This fourth edition of Justice Administration: Police, Courts, and Corrections Management continues to be the sole book of its kind: an examination of all facets of the criminal justice system as well as several related matters of interest to prospective and actual administrators. It addresses the three components of the justice system: police, courts, and corrections. More than 30 case studies are desseminated throughout the book; also included are chapters on personnel and financial administration, rights of criminal justice employees, technology, discipline and liability, and futures. Articles from Law Enforcement News and other sources are interspersed throughout, and the book has been updated with added sections on ethics, bioterrorism, racial profiling, school violence, vehicle pursuits, judicial selection, jury administration, gender bias, and women in corrections. Useful as an important reference work for justice administrators and others in police departments, the court system, corrections, as well as defense attorneys and prosecuting attorneys.

The book arrived in great condition. The material covered is great. I am very pleased.

I teach a course at a local community college and use this book as my text. The book is relatively cheap, especially for college books, and very well written. It describes some of our most influential Supreme Court cases in the past half century. The style that it is written in is ideal for learning and keeping the reader interested.

First it gives a short one page synopsis of the case that sets out the basis facts. It then quotes the actual Supreme Court oral argument but edits the transcript to give it a more narrative style. The editting is great for explaining the background legal principle while setting out the facts to make the read more enjoyable. After the editted transcript of the oral argument, a short editted version of the Court's opinion is printed. This opinion is nicely editted so as to keep readers interested, unlike the full text of most of the cases that would scare lawyers away.

In summation, the book is organized very well and suitable for those wanting to learn about history, those wanting to learn legal principles, or even those just wanting a fun read.

Editorial Review:

This unique insider's look at the Supreme Court in session includes live recordings and transcripts of actual landmark cases, including Miranda v. Arizona (the right to remain silent), Roe v. Wade (abortion rights), Bowers v. Hardwick (gay rights), Regents v. Bakke (reverse discrimination), Loving v. Virginia (interracial marriage), United States v. Richard Nixon (Watergate), and many others. Previously only available through a visit to the National Archive in Washington, these tapes bring pivotal moments in American legal history to life.

This book is very vague especially relating to car accidents. I had much better luck with Car Accident Secrets. It contained more information and was very easy, had step by step instructions to follow. I would recommend purchasing Car Accident Secrets if you have been involved in a car accident.

Editorial Review:

The case by which the U.S. Supreme Court declared itself the highest court in the land.

When Ed Johnson, a black man, was wrongly convicted in 1906 of rape and sentenced to death in Tennessee, Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan issued a stay of execution, declaring that Johnson's right to a fair trial had been violated and that he had been railroaded through the criminal justice system. The interference of the Supreme Court was not well received back in Chattanooga. A violent mob answered this federal "interference" by dragging Johnson from his jail cell, beating him, and hanging him from a bridge. Local police did nothing to prevent the lynching, nor were any members of the mob arrested. For the first and only time in history, an enraged Supreme Court conducted a criminal trial to enforce its authority. It brought criminal contempt of court charges against the sheriff, his deputies, and members of the lynch mob.

The first book written about these highly charged events, Contempt of Court raises issues of federalism versus states' rights that are as timely today as they were ninety years ago. Johnson's case led to a precedent-setting criminal trial that is unique in the annals of American jurisprudence. Mark Curriden and Leroy Phillips's riveting tale will prove essential reading for all interested in understanding how American justice works.

Every American Should Own This Book 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This really is a fantastic book. Professor Meador, having spent half a century as a teacher at one of the world's finest law schools and as a consultant and advisor to legal scholars and judges from state courts to the Supreme Court, manages to speak to everyone who hasn't had the opportunity to attend law school. Reading this book won't make you a lawyer, but you will understand exactly what happens in our court systems - a must for new law students, foreign lawyers and anyone interested in how their nation's legal systems work. It was an invaluable help in my first year of law school, and worth every dime.

Editorial Review:

American Courts describes the state judicial systems and the federal judicial system. It then sketches in simple, understandable terms many of the complications stemming from the coexistence of multiple court systems applying various bodies of law—circumstances unique to American federalism. Describes judicial personnel, with special attention to judges and the concept of an independent judiciary. Likewise, the role of lawyers is described, underscoring the significance of an independent bar. The author is the James Monroe Professor of Law at the University of Virginia where he teaches Civil Procedure and Federal Courts and directs the Law School's Graduate Program for judges.

