Needed a change and this was the perfect guide! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I knew I needed a change in life and a new career. But I new it needed to be something that paid decent and would give me job security. So I bought this book, read about the different fields and then handed it over to my teenage daughter to get her thinking about her future....This book guided me in the right direction and now I am in school and will graduate in early 2008. I will have job security and a decent salary until I retire. If you are interested in the medical field then this book is a great guide in helping you decide what you would like to do and how much education you need, where to go to school and what exams you must pass. Great book for those looking for a career change or just thinking of trying something else in life.

Editorial Review:

This book offers a distinct advantage over other books of this type. It is two books in one - a comprehensive Career Guide plus a dynamic Job Finder. First, it presents comprehensive health care occupational descriptions and then provides resources to locate job announcements, job hotlines, job fairs, placement services, directories, associations, and job related books. This dual format permits comparisons between specialities and offers insight into qualifications, cross training potential, and pay. You can easily locate occupations with similar skills and required training. Opportunities abound for all levels of education from a high school diploma to Doctorate Degrees. Each occupational description lists required education and/or on-the-job training.

Editorial Review:

The Earth's biodiversity-the rich variety of life on our planet-is disappearing at an alarming rate. And while many books have focused on the expected ecological consequences, or on the aesthetic, ethical, sociological, or economic dimensions of this loss, Sustaining Life is the first book to examine the full range of potential threats that diminishing biodiversity poses to human health.
Edited and written by Harvard Medical School physicians Eric Chivian and Aaron Bernstein, along with more than 100 leading scientists who contributed to writing and reviewing the book, Sustaining Life presents a comprehensive--and sobering--view of how human medicines, biomedical research, the emergence and spread of infectious diseases, and the production of food, both on land and in the oceans, depend on biodiversity. The book's ten chapters cover everything from what biodiversity is and how human activity threatens it to how we as individuals can help conserve the world's richly varied biota. Seven groups of organisms, some of the most endangered on Earth, provide detailed case studies to illustrate the contributions they have already made to human medicine, and those they are expected to make if we do not drive them to extinction. Drawing on the latest research, but written in language a general reader can easily follow, Sustaining Life argues that we can no longer see ourselves as separate from the natural world, nor assume that we will not be harmed by its alteration. Our health, as the authors so vividly show, depends on the health of other species and on the vitality of natural ecosystems.
With a foreword by E.O. Wilson and a prologue by Kofi Annan, and more than 200 poignant color illustrations, Sustaining Life contributes essential perspective to the debate over how humans affect biodiversity and a compelling demonstration of the human health costs.

Should Have Bought It for Myself 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this cookbook as a present for a friend. As I, myself, am interested in health food and adore the beautifully constructed full-picture versions of the Williams-Sonoma cookbooks, I had a hard time actually GIVING this present to her (*Sigh*...I suppose I shall have to buy my own, now).

This cookbook is great for the beginner in 'Healthful Cooking.' The beginning section is devoted to standard terms and proper cooking/preparation techniques involved with natural food preparation. The entire book features huge, wonderfully-photographed, pictures -- which are great for inspiration (I always find them greatly inspiring in my other Williams-Sonoma cookbooks).

The recipes range the gamut from easy to a bit more technical, but all cooks should be able to pull these meals off. Also, there is something that I found to be particularly wonderful about this cookbook: there are dessert recipes inside! I had almost become used to a world in which 'healthy cooking' did not involve cooking desserts... (Again, the pictures are wonderful, and guaranteed to make you drool, even if the dessert turns out to be inordinately healthy.)

I recommend this cookbook for anyone with a visual eye that is interested in healthy cooking.

Editorial Review:

Cook well, eat well, and feel great. Williams-Sonoma shows you the way with Essentials of Healthful Cooking. This teaching volume takes a broad look at cooking healthfully, focusing not on excluding ingredients from a cook's repertory, but using ingredients creatively for maximum freshness, flavor, and nutrition. The book includes over 130 tempting dishes, with an emphasis on classic recipes that are modified for the healthful kitchen. Full-color photography showcases the finished dishes. Authors Mary Abbott Hess, Dana Jacobi, and Marie Simmons are highly regarded cooking experts with a flair for healthier fare. A nutrient guide and recipe analysis support the emphasis on quality eating.

Editorial Review:

Twenty–five years in the ER could become a resume for despair, but for Dr. Robert D. Lesslie it’s a foundation for inspiring tales of angels who are friends, nurses, doctors, patients, strangers, or those unseen but clearly present “others” in the midst of trial.

“The ER is a difficult and challenging place to be. Yet the same pressures and stresses that make this place so challenging also provide an opportunity to experience some of life’s greatest wonders and mysteries.” Dr. Lesslie illuminates messages of hope while sharing captivating stories about:

  • discovering lessons from the ER frontline
  • watching miracles unfold
  • witnessing the handiwork of angels
  • holding onto faith during tragedy and triumph
  • embracing the healing balm of hope

For anyone who enjoys stories of the miraculous, this gathering is a reminder that hope turns emergencies into opportunities and each trial into a demonstration of God’s grace.

APPALLING book ! Full of insulting stereotypes & little insight! 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I have a long-standing interest in cultural issues in healthcare and so I eagerly bought this book. It's in the 3rd edition--I figured it must be good.

