Editorial Review:

Experts agree that we are entering the Golden Age of Medicine, when our everyday experience of being ill and getting better will be more like science fiction than today’s routine trip to the doctor.

Bill Hanson, director of the surgical intensive care unit at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and an inventor of medical technology, offers true-life and intensely intimate stories about the way biotechnology is changing people's lives.
• An electronic nose that detects infection, such as pneumonia, based on a person’s breath
• Robots with appendages that can feel their way around tissue, which will augment the hands of surgeons in the operating room
• Computer health wizards that will advise and prescribe through your home computer
• Computerized psychotherapists dispensing advice about emotional problems
• Telehealth software that serves as a monitoring nurse for difficult to manage chronic illnesses such as diabetes.
• Wheelchairs operated by reading electrical brainwaves for patients with severe neurological deterioration.

Bill Hanson describes the human genius that arrived at these amazing discoveries, and how innovators are working to take these feats to an even more technologically advanced level. And more importantly, he discusses what the human experience will be and how we can prepare ourselves for the moral and ethical challenges that these awesome changes will bring. This riveting and startling account will make us revise our expectations of our own mortality.

LEADERSHIP

Theory and Practice, Second Edition

By PETER G. NORTHOUSE, Western Michigan University

Expanded and updated, the second edition of this best-selling text, like the first, reviews and analyzes the foremost leadership theories, giving special attention to how each theoretical approach can be applied in real-world organizations. Entirely new to the second edition is a chapter on Leadership Ethics, added by the author to address the growing level of concern in society with the ethical behavior of leaders in both the public and private sectors. For anyone seeking to explore how an understanding of leadership theory can inform and direct the way leadership is practiced, Leadership: Theory and Practice, Second Edition, is a valuable tool. Adopted as a textbook at over 250 colleges and universities, this best-selling volume is equally useful for private-sector leadership development training programs.

Describing and analyzing the nine major theoretical approaches to leadership, each chapter of Leadership: Theory and Practice includes: a discussion of the strengths and criticisms of the specific leadership approach described, which assists the reader in determining the merits of each approach; an application section that discusses the practical aspects of the approach and how it can be used in today’s organizational settings; three case studies, with follow-up questions for illustrating common leadership issues and dilemmas; and a questionnaire-type instrument designed to assist the reader in gaining a better understanding of his or her leadership style.

NEW FEATURES OF THE SECOND EDITION:

- An additional chapter on Leadership Ethics written to address an increased level of concern among both students and practitioners on this timely topic, including descriptions of ethical theories and an analysis of five principles of ethical leadership-respect, service, justice, honesty, and community.

- An entirely new chapter on Women in Leadership, including a new Gender Consciousness Questionnaire that allows readers to assess their own attitudes about gender issues in the workplace

- A complete Instructor’s Manual with chapter overviews, lists of concepts and terms, questions for study and discussion, activities for use in class, writing assignments, and a test bank of true and false and multiple choice questions

- The same user-friendly, chapter-consistent format as the First Edition, with each chapter examining a specific leadership approach, including its strengths and weaknesses, its application, three case studies of each approach, and approach-specific instruments and/or questionnaires

- Comprehensive updates and additions incorporating recent advances in scholarship in the field as well as suggestions from classroom use at the over 250 colleges and universities where the First Edition was adopted.

Great book on physical examination and history taking. Will recommend to other healthcare/medical providers.

Great Buy 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I am a Physician Assistant Student and i have to admit that every semester we are required to buy books and at the end of every semester i sell my books buy. This was the only one i did not sell back. Its great for a person who is beginning the medical field and is great for someone who just wants to brush up on technique. The CD located in the back of the books is really not that helpful because it skips critical parts of the physical exam however its good to see how to do certain things. Most of the books chapters are well organized except for the HEENT chapter bc its all over the place. However i LOVE my Bates and i still use it on clinical rotations.

How to make a difference!! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

If you are looking for a way to make a difference in your organization from a leadership perspective,(or even on a personal level) you must read this book. Rather than focusing on the negatives, it focuses on the positives of creating excellence-for the patient, the staff, the physicians and all who come in contact with the organization. It is well worth the read!!

Practical and Cross Industry Application 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Whether one is in healthcare or a non related industry, this book provides superb solutions to providing excellent customer care. As a certified brand strategist, I greatly appreciate Mr. Studer's articulation that one must, and can, hardwire the processes in order to achieve true and perpetual customer service. And he points it out so very well - if one first focuses on superb employee relations, then one will achieve a high level of customer relations.

It is my observation that too many consultants go into companies, identify the customer service issues, hold one or more rah rah events, and then move on to their next project. More correctly, I believe a consultant's responsibility is to work with organization clients to, as Mr. Studer so clearly addresses, hardwire the processes which then will indeed achieve the relationship with employees, channel partners and customers that will so clearly set them apart from their competitors, thereby creating customers who become advocates.

