Editorial Review:

The Eighth Edition of Developmental Biology expands its coverage of the mechanisms of development, the roles that environmental factors play in development, the medical applications of our knowledge of development, and the roles that development plays in evolution, highlighting all the incredible advances that have been made in the last three years. Written primarily for undergraduate biology majors, it also serves to introduce graduate students and medical students to developmental biology.

A completely updated text integrates classical developmental biology with contemporary techniques, including new material on: stem cells niches; microRNAs; sperm-egg attraction and binding; induction and maintenance of pluripotency; pioneer transcription factors and the recruitment of nucleosome remodeling proteins; left-right gene expression asymmetry; heart chamber specification; neural crest cell specification and differentiation; somite formation; human brain growth genes; the syndetome; new sources of muscle precursor cells; newly discovered mechanisms of teratogenesis; the effects of endocrine disruptors on human development; sex determination pathways in the brain; the effects of maternal nutrition on gene expression and disease susceptibility in the adult offspring; controversies over digit specification in birds and dinosaurs and whether mammalian blastomere fate is biased at the first division; and much more. Included with every copy of the book is Vade Mecum2: An Interactive Guide to Developmental Biology. In addition to a wealth of interactive content, this updated version includes a new Teachers' and Student's Resource with PowerPoint® slides of chick whole mounts and serial sections. A searchable PDF file on the CD contains full citations for the book's literature cited, with links to PubMed. The CD also includes Mary Tyler's laboratory manual, Developmental Biology: A Guide for Experimental Study, Third Edition, in electronic (PDF) format. textbook and provides more information for advanced students, historical, philosophical, and ethical perspectives on issues in developmental biology, movies, interviews, Web links, and updates. The website includes the full bibliography of literature cited in the book (over 5,000 references), most of which are linked to their PubMed citations.

Excellent book!! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the most complete and easy-to-read book ever! I have studied with Gerald Karp books since I was an undergraduate student (Biochemistry, and Karp book was always by my side, very useful). This book explain the cellular metabolism, structures (cytoskeleton, microtubules, filaments, genes, relations between genes and proteins, DNA repair, cell cycle, cell signalling, lot of concepts that are not easy to understand at first, Karp does it very simple. You will love this book. I can strongly recommend it. Another excellent book I can recommend is Molecular Biology of the CELL by Bruce Alberts....is excellent! and before you take an exam, I will suggest the "Outline of Molecular and Cell Biology" by the Schaum's series. Well, that's it for now, I wish you the best in your career (I have been there, I know how hard it can be and choose the proper books!) and always remember, keep working and practicing, because practice make the Master!! :)

Editorial Review:

For sophomore/junior-level courses in cell biology offered out of molecular and/or cell biology departments.
Cell and Molecular Biology gives students the tools they need to understand the science behind cell biology. Karp explores core concepts in considerable depth, and presents experimental detail when it helps to explain and reinforce the concept being explained. This fifth edition continues to offer an exceedingly clear presentation and excellent art program, both of which have received high praise in prior editions.

Editorial Review:

On dry land, most organisms are confined to the surface, or at most to altitudes of a hundred meters—the height of the tallest trees. In the oceans, though, living space has both vertical and horizontal dimensions: with an average depth of 3800 meters, the oceans offer 99% of the space on Earth where life can develop. And the deep sea, which has been immersed in total darkness since the dawn of time, occupies 85% of ocean space, forming the planet’s largest habitat. Yet these depths abound with mystery. The deep sea is mostly uncharted—only about 5 percent of the seafloor has been mapped with any reasonable degree of detail—and we know very little about the creatures that call it home. Current estimates about the number of species yet to be found vary between ten and thirty million. The deep sea no longer has anything to prove; it is without doubt Earth’s largest reservoir of life.

Combining the latest scientific discoveries with astonishing color imagery, The Deep takes readers on a voyage into the darkest realms of the ocean. Revealing nature’s oddest and most mesmerizing creatures in crystalline detail, The Deep features more than two hundred color photographs of terrifying sea monsters, living fossils, and ethereal bioluminescent creatures, some photographed here for the very first time. Accompanying these breathtaking photographs are contributions from some of the world’s most respected researchers that examine the biology of deep-sea organisms, the ecology of deep-sea habitats, and the history of deep-sea exploration.

An unforgettable visual and scientific tour of the teeming abyss, The Deep celebrates the incredible diversity of life on Earth and will captivate anyone intrigued by the unseen—and unimaginable—creatures of the deep sea.