It is appalling! You can turn to almost any page and find a portayal of a person from a minority culture that is presented in such a way that it makes the person sound like an idiot. Not just immigrant and ethnic minority patients--immigrant medical professionals, too.

In addition, she does not modify her gross generalizations by saying, "HIGHLY OBSERVANT Muslims" or "LESS-ACCULTURATED Mexicans" or even "SOME Chinese." No, for Galanti, she generalizes about Muslims, Mexicans and Chinese, with no gradations according to people's country of origin and degrees of orthodoxy (e.g. Muslims), generations in this country, fluency in English, etc.

I am afraid this volume will perpetuate stereotypes. Yes, it may be "fun reading" for people who know nothing about the topic, but they will end up with a view of "how weird those people are!" rather than either any true cultural understanding or a better sense of how to adapt their own practice to meet their patients' needs.

i have never returned a book in my life--this is going to be the first.

Stay away from this one!

Editorial Review:

In the 1990s reported autism cases among American children began spiking, from about 1 in 10,000 in 1987 to a shocking 1 in 166 today. This trend coincided with the addition of several new shots to the nation's already crowded vaccination schedule, grouped together and given soon after birth or in the early months of infancy. Most of these shots contained a little-known preservative called thimerosal, which includes a quantity of the toxin mercury.

Evidence of Harm explores the heated controversy over what many parents, physicians, public officials, and educators have called an "epidemic" of afflicted children. Following several families, David Kirby traces their struggle to understand how and why their once-healthy kids rapidly descended into silence or disturbed behavior, often accompanied by severe physical illness. Alarmed by the levels of mercury in the vaccine schedule, these families sought answers from their doctors, from science, from pharmaceutical companies that manufacture vaccines, and finally from the Center for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration-to no avail. But as they dug deeper, the families also found powerful allies in Congress and in the small community of physicians and researchers who believe that the rise of autism and other disorders is linked to toxic levels of mercury that accumulate in the systems of some children.

An important and troubling book, Evidence of Harm reveals both the public and unsung obstacles faced by desperate families who have been opposed by the combined power of the federal government, health agencies, and pharmaceutical giants. From closed meetings of the FDA, CDC, and drug companies, to the mysterious rider inserted into the 2002 Homeland Security Bill that would bar thimerosal litigation, to open hearings held by Congress, this book shows a medical establishment determined to deny "evidence of harm" that might be connected with thimerosal and mercury in vaccines. In the end, as research is beginning to demonstrate, the questions raised by these families have significant implications for all children, and for those entrusted to oversee our national health.

A couple of good ideas and filler 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The author has a couple of good ideas: management is about building processes not about managing people, and the value of a practice is it's process. The problem is that we get no details about how develop such processes. Instead we get a bunch of meaningless psychobabble about change and motivation and the same two presmises simply repeated over and over again. This is nothing like a practical guide on how to rework a medical practice.

An excellent, detailed overview for both experts and novices 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

This text is an excellent textbook for both infectious disease professionals and for students of infectious disease epidemiology. Nelson and colleagues cover a range of essential topics from a survey of important historical epidemics to study designs for infectious disease investigations. The first part of the text covers ID epidemiology background and methodology, whereas the second focuses on specific diseases as examples of different transmission modalities. TB, HIV and Influenza are among the pathogens discussed in great detail. Chapters are written by experts in their respective fields, making this textbook not only authoritative, but also up-to-date in scope and content. Many of the authors are affiliated with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health or the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. "Infectious Disease Epidemiology" is extremely readable, and serves as an excellent reference tool. I highly recommend it.

Editorial Review:

This comprehensive resource applies the fundamentals of epidemiology to the study of infectious diseases (ID). In the first section, readers will learn about basic epidemiologic methods for the study of ID plus be introduced to newer techniques like geographical information systems, mathematical modeling, and genetic laboratory tools. In the second section, the book covers major infectious diseases to illustrate both the range of techniques and issues vital to epidemiologists, and to highlight those diseases that have a major impact on health around the world. These include diseases of high mortality and morbidity such as malaria, HIV, STDs, diarrhea, and those with unique epidemiology such as parasitic diseases and Lyme disease.

Waiting for a long time 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Lean Hospitals is a book I have been waiting to be written since 2004 when I first began teaching Lean to healthcare professionals. I just wish I had it four years ago. The book is fast read and does a nice job bridging Lean concepts and principles into the healthcare environment through examples and stories. Additionally, the book does not just focus on the tools Lean, but also the management system. This is a prerequisite for me before I will purchase any book to share with my senior leadership team (I just ordered a copy for the entire team).

Editorial Review:

Drawing on his years of working with hospitals, Mark Graban explains why and how lean can be used to improve safety, quality, and efficiency in a healthcare setting. After highlighting the benefits of lean methods for patients, employees, physicians, and the hospital itself, he explains how lean manufacturing staples such as Value Stream Mapping and process observation can help hospital personnel identify and eliminate waste in their own processes, effectively preventing delays for patients, reducing wasted motion for caregivers, and improving the quality of care. Additionally, Graban describes how Standardized Work and error-proofing can prevent common hospital errors and details root cause problem-solving and daily improvement processes that can engage all personnel in systemic improvement. A unique guide for healthcare professionals, this book clearly elaborates the steps they can take to begin the proactive process of lean implementation.
