Great source of info 5 out of 5 stars.

For all those up and comming law studients, this is a great information source. Step by step, the steps of the litigation process are illustrated. In addition, it is written in such a way that even a person with no legal background (like myself) can understand it. I highly recomend this book.

Thumbs down 1 out of 5 stars.

This book is very poorly written. There are many typographical errors throughout the book and many, many inaccuracies in the content. Some terms are used incorrectly and instead of assisting the reader in learning civil litigation, it creates confustion and frustration.

I would not recommend this book to anyone - especially students.

I hope the new edition is worth the paper it's written on.

Editorial Review:

Civil Litigation, fifth edition, combines the principles of litigation practice with practical applications that are geared especially to the needs of the paralegal student. The text contains numerous sample legal documents, including case commentaries that set text material into practical context. The text features a new CD-ROM full of study and practice materials, and guidance to useful Web Sites that paralegal students can use as reference tools throughout their careers.

Very Witty and Wise Advice 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This book contains a wide variety of articles that were written by James McElhaney for the American Bar Association's Litigation journal over the years. He dispenses a tremendous amount of wisdom collected from his own experience and that of other lawyers.

McElhaney covers almost every conceivable subject for the trial lawyer. What I particularly enjoyed is that there are ninety chapters that are easily accessible because they are usually only six or seven pages long. For instance, he has an enlightening chapter on trial practice that every lawyer must read. He covers the following: how to keep the client happy, getting rid of cases you have that have turned out "to be dogs," how to get along with judges, trying to settle cases, and deciding when it is time to leave your firm. In short, this book is filled with superb tips, anecdotes, and many war stories that make the pages turn very quickly.

    Editorial Review:

Trial Notebook offers hundreds of techniques and tactics for every stage of a trial's progress in spare, lively, memorable prose. You get strategies grounded in actual courtroom experience that will improve the effectiveness of your advocacy.

A MUST READ! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Each arena has it's Michael Jordan. In the courtroom, it is David Berg. And Berg has taken this natural talent and time-honed skill to a new level as he unlocks certain secrets that have catapulted him to the top of his profession. What most have considered his "magic," he explains as common sense practice. This book should be a required text at every law school. Those in the legal profession should not just read this, they should study it. The difference it will make in case results more than pays for the book, over and over again.

    Editorial Review:

David Berg knows how to win cases. And he knows how to tell a story. In The Trial Lawyer: What It Takes To Win Berg puts both skills to dazzling use in an engaging and instructive guide to winning at trial. Berg covers the key elements of a trial - persuasion, discovery, jury studies, voir dire, opening arguments, cross examinations, preparing and presenting witnesses and closing arguments - but he also shares his thoughts on what it takes to win - whether winning means a decisive verdict or an extraordinary settlement.

Good book - well written 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I had to buy this book as part of a college course curriculum.

This was an informative and well written book which was also easy to read and follow. I can't stand boring complicated college books so this one was a welcome change. It really helped to break down the litigation process and defined many terms and uncomplicated some things that would have been quite difficult otherwise.

I'd definitely recommend it to anyone just wanting to know more about litigation, especially those who don't want to be bogged down with technical legal jargon which is hard for most people to understand.

    Editorial Review:

The Litigation Paralegal: A Systems Approach, 4th Edition, is a completely updated guide to the litigation process, identifying the paralegal's role in each step. It covers numerous developments in the electronic practice of law, including e-mail security and confidentiality, electronic filing, on-line exercises, and helpful websites. The Litigation Paralegal is noted for its interesting and clear case scenario. This primary case is used to demonstrate concepts and paralegal practice skills, while other case scenarios are used to facilitate application of the skills and knowledge gained from reviewing the main case. With its law-office approach, logical arrangement, and excellent use of forms, checklists, and other documentation, this book is as helpful and appealing to the practicing paralegal as it is to the student.

