Read it, know it, live it. If things keep going they they have with people not caring about the Constitution, we won't have. You know the adage, ignore it and it will go away, it's very true for the constitution. The 2008 RNC is a standout example of this where the police were not only suppressing the free speech of the demonstrators but also beating and arresting registered members of the press with press credentials clearly displayed. This was not just here and there accidents or misunderstandings. This was an organized act of suppressing the media. They threatened them with drawn weapons and beat them. The only way to stop the rise of fascism is to step up and protect your rights and the rights of your neighbors. Make know mistake, fascism is here. It's not just starting, it is well entrenched. Are you going to stand by, like the citizens of Nazi Germany, and do nothing. How long until dissidents start disappearing? We already have prison camps. Don't think your citizenship will protect you from being sent off somewhere. Just as soon as the government thinks you're apathetic enough, they will declare martial law and you will be required to have travel papers to go from city to city. This is deadly serious stuff. It makes me cringe whenever our government criticizes another government for suppressing their citizens rights. I didn't used to feel that way. I used to be proud of our government now our government is an embarrassment. If you think Obama's going to fix it, think again. The guys already sold out, just examine his recent voting record.

Editorial Review:

Collected here in one affordable volume are the most important documents of the United States of America: The Constitution of the United States of America, with the Bill of Rights and all of the Amendments; The Declaration of Independence; and the Articles of Confederation. These three documents are the basis for our entire way of life. Every citizen should have a copy.

Glannon is fantastic. This is a great book to review before exams, and it also is a great value!

Useful & recommended 4 out of 5 stars.

Though I ended up not having much use for this book due to my professor's distinctive teaching methodology, I still found it helpful in clarifying the basic concepts of Torts. The author injects a slightly dorky sense of humor into the narrative, which makes the information more accessible and easier to grasp. He also has a very clear, conversational writing style. Overall recommended (at least if you don't have my Torts professor).

I Think You Can do Better Than This 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I'm not being law-snobby, I promise.

I bought the book because I was struggling to get my head around remedies, and although it helped, I ended up buying Lexis' "Understanding Contracts," too.

I should disclaim that what follows is based on the remedies section (that's all I used it for). That's a big piece of contracts, but maybe the rest of the book, which I didn't explore, is better.

Okay, here goes:

I found the E&E book to be imprecise with some concepts and vocabulary. It could be my own quirkiness, but to me that imprecision was maddening. In one paragraph, a plaintiff had "moved," "pled" and also "applied" for summary judgement. Applied??? SJ isn't a credit card! And it's not a pleading for that matter, either.

If you find these types of imprecision trivial, the book might be for you. They left me wondering if there were any important issues being confused, as well. We all know that law exams ask us to identify doctrinal issues, weight them, and (if the opportunity presents itself) apply the particular policy analysis that our respective professors find endearing. The extent to which a secondary source like E&E leads us astray on the doctrine is the same extent to which we will be led astray on our exams.

If you are like me, you should buy "Understanding Contracts" from the corporate mongers at Lexis. I felt like the concepts and vocabulary were applied in a more precise, crisp way. It will save you from trying to infer what the author is trying to say from what the author did say, and it will save you from writing snooty remarks and question marks in the margin -- time you could be spending learning Contracts.

good review for corporations class. it is based on the model code, and sometimes DE. but if you need NY law, this book doesn't help that much. but the explanations are clear and interesting.

Decent 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I generally like the Examples and Explanations series, however "Corporations" is not one of their best. As other reviewers have mentioned, this book focuses primarily on the Model Business Corporations Act and does not include cites to Delaware or other states. Usually, I could find the cites myself, but this added a layer of work when I made my outline. Also, some cases were not explained succintly in one place--rather, the analysis was spread throughout a chapter and continued through the examples. This was distracting--it was more helpful when the key cases of a doctrine were summarized in one place and then briefly referenced later on. If your class focuses on Delaware you should also beware that there have been several key developments since 2006 that will alter some of the chapters. Other than that, it is hard to beat E&E for a good review of the material and "Corporations" does the job.

    Editorial Review:

This practical and straightforward study guide has earned its enduring popularity by demystifying corporate law for students who do not have a business background. "Corporate Law: Examples & Explanations, 5th Edition" presents a full review of the legal issues that arise in modern corporations.

Ok, but No Freer 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

E&E is a great series. I've found many of the books helpful in supplementing law school reading that can be at times difficult to synthesize. However, Freer's supplement on civil procedure is unbeatable.

Law school is about knowing the rule and applying the facts. E&E is great at helping you to know the rule. However, it doesn't help you figure out how to apply the facts, especially in a way pertinent to law school exams. Freer's book is full of examples and frameworks that assure success on your CivPro exam. This is especially true of the frameworks he lays out for analyzing Personal Jurisdiction problems and Erie.

Buy Freer and you'll be happier going into your final.

    Editorial Review:

Students know they can count on expert study guide author Joseph W. Glannon to clarify even the most complicated topics. Unquestionable effectiveness earned his civil procedure guides their bestselling status. Extensively revised and updated for its Fifth Edition, "Civil Procedure: Examples & Explanations" continues to introduce the principles of civil procedure and illustrate how they apply in typical cases.

Being in the financial services I am always looking for new and exciting books in my field...sadly, this is not one of them. The book was dry and made for a long read.

The upside is that the authors seem to know what they are talking about and are able to explain the ideas behind a variety of different asset protection strategies.

