaluating the effects of toxic and radioactive materials.

Whether discussing acid rain, ozone depletion, global warming, or more traditional subjects such as the management and control of air, water, and food, Dade Moeller emphasizes the need for a systems approach. As with previous volumes, Environmental Health, Third Edition, offers a depth of understanding that is without peer. While it covers technical details, it is also a book that anyone with an interest in the environment can pick up and browse at random.

Fantastic book, and clearly the best that I read during my recovery from LD. Thorough, level-headed, wonderful.

A MUST BUY for ALL 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent overview of the disease with detail a doctor or interest patient would want to know. It handles information with non-alarmist views and scientific accuracy.

Even better is the updated new version that includes data on other tick-borne diseases. The writing shows respect for patients and the medical community.

I really like the information that addresses the questions about possible Lyme and other diseases in the midwest and other areas that are not considered to have lyme disease.

Editorial Review:

With millions around the world infected—and millions more at risk—Lyme and tick-related diseases are now today's fastest growing infectious diseases. Yet, even as the number of Lyme disease sufferers continues to climb and other dangerous tick-borne disorders emerge, diagnosis remains elusive, often hampering chances of early treatment. Now, this complete guide tells you everything you need to know to protect yourself and your family from the pain of Lyme disease, including expert advice on:
  • Recognizing the symptoms of Lyme disease
  • Finding the best medical treatment
  • Avoiding disease-carrying ticks
  • Accessing online information on vaccines, repellents, and the latest research
  • Finding self-help and support organizations, state medical complaint boards, products, and related services

ARGUABLY SECOND TO NONE! 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

As long as the issue concerns clinical microbiology, "Koneman's Color Atlas and Textbook of Diagnostic Microbiology" remains the undisputed champion. This newly published sixth edition is the definitive guide for both students and professionals. Its extensive and up-to-date coverage (of bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and virology) is second to none. In fact, this 1535-paged hardcover edition is an all-encompassing one-stop medical microbiology text. Very few standalone books come even close! And, its close-to 630 color sample figures exceed what many standalone color atlases boast of.
Relative to the previous editions, it is my wish to emphasize that every chapter of this book has undergone extensive and updated revisions. All aspects of theoretical and practical informations have received generous facelifts; and all the lab tests included conform to the current Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute's (formerly NCCLS) specifications. The same apply to the design, general layout, organization, and remarkable referencing of each topic. Every paragraph of this book was explained in simple, easy-to-understand English. Indeed, this book is a winner: anytime, anywhere! It is a true gold-standard!
There is so much positive qualities going for it that one may end-up writing pages while trying to cover them all. However, I must highlight the only downside I noticed, which is that this book is very heavy. Still, its well-bounded hardcover, reasonable retail price, as well as the high-quality papers used throughout its 1500-plus pages, offer logical compensation for the extra weight. Cheers!

Editorial Review:

Long considered the definitive work in its field, this new edition presents all the principles and practices readers need for a solid grounding in all aspects of clinical microbiology--bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, and virology. Tests are presented according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (formerly NCCLS) format. This extensively revised edition includes practical guidelines for cost-effective, clinically relevant evaluation of clinical specimens including extent of workup and abbreviated identification schemes. New chapters cover the increasingly important areas of immunologic and molecular diagnosis. Clinical correlations link microorganisms to specific disease states. Over 600 color plates depict salient identification features of organisms.

Not the best book on the subject 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 28 people found this review helpful.

Overly complex in exposition. Insufficiently illustrated. Represents an NIH viewpoint, not the best in science. Does not relate the molecular details to the cellular interactions sufficiently.

Very useful 5 out of 5 stars.

If you have lot of time to read, yes, this book is a MUST. But if you have 40 exams plus practices plus meetings plus, plus, plus.....Kuby is a good option. Anyway, never trust only in a single book.

Interesting Study on American Alcoholic Consumption 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 12 people found this review helpful.

William Rorabaugh, an associate professor of History at the University of Washington, provides a very interesting study of alcoholic consumption in the United States from the 18th century through the mid 1800s. He looks at the issue from the supply side (expense and technology in the production of distilled beverages and the import of rum) and the demand side. There is some eye-opening information in this work. The annual per capita consumption of alcohol between 1800-1830 exceeded 5 gallons; nearly triple today's consumption (p. 8). The demand for alcohol (particularly whiskey) stemmed from such things as alleged medical and dietary benefits, social camaraderie, a way to cope with a rapidly changing society, and such particle reasons as the lack of alternatives (water and milk was unhealthy and other substitutes were comparatively expensive) and strong beverages were needed to overcome the bland, monotonous American diet. Rorabaugh also devotes much of this study to the medical and moral critics of alcohol, including temperance societies. One doctor in the 1740s favored moderation: "not more than one bottle of wine each evening" (p. 32). I believe there is a lot of over-generalization in this study, especially when disillusionment over the voting system and the burden of living up to the ideals of the independent man are used as reasons for drinking (although drinking probably came before such feelings). Still, the book is extremely well-researched, with source notes at the end and several appendixes on estimating consumption of alcohol, cross-national comparisons of consumption, and cook books. The text, excluding the appendixes, is 222 pages and includes illustrations.