Editorial Review:

For many who work in health care today, overwhelming business pressures and perceived barriers to change have nearly extinguished the flame of their passion to help others. In this book, Quint Studer sparks a trend toward purpose, worthwhile work, and making a difference in the health care profession. He shares his personal story and teaches the reader how to apply specific prescriptive tools and practices to create and sustain a world-class organisation. "Hardwiring Excellence" is a huge success, changing the way countless physicians and their teams operate.

This system really works 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

First, I'll say that I'm an atheist, and the author's religious beliefs, or her expression of them, do not bother me. This is America and we are all entitled to express what we believe, and we all know we're not under obligation to agree with each other. So to those so offended by what she references(God Breezes, etc.), I don't really get it.

Second, I am a single woman with no children who works full-time and lives at home with my mother. I do virtually all of the cooking and cleaning, and have since I was 12 or 13. Far from being a disorganized clutterbug, I know how to clean a house very nicely, I am an expert at laundry, I never have trouble throwing anything out and I'm a great cook. I am not upset by the fact that she wrote this book for someone living a different lifestyle than myself- I take what I need from the system and leave the rest. Not really why this seems to be such an issue for some of the people who wrote negative reviews. Truth is, most women do live a lifestyle similar to the author(wives, mothers, etc.), which is why she has such a following.

With all of my housekeeping skills, though, I grew up learning absolutely no sense of routine or habits, which is what the author is talking about. You can be great at cleaning a house and still have a house that looks like crap on a day-to-day basis. I never grew up making my bed each morning or washing the dishes each night. Like a lot of kids with single parents, I had very little structure to my life and the chaos was something that followed me into adulthood.

What FlyLady helped me to do was set up a control journal where I knew what had to be done each day and when. Now, I still not do everything in "perfect" order each day, which she will tell you herself is fine(in fact, she hates the word "perfect"). I am a very intelligent person, but trying to keep a house in the midst of working full-time can be very overwhelming. It can be very confusing just to know where to start. Seeing what I need to do when, written out in black and white, just made it much more effortless. Step-by-step, my chores are laid out, and simply not having to put much thought into what to do next makes a task that much quicker and easier. Before you know it, these habits are so routine, they don't seem like an effort at all.

Before Flylady, my house would be clean for about 5 minutes once a week(on Saturday, after I spent 6 hours cleaning...) and a disaster the rest of the time. Now, by doing 30-45 minutes of work a day, my house is always company-ready. I don't panic if the maintenance man or a friend needs to drop by. That, in and of itself, is worth everything to me. I pretty much knew what needed to be done, sure- but I needed a SYSTEM of when to do it. That is what Flylady helps you to do. Even if I miss a day or something, I know exactly what I need to do to get my home back on track, and that eliminates a ton of stress.

I will just end by saying that many of us grew up in chaotic homes where we never established the habits, household and otherwise, that made our lives feel safe, stable and secure. On an emotional level, I think that this book is helpful to those of us who never got to make these "simple" things habit. It has nothing to do with intelligence- it has everything to do with how we are programmed. The cool part is, we can reprogram ourselves, even as adults. If you want to get some order and good habits established in your chaotic life, I don't see how this book could be anything but helpful.

Most Repugnant Book Ever 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is excellent, on my top 10 list for sure, but it is an unflinching look at subject matter which is far past revolting.

Something tells me filoviruses aren't quite finished with the human species.

Fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.

Hot Zone is one of my most favorite books ever. I read this a few years ago, and made my husband read it only recently. He loved it as much as I did. It's such a compelling read and I was fascinated from the first to the last page. You won't regret picking up this book.

Editorial Review:

A highly infectious, deadly virus from the central African rain forest suddenly appears in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. There is no cure. In a few days 90 percent of its victims are dead. A secret military SWAT team of soldiers and scientists is mobilized to stop the outbreak of this exotic "hot" virus. The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of the
appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their "crashes" into the human race. Shocking, frightening, and impossible to ignore, The Hot Zone proves that truth really is scarier than fiction.

Editorial Review:

"I welcome with enthusiasm the third edition of this book for families and friends of patients with dementing illnesses. It has served well in its prior appearances and should accomplish even more with this edition." -- Paul R. McHugh, M.D., in the foreword

Through two editions, this best-selling book has remained the "bible" for families who are giving care to people with Alzheimer disease. The 36-Hour Day has offered comfort and support to millions of people in North America and, in translations and adapted editions, throughout the rest of the world. For this third edition, the authors have retained the structure, scope, and purpose of the original book, while thoroughly updating chapters to reflect the latest medical research and the current delivery of care.

Topics that have been added or extensively revised include: Updated terminology and statistics • New material on the evaluation of persons with dementia • Updated changes in laws on driving • A new section on hospice care • New information on assisted living facilities and financing care • Information on other types of dementia • The latest findings on eating and nutrition • New medical research in areas such as drugs, genetics, and diagnostic tests. The revised appendices include: New bibliographic references • websites • Updated addresses of associations and state offices.