The authors also explain the benefits and drawbacks of each asset protection strategy, though they do not go into very much detail on some of their ideas.

One of the reasons is probably because at the end of the book, they provide their website as a reference. I don't have a problem with that, but it would have been nice if they had been able to make the information more interesting so that you didn't feel like you had to go to their website to "get the good stuff".

Strategies that are effective and legal for putting one’s assets safely out of reach

In today’s increasingly litigious world, the shielding of assets has become a prominent issue for financial planners, business owners, and high-net-worth individuals. Asset Protection details methods that are both legally and morally legitimate for protecting one’s assets from creditors, lawsuits, and scams.

Bringing economic common sense and legitimacy to an area that is drowning in gimmickry, two of today’s top lawyers examine the fundamental issues in this growing area, avoiding dense legalese to make the book accessible to anyone. Asset Protection covers everything readers want to know about:

    • Establishing an effective asset protection program
    • Today’s most popular, established strategies
    • Newer strategies that are still being resolved by the courts

Very helpful resource 4 out of 5 stars.
22 of 22 people found this review helpful.

This review refers to the 13th edition of the book, which does cover the new bankruptcy law revision of 2006. Please read the editorial and customer reviews as to why this book was so helpful.

The author does a good job explaining how to file your own bankruptcy "pro se" (which means you are your own attorney and responsible for finding the answers to your own legal questions.)

At the time the 13th edition was printed, the author didn't know if any of the state bankruptcy courts would grant an indigent filer relief from the bankruptcy filing fee. This is because there was a difference between the federal agency that created the exemption document and the agency that says such requests can be granted. Apparently, this difference of opinion has since been resolved. In my state, Washington, the judge did grant me exemption from filing the court fee, a savings of over [...].

My bankruptcy was a pretty straightforward chapter 7, even though I had taken out a business license as a sole proprietor. As I had no clients and no business income, I could go ahead and file as an individual.

The author commends the reader for having taken charge of their financial crisis and having made the difficult decision to file for bankruptcy. It would also have been helpful if he'd included a few helpful tips on emotional and mental preparation. For example, people under stress tend to forget common sense advice like: get enough sleep, exercise, and healthy food. Organize all your financial records in a quiet and neat environment, etc. Write down what you've done and what you need to accomplish. And so forth.

In my case, because I could have been better organized, I ended up paying two times an amendment fee because I forgot to include all creditors on my mailing matrix and other related forms.

(As a side note, many credit card companies own their own credit collections agencies with completely different names. To be on the safe side, list both the original creditor and the "collection agency" that they supposedly "sold" the debt to in your bankruptcy forms. However, when totaling the debt, do not count the same amount twice. On your mailing matrix, include both the original creditor and any collection agencies they have sold their debt to. This will cover your rear end. If you list only the collection agency and not the original creditor, you might be responsible for paying off the debt because the original creditor wasn't listed in your bankruptcy forms.)

Student loans are usually not discharged but you should go ahead and list them anyway so the judge knows your total debt load.

Most filers choose to hire an attorney. I was one of three people who chose to go "pro se" out of over 30 filers. That really surprised me. My meeting with the trustee lasted less than five minutes.

Just because someone goes with an attorney doesn't mean that attorney will be complete and thorough. I witnessed two attorneys who did not properly prepare their clients for potential questions the trustee asked, all of which are described in this book in a special listing. In my case, the trustee did not ask all the questions listed in the book but I was sure glad the author listed them so I could be prepared in case he did choose to ask them. Did those people get their money's worth? I don't know.

The creditor's meeting is when you can tell the trustee if there have been any changes since you first filed for bankruptcy. Since this meeting is recorded now is the time to tell them. In my case, I reported assets I had failed to list (hobby supplies, etc.), assets that had been stolen from my home this month, and a car I no longer owned as it had been auctioned off by a towing company.

The two biggest reasons people file for bankruptcy are medically related and poor credit card usage. Both those reasons fit my profile. (Actually, I was very good at using a credit card as I remember charging them to the limit.) I cut up all my credit cards and now use only my debit card, cash, or checks. I now have a financial budget and feel like a load has been lifted off my shoulders.

The only reason I have for repairing my credit rating is if I choose to buy a house. At this time I don't have any plans for doing so. However, for those who do want to improve their credit score, your best bet is to see if your local credit union or bank will give you a secured credit card, which will only allow you to "charge" amounts that you have placed in a special account tied to the card. It is a combinations debit and credit card. You can only "charge" what is in your secured account but you get the protection and benefits of a credit card.

The new law states that filers must take a pre and post budget class. These cost money in Washington state.

If you choose to go "pro se" but hire a typist to prepare your documents, you are still responsible for all the information contained in the forms.

Beware that your filing is public knowledge. I was surprised at the number of predatory lenders that sent me mail immediately after I filed. There was also one attorney who sent me a solicitation letter. You must shred all these letters for your own good.

    Editorial Review:

In these times of massive credit card debt and stagnating incomes, filing for bankruptcy has become the only relief for thousands of people. The information in How to File for Bankruptcy is so complete that a person can file virtually on his own, without needing to hire a lawyer. By no means does the book encourage filing for bankruptcy, but it will help anyone in serious financial trouble determine if bankruptcy might be a sensible course to take, and examines what kind is appropriate for different individuals. All of the necessary forms are included, complete with explicit directions. Like all Nolo Press titles, this is a straightforward, no-nonsense book of useful advice and specific guidance, written in clear, easy-to-understand language.