    Editorial Review:

They couldn t have been more different one a teenager from affluent suburbia, the other a little kid from the poor part of the city. But John Tucker Mahoney and Shareif Hall would come to share a common experience as random, unsuspecting victims of terrible tragedies. Tucker would be felled by a tiny piece of metal, a BB fired from the powerful, new-generation air rifle he got for his 16th birthday. Shareif, four years old, would be riding a transit system escalator on the day before Thanksgiving, when his brand new Fila shoe would get caught in the contraption s giant metal teeth.. Tucker and Shareif would also share one other thing. The tragedies that befell them were not merely bad luck but the result of wrongful, egregious conduct. Both cases involved bad actors : the manufacturer who sold some 7.5 million defective PowerLine air rifles (and later refused to remove them from circulation), and the transit authority that failed to properly maintain and upgrade its moving stairways. The boys families, powerless to restore health or happiness, could not do much to help Tucker and Shareif. So they did the only other thing they could. They sought justice using the sole remedy available to them the legal system. Partners in the same Philadelphia law firm would represent the families and battle for them against well-known corporate entities: Daisy Manufacturing Company and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA), a government-related agency. Both would deny they were at fault, one going so far as to conceal and even fabricate critical evidence. With crisp narration and great fidelity to detail, Robert Zausner s tells their harrowing story.

International taxation made understandable 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book makes international taxation easy to understand.
It is a perfect beginner's book as it reveals the ideas behind otherwise incomprehensible laws.
For those who later on get lost in the maze you can always come back to the basics in this book.
I haven't seen any other writer explain the basics so well.
The only thing that I am disappointed with at this moment, October 2004, is that there is not an updated version available.
I would buy it the moment it comes out.
Also, I agree with one of the reviewers of this book that 4 years in the international taxation world is a very long time.
We now need more updated information on tax shelters in this book for one thing.
Mr. Isenbergh please update this book and publish it.

    Editorial Review:

International Taxation discusses international aspects of tax systems originating in national environments. It focuses on U.S. taxation as applied to economic activity with an international element. Divided into four sections: basic elements of international taxation, inbound U.S. taxation, outbound U.S. taxation, and income tax treaties.

START WITH THIS BOOK FIRST 5 out of 5 stars.

If you want to make less mistakes, save time and money, it's best to start with this book so you can get the correct service, venue, and evidence organized to file and win. I found the chapter on how to write a demand letter and settle your claim before it gets to court very helpful. They even offer sample letters you use to settle your case. Nolo Press seems to put together the best legal self help books.

Win in Small Claims Court! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If you have a claim involving $5,000 or less, you can easily and inexpensively bring an action in Small Claims Court. But even though Small Claims Court is designed for non-attorneys (in fact, attorneys are not allowed) you still must have a basic understanding of the rules of evidence and know how to put on your case. Invest a little time to read this book, and you will stand a much better chance of winning.

Excellent self help guide on the subject 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you are reading this review, you are most probably a prospective plaintiff considering recovering losses you incurred in an auto accident through the small claims court process. This guide will help you tremendously. The NoLo series is an incredible service to mankind. It is the equivalent to the Dummies series focused on the Law. And, who besides expensive lawyers really understand the Law? Readers who have studied NoLo books!

The book is very well organized. Even though there is a lot of material, it is easy to extract the information pertaining to your very specific situation. The author covers a lot of those; as he dedicates specific chapters to auto repairs, auto accidents, lord-tenant dispute, etc... The author states that he covers the main type of cases that account for 99% of the cases tried in small claim courts. I believe him. If your case is outside those presented, there is a good chance it does not belong in small claims court.

The author gives crucial information about the basics of small claim courts. If you are not a lawyer, you are unfamiliar with all the procedures associated with it. Thanks to this book, you will know exactly what to do and when to file, prepare, and try a claim in small claims court. Once you have done the studying and the preparing it is not all that difficult. And, this book allows you to navigate through a bureaucratic process that would appear overwhelming and Byzantine otherwise.

This is my second NoLo book and hopefully the last. Who wants to deal with the Law if you don't have to? My first one was on how to fight a ticket. Thanks to NoLo, I reduced the price of my ticket by $120. Now, I anticipate recovering the cost of a fender bender where I am dealing with one uninsured and one unwilling party. It is not fun, but those NoLo books allow you to uphold your rights when you have to.