Praise for previous editions:

"The best guide of its kind." -- Chicago Sun Times

"An excellent book for families who are caring for persons with dementia... A book that physicians can confidently recommend to the families of their patients." -- Journal of the American Medical Association

"Excellent guidance and clear information of a kind that the family needs... The authors offer the realistic advice that sometimes it is better to concede the patient's frailties than to try to do something about them, and that a compassionate sense of humor often helps." -- New York Times

"An excellent, practical manual for families and professionals involved in the care of persons with progressive illnesses... The book is specific and thought-provoking, and it will be helpful to anyone even remotely involved with an 'impaired' person... Highly recommended, especially for public and nursing libraries." -- Library Journal

" The 36-Hour Day has served its readers well. The revised edition should be even more useful both to family caregivers and professional health care providers." -- HMO Practice

"The reader who is familiar with the first edition will recognize the strengths that continue in the revised edition -- numerous case examples, practical advice, thoroughness of coverage, and communication of caring and humane attitudes while presenting information that may be sensitive and upsetting to families." -- Clinical Gerontologist

Wannabe practitioner beware 2 out of 5 stars.
22 of 28 people found this review helpful.

I will admit that while I lived in West Africa, I had a copy of Where There Is No Doctor on my shelf, and that I consulted it on a frequent basis. As a public health worker, it was an invaluable resource at the time. However, this was not the only book I had on hand, and I certainly didn't view it as the Medical Bible that so many cavalier explorers think it is. The simple fact is, unless you have adequate training to perform any sort of diagnosis or treatment, YOU SHOULD NOT DO SO, and you will probably do more harm than good. This book DOES NOT make you a medical professional to any degree whatsoever. It is also filled with horrible ideas that "might work" (that is a direct quote). Teaching people to rinse out condoms (as the French Language version suggests) or using bisected lemons as impromptu cervical caps is dangerous and totally irresponsible. There is no way in hell anyone who has simply leafed through this book is ready to deliver a baby. That is ridiculous. Sure, most of the time a mother will pretty much deliver her baby herself, but if something goes wrong, and you don't have the experience, you little tour into obstetrics is likely to kill the mother and/or the child.
There is enough misinformation in the rural areas of the developing world already, and this book has the potential to take lives. Even in the most dire of situations, untrained yahoos should not be tempted into thinking that they can diagnose even the simplest of bacterial infections and prescribe the proper antibiotic.
Another thing that this book does is take cultural health information that has evolved amongst native peoples, and it simplifies it so that other people can "try" it. There is a scarily simple illustration of a technique for circumcision in this book that has the potential to lead to the loss of a little boy's penis. In cultures where circumcision is practiced there is (almost) always a dedicated practitioner who performs such rites, and either has done hundreds (or thousands) of them, or has studied under the previous practitioner as an apprentice. i.e. this person is practiced, and has experience. This person is NEVER some wiseguy who got a copy of Where There is No Doctor from a friend, along with a rusty pair of scissors. Trying to circumcise a boy with the helpful sketch provided by this book would be ludicrous. God forbid some charlatan gets ahold of this book and comes to the great idea that he should be his village's "doctor." Many of the techniques in this book must be performed in an aseptic manner to reduce the chance of infection, but they are not done in such a manner in the book.
That being said, the book can be a powerful tool for public health workers who do not have a strong background in clinical medicine. But it must be used cautiously, with supplemental information. There are innumerable fallacies in this book, and the author has taken little care to edit it. I'm sure the man means well, but really what he's done is reassure people who've watched too much ER that they can be doctors too.
Honestly, the book should be re-edited, and many of the techniques should be removed, as they have the potential to cause more harm than good. If you want to help the developing world, support the local Ministry of Health, and empower them to either place trained nurses in the area, or to sponsor traditional healers and midwives to get the vital bits of training they need, training that can bridge the gaps in their significant knowledge base. Proper health networks are not built by medical tourists and short-stay medical missionaries who want to play doctor. They are constructed from the inside by countries who have people working to distribute resources and fight against corruption. If you want to help, pick up a few bags of cement and build a village health center that can be kept clean, but don't pick up a syringe and act like you know what you're doing.

Editorial Review:

Hesperian's classic manual, Where There Is No Doctor, is perhaps the most widely-used health care manual in the world.

Useful for health workers, clinicians, and others involved in primary health care delivery and health promotion programs, with millions of copies in print in more than 75 languages, the manual provides practical, easily understood information on how to diagnose, treat, and prevent common diseases. Special attention is focused on mutrition, infection and disease prevention, and diagnostic techniques as primary ways to prevent and treat health problems.

This 2007 reprint includes new material on preventing the transmission of blood-borne diseases, how HIV/AIDS is reflected in many health issues, and basic Antiretroviral treatment information, as well as updated information on children and aspirin, stomach ulcers, hepatitis, and malaria treatments.

Anti-inflammatory strategies can slow the chronic and degenerative diseases of aging-even aging itself. Jack Challem shows us how the antioxidant vitamins E and C, modifying lifestyle factors, food and nutritional supplements, and nutraceuticals can be useful in reducing the risks of inflammatory disorders."