Not bad 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is well written overall and it is fairly easy to learn from.

Having said that, I'd like to rip on a couple of issues. For some reason, it seems like nearly every time a picture is referred to in the text, it will be one or two pages behind the actual picture. This isn't a big deal if you're just reading a section, but if you actually sit down and read a chapter or two at a time, it becomes infuriating quickly. The book makes constant references to pictures, so it really slows down reading to have to flip the page over, find the figure, flip back, find your place, and continue reading again. The fact that this flaw could have been easily fixed makes it all the more annoying to me. Also, some of the chapters seem a little out of order. I often find myself reading sections that are 10 chapters apart, which cover very similar topics.

Another thing that is lacking in a few places are explanations of basic biology and chemistry concepts that are presented for the first time in the text. I know that you would be expected to know it already, but there are places where a sentence or two of explanation on a concept would be very appropriate and helpful.

If you don't mind constantly flipping the pages to see the referred figure, this really isn't a bad book. The figures are generally helpful and I have certainly learned a lot more from reading this book than I did attending lecture. I would probably recommend it despite its flaws.

Editorial Review:

The brand new author team of Prescott, Harley and Klein's Microbiology continues the tradition of past editions by providing a balanced, comprehensive introduction to all major areas of microbiology. Because of this balance, the Seventh Edition of Microbiology is appropriate for microbiology majors and mixed majors courses. The new authors have focused on readability, artwork, and the integration of several key themes (including evolution, ecology and diversity) throughout the text, making an already superior text even better..

Microbiology Lab Manual 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Great manual with colored photographs. The only problem is that after flipping through it several times the pages begin to tear from the rings, so invest in some reinforcement labels. Didn't receive the product as quick as I thought but at least I paid less than buying from the on-campus bookstore.

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

this is the best science book in the world, and i don't even like science. the book keeps me entertained and i love it. i love it so much i am not going to re-sell it after my class ends and save money. I would rather keep the book.

Editorial Review:

Alcamo s Fundamentals of Microbiology, Eighth Edition provides a firm foundation in microbiology with an emphasis on human disease. It is written for students in nursing and allied health programs and is appropriate for non-majors microbiology courses. The Eighth Edition of this classic text, revised by award winning educator Jeffrey Pommerville, retains the late Ed Alcamo s student friendly style. Microbiology is a rapidly advancing and dynamic discipline. Dr. Pommerville presents new content on recent discoveries, such as information on the avian flu and the 2006 Midwest mumps outbreak, in a manner that is directly applicable to students. Dr. Pommerville also integrates new teaching pedagogies, based on his years of teaching experience, to promote problem-based learning andfacilitate mastery of concepts.

Useless 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this as a first year medical student in hopes that it would simplify and better illustrate the complicated world of microbiology. In the end, it was a totally useless book. The pictures are average but really low yeild. If you are a med student trying to find pictures, I strongly reccomend you look elsewhere. If you are an undergrad and have tons of time on your hands, get it and waste a nice weekend or two. Otherwise stick to the assigned books. If you are a proffesor who has chosen this as an assigned book, shame on you!!!

Images are great references. 5 out of 5 stars.

The images are great for referencing the different cells charachteristics under a microscope. Convenient when you are studying somewhere besides lab.

half satisfied 4 out of 5 stars.

i was happy to receive the textbook i needed ...it took a little longer than i expected to arrive...there were two page missing from the text and they were placed in the book for me to tape back in

Good as far as it goes 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This was a required text for my micro class. It was sometimes a little helpful, but it mostly didn't have the answers to my questions. It covers too much in too few pages. The only time that I really found it to be helpful was in reading test results. When I wasn't sure if, for example, my VP broth had really changed color enough to be a positive result, the large glossy pictures were nice. However, when I was trying to figure out colonial morphology, only about half the terms that we were supposed to know were covered in the book. Not so helpful. So, as I stated earlier, this book is helpful when it covers the information that you need, but I was never sure if what I was looking for would be covered in the book.

Received this textbook in an orderly fashion. Was in the condition I expected it to be in. Have already used it to study for my microbiology class and find the textbook pretty interesting. Great transaction! Great price! Thank you!

Editorial Review:

Making Connections Microbiology: A Systems Approach is a non-majors/allied health microbiology textbook that has quickly become known for its unique organization, engaging writing style, and instructional art program. Cowans building blocks approach establishes the big picture first and then gradually layers concepts onto this foundation. This logical structure helps students build knowledge and connect important concepts..