Silliness in Court 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

How can you go to court and not crack a smile or a laugh and get tossed out by the judge for lack of seriousiness after reading this great collection of amazing lawyers and respondents taking themselves way too seriously? I wonder if these folks read their own transcripts would the "I said that???" come up more than once. Funny and great pokes at a serious function of our society. Great read.

Disorder in the Court! 5 out of 5 stars.

Pretty funny.....We do have the best justice system in the world (I think so) but anything dealing with humans and our many faults is sometimes so funny as this book is. We have to laugh at ourselves and some of the the things we do or say, and our rationale behind it (what we do or say) and not take ourselves so seriously.Very enjoyable book.

Not that funny 1 out of 5 stars.

I thought that this would be really funny, but it was pretty droll. I dontated it to the library without reading more than 15 pages.

    Editorial Review:

Although the right to trial by jury is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, in recent years both criminal and civil juries have been criticized as incompetent, biased, and irresponsible. For example, the O.J. Simpson criminal jury's verdict produced a racial divide in opinions about that trial. And many Americans still hold strong views about the jury that awarded millions of dollars to a woman who spilled a cup of McDonald's coffee on herself. It's said that there are "judicial hellholes" where local juries provide "jackpot justice" in medical malpractice and product liability cases with corporate defendants. Are these claims valid? This monumental and comprehensive volume reviews over fifty years of empirical research on civil and criminal juries and returns a verdict that strongly supports the jury system. Rather than relying on anecdotes, Vidmar and Hans--renowned scholars of the jury system--place the jury system in its historical and contemporary context, giving the stories behind important trials while providing fact-based answers to critical questions. How do juries make decisions and how do their verdicts compare to those of trial judges and technical experts? What roles do jury consultants play in influencing trial outcomes? Can juries understand complex expert testimony? Under which circumstances do capital juries decide to sentence a defendant to die? Are juries biased against doctors and big business? Should juries be allowed to give punitive damages? How do juries respond to the insanity defense? Do jurors ignore the law? Finally, the authors consider various suggestions for improving the way that juries are asked to carry out their duties. After briefly comparing the American jury to its counterparts in other nations, they conclude that our jury system, despite occasional problems, is, on balance, fair and democratic, and should remain an indispensable component of the judicial process for the foreseeable future.

This book is my constant Contracts companion. In class, I have two books open: the casebook & this one. It's super helpful, and I love the funny comic for each case that serves as a visual reminder of the case facts. I wish I had one of these books for all of my boring casebooks.

    Editorial Review:

Included in each case analysis are the case procedural basis, fact, issues, decision and rationale, and analysis. Additional quick memory aids include headnotes, instant facts, black letter rules, case vocabulary, and graphics. Each chapter begins with an introduction of its concepts presented in simple terms, and an alphabetical table of cases is provided.

    Editorial Review:

The world is going through another important transition. International institutions have unquestionably been weakened as the United States works to sort through complicated issues such as the Afghan and Iraq wars, the use of torture and secret detention, Guantanamo, climate change, and nuclear proliferation. In recent memory, top Bush Administration advisers have spoken and written about the powerlessness of international law and its irrelevance-or worse-for the United States. The worldwide public needs and deserves a more accurate account. In The Power and Purpose of International Law, Mary Ellen O'Connor provides such an account by explaining the purpose of international law and the powers of enforcement it has available to achieve its mission.
International law supports order in the world and the attainment of humanity's fundamental goals of peace, prosperity, respect for human rights, and protection of the natural environment. The author argues that these goals can best be realized through international law, which uniquely has the capacity to bind even a superpower. It is also through international law that competing powers and divergent cultures can reach consensus. By exploring the roots of international law, and by looking at specific events in its history, this book demonstrates the why and the how of international law and its enforcement. It directly confronts the claim that international law is "powerless" and that working within the framework of international law is useless or counter-productive. As the world moves forward and reexamines international norms and institutions, it is crucial that both leaders and their citizens understand the true power and purpose of international law, and why humanity has persistently accepted it as true law.
